What Does It Mean to Earn a Black Belt at USTA?When I started 4 years ago, getting a black belt seemed like an almost impossible task. I saw the higher belt students and the skills that they had, and wondered if I could live up to that. But I found that with hard work and motivation, I was gradually able to learn most of those skills myself. I got frustrated at points, but I was able to go farther than I ever thought I could. But of course, I had patient and helpful instructors that guided me along the way. I’m especially grateful for my parents, who encouraged me and worked with me at home. With their help, I was able to push myself harder than I ever expected. When you achieve something great like a black belt, it feels awesome that you finally got it. When you think about this moment, when you’re being filled up with happiness and excitement, it gives you the motivation to keep moving toward that moment. That sense of happiness and excitement is what I feel now, with my graduation two weeks away. The anticipation is exhilarating. With a big goal like a black belt, it makes you think four years of taekwondo is worth it, right? Four years of training to get to live this one moment that we’ve all been waiting for! You can’t push down your excitement when something like that finally comes along. THAT is what makes it all worth it.The main lesson I’ve learned from this experience is that if you put your mind to it, you’ll find that not only will you have achieved something, you will have learned something useful. You also will have gained confidence for your next task. That is why I will always remember my experience at U.S. Taekwondo Academy.- Olivia S.

I love USTA this place is very clean, all the instructors are firm but nice. If a student is struggling, they will give that student individual attention to help them and not embarrass them. My son can sometimes loose focus but they get him right back on track. The Grand Master is very friendly, he makes you feel like family, he remembers people by name which makes you feel like more than a number. It makes you feel like they really care about you and your kid, my son loves coming here, hes anxious and excited to get his next belt. Hes working very hard at home and in class, the instructors make it clear you have to be an all around disciplined and good person in class and at home to move up.

A black belt is not just another belt, it is a goal, an example of hard work, and an accomplishment. Becoming a black belt in the USTA has been my goal for the past 4 years, and I’m almost there. I’ve been working harder to get my black belt since I’m graduating to black belt soon, which is a very crucial part of anyones career in Taekwondo. And if I or anyone else who wants to get to black belt must work hard through all the belts and practice their skills. Those who give up won’t have their achievement in life that they got their black belt in Taekwondo.Martial arts boost your confidence which I think is a good thing because I am not as afraid to talk to people as I used to be. A way to boost your confidence in Taekwondo is yelling, and on top of that, you are taking multiple classes which eventually builds up making your confidence stronger. Another way (and a requirement to test and graduate to black belt) is to teach classes, which kind of forces you to yell so everybody could hear you and teaching someone else boosts your confidence (it did for me at least). So you need more confidence in yourself, or you won’t be able to do anything because you are too shy.In conclusion of this paragraph, being a black belt means you need to be confident in yourself. A black belt is like a touchdown, you progress to the first down (a new belt), and eventually reach the touchdown (the black belt). When you get your black belt you’re not necessarily done with Taekwondo, you still need to refine your skills, do your best to get the other degrees of the black belt. Similarly, to what I said earlier, the black belt is a goal to reach, if you don’t work hard enough, you won’t reach your goal.

Earning a Black Belt is not just memorizing your forms and self-defense. It is way more than that. 3 years ago, I was hesitant to join Taekwondo at the beginning because I thought it was mainly for kids and I was not sure if I can endure it as an adult. I joined because of my kids at first but eventually I realized that it is very helpful for my well-being as a mom, a wife and a full time nurse leader. I always say “Taekwondo keeps me fit and helps me keep going”. I always look forward coming to class and feel good after our training.I consider belt testing, graduation and advancing to the next level an achievement. This entails hard work and determination. I never imagined myself going this far considering my busy work schedule. I am very thankful to the USTA family especially to Master Atoun’s leadership for being understanding and flexible with my schedule. USTA has been our family for more than 3 years now and we are forever grateful to be a part of them. All the concepts of the belts in Taekwondo summarizes what it means to gain a Black Belt. All students must remember these and keep it in their hearts. Discipline, dedication, commitment, leadership, motivation and humility are some of the basic fundamentals for Taekwondo. This is a good training ground for our future leaders and we sure have so many potentials at USTA. As a leader myself, it is very humbling to be a part of this great team. This has been a long journey for me and I am looking forward for more years and more learnings to come. It is truly “A Black Belt is a White Belt that never quits”. It is an honor and privilege for me to earn a Black Belt and will forever treasure this.

My daughter has been a student at USTA Allen for several years and is currently working toward her graduation to black belt. I cannot say enough good things about USTA Allen. My daughter has acquired both excellent skills and self confidence as she has progressed through the program. The program also focuses on character building, and she has benefitted from that aspect also. I highly recommend USTA Allen. My daughter will earn her black belt this month. In her own words, here is what is means to her to become a black belt at USTA:Earning my black belt is an accomplishment that I am so honored to achieve. I started tae kwon do in August of 2017. So my journey to my black belt started a little over three years ago when I was nine years old. During my journey I learned to focus, be punctual, use my best effort, and to be consistent. I also learned how to set the right goals for myself. I learned to be committed to my goals and have courage in everything I do. I learned to use self-control and to be patient with myself and others around me. I became more enthusiastic and determined to accomplish my goals. I followed through with everything I started and I learned to balance my schedule out so I don’t become too stressed. I learned to be flexible with other people and to be perseverant. I also started contributing to more things at places like my home and at my school. The mental and physical improvement since the beginning of tae kwon do to today is amazing. But with a black belt comes new responsibilities too. Some of those responsibilities consist of self-discipline, determination, and self-confidence. I still have many things to improve on like confidence and authority but I have also improved on many things since I was a white belt. Some things I have improved on since then are self-discipline, enthusiasm, and respect. Getting a black belt means I have accomplished my goal but does not mean I must stop there. I can move on and try to reach my next goal no matter how difficult it may be. Getting a black belt does not mean I am done with martial arts. It just means I am starting another journey to my second degree then to my third degree and so forth. I am so proud that I was given the opportunity to earn a black belt and will keep creating new goals for myself to accomplish.-Elly Hyde

