Worst school ever!!! I was a transfer student from Eldorado, went there for two years and upon transferring to Explore Academy they put absolutely none of my credits in that I had previously earned into their records even through it is required to bring a transcript from the previous school to be able to transfer. So I’m just now finding out that I’ve been retaking classes that I already had credits for just because they did not do their job. I would never recommend this school to anyone especially since I’ve had so many issues with them prior to this issue. They gave me missing assignment reports for assignments that weren’t even missing, they wrote me up for low test performance when I had an excused absence and the teacher couldn’t even bother to respond to her emails so I could do a makeup test, they gave me half credit for assignments that deserved full credit (they said the assignment was incomplete), the list just goes on and on. This is the worst high school experience I could have ever imagined. If you’re looking into this school thinking it’ll be a great school for your child I seriously recommend you think twice about it. They have made school harder than it needed to be for me and I think the worst part is the school sides with the teachers over the students. I’ve had so many issues with this school I just had enough. Don’t go to explore Academy they will ruin your schooling experience.

Explore academy is a good school, it took me a while to settle in as everything moves so fast. The school is run kinda like a collage I guess that’s how I would put it. Most students are genuinely caring and the school has a good system of handling bullying, except on the bus which is out of their control I guess.

The educational model at Explore Academy is truly unique. It does not exist at any other middle or high school in the state. Proof of this is a quote from the outgoing N.M. Secretary of Education: Explore Academy is the most innovative school in the entire state...and its not even close. The 80% standard for passing each class is sometimes misunderstood. The principle of SUBJECT MASTERY is fast becoming the guiding principle of the national leaders in educational excellence (i.e. dont let a student move-on to the higher level class, until they have mastered 80% or more of the current class level). In fact, this is the fundamental principle of the Khan Academy...the acknowledged innovator in on-line tutoring.Mr. Baiardo (Explore Academys founder) understands the power of this principle and has made it a fundamental principle of his educational model. When you add-in the very small classes at Explore Academy, students being able to select their own schedules and flavors of each class...as well as a truly dedicated staff of teachers, its easy to see why this charter school has received an A grade from the State Dept. of Education, in each of the past 3 years. Explore is always rated in the top 3 high schools in the state...regardless of who is doing the rating. This is truly one of the great educational models. As a result, the wait-lists continue to grow and demand for this innovative approach as well. So many parents requested this model for their middle-school children that Explore added a middle school. Now, the demand continues to grow and in this school year, Explore is opening a second campus, just off of Osuna. As I was searching for an alternative educational approach for my children, I settled on the charter school approach. Then, I did extensive research on which charter model provided everything I was seeking: Small classes, motivated teachers, extra academic support and tutoring, student responsibility and flexibility, exceptional administrative leadership, and reliance on subject mastery. Explore Academy was the only charter school in the state to fulfill all of these requirements.IN SHORT....IT WORKS!

