This place is fantastic. My son is enrolled in the kids Judo and I haven’t seen a smile that big on him in a while. The staff are all very knowledgeable and my son’s sensei are some of the best teachers I have ever seen. They stress safety and work with all the different levels of students consistently while making the class extremely fun. If you are interested as an adult or for your child I HIGHLY suggest you give them a call and come watch a class.

My 8y/o son and I have trained there. I started training there because of the resumes of the instructors... they are world class instructors with training/education/experience that is (as far as I could find in their respective arts) unmatched anywhere in the Midwest (if not outside Japan!) we really feel like we’re part of an extended family at JMAC. My 8y/o trained there and LOVED the teachers and class structure. Best kids martial arts program in the area, hands-down.

I have attended JMAC since 2009, and have yet to find a school of its caliber. Its instructors are top-notch with lineages that trace straight from the founders of some of the traditional Japanese martial arts. I can also safely consider this place to be a second-home. The people that train here are fantastic. The place is safe. The material is challenging. Its an honor to train here.

As a beginner with little athletic experience, I was hesitant to throw myself into the world of martial arts. After my first interaction with Suino-Sensei, I knew JMAC would be the best place to learn properly, safely, and challenge myself in a demanding but supportive environment. This place is defined by its world-class instructors and friendly students. If you are even remotely interested in learning a martial art, you should consider joining the JMAC community. Youll never look back!

Simply the best Dojo Ive ever been to. Its rare to find a place that so perfectly balances being respectfully formal and friendly.Instructors are highly knowledgeable and welcoming to anyone, with any background and any skill level.Focusing on Structure and form, this is not the sort of place you go to learn to fight quickly. Rather it is that special brand of instruction that encourages lifelong learning in the art.I live an hour from the dojo and still try to make it to class 3 times a week. Its THAT good.

I have been in and around martial arts for many years...decades.JMAC is the best dojo one can imagine. The senseis are quite literally the best in the world.Training is challenging, yet safe and fun. The program is systematic, yet engaging and innovative.JMAC is working to preserve the rich legacy of the traditional Japanese arts .The dedication, commitment, and skill of all the senseis is evident in every class.I’ve been a member for about 2 1/2 years and love it more each month.Thank you JMAC.I can not recommend JMAC highly enough.UPDATEIve never done a lot of Calesthenics, but started during the JMAC 18 while Off work due to COVID.It has been great! Its fun yet challenging, and every day is different. Were encouraged to do what we can with what weve got. And everyone can work at their own pace or modify as needed. But knowing others are there too (on zoom), helps to keep me going! And its only 18 minutes, early in the day, so I have the rest of the day ahead.Since doing the JMAC 18, I have better endurance, better upper body strength, and less knee pain.Ive even been known to do old workouts on off days!Short version: Im hooked!

JMAC is an amazing place for training in martial arts. I have trained at JMAC since 2006. The people and environment encourage learning and development, both in the martial arts and at a personal level. The instructors are experts in their arts, and are very proficient at teaching. The students are friendly and positive to work with, and everyone helps each other to learn and excel. My wife and son also train at JMAC, and we cant imagine going anywhere else.

JMAC is amazing! Two years ago my daughter started martial arts in the Washington DC area and had a good experience. After moving to Dexter we started the search for a new dojo, hoping we would find a similarly positive experience. What we found was Japanese Martial Arts Center and an experience far exceeding our highest hopes. We found our dojo and a place my daughter can go to find strength, power and the ability to be still, as well.

I have known and trained with Suino Sensei for over 30 years, and he is one of those rare people who can both perform and instruct at the highest level of their art. As a martial artist I marvel at his skills, and as an educator I appreciate his ability to articulate and teach the principles that are fundamental to the arts he promotes. One need only read one of his many books, or view one of his demonstrations to sense the depth of his knowledge, experience, and dedication. Do yourself a favor, and visit JMAC. Watch a class and see if traditional Japanese martial arts could be the thing thats missing in your life.

JMAC is the best traditional martial arts school I have come across in 40 years of martial arts training. Sensei Suino and his instructors manage to harmonize eastern formality and discipline with a western sensibility that stresses the fulfillment of individual potential. It is a privilege to be part of such an outstanding organization.

Sensei Suino and his crew are martial artists who take their craft and discipline seriously, but keep all the fun and love intact. This is not the place to go if you want to get your belts in one-month increments for just showing up. They are great teachers of the fundamentals and they have huge patience for everyone, but they really make sure that kids are learning and not just graduating for the sake of graduating. Thats the way it should be IMO (sort of like life, right?). Above all, they know that kids will only be dedicated to the art if they are having fun, so they definitely inject plenty of fun and variety into their teaching. My 10-year old has been going 2x/week for about 2 years and it has made an amazing difference in his maturity, kindness, respect, responsibility, and resilience. One of his favorite parts of the lessons is mat chat where they sit in a small circle and have a quiet chat with Sensei about honesty, integrity, responsibility, kindness, etc. Its something new each week and Im so glad that we can count on Sensei and his team to drill these great values into our kids.

We went through a pretty exhaustive search before landing on JMAC. Most of the other dojos in town didnt seem to understand what karate is about; they either dumbed down the curriculum for the kids, or simply treated karate as just another brawling class. The only other place we even considered for our son was literally twice as expensive as JMAC and even then, there was the nagging feeling that they werent truly educating their kids.JMAC, on the other hand, felt right from the moment we walked in the door. The children are taught discipline and respect, but they all seem to be having a great time at the same time. My son has blossomed and I can see how much stronger, more coordinated, and more confident he has become in six short months. The kids have to actually WORK for their promotions, and they are learning that the good things in life come only from trying hard. In short, we are extremely pleased with the dojo and would highly recommend it to anyone who asks.