I have been attending the United States Taekwondo Academy for the past eight years. When I first started, I was about seven years old and kind of crazy. The Academy has improved my maturity, focus, and has helped me develop a work ethic and more independence. I became an instructor about a year ago and with that change, I was forced to become more open-minded and I have learned how to work extremely well with fellow Instructors and students alike. Becoming an Instructor has allowed me to experience many different situations and it has taught me how to become a more caring and understanding person. I am currently testing to Third Degree Black Belt and I have learned that the reason testing between Black Belts is such a long time is because you need to develop patience and determination to continue. Each belt since White Belt has a concept. Each of those Concepts teaches you the importance of that belt. For example, the Concept of Blue Belt is Balance. This Concept teaches you to learn the importance of having a balance of your lifestyle and work. Or, the importance of eating healthy and working to get healthy. Another example is Red Belt’s Concept of Flexibility. This Concept is all about working to adapt and overcome any challenges in your way. With each belt, you have to attend Testing and Graduation which evaluate your skills and show off all of your hard work between belts. Doing these events develop your confidence because you perform in front of your peers and Instructors. I used to be very shy around people but in these past eight years, I have become more comfortable around people and not nearly as shy as I used to be.Whenever a student receives their White Belt, everyone says “A White Belt is a Black Belt that never quits.” and this has stuck with me ever since. This is true because it represents what it means to be a Black Belt.Overall, starting Taekwondo was the best decision that I ever could have made. Not only have I grown as a person and became the best version of myself that I could possibly be. Across the walls of the Academy, there is this quote that states, “Winners never Quit and Quitters never win.” -Vince Lombardi; I have looked at this for the past eight years and It has reminded me to never give up for the goals that I strive for; to never stop growing as a person and to never give up on goals that I set for myself.-JP 3rd Degree Black Belt

Earning a black belt in taekwondo has been a quiet wish of mine for many years, but it wasnt until my late 30s that I felt ready to embark on this journey. Given my line of work (professional musician), I am no stranger to hard work, dedication, and perseverance; Ive been playing my instrument for 30 years and plan to continue for at least another 30! However, I felt that taekwondo could help me on my personal journey to improve my focus and confidence, as well as improving my physical conditioning. To that end, I was not looking for a school where I would be gifted with belt promotions or a school that would simply take my money and let me “buy” a black belt if I hung around long enough. I wanted to rightfully earn it, and I wanted to find instructors that would both push me to become the best version of myself that I could be, while also understanding my limits. The moment I met Grandmaster Atuon, I knew I had found the right mentor for me. He is a warm and understanding instructor, but also has high standards and pushes his students to high achievement through encouragement and example. At the conclusion of my second class, I had an interview with Grandmaster Atuon and I wont soon forget the potential he saw in me – he told me that he could see me going all the way to black belt and I laughed it off at first. Ive been clumsy most of my life! Ive never stuck with a workout program of any sort for longer than a few months! But he was adamant that there was nothing holding me back except myself, and that struck a chord in me. Ive come to realize that I am not nearly as limited as I thought I was when I was younger. I have the ability to do anything I set my mind to, and these four years Ive spent at USTA have been invaluable in proving this to myself. I cannot thank all of the USTA instructors enough for their encouragement, their patience, and their unwavering belief that they show in not just me, but all of their students, in every single class.I originally thought that my taekwondo journey would likely end when I earned my 1st degree black belt, but have grown to love this martial art and my USTA family so much that I cant imagine stopping now. This school has truly changed my life for the better, and I am so glad that I took that leap of faith by walking through its doors for my first class back in January 2016.Dr. Margaret Fischer

My journey to a black belt was a long one. I thought it would take me 3 years, when it really took me 5 years; but I am glad it took me 5 years instead of 3 because I learned a lot more and perfected everything. I learned a lot in those 5 years not just physically but mentally. I did learn things physically like the forms, self-defense, and arnis, but going to tae kwon doe changed what I did in certain situations: I am way more patient now since I was a green belt.I have reviewed the concepts of each belt and how they apply to me. White belt, focus and punctuality: I had never really needed to focus in life because everything was given to me. When I started 6th grade I really needed to focus; then one day I was at tae kwon doe and my mom told me to focus on my school work - I looked up and saw focus and punctuality on the wall and I started to focus. I got out of the school year passing all my classes. Also, before I joined tae kwon doe my mom and I were always late to things if it was baseball games or whatever. But when I joined tae kwon doe, if you were more than 10 minutes late then my mom wouldn’t want me to go because it would set a bad example for the younger students; that meant that I missed a lot of classes. But when I joined SWAT then everything changed I was almost never late to class because I was a teacher I couldn’t be late. High White Belt: Effort and Consistency, I used to be lazy and joke around in class, but in the last month or two I have been giving 110% and its paying off. Consistency is when someone constantly does something until you hit perfection. Master Atoun makes me do my form and self-defense constantly until I hit perfection. Yellow Belt, goal setting and commitment: since yellow belt I’ve been setting goals for school: finish every school passing all classes, tae kwon doe: perfect every form, and physical strength: be able to do 50 more push-ups every year. Commitment is putting 110% into whatever you are doing; I’ve been putting in commitment the last month or two, more than I ever have before. High Yellow Belt, courage and self-control: courage is not being afraid of anything or the consequences of whatever you’re doing. Self-Control is controlling your actions no matter what the situation, I use self-control when I am angry in school because of the other kids making fun of me. Green Belt, patience: I am patient with my sister and my friends. High Green Belt, enthusiasm, is when you are excited about everything you do no matter the situation, I am enthusiastic about things even when I’m angry. Blue Belt, determination and follow through: determination is when you have something that makes you follow through with whatever you are doing. Follow through is when you complete one of your hard goals. High Blue belt, balance: to keep everything in your life equal so you stay balanced. Red Belt, flexibility: to stretch yourself to the very limit with everything in your life then come back stronger than ever. High Red Belt, perseverance: when you achieve a goal in spite of discouragement. Deputy Black Belt, contribution: when you do something nice and expect nothing in return.Thank you for pushing me to the very limit and then some. These lessons will stay with me throughout my life.