I went to Explore Academy from 2017-2020(my sophomore-senior year). The school is very enticing and seemed like the perfect place for me. It was, it made school a breeze for me, I had a bad habit of not doing homework and relying on tests to pick up my grades for me, I understood coursework and was too lazy to do the homework, so Explore Academy’s system of relying on one test to pass or fail a credit was heaven on earth for me. I slacked on homework and, in my beginning year, I was quite often put on academic concern during the one month terms, but I always passed my classes despite it. I make it sound great and it was for me, but I saw many of my peers struggle from the style of learning. I think the system can stress out people way too much(the pressure of one final test being the make or break of a credit got to be too much for some) but on the other hand, it was way too easy for me and some of my friends, it instilled bad study habits and even worsened my procrastination habits. I took advantage of the system and it made learning in high school not really a thing for me. I think the biggest thing to note about Explore is that I always felt they handled touchy matters immaturely and/or unprofessionally. There was a time a student posted an offensive meme on their instagram page that included an insensitive topic and the CEO of the school- Justin Baiardo. It was extremely out there and definitely not something that should be on a school campus, which it wasn’t. It was posted to a public platform and not distributed around the school except through means of other students having instagram accounts, we weren’t even allowed to be on our phones anyway. The school found out about it and decided to suspend and punish the creators, as well was anyone who double tapped or commented on the post, I was not included in this group, I didn’t even know about the post until people started getting punished. What I’m trying to show with this example is that they took an out of school matter and brought it into the school which created a huge wave of drama and really put a division between the student body and admin. I’m not to say what they posted was okay, but it was also an exercise of free speech that was made outside of school using only pictures from a public domain. The bottom line is this: Explore Academy is incredibly inviting and is really good for some students, but they will say it isn’t for everyone and they are absolutely correct, it was easy for me, but not good for me, it was hard for some and in turn very good for them. I wouldn’t tell anyone to expect to feel as a part of a family when attending Explore, especially as they become bigger and branch out into different counties and states. In the last year, it felt nothing more than being apart of some commercialized franchise that’s picture perfect from the outside, but infested with countless parasites within. I won’t say not to go here, but I will say that you should not make a quick decision when it comes to attending or not attending Explore Academy.

My daughter has attended Explore Academy for the past 18 months (9th and 10th grades). She has thrived! In the beginning, it was shocking for us both to adjust to the mastery learning process, and the interim grades from quizzes that were Fs were scary in the beginning, but they also were motivating for her to focus on learning. Having flavors to choose from seems to keep her more focused on subjects she doesnt love (science), and have helped her grow to enjoy subjects she used to strongly dislike (history). I think she has learned more science than she would have in a traditional high school science class. She has been able to develop into a leader in clubs, and build strong, challenging relationships which have helped sustain her in this pandemic climate. The school has been responsive to any concerns we have had (very few) and provide a lot of support to the students. They do have high standards for behavior and responsibility!

I cant say that this school is for everyone, but it definitely has been for me. Back when I was in middle school, I was a D student. Today, Im an A and B student, and have managed to hold honor roll for the entirety of my sophomore year. A traditional school puts weight on every last assignment, and your grade is at stake every time you perform poorly. This is what always threw me overboard, since Im a little bit of a slow learner. However, with this school, you have the flexibility to perform poorly. The only grade that is finalized for each class is the exit exam placed at the end of the class, and each class lasts a bit less than a month. With the small classes at this school, it is also possible for teachers to help each student individually in the entire class if it was really needed.Slow learners flourish at this school, as long as they are willing to work for success. Instead of getting caught off-guard by a huge test that bombs your grade, your teacher helps you do better the very next day; your grade is left untarnished. Instead of every last homework assignment needing to be reviewed three times over for the sake of your grade, you can finally accept that you arent perfect and simply go in to ask questions for the teacher to answer.EDIT: This is an old review, before Explore Academy started growing a lot. As far as Ive heard from my old friends, its packed now and classes are a good bit larger. My experience with the school might not be valid anymore, so dont just take my word for it. Still, I am glad I attended Explore when I did.

From middle school maintaining a C average, often receiving failing grades to coming to this high school I have seen an improvement in my learning abilities with only failing a couple courses my freshman year. I would say it can be very frustrating and discouraging for a student when you take a month long course and fail it with a 76% and dont get credit for the entire course taken. As when I said only a few courses failed I failed those courses with most of the time nothing lower than a 70. I understand this school has higher standards but when you obviously didnt fail the course because a 70-79 is a C anywhere else, and having to retake the course the same year or catch up following years to take the course yet again can be tricky. I try not to look at all negatives but to see it as a motivating concept to make yourself better and not settle just for passing but to always aim for As and Bs. The issues at hand with month long classes is I feel sometimes information on top on information is just piled on us and the teachers didnt necessarily plan there course efficiently which resulted in a rushed learning of many topics that they say were going to cover briefly but it is seen on our final and wasnt covered in detail.Throughout this year there has been drama, as this can be seen anywhere you go .I agree with previous comments seen on the reviews that the staff doesnt seem to take bullying, or drama serious and see it as a joke or not serious. There has been multiple times people racked themselves points to the verge of getting kicked out, varying from 9 to even over 10 points who should have been kicked out but were not. From personal experience drama occurred, we spoke to the principal, staff, and with the kids who we had drama with trying to settle the situation through a talk. They didnt take further measure and in result the drama continued with no actual solution made. The only improvement needed to resolve these issues being stated by multiple people, would be to have a better way of using there point system, and how the staff is handling drama and bullying because this is a big issue.

