I built my gaming rig during shutdown last year. I recently started getting blue screened and couldnt troubleshoot the problem myself so I took it to HomeTown. They were super friendly and told me it would be about a week before I should expect to hear back. They reached out 3 business days later and fixed the issue, while charging a fair price. I highly recommend them!!!

This was the third time I brought my computer to these guys all with the same level of service. They had me fill out a form saying what was wrong with my computer. Then they told me it would be 3 business days before they could look at it. I waited 7 business days without an update and got tired of waiting and started calling for updates and leaving messages. After 11 business days I finally got a call back from them. Long story short they billed me $150 bucks and did nothing that I asked them to do on the form. The tech I talked to said that he would need 3 more days to look into what was the problem.

My laptop took 2.5 weeks for a simple repair and was returned with multiple problems. Their only saving grace is that they fixed the problem that I brought my laptop in for.I brought my laptop to them as the charging port was loose and no longer functioned properly. I bought the required part beforehand and left the laptop and part with them. They said theyd be able to look at around a week after I dropped it off but it ended up taking 2.5 weeks and multiple calls from me to see how it was going. Upon finally getting it back, I see that multiple backing screws have been overtightened and broke through the back, some screws have been replaced with new ones, and some are missing entirely. Not only this, but they did not reattach the speaker connection in the laptop so I had to disassemble it to reattach it.UPDATE: I have just discovered that my battery was also left disconnected upon reassembly, so I had to reopen the laptop again to fix it. The incompetence is astounding.

I posted a rather critical review yesterday regarding HomeTown Techs shortcomings in the areas of communication and pricing. I have deleted that review and replaced it with these comments.While I still believe there are improvements to be made in the way HomeTown Tech communicates with customers, I believe their work is sound and that they are committed to doing the right thing. When Nick found out that I had been charged a higher price than what was quoted, he reviewed the situation and discovered a mistake had been made. He immediately offered to correct the pricing and to refund the excess charge. I should have contacted him before posting my original review.

This place is great, I was missing a tiny little screw to finish a hard drive installation, and asked if I could buy one from them, and Jim (Joe?) Said Well, I cant sell one but I can definitely get one for you.. So I went out to get it and he had it all ready in a little baggy. I said thanks, handed him 5 bucks and ran. Im so appreciative, cheapest I could find was 8 bucks for a kit on Amazon and Id have to wait a few days. Definitely a rocking local business you should go support.

I am giving this business one star because that is about all they deserve. I brought in my laptop to get looked at a few years back they informed me that it would cost more for me to fix my laptop than replace it so that is why I think they deserve at least a star, for their honesty. Now the problem lies with the fact that I have finally got around to pulling my old hard drives out the computer I took to them. I figured with a place that has this high of remarks that I could trust them to do great work, but I found the exact opposite. When I removed my old hard drives from my computer I found a name taped to the outside, I thought that this was the person that worked on my computer but I was wrong. I found that the hard drive they put into my computer belonged to someone else. I then gave them the benefit of the doubt and thought it could possibly be a test drive, but that was also incorrect. They put someone elses hard drive into my computer and now I am worried that the other person has my hard drive in theirs. The most upsetting part about this is the fact that I had very important pictures on that computer that meant a lot to me and the fact that there could be sensitive information still on my hard drive that could include everything including tax information and even my SSN. So moral of this review make sure you look to see if what you receive back from them is the same as what you take them or you might have the same fears as I do.

Was trying to find a local place to find out if my laptop was able to be fixed. I gave them a call and brought it in. They got it up and running again and kept me up to date on my repairs. 100% happy. I will definitely use them again next time I have a problem.

I didnt think there was any hope for my computer. But since it had been the best computer I ever owned I wanted to see if there was something that could be done for it. And I am glad I did! Jim at HomeTown Tech did an amazing job!! It is running better than it ever has. It feels so good to get my old reliable computer back and I didnt have to buy another one. I took my computer to HomeTown Tech to have a new hard drive installed, and every single one of my expectations were exceeded. Like many people, I was a little nervous about leaving such an important piece of technology with a stranger, but Jim is incredibly knowledgeable regarding computers and technology and very personable. He had my computer ready for me a full 36 hours before the estimated completion time, and its in phenomenal condition. I cant recommend this shop highly enough!

A small independent business that showed a tremendous amount of responsibility and personal ethic when I made use of their services.

Hometown Tech did a great job updating our Mac Desktop and a Mac laptop. My son is happy he can play games on his computer again, and we did not have to purchase a new one. Our desk top is running much quicker. It no longer freezes on us.We were very happy with Nicks communication skills. He did a great job explaining some technical information to Janet. He always kept us informed on the progress of our project. We had an issue with the memory card installed (bad card from the factory). He came out right away and installed a new one for no charge. They even followed up a couple of months later to ask if we were still happy with the work performed.

Asked for a couple of different services.One involved recovery of data from an apparently failed external drive. An estimate by a competitor was over $900, which I declined, and the drive was returned to me in pieces. Nick agreed to give it a try and successfully recovered the data for a very reasonable price and by the promised date.Encouraged, I gave him a crack a desktop computer I thought would benefit by a clean install of Win 10 instead of the compromise Win 7 upgrade. Again, the work was done as promised for the advertised price. A follow-up visit to deal with an added detail was met with quick, courteous service to finish the job.Nick and his team work hard to assure they dont over-promise. They explain pricing and procedures carefully, and care very much that their customers are informed and satisfied while they try to keep a going concern going.Very pleased to know theyre available and reliable.