My Journey to Black BeltI started Tae Kwon Do when I was three. My older brother started before I did at the age of five. I would stand in the back and copy everything I saw my brother doing in class. Since I already knew the form before I started, Grand Master Atoun said I was ready to start. My mom started me in Tae Kwon Do because of my energy and to help me with my focus. Since I started so young, it took me awhile to get better at being focused and channel my energy into my Tae Kwon Do. I am now nine years old and about to be a Black Belt.I started in the Little Ninja program and completed the entire program. I did have my moments when I was a little ninja where I wanted to stop for a while or even quit. However, my mom and dad have always taught my brother and I from a very young age, that when we make a commitment, you follow it though to completion. That was really hard to understand as a child, but I am thankful for that lesson because I would not be where I am now.At one point, my brother was asked to join the Leadership Team (SWAT). I knew right then that I wanted to work even harder to be just like my brother and be invited to the SWAT team. Just before I turned eight, I received my invitation to join SWAT. I have now officially been on SWAT for just over a year.Being asked to join SWAT was one of my goals and a dream come true for me. It was such an honor to be asked to be on the leadership team. SWAT has been very good for me. I tend to be follower and this has pushed me out of my comfort zone. I am very social until you put me in front of a group of people to do anything on my own. In SWAT, I have to lead the class warm-ups and sometimes on my own. It has forced me to overcome my fear of performing/speaking in front of people. My mom always told me I was born to be a leader and now someone else saw that in me as well. This helped my confidence in my own abilities grow even more.Tae Kwon Do, Grand Master Atoun, the instructors and my amazing family have changed my life in so many ways. My life is better thanks to Tae Kwon Do and my amazing family. I am truly forever grateful and thankful for everyone God has put in my life to help me grow and be the best me I can be.

Journey to Black Belt:My journey to a black belt was a long one, but it was worth it. I am proud of the skills I have learned and the effort I put in to reach my goal. However, it was not only my hard work that brought me here. My parents who drove me everyday and waited for me to finish class, as well as motivating me the whole time, and paying for me to learn a martial art, my brother who did it all with me, and Grand Master Atoun for pushing me to be better and work harder. Thank you for helping me achieve this goal.Looking back on myself before I had started Teakwondo, I realize that the martial art itself is not the only thing I learned. There are many changes in the way I act now compared to before. The dedication needed to persist and to keep working even when you are tired are are some of the many things I learned from my experience in taekwondo. I see these changes in my work at school and home. While it may seem difficult at the time, working hard pays off, and it definitely has for me.When I first started Taekwondo I did it just because my mom and brother had joined too. I didn’t not like it, but I also didn’t love it or understand the value as much as I do today. I wanted my black belt just so I could show my friends and they would think it was super cool. Now I understand what a black belt really means, it is a symbol of hard work, dedication, and skill, which I am very excited to receive. In conclusion, earning a black belt in taekwondo is something I will be proud of my entire life. Joining taekwondo is something that has paid off tremendously and I hope to continue and remember it. The experiences I’ve had, and the skills I have learned in the time it took me to get here will stay with me forever.- Jahnvi Raj

My journey to black belt was a really great experience for me, because I gained strength, confidence, responsibility, and much more. When I got my white belt I was so happy, and the minute I got home from my second class I started calculating how long it would take for me to get my black belt. Then I went through the high white, yellow, high yellow, and green belts, all in a year. Then came the point where I never really felt like going to TKD, this was around high green and blue belt. But then in high blue belt I loved to come because I loved playing tag at the end of class and that motivated me. I know it is kind of a weird thing to be motivated by tag, but it was working for me, and all I needed was motivation. Another Then came red belt, when my sister, Laiba, and I were in red belt we were offered to join the SWAT. Basically SWAT gives you the privilege to teach forms and self defense to belt ranks lower than yours. That is when I loved to come to TKD and it taught me to be more responsible. High red belt was kind of the same amount of work as red belt. But then came deputy black belt black. This took me about 11 months. Deputy black belt was the hardest belt because we went running every class and it was so tiring. B days are way more tiring than A days because you have to wear the sparring gear and spar. My journey to black belt was a very exciting journey. I am currently 12 years old and I am proud to get my black belt at a young age. Hopefully I will continue and this is just the beginning of my journey.