I am currently a senior at this school. I have been going to this school since 2016, as a freshman. I can say that this school has definitely been a roller coaster of ups and downs, from the administration issues of the past to my own issues that I had to work out through my time here. It has, however, been an overall positive experience for me. Almost all of the teachers at this school are absolutely amazing at what they do, which is definitely the main reason why I like this school. While I havent been to any other high school, I can safely say that they are better than the majority of teachers that I had in elementary/middle school. This school was definitely rough around the edges when I first came, and up until just this year, it seemed like nothing was really being done to fix any of the issues with it. This resulted in many things being much more difficult than they needed to be, such as communication between students and staff about important events, administration changes, etc. In fact, if I had written this review last year, I probably wouldve rated the school two or three stars. However, just from the first two weeks of my senior year, I can say that the schools administration issues have most definitely been improved upon, if not removed entirely. Everything at the school is running much smoother than they have in past years, and things that shouldve been done long ago are finally being taken care of.Two major complaints that I saw from various different other reviews were favoritism issues, and the stress levels of the school. First, as far as favoritism goes, I personally have never experienced that at this school. The administration at this school, even in years past, was and still is fair to each and every student. There are some strange cases, I will admit that; however, I feel that those were more due to the disorganization of the school in years past rather than the admin purposefully expelling a student because, for some unknown reason, they just felt like it.Second, as far as the stress levels at this school go, I can definitely agree; however, I dont feel like its an issue. This school is a college prep school, and while the academic structure is admittedly a bit strange in my opinion, and some of the more ambitious classes that teachers create can definitely put lots of pressure on students, that doesnt make the school automatically a bad school. Any parents reading this review who have attended college undoubtedly know that it is a very stressful environment; and, while I cant speak from the perspective of a college student (yet!), I can see the stress that college is putting on my brother, who graduated from this school last year. Now, I will admit that there have been some classes that I have taken in the past, most notably with one specific teacher who I will not name for privacy reasons, that have put unnecessary stress on me for frankly ridiculous reasons. This teacher has repeatedly put content on their exit exams which were barely skimmed or not covered at all in the class, meaning that, on multiple occasions, I have failed classes for a completely unjust and unfair reason. In other words, even after studying for this teachers exit exams, you still have a large chance of failing.Overall, however, I definitely recommend this school, now more than ever before. Like I said earlier, almost every teacher at this school is amazing at what they do, and you will undoubtedly get a great education from them. To add on to that, since this school is a college prep school, and since this year has been so much more organized than past years, it does a great job of getting students acclimated to the stress that they should expect at college, while providing an amazing support system and staff. And, again, as stated above, while there is one teacher that does seem to grade very unfairly, I still feel like all of the other aspects of the school outweigh that one negative. So, if you do decide to come here, you most definitely wont regret it.I hope you found this review helpful!

