I started training here after my personal trainer recommended this place for BJJ. Ive found SBG to be a very welcoming place for adults and kids alike. For my son especially whos very shy socially. He opened up the first time I took him and that sealed the deal for me. Training here Ive met people from different walks of life.Every single person Ive rolled with has been very helpful and understanding. Coach Paul should be commended for creating an environment that fosters a sense of family among both staff and students. There is absolutely no judgement and you can come in as a completely newbie without any inhibitions. As they say, every black belt is a white belt that never gave up. And Coach Paul himself says that white belts are the soul of SBG. So if youve been meaning to take a look, then think no further and drop by for a class. I promise youd be pleased with your experience!

Deciding to join SBG Illinois was easily one of the best decisions of my life. Coach Paul Sharp is a top tier coach who teaches not only sport but functional/self defense BJJ along with striking and judo mixed in as well. This, along with the amazing facility at the Endorphin Effect, has really taken my training to the next level. I cannot recommend this facility enough.

My fiancé and i were staying in Illinois our way to Iowa. We planned our trip to stop at SBG Illinois. We aren’t SBG members but attended Spring Camp 2019 in Georgia and we loved the the Tribe & Vibe and the instructors with SBG. So now our vacations and travel plans center around trying to hit an SBG on our trips (got SBG Ireland in the plans for 2020).SBG Illinois did not disappoint! Thanks to our instructor Lou this morning who packed in a lot of knowledge and emphasized all the details! Great gym overall and great mat space! Thanks for letting us drop in!

Paul Sharp, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 1st degree black belt, coached arguably the best session at SBG Camp in Athens Georgia. He showed some self defence details around using simple every day items many of us take for granted like a belt that can be used in conflict situations where defending against an armed assailant with a knife and you are unable to run. He also taught two very efficient takedowns that could be used against anyone. I highly recommend training with Paul if you get the chance!

SBG Illinois is such a great spot. Coach Paul Sharp is one of the most charismatic and knowledgable coaches I have ever come across, and his enthusiasm for teaching makes being in the gym fun and exciting. I would 100% recommend trying a jiu jitsu session with Coach Paul if you thinking about getting into martial arts, or just want a fun way to get in shape.

My husband and I decided to join SBG Illinois as a way to add a comprehensive workout into our wellness journey and to learn the art of Brazilian Juijitsu. This was a huge leap for me, but it’s been an awesome experience these first several months. Coach Paul takes us through the training in a truly “foundational” way. You leave each class better in the art of BJJ, inspired and encouraged. The SBG is also exceptional. I’ve never been someplace where my classmates are as invested in my success as they are their own. I’ve learned so much from senior Tribe members. No matter what level or pace you are learning at, you are striving toward goals and supporting others in their pursuits. Training together has been a blast for me and my husband too, allowing us laugh and work out stress on the mat! Finally, as someone in the non-profit sector, I love how community-minded SBG Illinois is. They rally the Tribe around common causes, give back to the community and encourage people of all abilities to explore the benefits of BJJ. Thank you, SBG Illinois for a great start to what I hope is a long and lasting journey.

I was looking for a gym to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for my job as a Security Guard. My co-worker Bob referred me to his friend Paul’s gym at Straight Blast Gym. So I gave SBG a call in February and spoke to Nikki, Paul’s wife and Co-owner of the gym, and told her that I only had taken 8 classes in Karate about 20 years ago and occasionally wrestled with my brothers while growing up at home, but other than that I was inexperienced with self defense. I wanted to know how long it would take for me to defend myself and others at my job. She assured me I’d be able to defend myself and others with-in 2 months of starting class. That was in February and here I’m I am 5 months later and this place has exceeded my expectations exponentially. Everyone at the gym is amazing! Paul just retired from the Elgin Police Department and has an extensive Martial Arts background centered around Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in which he is a black belt. He also is a great teacher who is always happy to answer any questions. All members of the gym are friendly, easy-going, and also willing to help answer questions. I’m always having fun while I’m there talking and learning with the gym members and I’m always looking forward to the next class. My only regret is that I didn’t get started earlier. I can see myself being part of this gym for a long time!!!

Coach Paul Sharp is one of the most well rounded instructors Ive had the pleasure of training with, in multiple disciplines. SBG Illinois is a great gym, everybody Ive met there has been great. I just started the Foundations Jiu Jitsu program a few weeks ago, the format is fantastic. Instead of the horror stories Ive heard from people starting Jiu Jitsu at other gyms, Paul teaches fundamentals first, which, to me is exactly how any new discipline should be learned. If youre on the fence about starting Jiu Jitsu, come to SBG Illinois theyll get you on the right path.