When I first joined Taekwondo, my ultimate goal was to just get my first degree black belt and that’s it. But throughout my 3 ½ years at the academy, I’ve learned that it is much more than that and it has impacted me in more ways than I thought it would. Taekwondo isn’t only to help you stay healthy physically but also mentally. It teaches you essential life skills along with martial arts.I am currently testing to 2nd degree black belt and after getting my first degree in May of 2018, I realized that my journey hasn’t ended and there is still a lot left to learn. Now this doesn’t necessarily mean I need to learn more martial arts techniques, but perhaps more qualities that can help me in the future. So when I got promoted to an Assistant Instructor a few months ago, I knew it was going to help me get better and learn more skills. But even before I got promoted, just being part of the SWAT leadership team for the past 2 years affected me greatly. I have gained so many positive qualities that I didn’t have before. Having a lot of patience while interacting with different kinds of people is something I have developed. This is very important because you need this quality to have a healthy relationship with your peers, family members, and even co-workers. Not only has Taekwondo taught me patience, but also confidence and strength. When I compare my current 15-year-old self to my 10-year-old self, when I first joined, I can really see a huge improvement. I know that I should express my opinions now without hesitating about what others might think and I am much more determined to work hard to achieve my goals.Another way Taekwondo has changed my life for the better is by the concepts that go along with each color belt. These concepts were really powerful and had a lot of impact on me, especially since we were asked what they meant during testing and graduation. An example would be “Focus and Punctuality”, which were the concepts of white belt. They helped me understand the importance of paying attention during class and being on time. Just like this, all the other concepts have shaped me into the person I am today. I am also very thankful to Grand Master Atuon and all the other instructors are the academy. They have always been friendly and eager to help with anything I may have been struggling with. I am currently testing to my 2nd degree black belt In conclusion, all of my memories and experiences of U.S. Taekwondo Academy have been great! I can confidently say that it has been one of the best decisions of my life to join this academy.

Journey to my 3rd degree black belt testing. I have been attending United States Taekwondo Academy for over eight years, USTA has slowly become everything to me, first I started putting enthusiasm in it, then I had done everything with passion and finally it was an undeniable hobby of mine.I have been an instructor for quite some time, and before that I was an assistant instructor, in just a little more time I will hopefully be promoted to certified instructor, but to me it’s not about the title when I teach classes, when I teach classes I think about my students and I try to show them everything I know with over 100%. It’s a wonderful experience teaching and watching your students slowly be able to do all their moves perfectly, watching someone grow, from when they did not know how to throw a roundhouse kick to them throwing a tornado-roundhouse is an amazing feeling and it makes you feel like you have achieved something so great, the power of knowledge and being able to share it.Taekwondo is not just a sport for the body to become stronger and more developed, taekwondo is a way of life, and not just something you do in your “free time”. Taekwondo to me is something that my schedule revolves around, it is something that always stays as my life revolves around it.Taekwondo is not something you can do and just forget about it, taekwondo and the things you learn from the dojo are things that stick with you for life. Nor is taekwondo a one night job, it is something that you can never reach the end of, because no matter how old you are, or what condition you are in taekwondo is something that you can only benefit from and by putting as much effort as you want. It is up to you to put over 100% in each class and in each kick and punch, not anyone else.Goal setting & Commitment, that is the concept of yellow belt, which means from and early stage we are told, that to reach whatever it is we want or need we must set the goal and we must be consistent as well as patient.-YA 3rd Degree Black Belt Testing

What Does It Mean To Earn A Black Belt At USTAWhen I first started TaeKwonDo, I was eight years old and had no idea what I was doing. I would show up, take class, and leave. Thats how it was. But when I got my Red Belt it suddenly started to get more intense. Instead of showing up for one class I was supposed to show up for two and then three. Then I started coming three times a week and taking the lower belt classes. This was all to get me ready for my black belt. I did this for a half a year until I got my Deputy Black Belt. Then it was kicked up a notch, I started going on runs around the pond with the other Deputy Black Belts. We also started teaching the lower belt classes and leading the warmups. Usually, the instructors did the warmups. It was like we were black belts already. What I did not see coming is that this would go on for over a year. Over that year I got busier, my teachers started giving us more homework and baseball got more competitive and we had more games and practices. On top of that my siblings schedules got busier which meant I had to go to more games and events. It seemed like I had no free time, and I thought if I have no free time, how am I supposed to get a Black Belt? By now I felt like I had no time for TaeKwonDo and wanted to quit TaeKwonDo to free up my schedule, but I decided not to. I realized even if I had little time to get it, a black belt would have a positive effect on my life and help me be a vigorous person. If I had quit and given up on TaeKwonDo, I would not be the same person I am today. I would still be eight year old Jackson. I would also not feel a sense of accomplishment that I feel. That is why I am grateful to get my black belt.

Taekwondo has not only taught me how to be strong physically but mentally and morally. At first, I thought my journey to getting my first-degree black belt would not be easy, but all the instructors at the academy made it not only easier but more fun. As I kept moving up higher through the belts and learning all the forms, I thought it would become a routine I would soon get bored of. But USTA proved my thought to be wrong, Ive always looked forward to the days I come to Taekwondo. When I received my red-belt, I was invited to the SWAT team. The SWAT program is very important in becoming a successful leader. After thinking about it for a while, I finally accepted the invitation. It was a very big change for me in the best way possible. As part of the SWAT team, Ive developed many important qualities and characteristics such as patience, responsibility, and leadership. Now, two and a half years after starting Taekwondo, it has finally come time to receive my first-degree black belt. I believe that it will not be the end of my ultimate journey, but the beginning of another one. A black belt represents strength, courage, integrity, loyalty, and self-control. A black belt has the Yes I Can Attitude. They believe that they can overcome any obstacle that life puts in their way, either it is in Taekwondo or in our daily lives. These qualities that USTA has taught me, will stay with me forever. I am very thankful to all the instructors and my parents that have made my journey to first-degree black belt a success.

