Had the chance to drop in to Broadway Jiu-Jitsu’s No-Gi session on Friday night. The staff and their students were extremely welcoming and friendly and their coaches were professional and technical. Super grateful for the experience. I highly recommend anyone visiting the area to train here!

I was just visiting and went in for a trial class. They were so nice and when I tried to pay the mat fee, they said don’t worry about it since I was a college student and just visiting. They are super accomplished and good fighters! Would highly recommend!

I have been training at this bjj gym for about six months now and I like the atmosphere more than other places I trained at. I think the bjj coach for the white belt class is a cool guy. He is friendly and welcomes questions from his students. I’d rate the gym 7/10. The negatives for me personally is I think people are a little too friendly sometimes. I’d rather be left alone and collect my thoughts after a spare than chat with someone in the gym. That’s just me though, some other guys might like it

Exceptional school. I’ve been doing BJJ for 10+ years and have trained at most schools in Greater Boston, and Broadway ranks as one of my favorites by far. The instructor has high expectations in regards to effort and respect, but does a great job of modeling both. The result is a motivating and focused culture, and a healthy level of competition. He and the rest of the coaches are very professional and kind, and provide excellent instruction. They are doing a wonderful job of running a quality school while respecting the challenges/restrictions related to COVID..

One word: Hooked. Forget about the cool factor of the sport or learning life saving skills (especially as a woman). It still boils down to people and how they treat you from the moment you walk in. The community feel its palpable from the start and comes from the top. You will not be a membership number here. The owner will certainly not treat you like one and neither will any of the coaches. Show up to learn a new sport and you will leave the first week with a new family made.

I joined as a blue belt with roughly 2 years of training, and paid dues to several gyms in the Boston area. While this one ranges on the more pricy side, the unique culture of this gym makes it worth it. Although the gym is located in a basement and there are no fancy amenities, training here tends to be more focused and intense. The students are highly passionate and motivated and dont seem to take time off. If youre looking for something more casual or bougie this probably isnt it.Key advantages:-Competitive yet collegiate atmosphere. They roll much harder here than anywhere else in the area, and many students compete often.-Dog friendly. I can bring my dog here and she is adored.-Expansive mat space.-Leg locks allowed.-Trains stand-up regularly. Offers separate judo classes, and wrestling is frequently integrated.-Students seem to be held to a higher standard-- white belts are exposed to a comprehensive curriculum and must pass a standardized test. Erroneous and nonconducive behaviors (such as complacence, bad technique, stalling, etc) are frequently reprimanded. The students have really good cardio and really scramble.-Tons of students including many high level training partners, several of them women.-Diversity in weight classes, with many members per weight class. I have 0 issues finding people +/- 10 pounds of me.-Flexible class schedule. Several classes per day.-Convenient location, next to the red line.Chief grievances:-Not much lifting equipment (just kettlebells. Meh)-Really expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Had an awesome experience rolling with the locals in Boston. I was a drop in from another school out of state but I was highly impressed by the professionalism and care they took during instructions. If you are considering joining a school definitely check out Broadway. 100%+

I trained at Broadway for the last year and a half that I lived in Boston and cant recommend it highly enough. I started with zero experience in martial arts, and found Broadway to be a welcoming environment with high expectations. If you are on the fence about starting to train, Id encourage you to give it a try. My review reflects my training experience before coronavirus, as I did not train during the pandemic. Broadway is now using an app to ensure class size adheres to state coronavirus guidance.Pros:- Option to attend several classes before signing up for a membership.- Great instructors with a strong focus on technique and safety.- Good mix of beginner and advanced classes. White-belt only classes meet three times a week, with plenty of opportunity to attend more advanced classes once you get more comfortable.- Frequent classes: BJJ classes are available every day of the week, with options for midday and evening classes.- Great training partners. Broadway has a demanding culture, but with a focus on helping training partners improve and keeping one another healthy.- Womens only class once a week. Broadway has a consistent group of female students, which I found helpful for technique and camaraderie.Not-really-cons-just-things-to-keep-in-mind:- Can be difficult to pace yourself as a beginner. Instructors and training partners will encourage you to push yourself and attend all-levels classes ASAP. This is a great fit for some students, but I found I needed to take more time to build up technique and fitness to roll safely. I wasnt particularly athletic when I started training, so I got some minor injuries in the first three months before my body adapted, which I could have avoided by better pacing myself.- If you are a woman youll need to be proactive if you want to roll with men. Instructors generally pair women with other women, which can mean you end up rolling with the same people each week unless you ask otherwise.

I was visiting the Boston area for a medical conference and thought I’d visit one of the local BJJ schools and do some training. John at Broadway Jiu-Jitsu welcomed me for a night of training which consisted of 5 minute rounds for 90 minutes. As an experienced BJJ practitioner, I’ve had a good deal of experience training and Broadway Jiu-Jitsu is legit. I want to thank Derek for the light flow-roll warmup and Steve and Lisa for the hard core training. Steve and Lisa are opposite ends of the spectrum as far as size but both have legit skills. It was great rolling with Lisa. I had always wanted to roll with a high level smaller person and she fit the bill. She had some mad skills. John’s school offers experiences levels from across the spectrum. If you’re looking to train in the Boston area, I high suggest Broadway Jiu-Jitsu.
