I’m not normally a person who writes reviews but I had to shout out Devin Richardson for taking the absolute dumpster fire that was my hair prior and making it look so dreamy. Photos don’t even do the transition justice. Also Devin was just chill as hell and lovely and kind to chat with but also didn’t seem to mind when I wanted to do some quiet reading. 15/10 couldn’t recommend higher.

What a wonderful experience! I am VERY picky about my hair, and Emily cut and styled my hair perfectly! It had been about a year since I had my hair cut and needed one really badly. She was easy to talk to, efficient, and made me feel like I wasnt at a school, but at a salon.Just FYI, if you do go to Douglas J Aveda Institute, you are getting a hair treatment by students studying the trade. So, it might take longer than if you were at a formal salon. They make sure they take time to explain to their teachers what they plan on doing with their customers hair and have their teachers assess the final product. The time is a learning experience for the student, a hands-on assessment, and a chance for a teacher to make any adjustments. Im happy to say that Emily received high praise for her cut and style. When Emily finishes her studies, I plan on visiting her to get my hair done regularly... and I live an hour away.Take a chance on these students, they work hard. I am so happy I went to the institute and was able to have my hair cut by a past student of mine. It is always a wonderful experience seeing my past middle and high school students thrive.

You cant beat $34 for a formal updo. Its as nice a style as Id get done anywhere else and makes me feel special and pretty at a variety of work and family parties. Ive recommended the salon to friends getting married as well. The student stylists are overseen by instructors, so multiple people ensure you leave feeling happy with your appearance.

So giving 3 stars because this place was great when I was a broke college student and needed something simple but also warning others to not go here if you’ve already invested a lot of money in your hair. I spent close to a year and $600-ish dollars to get my hair back to blonde and loved my color and just asked for a couple highlights in the same beigy color but whatever they did seemed to completely undo it. After I washed my hair later on after my appointment here my roots were yellow, my hair had an orange tint to it and my bangs don’t match my roots. Going to another salon to hopefully have this mistake fixed. Including before and after pics. Before it’s the sandy blonde, after is the root shot

I had an amazing experience here! This was the first time Ive ever dyed my hair, so I was nervous, but Sam C did an absolutely beautiful job with a neutral balayage! Sammy made sure to know EXACTLY what I wanted and continued checking with educators throughout the process to make sure everything was going smoothly.

I absolutely love coming to this place - while the service is done by students, they always have an experienced educator come by to check on the do and Ive never had a bad experience here. My most recent visit was a perm with Ashley M - amazing experience working with her and absolutely love how my hair turned out! I highly recommend coming here for any styling you need done! :)

Beth Perry (@bethstylehair on Instagram) did my haircut with a botanical treatment, and I had a great experience! My hair feels so much softer after the treatment. I really needed it after so much bleaching in past months.I was a little nervous going to Aveda since I’ve heard mixed reviews from friends. But, I figured I just wanted a simple cut with no layers and a conditioning treatment, so not too risky. I was more than happy walking out.Beth was very professional and kind. I could tell she was very passionate about hair. This is a hair school, so they make it very clear that you are being serviced by a student. However, Beth’s supervisor came to check a few times to check on the progress of my service. I loved my cut, but my only complaint was that it was a bit blunt for my liking, but Beth’s supervisor was more than happy to help. I really wish I could have left a tip for her, but students are not allowed to receive tips.Definitely recommend Beth for your hair needs! If you have any issues with your hair, don’t be afraid to speak up bc they will do what they can to make you happy. Also, there’s a 10% discount for students on top of their already low prices.

I got a fantastic haircut by Emilie Eggerding -- she listened carefully to what I wanted, checked at every step that I liked what she was doing, and took the time to make sure it was done perfectly. She was also easy to talk to and made sure I felt comfortable in her chair! Her instructor Allie was very helpful and kind too.