My parents wanted me to learn taekwondo so that I could protect myself when they are not with me. When I was three years old, I went to a different taekwondo and had lots of fun. When I turned 6, I came to USTA so that I could defend myself and learn other things besides taekwondo. Over the last three years, I made new friends and gained more confidence. I learned the value of time and setting goals. USTA gives me something to look forward to, especially after I get a new belt. I learned that practicing is important and that commitment is a part of reaching my goals. Ever since I was six years old, it has always been my goal to one day wear a blackbelt with my name on it. Even though I don’t feel well sometimes or am not 100%, my family always pushed me to keep going by reminding me of my goal. USTA has taught me important lessons that I can use for the rest of my life. USTA has given me a way to defend myself and others and I now feel safe when I go places without my family. From little ninja to deputy black belt, the goal of succeeding has always been clear to me. My family has always been supporting and cheering me on since day one and I am grateful and happy to make my family proud. My family and the USTA staff has seen me grow and turn into a smarter, more focused, and a better person. I will always remember the memories that I had at USTA together with my new friends that I have grown with. When I hold my blackbelt, all of the hard work will have paid off and my dream of getting a blackbelt will finally come true. From,Aarondale BloodworthAllen, Texas

It’s been a long journey for me at United States Taekwondo Academy. When I first joined Taekwondo in 2012, I was only 8 years old. At that point in my life, I really didn’t care for anything, all I wanted to do was just to run away from everything. Unfortunately, Taekwondo was one of them. Compared to the usual 6 months, I received my Yellow Belt in one year. I didn’t feel happy being at taekwondo despite Master Atoun encouraging me to keep on going. I ended up leaving. A couple years later, in January 2015 my mother told me to join Taekwondo again. At first, I was very resentful, but I gave it a chance. I returned to Taekwondo in January 2015, and I was so content to see Master Atoun and all the instructors again!Since January 2015, my journey to Black Belt has been going strong. When I first started out, A Black Belt only meant a ‘cool’ belt, or a Belt to show off to everyone. As time passed by, I realized that a Black Belt means so much more. After October 2016, when I received my High Green Belt, I started to take taekwondo very seriously. I realized the importance of the forms, sparring, arnis, self-defence,etc. Fast forward to October 2017, when I received my Deputy Black Belt. I really stepped up my game after receiving my Deputy Black Belt. I started showing up 3 to 4 times a week (I should’ve been doing that before), and I started to really feel Taekwondo mentally. I apprehended that Taekwondo teaches you self-discipline, respect, patience and pride in anything/everything you do. The concept of Deputy Black is ‘contribution’. From being at Taekwondo, I have grasped that contribution means to give your all in anything/everything you do.My journey has been ascending since then! Although I have had my ups and downs in Taekwondo, Master Atoun has taught me to ‘never give up’. At times when I feel like giving up or I lose hope, I often tell myself, ‘You learn more from losing than winning. You learn how to keep going.’ I’m very thankful to Master Atoun and all the instructors at United States Taekwondo Academy for being with me in this remarkable journey to getting my First Degree Black Belt. Without their support, I could’ve never done it. I’m also very indebted towards my parents who also never let me give up. After about 3.5 years, I will be receiving my First Degree Black Belt. I will be embarking on a new and incredible journey from receiving my First Degree Black Belt!-Tariq Ahmed

We cannot say enough positive things about US Taekwondo Academy in Allen. Grand Master Atoun and the entire team of instructors are talented, professional, kind, and skilled at what they do. They not only teach, but inspire students to be their very best. US TKD Academy models (by example) the principles they teach: self-respect, punctuality, discipline, compassion, and gratitude. Our children have developed into young men of character, focus, teamwork, and determination. We visited other academies in the area and chose US TKD Academy because of Master Atouns personalized connection with our family, focus on martial arts as a part of character-development to enhance lifelong skills, and love of teaching. He really cares about each one of the students and families (and knows them by name). We are so thankful for all they do!

Achieving my first degree black belt in taekwondo is something I am very proud of, something I have spent many years working on, and something I can model for my daughter. We started our journey as a family 6 years ago, but my husband couldn’t keep up with classes with his work travel and dropped it at the high green belt level. I was determined that my daughter and I would make it to black belt level. It is great for everyone to learn to defend themselves, but particularly important for women and girls. It has taken a long time for us as we are a very busy family, and I had a couple of surgeries and injuries to recuperate from over the years. However, Grand Master Atoun always worked with me at my level to ensure that I continued safely, but most importantly that I continued.Grand Master Atoun has fostered an environment filled with respect and positive reinforcement that I find comfortable to work in, and that I want my daughter to learn in. This is very helpful to me as a bigger and older person to be in a place of acceptance and motivation. There is always a teacher willing to help learn and encourage you, and most importantly help you work through the frustrating parts that snag you. This positive environment is so important, as it not only helps me teach my daughter that we can accept where we are right now, but still work to improve ourselves. Now that I have achieved my first degree black belt, and my daughter is now a red belt, I am confident that not only will she achieve her black belt too, but that I will earn my second degree black belt. I am a working mom showing my daughter what it looks like to do positive things for yourself, how to accept your body for what it is and what it can do while working to improve, and how to achieve goals you set for yourself. Wow! Don’t mess with mama, she’s tough!

