Visiting this gym from out of town was awesome! John, the owner was a great human being. He took the time to talk and get to know me. He came across as very caring and humble. He made me feel very comfortable the moment I met him and this seem to rub of on his students as well. Thanks for the roll. I surely be coming back next time am in town.

Where do I start? I cant say enough good things about this gym and Coach Piper.First thing I want to say is Coach Piper/Charlotte JJA are providing world class advanced level JJ and giving their students the tools to be able to compete competitively on an international scale. Coming from Southern California I didnt know if I would get the training I was looking for and thankful that my expectations were easily surpassed. If I moved out to NC I wouldnt have to think twice before joining. How I found this gym. I was on vacation in Charlotte and called a bunch of gyms closer to where I was staying and none of them allowed me to drop in or the times were not working out. When I called Coach Piper mins before a class starting, Piper without hesitation told me to come in and join them. As I arrived I was greeted with such amazing hospitality from Piper and the team which is something that is not common when visiting a gym.I got to have amazing rolls with Piper and the team so much so I wish I had a few more days to come back and train. If youre visiting or looking for a gym to join, make this place your home you wont regret it!Thank you Coach Piper and Charlotte JJA !

I love the community here. The instructors are very knowledgeable about the techniques and sparring strategies. Glad to see that Im not the only female in class as it is usually the case in many schools. There are plenty of ladies in class. Theres a healthy vibe where everyone is cooperative. Im happy to call this place my new BJJ home

I tried my first class here in April of 2019 and instantly fell in love with the sport and the gym. Piper, the head coach, is super welcoming and everyone in the gym is willing to teach and has something different to offer (wrestling backgrounds, judo backgrounds, etc.). CJJA is my home away from home and Ive been training for almost two years now. Super laid back and not affiliated with any teams. Perfect for if you want to visit, compete, or just learn! CJJA offers gi classes, no gi classes, and open mat!

This is the school you are searching for. This is the atmosphere, the training partners, the skill, the conditioning, the people, and most importantly the COACH that you are looking for. I came here a year ago and switching to this gym was (no exaggeration) the best decision of my life. This is where you want to be not only as an athlete, but as a person. Coach John Piper will make you the best version of yourself that you can be, and will make you a part of not just an amazing team, but a family. If youre looking for a gym right now, THIS is the one.

I’m from out of town and looked up some reviews on BJJ gyms to train at and found Charlotte Jiu Jitsu Academy had some great reviews. Well, I was not disappointed. If you live in Charlotte and don’t train here you are really missing out. The instructors are phenomenal. The students are super chill and it’s a great environment to learn and train in. Every time I’m in Charlotte I will be coming here. The classes are organized and I really learned a lot. I cannot say enough positive things about this academy!

I have been training martial arts off & on (mostly on) for 18 years. I received my Jiujitsu purple belt from Shane Briggs (Relson Gracie) 13 years ago, and despite moving around, continue to train Jiujitsu to present day. I also teach kickboxing. Have done so for a decade, cornered 40+ fights, and had a couple fights myself. I did color commentary for 13 mma shows (Fox Sports South), also hosting fight related shows and events. My adult life has been consistently dedicated to martial arts. I moved to Charlotte 6.5 years ago. During these years (and the previous) I met and trained with every decent Jiujitsu instructor in the surrounding areas, including even the original black belts in the area like the late Louis, and Joe Hurst, eventually the next wave of black belts (Hall, Allen, Arel, Jimmo, etc.. all very good.. Sorry for the qualifiers, but it matters haha).Upon first moving to the Queen City, I trained everywhere. I had a lot of connections, and used them. I wanted to find a Jiujitsu gym that was a perfect fit. So after bouncing around, and some periods of time off, I found John Piper and Charlotte Jiujitsu Academy in Sept of 2018. I was recommended to the open mat, which had an incredible 80 people that day. Id never seen anything like it. I continued to come every Saturday. The vibes in the room were amazing. The talent level truly impressive. I’ve literally trained all over the world and never been in a room like that. Quickly I went from just attending open mats to joining John for classes during the week, leaving the gym at which I was currently training. John’s genuine and open personality was infectious and pervasive. It was consistently the highest level training I’d ever had, but the mood was great.. everyone was laughing and having a great time always. John’s teaching was precise and detailed, with no fat. And because he’s an active competitor, he is up to date with the latest on what techniques are working at the highest level. We constantly have mma guys in, ufc fighters (had a former ufc champion just a few weeks ago drop in) as well as top rated IBJJF grappling competitors. And because John is so respected in the scene, he is able to bring in the best Jiujitsu minds to learn from and train with on a regular basis. CJJ is the only gym that ever gave me FOMO haha, as it seemed even on my days off, I’d miss big names passing through. His classes are packed, amd consistently great. I can’t express how amazing training there is, and that’s without being hyperbolic at all. It is truly a hidden gym of Jiujitsu on the east coast. If you have the chance to train here, do it!! The new facility is beautiful. Nice shower and locker room area. Aesthetically beautiful setup, nice equipment. Piper is all class and his business reflects it. I’ll never train anywhere else in Charlotte. This is school is top level by every perceivable measurement.