I had a wonderful first visit to Aveda. My wife booked me for a Stress Relief Therapy session with a massage and some aroma therapy. I’m not big on booking these types of things, but it was very nice and relaxing.Karlen did an excellent job making me feel comfortable, explaining everything she was doing, and it was a very enjoyable experience.The stress relief included a quick foot exfoliation, neck and shoulder massage, scalp massage, hand and arm massage, then back massage, and finally a foot massage. Steamed towels, pleasant, subtle scents throughout, and some relaxing music.Everything felt very safe and masks are required, but they made it work, even still.I would definitely recommend a visit and if you get paired with Karlen, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.10/10 would do again.

I had never been to Aveda before, but some friends of mine highly recommended it. Even though I was a bit wary knowing that it is students who perform the services, I decided to give it a try. Sarah N was my hairdresser, and she did a fantastic job. It had been at least 6 months since my previous haircut and my ends were in rough shape. My hair is pretty long and difficult to work with. But Sarah was so patient and friendly. I wanted just a few inches off for a healthy trim, and she did just that. The whole time she carried on a pleasant conversation, and I felt really comfortable. I had also just come from work, where I had had my hair up in a ponytail all day. She thoroughly washed it and knowledgeably explained to me the products she was putting in it. The whole time she was very professional. At the end, the instructor made just a few small tweaks, and Sarah was very receptive to the advice her instructor gave. Sarah then blow dried my hair and put an anti-frizz product in it. When I left, my hair felt silkier than it had ever been. Overall, highly satisfied with this place and glad that these students get a chance to gain more hands-on experience. Will definitely be back.

I had a great experience getting my hair done here, Haley did a wonderful job! I got about four inches off and my hair feels so soft and healthy. I will definitely go again in the future!

I loved my experience here! Elaine was my hairstylist and she did an amazing job, addressing everything I wanted done (cutting some length off, reducing hair volume). Their botanical treatment was also excellent and rejuvenated my hair to a silky texture. Ill definitely be coming back here whenever I need my hair cut or styled!

Peyton did an amazing job! Explained everything well and listened 100% to all of my requests, super nice and welcoming and my hair turned out PERFECT!! I had a 60-minute facial with Delaney C. last week and Im already hoping to book another! Delaney was so friendly, sweet, and personable. I felt like she really understood my skin concerns and recommended products while also allowing me to give input on product selection. She clearly knew her stuff but also wasnt pushy with selling products to me. The atmosphere was so relaxing and I was even treated to a foot bath during the consult portion.

I always enjoy my time at Aveda. The students are working hard to do a good job, and the whole experience is affordable enough to go as frequently as I want. The one thing I, as an older person, would have liked to see at this moment is the students and staff wearing masks (though I asked and was assured that vaccinations were a condition of working/studying there).

Update: manager reached out and was very kind, offering to help meI went in for a haircut, botanical treatment, and shine treatment to improve the condition of my hair. I guess whoever used the bottle with shine treatment prior to my stylist did not clean it out, and it had blue dye in it. It was only in my hair for about two minutes total, and the student noticed pretty immediately. She and the instructor mixed up a detox solution to try to take it out of my hair. My hair is no longer blue, but I went in with a cool, blonde balayage I got a few months ago that was maintained nicely, and now my hair is somehow light brown without any appearance of highlights. The detox smelled like ammonia, which I just looked up and is pretty bad for structural integrity of hair. Im upset about this because I went in saying that I wanted to improve the condition of my hair. I guess it may have been necessary for all of the blue to come out, but its still upsetting because I try to take really good care of my hairs quality since I lighten it occasionally.The haircut is perfect and exactly what I wanted. I received all the services I asked for, and the student was not at fault and very apologetic. She was really great and deserves 5 stars for her performance. She wasnt afraid to ask her instructor questions which is commendable. But the general quality of my hair (besides removal of split ends during the cut) is noticeably poorer to touch because of somebody elses negligence. I thought that the darker appearance was lighting (it was sunny when I went in and it was raining and dark by the time we finished), but I saw several colleagues after my appointment and they all asked me if I dyed my hair from blonde to brown, as did my roommates.I attached photos in similar lighting of what my hair color looked like a few weeks ago (on the left) and what I came out with (on the right) for reference.