Growing up, I had watched numerous movies and videos of martial artists on the big screen as well as on the television. I had always pictured myself to be able to take care of myself during unavoidable confrontations. It’s embarrassing but I will admit that I have started Martial Arts classes several times as a kid and had always quit the class after a week or two. It has always been easy for me to make up a reason or two for quitting during each time.Fast forward to roughly 4 years ago, I had made a life impacting decision to learn Taekwondo with my nephew. Why Taekwondo, if you ask? This was I believed to be an easy way to force myself into a regular exercise routine as well as being able to spend some quality time with my nephew. My nephew Ian, who no longer practices Taekwondo, had a lot of energy but at the same time, he had always been a bit more reserved. I do believe that Taekwondo helped him tremendously by boosting confidence and gave us some additional memories that we will always share. As far as being easy goes, I was completely wrong. Being dedicated to TKD training while balancing a career, marriage, and a new baby boy is tough.Another 4 years have gone by and I can proudly say that I have endured the test of time. I have finally grasped some basic understandings of Taekwondo and hopefully will be able to test to my 1st degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. I am being guided by Grand Master Atoun, numerous instructors at USTA, my classmates, and most importantly the sacrifices my wife must make taking care our son alone when I am attending Taekwondo classes.Looking back, every time I had to quit in Martial Arts, was because of a lack of maturity, perseverance, dedication, and many other needed characteristics. I am not saying I have it all now but hopefully this is a sign of maturity at a minimum. So, what exactly does it mean to earn a Black Belt in USTA? This cannot be answered with a simple answer. My opinion would be that I am finally ready to learn intermediary Taekwondo, in a better shape than I have been since I started this journey, and mentally/physically ready to protect myself as well as my loved ones. The icing on the cake would be that USTA in Allen is accredited and taught by a highly experienced Grand Master. I am not an expert in Taekwondo schools but I am pretty sure that will impact how far a person will go in Martial Arts.My trainings at USTA will be a part of me for as long as I live. In a few years, I want to be able to share this with my son and to continue training with him. Hopefully, he will have the maturity that I didn’t have growing up and enjoy doing so. All in all, I am thankful to have found a great Taekwondo school close to home. It is now time to set a new goal and to attain the next level in Taekwondo.

USTA has changed my life forever for the better. When I was little I would be very fast and bad on the forms. It would be very hard to get a tip. However there were lots of instructors who helped me change my form. After that they teach us a lot of new concepts. Each month we have new concepts like March is ethics. If it isnt the best do the best. Also each belt you get there is a new principle like White Belt is Focus and Punctuality. I would look around a lot on the forms and later I stopped that. Punctuality was hard for me at first and later it got easier doing it until it was basically a lot like an instinct. Also taekwondo makes me not fight with anyone and abuse my power I also learn I will be safe. I can protect myself. Also the instructors are amazing. Whenever we go jogging to improve our stamina when I would start walking the instructors would push me to run faster. Also because of that I am now in the track team in my school. Also USTA has made me better at forms and strives to help your needs. When I was struggling in deputy black belt I went into spring camp and it helped me tremendously. From that I shaved off 2 more months of staying in deputy black belt. In fact I liked USTA so much I told my cousins and they along with their dads joined taekwondo. 1 is a red belt and the other is a high green belt. At first when I was a deputy black belt I was held back 3 months and for a while I was really mad. Later I found out why I was held back and I was striving to get back on track. Being a black belt closes one door of the goal of being a black but it opens a door of opportunity. Black belt means you have to work hard for things and even when you finish your goal you have a new goal.

When I tell people that I am a second-degree black belt, no one should be more astonished or respected than myself. It’s a symbol that I got from this place that helped me to not only achieve a high ranking status in martial arts, but also to realize who I am. Going there for 6 years ( I’m about to be 18) became apart of my life, a habit that I could never go back against- it is never something I would regret changing. I always had a funny attitude towards whatever action I’m performing; I never took things quite serious, but it wasn’t until how the concepts of each belt that I was handed towards my journey kept getting stuck in my head. As I continued to grow, I began to ponder back on these lingering words- focus, punctuality, perseverance, enthusiasm, and leadership- all played a key role in my life. Come to think of it, I entered this dojo to seek what I can do, to test myself, but in the midway of becoming a black belt I lost that focus. I returned back to becoming tired and goofy, not paying attention to why I am at USTA dojo. I got in trouble later on for my slouch and it was soon those words were the ones that brought me back up and placed that purpose of becoming the best that I can be- enjoy and have fun but take your training to the peak. Consequently those concepts soon rippled to my studies, and soon towards everything that I do. Not only did I become stronger as a student, but also as a leader. The SWAT Leadership program is a significant program to begin for becoming a leader. It helped to understand how to lead by example and the attitude one should have. All the things I took for granted on leadership roles in my life such as my parents, the instructors, and teachers. All this was from entering the dojo and the desire to progress and become something outstanding. I definitely recommend this dojo if you really want to prosper as a person and as a leader.

