The planners, zoning and public works departments are completely useless. I have emailed the department heads 86 times in 2.5 years. They dont reply, refuse to view problems, refuse to meet, deflect and ignore problems to approve plans, lie about standards, and invent new ways to stop construction projects. As an engineer and urban planner who moved to Asheville to build 4 houses, this citys advertising propaganda is the purest form of investment baiting. I have met dozens of people that invested in this city only to be tangled up in weaponized bureaucracy ultimately wasting tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars. DO NOT invest in this scam town.

Nate Pennington is the new County Planning Director for Buncombe. I have complete faith in his ability to serve the citizens of Buncombe County. Buncombe County is a complex mix of rich, middle class and the poor and there is no magic fix to housing and other problems. However, take the time to meet and speak to Nate and you will find a fair and caring individual who will do his best to make a fair decision.

Its interesting in the description under From the owner Buncombe county puts emphasis on responsible use of land, basically impying having regulations and restrictions on excessive housing development, which we have so far not largely seen. One wolud think a county with the slogan people to match our mountains would really want to live up to the overall theme and be more responsible about whats left of the limited farmland and forest. This area really needs a stoppage on new housing developments, its making traffic worse on top of the already increasing tourism.

I dont know what the planning department is thinking of, but permits are granted for totally excessive development in this area. For example, on Holbrook Road in Candler there are plans for 153 new housing units; 84 townhouses and 69 single family homes. This development is on a 2 lane country road, which butts up against 2 lane country roads on both ends of Holbrook Road. The only main road for the traffic generated by this this development is Patton Avenue which is already approaching gridlock. Where is all this traffic supposed to go, and what are you folks thinking of?

What Crepto Firebrick said. Buncombe county could learn a thing or two from Monroe county Florida when it comes to impending strict rules for building new homes. For a number of years No one was allowed to build on vacant lots in the Florida Keys. Now its allowed but very restricted and expensive. The same thing needs to happen here to really slow down the excessive growth of the Asheville housing crisis. Everyone cant move to Asheville thats what the new hotels are supposed to be for. The city and county sholud go after the housing developers instead of the hotel builders.