I trained at CJJA for about a month while finishing some classes for school. Its rare to go to a gym where every person goes out of their to make you feel welcome, but from the moment I walked into the gym, this team was nothing short of friendly. They are very family oriented, like to joke around, and John ensures every student is shown attention while also facilitating creativity with upper belts. Look forward to going to back and training in the near future.

Had the privilege of being in Charlotte on a conference and finding Charlotte BJJ academy. John is an extremely knowledgeable and humble instructor. The most welcome I have ever felt at any academy I have been to. He shares all his experience and knowledge openly and even included me in his academies training for the Charlotte IBJJF Open. I will definitely return to his academy again and if you are in town don’t look any where else but here to get your rolls in.

I’ve been training here for a little over two years now and hitting the mats at CJJA is typically the best part of my day. The facility is bright and well maintained with one of the largest mat spaces in the area. John Piper and his team of instructors have built a Jiu Jitsu curriculum that is both fun and challenging, while providing personal attention to each student. John encourages students to push themselves and their teammates while also insuring that each student is a responsible training partner. Whether you’re a competitor or a hobbyist, CJJA is a place where you will be given the tools and training to continuously improve and refine your game while enjoying a happy, positive team culture. See you on the mats!

In short: this gym is almost ideal for me (save for the fact that I dont actually live in Charlotte). Some of the most inviting and friendly instructors I have seen (Ive been traveling and visiting BJJ schools all over the globe for the last year). No BS type of environment: warmups are just to get warm, no drill sergeant yelling at students, and the students and instructors are very good (most challenging rolls I have had in a while).Details: this gym has a nice big mat space (that they cleaned after every class I have seen), and multiple showers. Midday/morning classes are available. There is enough room to practice standup with quite a few people that have backgrounds in wrestling and judo. Gi and no-gi, and liberal set of techniques allowed (i.e. leg locks).

I love CJJA! As a female purple belt practitioner who has trained with CJJA for about 2 years now (coming in from two gyms previously, in NYC and SC), I couldnt say enough about the awesome training and all around good vibes from the CJJA community. John Piper knows how to train hard in preparation for comp, but he also keeps things fun– his love for the sport is contagious. I most definitely recommend CJJA to both new and seasoned practitioners, male and female alike. :)

I have trained with Professor John Piper for about a year and a half. I didnt start training jiu-jitsu until I was 39 (with no real athletic background) and it was only private sessions once or twice a week. When my instructor left for a great opportunity to train in NY, with world renowned competitors, Charlotte Jiu-jitsu Academy is where he personally placed me to train. Having never been a part of a jiu-jitsu class, it was extremely intimidating. But, Professor Piper nurtures an environment of fun along with hard work and discipline. As far as training partners go, weve got whatever you want...movers, smashers, young, not as young and all sizes, shapes & game styles. Beginners and seasoned practitioners train here. There are also several females that train here regularly (even a purple belt..yay Becca!).The upper belts that train here are amazing, very, very helpful and encouraging! Please come & train! Bring a friend, or two!!! Ladies...come and see just how strong you are!!!