When I first started Taekwondo my main, well only, goal at the time was to get my black belt. However, my attitude soon changed once I got more involved in the academy. As I started advancing through the belts, I started to develop good character. The four years leading up to me getting my 2nd Dan (Degree) black belt, I learned more about myself such as my strengths and weaknesses along with the type of person that I aspire to be.Martial arts does not only teach you how to physically take care of yourself but it also teaches you good ethics. While working towards my first degree black belt, I gained valuable character traits such as patience, confidence, and goal-setting skills. Starting taekwondo, my confidence was practically non-existent; I was a shy 12 year old at the time. However, as time went on I started to gain confidence. When I got to green belt, I got a real confidence boost because I got invited to the SWAT team. I accepted the offer which has been the most rewarding decision of my life so far.Being a SWAT member not only helped me with my performance but it also helped me develop leadership skills. I had to learn to lead by example (on and off the mat) and soon realized that my actions affected the students (whether my actions were good or bad). I realized that I actually have an influence on the students. This made me more aware of what I was doing and saying, because I wanted to be the best I can be and have others follow my lead. Shortly after I got my 1st degree black belt, I got promoted to instructor. Being an instructor has equipped me with the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in any career. It has taught me communication skills, responsibility, and has taught me how to work with a diverse group of people. The year between getting my black belts, I had to become more responsible and mature than ever due to the fact that I was given the task to help run the school along with two other instructors last summer. This was a transforming experience. At the beginning of last summer, I was just a normal 17 year girl who was oblivious to everything that was happening around me. But by the end of summer, I felt more like an adult and was more aware of the people around me and the opportunities that life has to offer.Running the academy was definitely a difficult task but it was very rewarding. I would not trade that experience for the world. I got to experience a sense of responsibility by doing everything from cleaning the bathrooms to helping enroll new students. I even opened and closed the school. This experience helped me learn my strengths and weaknesses. One of my weaknesses was my communication skills which improved by getting the opportunity to talk and work with students of all ages and backgrounds. I learned to talk in front of a large number of students without being intimidated. Another weakness of mine was having to work with the little ninjas (those under the age of six). It was very difficult learning how to work with them but as time went on I started to get the hang of things. This helped me grow as a person and prepare me for the future (because I plan on being a pediatrician which means I will end up working with children all day every day). In my opinion, working with students of all different ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds is the best part of teaching.I am a completely different person than I was a year ago. I am a better person now and am grateful for all the opportunities that I have and have had. I am especially grateful to have Grand Master Atuon’s faith and trust in me to be an instructor at his academy. This academy has instilled in me good ethics and good character, which is more than I could have ever asked for. Very few people get the opportunity to learn or gain these crucial skills and ethics in their lifetime let alone at the age of 17. My experiences with this school are priceless.

Our son has been a student (and now Assistant Instructor) at USTA for almost 5 years. In addition to learning the disciplines of Martial Arts, he has developed much stronger communication and leadership skills. Master Atuon, who owns and runs the Academy, is a very gifted teacher and expects his students to excel in character and skills with encouragement and practice. He also focuses on teaching students how to assist and instruct in class, and provides opportunities for them to excel in leadership. I definitely recommend USTA as place where students (old and young) can develop Martial Arts and leadership skills in a family oriented environment.

The journey was long and hard, but becoming a 2nd Dan black belt was worth it. On November 21, 2016, I received my 1st Dan in TKD. I had tons of fun learning the techniques of TKD. All members of this building/program inside and out are one of the most greatest friends and people I ever had. Thank you for all who help provide the most learning and fun. I recommend this program for people to either have fun or learn the interesting life of TKD. However, If you dont have enough money, I believe that anything is possible in the near future. Cant say enough about USTA, But thank you for the long long journey.

This is my story of my life to second degree black belt. I am Yosuf Arab, and I have been going to U.S.T.A. (United States Taekwondo Academy) for 5 years so far. During my time at U.S.T.A I have learned many memories and have had many different valuable experiences that will last me forever. Those experience have taught me many different things.Throughout my stay at U.S.T.A, there were many principles that I have learned. Every time I get a new belt, a new concept comes with it. That way I learn the importance of the values of martial arts, because as we always say without the phycology of martial arts, then it just becomes street fight. In addition, every month we come up with a new concept. Whether it is being safe, responsible, or anything else and we emphasize on that concept. Then every week of that month we give a way that the concept could apply in your everyday life. For example, when I first started taekwondo, I thought being late to anything was okay as long as it was less than five minutes. I was even known for being late, but now I know that being late is never acceptable.Likewise, I never used to take myself and my life seriously. I always used to just wing everything in my life and didn’t care for much. Now I am getting straight A’s and trying my hardest in school. I even had a 95 average. Now I focus and get my tasks done before I do anything else. I have confidence now in myself and my skills. I see improvement in myself over the past five years I have been in Taekwondo. I know that I can break a board that I would not been have able to break if I had not been in Taekwondo. I acknowledge that I am now able to protect myself, if anyone tried to hurt me. Whether it is through sparring that they teach us, or the Pilipino arnis martial arts, or jujitsu. I have become braver over the years I have been in Taekwondo. I now challenge myself with new techniques that I have never done before and try it. I push myself to the limit in everything that I do. It takes time, but I also gained the strength and knowledge of patience and an indomitable spirit. I realized that everything doesn’t happen quickly in life. You won’t become a billionaire overnight. Life isn’t a video game that you can accomplish an enormous task in a few hours. In life, when you are trying to accomplish something big, it takes time, patience, and perseverance to reach your goal, and Taekwondo at U.S.T.A has taught me all of that. I took me 5 years at the end to reach my second degree black belt, and even though it took me all that time, I enjoyed it and knew that it is worth it.In conclusion, my experiences, memories, and training at Taekwondo has been a great pleasure for me. U.S.T.A. has helped me in many ways, whether it is through the philosophy that they teach or the physical self-defense that I learned, U.S.T.A. has made my life better.