While there are some teachers at the school who are caring, organized, and consistent, the school itself has a multitude of problems. One of the first things I noticed when I got to the school was the clear teacher and staff favoritism among the students, you could see two students getting into trouble for the exact same offense, yet one would somehow get off with only a warning, and the other would be paying the full consequences? Doesnt seem like thats healthy for a school environment where all students are supposedly equal. The next thing I noticed was the complete lack of consistency with their disciplinary actions, Explore runs off of a point system, and you earn points based on whatever offenses you make against the rules, 10 points gets you expelled. At least thats how it is supposed to be, there are many things that constitute points that are perfectly reasonable, but what happens when a student repeatedly fails to complete their homework on time, yet never seems to accumulate any points for it, and what happens when a student is written up for perhaps having their jacket unzipped too low for their liking, it just doesnt seem fair no? As I said above, there is a clear favoritism among the students at explore, and the students that dont meet the status quo set by the administration are slowly but surely weeded out and targeted for expulsion regardless of grades and work ethic. Over the past 3 months, the majority of my friends at Explore have either been expelled, transferred, or it has been suggested to them that they simply leave the school. As of this review I have accumulated 9 academic points and am currently at risk of being expelled in a point during the year where I currently have no other options other than my GED which would not be my first choice. If you are planning on going to Explore Academy with the idea of receiving a compassionate, consistent, and individualized education, this is not the school for you.

If you do your research youll see that the school earned an A rating with the State of NM, is one of the TOP 10 high schools in NM, and PARCC results show the school beat APS, State *and* National averages. The school is very strict and behavioral problems, bad influences or those that just want to coast through high school tend to be pruned out very quickly because the classes are designed for students who have the desire to engage and get the most out of their education. This is a good thing from my perspective because it keeps the student body focused on learning.

This school is not as good as it is made out to be the system here is honestly messed up I really hate how the school is SAID to be innovative the school isnt innovative other than having to bring a laptop to school. first of all every subject (year long class) is broken up into classes for every single unit you only pass a class if you have an 80 or higher so if you get a C+ in one unit of a class you dont pass and you have to continue to retake it until you do get an 80.. which is okay except for someone who wants to graduate on time and cant get a B or higher on every unit of every subject . The worst part is the averaging out of things, in public school you can do all your homework and projects and assignments and pass with a B even if you get a C on a test because they average out things and you also have multiple opportunities to make it up or do extra credit etc. in this school the ONLY thing that matters is the exit exam thats it. Just one test and if you felt stressed or anxious on that ONE test and get under an 80 ITS over you have to retake the whole unit again and for someone who has test anxiety this is a big deal. Even if your teen has straight As in public school, chances are he or she will start failing here because of this system and how much more complicated they make each unit seem. I tried to like this school but i just cant see myself graduating in a school system like this. I see all these good reviews but if most of the kids at this school said what they really thought of this school itd have 2 stars at most. I came here with the impression that the students loved the school but every time I ask a student why they are there its because they cant transfer or their credits wouldnt be able to transfer over to another school without having to retake a semester or more. some of the reactions Ive gotten from kids is this school is a prison leave while you credits are still legible to transfer and the most common lol Im transferring out of here next semester. SOME of the teachers are such nice people and are so so caring which made me try hard to like the school but the schools system is a problem and it just isnt right for most kids. I hope one day this school changes how their system works and they prosper and future kids have a better experience than I did.

