Waste of money! Remember that even teachers that were working there pulled their kids from that school. The atmosphere might be nice, but the quality of education is mediocre at best. You graduate 6th grade math there and get to a public school for 7th grade, you will be assessed as 5th grader. If you dont believe me, go around and ask!

Our son is in his second year here and is THRIVING. The teachers--and I have met most of them--are all creative, intelligent, loving, devout, and devoted to these students. The administration does an excellent job of communicating with parents. The kids have plenty of after school clubs to participate in if they want to, such as theatre, cross-country, basketball, and other sports. Most of all, our advanced learner is not bored with classes but enjoys learning and has not had a single bad experience with a teacher. And the kids get local restaurant food for lunch 2x week if they would like it. This brings some much needed variety compared to the bag lunch from home. The new building is spacious, clean, and friendly, and its convenient to the major highways around here.

WONDERFUL smaller school with small classes and awesome caring teachers. My daughter has gone to this school since Kindergarten and has been happy there and made wonderful friends. The school is like a family and the parents have a lot of say in the way the school operates for the children. Love it and sad to be leaving this year...on to high school

I cannot rave about this school enough! If you want your child to be educated in an environment where they will thrive, this is the one! The older children help the younger ones and everybody knows everybody. My daughter is in Kindergarten and loves the “book buddy” program. A younger child gets matched up with an older child so they can work on their reading. Mrs Wharton, the director, is as nice as can be. She truly cares about every single child at that school and wants to help you however she can. All of the teachers and staff are very involved in the activities that go on, and they are all wonderful! I just cannot say enough nice things about the staff here!We are going to be moving at the end of this year and have to leave this area. We want to just pick the school up and take it with us! I know how it is trying to find a school, we have moved quite a bit. Sometimes you go to visit a school and you think, okay these people are just putting on a show for us because they want us to sign up. That is not the case at SJNA. When I talk to other people about them, I often describe them as a tight knit family environment. We are going to miss this school and its people so so so so much! My daughter is quite devastated that she has to leave this place where she has thrived and made friends of all ages. Thank you, SJNA, for giving my daughter a solid foundation to build on through the years, and for loving her during her time there.

After just 1 year I decided to pull my kid from this school. They want to be super-strict, but sometimes this alienates the development of the kid. But, the worse thing is the education they receive. My daughter is far behind other kids from public school. They dont teach anything there. Just this year a lot of teachers are leaving because they dont like it either. So, dont send your kids there, if you value your childrens education.

I cant say enough wonderful things about SJNA. I was blessed to teach at this school for two years and was heartbroken to leave for my husbands job. Without a doubt, SJNA is far above and beyond any other school in regards to academics, faith, and the development of each child. Each teacher is dedicated to all of their students and because of the smaller class sizes, the teachers are actually able to give each student the personalized attention they need. Students are challenged each day in their course work, formed in solid values by the priority placed on faith, and become well-rounded people by the fantastic extracurricular opportunities. SJNA is committed to what is truly best for each of their students. There is no better place for children of any age than SJNA. Go Knights!!

This is our daughter’s first year at SJNA and we have been very impressed with the staff and the school. SJNA provides a warm and attentive learning environment for our child. We love the focus on academic excellence, good behavior, and virtues. Small class sizes, first rate facilities, and dedicated teachers mean that our daughter is very happy at the school.

I have two children at SJNA, K and PreK. We absolutely love this school. The teachers and staff are all so wonderful and caring. This is a very close knit school community. Although my oldest is only in Kindergarten, I know the other teachers as well because they all take an interest in all the students. I feel so good knowing that SJNA is providing my daughters with an educational and spiritual foundation that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. When I walk through the doors of SJNA, I just feel like this is where my kids belong, this is where my family belongs. SJNA provides my children with a safe, loving, faith-filled environment and an excellent education!