The environment was very calming, relaxing, and serene. Ralana made my experience an excellent and inviting one. Her soft and pleasant voice, along with her gentle touch, and attentive nature made my experience top-notch. I look forward to returning for my next appointment.

The service has always been top notch. Each student stylist I have worked with has been very professional - but also not too proud to ask for help from a more experienced stylist. Of course, the rates are extremely reasonable, but the quality of the work and products are excellent. I recommend then highly!

Olivia did a fantastic job recoloring my hair! I needed my roots lightened and 2 tones of blue recolored in a peekaboo style. She was professional, courteous, and communicated very well. She checked in with her educator every step of the way, so I felt confident as we progressed. I was happy with the price I paid, service received, and felt amazing as I emerged back into downtown. I went to Elaina W. for a 90 minute facial and it was absolutely AMAZING! She is very professional, knowledgeable, and good at what she does. I couldn’t help but fall asleep half way through it was so relaxing (I woke up to myself snoring a couple of times). I will definitely be returning for another facial!!! Great Job.

I’ve had my hair done twice here, and I’m in love. Both stylists did exactly what I was looking for with my hair. They were also very kind and quite professional. I’m so excited about their move to Kerrytown.

I had a full head highlight done by Angie and she was amazing! A few other staff members helped out as well but no matter who it was, they were really friendly. My service went overtime because of how much hair I had and it was time for some staff and students to leave but the staff were really accommodating and made sure that my service was complete before leaving. Definitely coming back!

I got the botanical treatment and hair cut from Alexis. She was professional and friendly. I would have loved to hear about the products she was using. I was a little surprised that the instructor just gave a cursory glance and said good job. I have been there many times before and usually they check to see how the work has been done and correct mistakes, if any. All in all, it was fine

Got a lovely haircut that I absolutely adore here! Not to mention there were dividers up at every station and everyone was wearing masks so I felt safe. My hairdresser Shelby listened to what I wanted to do with my hair and also had great conversations with me the whole time. It was a great experience!

I had such a fun experience here. I got a botanical treatment from Jillian, and she explained the process and products (and their ingredients) in detail to me which I really appreciated. My hair felt amazing and it smelled great! She also curled my hair, and my hair normally doesn’t hold up a curl so she really worked some magic there. She had me cracking up the entire time, I’m definitely going back to see her in the future!

I had a most enjoyable experience Saturday at the Douglas J Aveda Institute. Treasure Weltch performed Stress Relief Therapy that went way beyond my expectations. Not only did I leave the Institute calm and relaxed, I had positive energy the rest of the weekend. She was super attuned to my needs and explained each part of the treatment before proceeding. She worked wonders on my stressed out body!Kudos to the Institute staff for turning out such a professional as Treasure. Highly recommended.

Claire Cotter is extremely talented, professional, and super friendly! I had an AMAZING experience and the cut I received exceeded all of my expectations!! She listens to all of your hair concerns and preferences and works with you to achieve the look that you want! You can tell that she wants the best for the customer because of the amount of precision and detail she spends on the cut. Her peers and instructors definitely thought highly of her as well. I recently got my haircut from Grace Dudash and I am super happy about it! Grace will work with you to give you the look that you are aspiring. She asked me thoroughly what I was going for, worked with me to see the best fit. After the first cut, I requested the back to be a little shorter, she worked with me to cut the back side as I wanted it. She did a phenomenal job, the photos prove it. ☺️

It was a fun experience and the environment was very welcoming and relaxing.Jillian was patient and always asked questions during my haircut to make sure she was meeting my expectations of what I wanted.I would highly recommend making an appointment with Jillian. In the past, I have really loved this place. Yet when they are not following current safety protocols, they are harming their customers and their employees. I was disappointed to learn that Douglas J Aveda Institute is not following current safety COVID protocols.From Washtenaw County Health Dept website (updated Aug 9, 2021): The CDC recommends that everyone (including fully vaccinated individuals) wear a mask in public indoor settings to help prevent spread of COVID-19, especially the Delta variant, and to protect others.It is NOT OK to endanger your customers and your workers by going against current health guidelines.Sadly, I will not be frequenting you again until your rules are in keeping with keeping the public safe.