I want everyone that stumbles upon this review to know that I love Explore Academy with a passion, Im honestly heartbroken with my situation right now. I want my friends and former teachers to know that I worked extremely hard.●This goes out to all of the possible future students of EA: I have been a student at Explore for two years. My intention was to stay there for four years solid. I invested so much into it- student council, soccer, clubs, etc. I got expelled at the end of the year for recieving my 10th point. I am aware that EA has removed points from certain students, letting them stay. As a student who tried their best at Explore, I want anyone who is considering this school to know that there is a bias within the system.Education and curriculum: Personally, I have never seen a better academic system than EA. 100% of the final grades are based on an EOC exam, math is integrated, and the system prepares you for college. However, learning is very fast paced and advanced. You are required to get an 80% on the final, otherwise you fail and have to retake the course. I found it very stress inducing, especially since there wasnt a counselor until this previous year.Community: Explore Academy has a very unique community. Students are required to join a club they associate themselves with every Friday, and have an opportunity to join 8 different clubs a year. Compared to aps, there isnt as many bullying issues, but it is a high school (there are cliques, etc). Teachers are biased, and I have had to complain about certain teachers not doing their jobs.Disciplinary system: This should seem simple, a ten point system. If a student accumulates 10 points (within a year) the end result is expulsion. You can receive points for behavior, missing assignments, etc. My personal experience leaves me with a conclusion that this system has a very large grey area, and it is everything that is wrong with the place.● To anyone considering Explore Academy: As sophomore representative of the 2018-2019 school year, you will be put under a lot of stress. You will be expected to put your mental health last. You will possibly be expelled for wearing ripped jeans, and missing homework assignments. You might even be faced with a eoc exam that your teacher never prepared you for. You will be expected to take 40 finals a year, and be expected to get an 80% or higher. They took off the doors of the bathrooms because there are so many drugs in that place, so be ready to pee in an uncomfortable space, or hold it. If you attend EA, you need to be commited. I am going to be a Junior, and I feel like my education is screwed because literally nobody else learns the way that Explore does.Best of luck,G

Explore Academy has the most rediculous dicsipline protocol I have ever seen in my career as a student. First of all, they have a ten point system, which means that after receiving your tenth point, you get expelled. Second, it is way too easy to get a point. Every time youre late on a homework assignment, you get a point. Another way to rack up points is by simply saying something that may have offended another student. Explore Academy teaches its students that authority can do no wrong and that questioning it deserves punishment. They claim that students have a voice, but that is simply untrue.

We felt like our childs education was not important and our concerns were not addressed. Some of the teachers are great, while others are not so great. When issues came up we were never contacted promptly or at all for that matter. One teacher called our child a basic b*tch and when this was brought to the principals attention, she stated that other parents had also complained about this teacher saying things to other students as well. Another teacher seemed to have a personal problem with my child but I was never contacted with any concerns from the teacher herself. I am very disappointed with how we were treated at this school. I feel like they were purposely trying to make my child fail, even though she has always maintained good grades there.

Going to Explore Academy is one the best decisions I have ever made. I used to go to public school and I never felt accomplished, or that I was even learning anything. I had teachers at public school who would tell us their life story instead of teaching us the materials we needed for exams, I was ignored in any aspect of educational or emotional help because the counselor was always on lunch and away from campus. But now that I am attending Explore Academy everything has changed. I have never felt more cared about or enolved in a school, I feel like I am accomplishing many things that I have always wished to. This school is very focused on teaching the correct materials to every student, making sure they not only remember the steps but understand them as well. I have learned more in every class, whether its english, spanish, history, or any other subject, in 2 weeks than a whole semester in public school. I can talk to every teacher (and administration staff!) about my concerns and actually be listened to and not ignored or judged. Every teacher knows every student, everyone is heard here. Many have said that this school is ridiculous or stupid, but in reality this school has high standards for every student because they know what we can achieve if we set our minds to it. We want everyone to get an 80% or above on their exams because we know every student can get that grade! Students are always allowed and able to ask for and recieve help from every teacher, as long as you ask for help, you will get it. We never leave anyone behind. This is a serious school that understands the importance of an education, we push everyone to do their very best, then allow them to grow and rise above every expectation they had for themselves. But we also have a compassionate side as well, we understand that sometimes we all need a helping hand in order to stand strong and face the future. Ive never seen a better school community than this, everyone has so much confidence and compassion towards one another to the point where it really does feel like a supportive family.I can say, without a doubt, that Explore Academy has changed me for the better. I am more prepared and excited for my future.

The school is not the same as the way they try to package itThere is extreme favoritism shown in the school as a new student i was once written up for checking the time while one of the favored students was on social media and video games and wasnt even looked atWhile the school offers many learning opportunities the constant switching off and on with the classes can put extreme pressure on students