My son has been studying at United States Taekwondo Academy in Allen for about a year and a half, and we could not be more pleased. My older son and I took classes for almost three years at another academy and were ready to get our black belts, but I felt we really had not earned them – that we were just being passed along. When I searched for a school for my younger son, I wanted to make sure he was at a school where he would earn his belts based on performance and merit. USTA has proven to be such a school. Master Atoun, as well as his exemplary instructors, strives to guide each student to their full potential not only with knowledge but also with exceptional instruction. Master Atoun explained the different programs available (6 mos,. 1, 3, or 5 years) and the commitment he expected – we chose the 3 year plan that, if we did our part, could carry my son to black belt. It turns out my son loves it so much and has been so committed that he is actually ahead of schedule! As a mother, I also appreciate the personal attention my son receives, and the school’s investment in my son as a whole person (checking his grades, encouraging personal responsibility, etc.). I consider us very fortunate to have found this school, and know we will be there long after our 3 year commitment is finished!

USTA is a company run by people with little or no Integrity and values. I signed a contract when my son and I joined and we were with them for 2 years. Their program is very slow and geared towards making $s.Being a client for 2 years and having payed close to $5000, when we were faced with a family health emergency (Stage 3 Cancer) oversees and approached him to put our account on hold as were relocating, the owner kept tossing us back and forth between him and the call center. He expected us to pay all the fees and when I disagreed he reported me to credit agency and messed up my history. I have decided not pay them a single dime and pursue legal action.Karate Academies are a longer term commitment and should be symbolic of ethics and discipline - pick ones where the values align with yours.USTA is not the one you should partner with.

When I began taking Tae Kwon Do classes, I initially did it to grow and learn with my two boys. While USTA has helped me to maintain my health, it hasn’t necessarily changed my life on an individual level. However, USTA has changed my life in other ways.USTA has changed my life in a very big way through my wonderful boys. All of us started five years ago when my oldest Miguel was five and my youngest Victor was two at the time. They both began in the little ninja program and they have grown into amazing young man.Miguel struggled through major bullying at the age of four and it continued until he was in the second grade. He had a stutter that was driven by his emotions. He was angry all of the time and struggled to say what he needed and wanted from my wife and I. Over the past five years of taking Tae Kwon Do classes, not only has he overcome his stutter, but also has learned to manage his anger and gained confidence. He is now a first degree black belt and a SWAT member. This has changed our home life by allowing him to have the skills to communicate and have respect for those around him as well as protect himself if ever needed. My youngest Victor began his journey at the age of three and really struggled with focus over the past five years. He still struggles with listening. USTA has helped him to achieve more focus and help him to use it to be more productive. He strives to also be a member of SWAT team and is about to graduate to his high red belt.I love what USTA has done for Miguel and Victor and how much it has changed my life in that way. It helps to have an amazing dojo family and a Grand Master that not only sets the expectations for his students, but also backs up the parents when there are kid behaviour issues.

My name is Deanna Painter and I have been a student with USTA for over 3 years now. I am a working single mother of two boys. I initially stopped by the Richardson academy to sign my boys up and ended up enrolling the entire family. My boys and I loved the classes and both instructors. Not only was the physical training “worth” the cost of the membership, but all 3 of us begun to develop a deeper family connection. The goals set forth were shared and discussed daily in our household and I could see the difference in my kids. One of my boys suffered with anger issues and I could see the change immediately, he would take a step back and think before acting on his emotions. My youngest son was also diagnosed with ADHD when we joined the academy and had to be put on meds. I did not like this at all as a parent. (Two years into the program, he was excelling in school and taken off the medicine.) As a family, we worked hard and quickly began our journey to black belt. The changes in my kids were just, amazing. An opportunity came up for me to move my family to Allen around the same time the Allen location was getting ready to open up. We moved and my family and I continued to study martial arts under the direction of Master Atuon.I joined the SWAT team after only 1.5 years of martial arts training. I was able to see first handedly what goes into “teaching” our students. Master Atuon runs a structured curriculum at the academy. The promises he makes at time of enrollment, he keeps. He gives all students a manual as to what he and his instructors are committed to teaching during a student’s journey to black belt. As a SWAT member we are taught the importance of the student manual. We are taught, the curriculum in and out. We learn how to teach forms, break them down. We have weekly meetings on how to be a good teacher of the art, a leader. We strive to encourage our students and help them get thru the “difficult” times, the difficult forms, the new self defenses and arnis we learn. This we learn on our own journey as students but in depth as a SWAT member.I know as a student, I was told right up front, martial arts is not an overnight success and takes a commitment. USTA provides us the tools and it’s up to us, as students, to put I the time, the classes, the commitment to get our black belts. Sometimes it takes a student only 2 years to get the black belt and others over 5 years. My own personal journey has already been 3 years and 3 months. I am training now to test for black belt.Master Atuon and the academy does not just hand out belts because the time has been put in. Belts are awarded based on not only the number of classes taken weekly, but the skills learned during the classes, the devotion, and the knowledge of what was learned at the current belt level. I say that because it’s not just a form to learn, it’s a set of set defense moves, arnis and a concept for each belt. The concepts are the mental training along the journey. In short, I would recommend either location to any individual or family out there looking to learn martial arts. This school not only offers physical but mental growth. I brings families together. Stop on by and check it out.Deanna, single mom, student and SWAT member.