I loved the experience! I have never been to a spa, had a massage, or any kind of facial type thing before. This was a wonderful first experience and I cant wait to go back! We had an appointment with a coupon, we couldnt give a gratuity tip for some reason. We think it had something to do with the coupon. I wish we could have, because she was amazing! She was extremely informative and kind. My general anxiety usually repels me from people, but I didnt feel that way toward her in the slightest. She guided me through the whole process and was very gentle. I had a facial for this experience and she included working with my feet, my arms, my hands, and my scalp. The aromas used were amazingly calming. This was super beneficial for my mental health too. It seemed like an immediate transformation from where I was when I walked in. The mask situation was rough, but everyone had them on. The whole experience was overall wonderful. I highly recommend this place especially if you are new to the whole massage/ salon / self care thing.

I recently got hair color and a cut with Fallon. She was truly amazing!!! I wear a crown topper hair piece because Im very thin on top. She did an amazing job matching the hair color to my wig. I also needed my hairpiece trimmed up to blend in with my hair. I was really nervous about it and she truly did an amazing job blending it all together without taking too much off.Fallon is super talented and will go far. She was also very nice and down to earth. I left there feeling very happy and highly recommend her!! The educators and front desk employees are always so kind and professional also!

I called to ask before I made appointment at the Ann Arbor institute. Contrary to previous review, neither COVID vaccination nor masking is required of student or staff at the institute. I cancelled my GroupOn stating this as the reason I cancelled. They need to get with the times. At the very least, there should be mandatory masking. They are 1 block from University of Michigan campus that requires vaccine AND masking of all students, employees & contractors. Anyone else entering campus must be masked.

I got a great balayage and cut for half of what it would usually cost. It was cool to have a student do my hair. It was her first time doing a balayage but she did a great job. And the instructors checked in frequently to see how things were going.

OH.MY.GOD my experience was PERFECT 😭 The whole staff was so professional and welcoming- even the receptionists were so courteousmy hair stylist was Sarah N. and she was the absolute sweetest 💗 She was very professional and she took care of all the tiny details. She did everything to make me feel comfortable. Im a hijabi so she made sure that I would have total privacy so I wont be seen by anyone! She also kept asking me if the temperature of the blow-dryer was okay & made sure my opinions mattered 😍 she did the whole process so carefully and was really gentle with my hair 😌I cant believe they did such a good job on my hair 😱 it was just $15 which is such a reasonable rate considering the fact that I got my hair shampood, conditioned, AND blowdried too! I got a shoulder-length bob with layers and yall- layers are SO hard to do and Sarah did them SO WELL. Ive been to other salons and idk I never felt satisfied with their work yknow 😕ALSO the hair products and leave-ins left my hair so smooth and SOFT 😍 they use high quality sulfate & alcohol free products. my hair was sooo damaged and it feels a lot healthier already if that makes any sense lol? The right products can make such a difference!Anyways sarah was super fun to talk to and I felt so comfortable and happy. The most surprising thing is that Sarah recently started working here and I couldnt even tell that! 😍 ( btw yall better give sarah a raise fr 😤 shes so hardworking and talented I swear)So yeah, I just loved the experience overall & Im so satisfied with my haircut like yall I was NOT expecting it be this good 😍😍 I got so many compliments from friends/family and all the credit goes to the beautiful staff ❤️ My hair is completely unrecognizable, its so voluminous and full of life now 😍😍 Im definitely coming back here again and I hope that anyone whos reading this comment tries this place out coz its 1000% worth it. 💗

They destroyed my hair. I asked for a caramel/blonde balayage and I have naturally lightish brown hair. It doesn’t look at all like a balayage. My roots are dark and then quickly transitions into bright yellow hair. No nice blending, or any sort of dimension to my hair. It looks awful, and it’s completely botched. They offer a free “re-do” but only by another student. I asked them nicely if they could get an instructor to fix my hair, but they said no, only students work on hair there. You’d think they’d make an exception for messing up someone’s hair so badly… If you’re getting a really basic haircut or something I’m sure it’s fine to go here. But honestly, for anything trickier, I wouldn’t risk it. I’m now in the position of either letting a student who doesn’t know what they’re doing to try to fix it, or to go to a real salon to pay hundreds to get it professionally fixed.