My son wanted to learn Iaido this year. We did not know anything about it. His grandpa was a paratrooper and a green beret and encouraged him to learn martial arts and particularly jujutsu. JMAC is a true Japanese dojo. We did not know what good exercise one gets with Iaido. It fantastic. Most students are serious adults and the environment is really not bad at all for our teenager. Were looking forward to many years of Iaido and hope our son will decide to also add another martial art. Here is what he thinks about JMAC:JMAC is, in my experience, a very open place. Although I am introverted in new areas, the people that actually speak to me and to others around me are very nice, and make conversation very fluid.JMAC is a fantastic place to learn martial arts. Its a very nice environment with clean mats and it looks like what youd expect a modern dojo to look like. I take Iaido, which is work with a japanese sword, and its an art that requires diligence. Thankfully, Sensei Suinu is a very helpful person and helps me through the difficulties in technique that I have with Iaido. The work done at JMAC is largely based on mental focus and respect of your upper-class-men. Every movement should be carefully thought out and done slowly in your mind before executing it in reality.JMAC is a very great learning environment as well, starting you off with great warm ups, and a great work-out as you learn the most basic of basic forms and eventually (after like, 10 years - its very arduous and the forms are difficult]) you can learn the most difficult of forms and execute the easy forms with the most minute attention to detail, to flow your forms seamlessly from one to the other and to make the entire form look like a single movement.

JMAC was my first introduction into martial arts. I have been studying Judo there for about 5 years. The facility is the best in the area with special spring loaded floors for improved safety over traditional dojos.Although the facility is excellent, it is the people that make up the JMAC community that really make the experience terrific. JMAC has a highly skilled and experienced teaching staff who believe in the value of martial arts and want to share that value with everyone who is willing to learn. I believe that it is the quality of the leadership at JMAC that attracts excellent people to train with. I look forward to each day of training with other great members of JMAC.

This place is wonderful for women who want to learn martial arts. JMAC does an incredible job of balancing the traditional Japanese martial arts experience with cutting edge science and an approach that suits all types of motivated people. Ive trained at JMAC and with Suino-Sensei, Holland-Sensei, and Morris-Sensei and at ITAMA in Lansing. The experience was challenging but exciting, and I not only learned self-defense, but also got fit and learned a lot of skills that I could apply throughout my life. JMAC gets my highest recommendation!

Wrestling since ‘77, Ive been studying Judo, training in the Washtenaw County area since 2001. Last year I expanded my horizons to include JMAC, and I have consistently enjoyed training at JMAC. Their Sensei, Judoka and dojo are all outstanding. Each head instructor establishes and tends to the physical environment and the culture of their dojo, and Suino Sensei does an outstanding job at JMAC. I find they offer an excellent balance of Tradition, Technique and Training. As a wrestler and seasoned Judoka (Nikyu) I expect and appreciate a clean and safe environment in which to train, and find this at JMAC. I have seen what dirty mats can do (wiped out a college teammate with a staph infection-missed the season) and appreciate the cleanliness of their facility. Before training at JMAC I read online about their “floating” or spring based tatami (mat). It has to be experienced to be appreciated. Judo is about learning to fall, to give and take falls, and to ensure the mutual welfare and benefit of fellow Judoka. The tatami at JMAC lives up to the hype and “gives” to ensure a safe fall, while being firm enough to support standing and throwing. It’s Goldilocks: Not too soft, not too firm; it’s just right. The Sensei have high expectations for the Judoka and have the training and experience to be able to expect and ensure members are able to push themselves to their personal limits, and stretch for goals in a safe environment. I find a great balance of traditional Judo in addition to time for guided free play, both Nage-waza ( throwing ) and Katame-waza ( ground/grappling )Highly recommended

Iaido is not a very common martial art in the united states and a highly skilled instructor if far less common. However, both can be found at JMAC. Nicklaus Suino Sensei studied in Japan at the home dojo of the late Yamaguchi-Katsuo (Meijin and 10th Dan), was four-time All-Tokyo forms champion at his rank between 1989 and 1992, and represented the Kanto region in the All-Japan tournament in Kyoto in 1992. As an instructor, Suino Sensei teaches not only the external particulars, but the bones of the art. I say this with the perspective of a student of over 10 years. In addition, Suino Sensei is supremely dedicated to providing an enjoyable and positive experience for his students. Indeed, perhaps even more important than which martial art one studies is with whom one studies. In the JMAC instructors Nicklaus Suino and Daniel Holland one will find not only technical expertise, but passion, creativity, and alacrity in the practice of martial arts. In my experience, one could not ask for better teachers and training partners. JMAC is quite simply a fantastic place to practice martial arts.

This is an amazing place to train! Suino Sensei, his staff and his students are absolutely outstanding. The instructors at JMAC not only can do the techniques taught with great expertise, but they know how to transfer that knowledge onto you with ease. Theyll get you moving like a pro in no time. Its a very clean and beautiful environment, with super great people to train with. Suino Sensei, owner and head instructor of JMAC, is top notch in his field. You could not ask for a better place to learn.