I taught third grade here for three years and wanted to finally leave a deserved 5-star review. St. John Neumann Academy is not like any other school in the NRV, which in its case is a very good thing. As a result of the small class sizes and the quality of the faculty there is a special level of care and kindness that students experience on a daily basis. I have taught in various schools and SJNA had the strongest approach to character and faith-based development that I have found as a teacher. Academics are strong and challenging, and there are opportunities for students to be pushed beyond their comfort zones. Most of all, there is a sense of community at SJNA that is unique. Students care about one another and show that care daily.I enjoyed teaching there, and contrary to John Ramcoe who left a review stating that teachers were leaving because they dont like it, left because my wife graduated from Virginia Tech and received a job elsewhere. This is true of most teachers, as VT makes the NRV a somewhat transient place. I hope you give SJNA a tour and a chance, and I wish it success in the future!

This school is not what you would expect from a private institution. Ask yourself why they are just few kids in the 4-8 grade. Kids leave when they start understanding the low level of education they receive when it matter the most. Compared to other kids the same age that go to public school, the ones going to SJNA are somewhat behind. Also ask yourself why so many teachers are coming and going, especially for the same grades 4-8. Extracurricular activities are a joke; ask kids that took french for few years and see that they know just one word: bonjour. Most of the teachers are there for just watching kids not educating them.

As a former teacher at SJNA (10 yrs) I can honestly say that this is a stellar institution that cares deeply for the students and their families and provides an exceptional education to all grade levels. I have personally witnessed the hard work the teachers put forth to ensure the curriculum is taught in an engaging and informative way. They work tirelessly on curriculum and how it transitions from grade level to grade level with the development of the students. There are many academic competitions throughout the school year at all grade levels. The sports teams are numerous, including a new swim team this year. The extracurricular classes are fun and educational. In fact, in French, the students not only learn the beginning of a new language they play games, eat French food, celebrate holidays, learn about the culture, and once in 8th grade, students can choose to take one of many languages offered through Virtual Virginia, just like in public school. These upper level language classes are then transferred as high school credits. SJNA teachers hold bachelors and masters degrees from universities all over the country, and are licensed to teach in VA. Check out the Department of Education website and go to License Query. The simplistic and uncomplimentary generalization of the school by the past two reviewers leads me to think they are false reviews which are intended to hurt the school. Neither of the names looks familiar to me and I know the families at the school. It’s not that big. NONE of the teachers that left SJNA this year did so because they “...didn’t like it.” This rollercoaster we call life, can take us on many journeys; teachers have babies, get married, move, travel, go back to school, or choose to be stay-at-home moms and dads like everyone else. Anyone who knows me, or any of the other teachers, knows that we love the school. If I had the chance to go back, I would do so in a heartbeat. Once a Neumann Knight, always a Neumann Knight!

I have 2 children that attend. We could not ask for a better school. The small class sizes allow the teachers and staff to really get to know the students and their needs. When my children have had any struggles with grades, health, or personal issues, the staff have contacted me right away and helped us work through resolutions. Every time I attend a school event I am amazed at the pride that the teachers and staff have in the school and the children. My children have found confidence, learned kindness and other lifelong virtues, and found great friends and families thanks to SJNA.

If I could give less than one star I would. My sons attended this school in prek and 3rd grade this past year (2013-2014. At first they seemed fantastic, but when I couldnt send them back because of personal reasons, they treated my children terribly. To give you an idea on what happened my preschool age son didnt even get a paper when he walked for graduation. I spent hours consoling him. I have spoken to Mrs. Wharton and his prek teacher. None of them have even apologized. My older son was graded on a much harsher scale after they found out we werent coming back and he experienced bullying from both the students and the staff at times. I cant speculate as to what their thoughts were. My oldest son is dyslexic. They had made some learning plan modifications initially, and then just pushed him through the class by the end with no consideration at all. This experience was a nightmare for my family, but Im glad I found out how they really were before I spent another year of tuition and gave them more time to influence my children. Do not make the mistake I did.

I have two sons that went to this school from Kindergarten through 8th grade. They both absolutely LOVED SJNA. I cant say enough about the warm, loving environment and the smart and caring staff. My children received a top notch education (way ahead of the game as they entered public high school) and they spent each day in a Christ centered environment. We have always felt like the faculty, students, and families at SJNA are part of one big family. Best school in the NRV!
