I have gone to this school for about 2 years and my experience has been amazing. Both the teachers and students are welcoming and kind. Most classrooms are pretty small, as that is mainly why the school is so good. Reviews say that the small classrooms make it hard to learn to the fullest, but it actually makes it better and easier as you get more attention about personal confusion. Some say that teachers are rude and give too much work, but that is a good thing as it helps you review instead of forgetting. If you dont like to work dont go here, but this school will set you up for life better than most. Mr.Lynch is only strict when he needs to be and is very kind when you are good. You do need to know a certain amount but if you do decide to come here it is a great choice!

I attended The Academy as a student for all of seventh grade and part of eighth. My experience at this school was not pleasant. Headmaster John Lynch was manipulative, abusive, and simply put a bully. On multiple occasions I was picked on and teased by John Lynch in front of the whole class, and as you can imagine this is very embarrassing for a 12 year old boy. I would not recommend sending your child here, especially with all the other amazing options for schooling you have in the area.

Also, I was here a very long time ago and the year I came was the year I left. The classrooms were very small and inappropriate for learning to the fullest.

Last August, after a considerable decision to remove our daughter from a local public school, after just 3 days, we enrolled her at The Elmwood Academy in Berkeley. From the moment we entered the school it had a familiar feels right feeling, it felt secure, child friendly, warm and all about education and fitting of the name ie academic. The stairs were wooden, a little squeaky and well used and the classrooms clean and well organized with dedicated and seasoned teachers, the upper floor class room windows overlooked the bay. Laughter from active and playful yet respectful children was heard from the play ground. One year later we have been surprised by our daughters growth. The kindergarden class size was not 30 children but 7 children and she has had separate french, music, science, PE, and art classes which are not extra-curricular. She has performed on stage in front of the entire school and she entered a science competition. We have learned from her many things including animals, nature and the environment, all from her experiences at this school. We highly recommend this small but dynamic school.