I own a small business in Ames and there is always a lot to do so anything that make things run smoother or faster is great. I was using an outdated computer system that couldnt handle the amount of work I was trying to do.So I called over to HomeTown Tech, Nick was great he knew exactly what I needed to make my system run top notch. After a short phone conversation we set up a time for him to come look at my system. He suggested that I upgrade to a new computer. I did as he suggested and not only did he save everything from my old computer he installed every program I had before. He came up with a networking setup form me so my two computers can be linked together as well as with the printer. He made everything so easy! I cant believe how great and fast this new setup is.Anytime I have ANY computer problems I just call him. He is local and his prices are above fair, the same thing I bought from him Best Buy wanted $300 more for after there Installation Fees. Best computer support you can hire!

Called for a price estimate but they are so bent on the fifty dollar diagnosis fee. I already know whats wrong with it they just want to use the diagnosis as a guarantee that you will do business with them to recoup your fee. I suggest looking elsewhere I was able to find what I needed without outrages fees.

BEYOND AMAZING Experience with HomeTown Tech!!!We are a local business with a complicated set up as far as our servers go and after a move to our new location our internet was going in and out constantly and we would go for week long stretches without internet with no explanation for why it was not working. We finally were at our wits end, having no internet for almost a month, when our internet provided suggested we call HomeTown Tech. That was the absolute BEST call we could have made! These guys know their stuff! They stop at nothing to fix even the worst of problems. When my laptop wouldnt power on and it appeared that Id either have to pay nearly the same cost to have it fixed or have it replaced; they dug in, researched, and found a quick and easy solution, and then SHOWED ME how to fix it myself if the problem ever happened again. If you have a serious problem and the warranty is expired these are the guys to go to, hands down.

They were able to fix my laptop and it has been working for a few weeks now. Was not done in a reasonable amount of time. Took about two months to get a main board replaced after being quoted at three weeks.

To start I should explain Ive been building PCs all my life. Im usually pretty well versed in their operation and sorting out my own issues as well as family and coworkers. So when I say that I ran into a problem that had me and my network of fellow geeks completely stumped youll understand that it was something serious.I attempted repairs myself twice and continued to run into the same PC killing problem. Nothing made sense. I visited my local PC repair shop. Explained my problem and was greeted with a deer in the headlights look that inspired little confidence. I called another location and explained the issue. The tech explained to me that he would be of little help as he would just be trying the things Ive tried already and did not have the resources to test my high end hardware. Needless to say I was losing hope rapidly.Finally I brought my rig into Hometown Tech. I called the following Tuesday ( I dropped it off late on a Friday) and was greeted by the owner of the establishment. I explained my problems and he assured me he would be taking care of it personally. Throughout the day I received calls with updates as he systematically tested each individual component eliminating them as the source of the issue. Finally he located two separate but solvable issues with my rig.I am beyond impressed with HomeTown Tech. These guys are the real deal. Knowledgeable, courteous and thorough. While visiting Ames for business, I found I had left my laptop charger in Michigan. Nick came to the rescue! Nick was gracious enough to get my computer charged up and ready to go for my meetings. Not even a day after getting my brand new HP laptop in the mail it broke on me. HP claimed it was a hardware issue and said I needed to send it in for repairs which would take ANOTHER 2 weeks to do. Hometown Tech was able to identify and fix the problem in less than a week for around $100. It wasnt a hardware issue like HP had wrongly assumed. They also cleaned out some overlapping/unneeded extra programs for me and explained everything they did in terms that I could understand. Great customer service all-around, and the follow-up call was much appreciated! Also, who wouldnt Love snuggling with an adorable old pup while waiting?!

About the only negative I could say is that they seemed a little slow. Ive never taken my computer into a repair shop before and not gotten it back by the next business day. With Hometown Tech it took until the next business day for them to let me know what was wrong, then another four days to fix it. This was slightly inconvenient since I need it for work, but I made due.Otherwise, I have nothing but glowing things to say about my experience. Their staff was incredibly friendly and professional, and so helpful. They let me know every step of the way what they were doing and the cost, and even let me know of a secondary problem my computer had that they could fix for minimal cost. Highly recommend, Ill definitely be taking my computers back to them if I need help in the future!

In addition to working with Nick to get some obscure parts, I also just purchased a new laptop from him. I am thrilled with this computer (Dell Latitude), but the reason I really like HomeTown Tech is the personal service.Unlike the big-box stores, where you have to explain your needs again and again to multiple people each time you visit, Nick is a *real person* and takes the time and energy to make you feel like an important customer (as opposed to just a faceless wallet ... coughcoughBestBuycoughcough). Heck, he even personally delivered my new computer to me in the middle of the night, at like 1:00am! (I needed it quickly and have a very unconventional schedule) You will NOT get that kind of personalized service ANYwhere else!ALSO... Nick really knows what hes talking about.