Emily did my facial and not only was she extremely professional, knowledgeable and passionate about her vocation but genuinely caring and kind and executed all the steps perfectly. It was refreshing to be with her and see how driven she was! This school has equipped her with the tools to go far and it was such a treat to be pampered at such an inexpensive rate.

It was exactly the me time experience I was needing.Covid precautions were very good re social distancing and masks required.I was very comfortable in the facility. I got a groupon offer for a facial/eyebrow wax and was a little nervous, but it went better than expected! She was great in recommending brow shapes and facial treatments that catered to my skin type. 10/10 would recommend her and this salon for anyone looking for a budget option for facials/waxing!

I was persuaded by wifey to try out the experience of getting a facial treatment at the Aveda Institute recently. I totally understand all the hype now. I am reviewing now, a week later, to accredit the experience of getting a botanical therapeutic skin treatment for the way my face continues to look and feel. The wonderful woman who performed the wizardry of fantastic aromatics was named Mercedes, and she was able to clear up areas of my face that tend to shimmer, while also balancing out my dryer areas nearest to my scalp. I am enjoying the effects of having that first time facial experience, still. And oh yes, the most noteworthy part of having a facial treatment here is the wonderful scalp massage finale. Worth while. Entirely.

Went in for a haircut plus treatment and Ariyanna Carlin delivered exactly what I was asking for. She was actively listening to my needs and handled it with professionalism. She also gave me concrete suggestions on how to take care of my hair in order to achieve the type of volume I desired, even recommended some hair products which I found very helpful! Overall, I am glad that Ariyanna took care of me and was very satisfied with my visit.

Had an excellent facial from Ralana Fuller this afternoon. She was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable! I came in to treat myself and leave feeling relaxed and she made sure I left feeling just that. Also, you can’t beat the price for the great service given. Highly recommend!!

I had my very first facial with Sarina Grishaber. She made my first experience a special one! It was so relaxing! She talked me thru each step of the process. Last week I went for a pretty elaborate color & botanical treatment. I was helped by super friendly people at the front desk, Megan and Mackenzie! They made sure that I was taken care of and heard. When it was time for my appointment, Natalie was super diligent in asking me what I wanted, and telling me how we were going to get there! The whole time, we were laughing up a storm and telling stories to each other. (: The instructor that helped us had Natalie try a new technique, which ultimately produced a color that wasn’t like the picture I had shown, but I love the outcome anyway. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because the instructor didn’t explain why she was using the technique she used, and although my hair turned out super cute, I don’t think the technique was right for the effect I asked for. With that being said, Natalie was absolutely fantastic, and the experience was worth every penny. I will absolutely be coming back.

EDIT: I came back a few months after . This time to avail the facial and eyebrow wax service. The one who attended to me was Halle Guinon. She was really sweet and really thorough with the whole service. I didnt feel rushed or taken for granted. I really like what she did with my eyebrows! Oh my God! It was my first time having my eyebrows waxed. She was gentle the whole time and really made sure my eyebrows are in perfect shape. I am so happy of the results! Kudos to Halle Guinon!I got a really good deal for this service. I availed the Haircut and Botanical Treatment for just $ 15. I went in earlier than my appointment but the girls at the reception were really sweet and were able to accommodate me and assigned a stylist for me right away. I was lucky to be given Erika Fuller. She was really professional and took her time to take good care of my hair. She was really focused and I can see her passion in what she do. I like how my hair turned out and she gave me tips on how to manage my natural curls. I would definitely go back to avail Erikas services. Overall, I am happy with my experience with Douglas J Aveda Institute and the workers/students there.

Great experience my stylist was Jilian she was sweet and funny I was very comfortable my highlights turned out great planning on going back to her for low lights very soon. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for great service
