I joined Dick Harrell Martial Arts a little over a month ago and I LOVE IT! I have trained elsewhere for 4 years and due to an injury I had to take off for over a year. Its not easy getting back into the swing of things after being gone but everyone was so friendly and welcoming! Whether you are a beginner or advanced you will have a great workout and feel very comfortable. Dick has over 40 years experience in many types of Martial Arts and is extremely knowledgeable, patient, and kind. I highly recommend DHMA and I will be there for years to come. :)

I am a new student with DHMA. Everyone has been amazing at helping me jump right into what the rest of the class is working on. They have made me feel comfortable with my level and explaining not only what to do, but why. Could not recommend them highly enough.

Ive trained martial arts for several years at schools all around the country. DHMA is one of the best there is for several reasons: The highest quality instruction in a variety of different but complimentary arts, a good mix of student experience level, and a welcoming atmosphere. What a great school with authenticity. The instruction is best in class, and the school places a great deal of emphasis on both respect and humility. I’ve trained from Boston down to Charlotte, and I credit this school for reviving my love of Muay Thai. 4 years and going strong here

DHMA is an incredible martial arts school. I’ve been in martial arts for years and I can truthfully say the knowledge of Sifu Harrell is amazing. His teaching style enables even those with little or no experience to catch on quickly. The camaraderie of the students and teachers is awesome. You won’t find a better school.

DHMA is a great place to learn martial arts and meet good people. I always got a lot more than the effort I put in and its rewarding. Theres always new concepts and techniques to learn and improve on. Everyone there is willing to help each other grow and learn. My favorite arts there are Muay Thai, JKD, and Filipino Martial arts and its been able to broaden my sense of timing and awareness. The seminars that are held there, are always cuturally rich, effective, and taught by world-famous martial artists and national fighters.

Best place to learn and practice martial arts in CHARLOTTE, NC for man and women alike. The environment in this school is respectful, friendly and encouraging, which was important for me as a woman. The owner/instructor Ajarn/Sifu Dick Harrel is a dedicated, skilled and passionate yet humble martial artist as well as a talented and gifted teacher with decades of experience. His abundant knowledge in Muy Thai, Filipino Arts (Escrima, Kali), JKD and various other self-defense techniques and systems is amazing. This school is for beginners as well as seasoned martial artists with a welcoming environment where everybody helps and encourages each other. I am very happy and thankful that I found this school years ago, which helps and challenges me to stay physically and mentally fit while having fun and a good time with friends, who are like family. The best group of people to be with.

Training with Dick Harrell, often reminds me of the deeply philosophical, highly-skilled yet humble teacher, Mr. Miyagi, in he 1984 film The Karate Kid. While not initially realizing the value of the exercises he has been doing, Miyagis student Daniel suddenly awakens to the fact that he has gained some strong fighting skills.Despite previously studying many of the arts taught at DHMA (JKD, Muay Thai, Escrima), I feel like I am finally starting to understand how all the arts are related-- rather than just repeating techniques. This is a fundamental advantage of studying at DHMA and it is emphasized in Dicks teaching style. Dick is a living example of Bruce Lees philosophy of absorb what is useful. As for the classes, DHMA attracts very down to earth students who are looking to improve themselves--and their training partners. Camaraderie amongst the students is the best Ive experienced amongst the 15+ schools I have trained at over the years. You wont ever hear any dogmatic arguments at the school about any one style being superior or anyone bragging about getting their rank from so-and-so black belt. So, if you are looking to get in great shape, improve your fighting skills--and make some new friends-- then try DHMA.P.S. Feeling is believing, so be sure to get on the mat and feel some of the techniques. I used to think that some of the throws or takedowns required a compliant partner to work... Boy was I wrong! After being on the receiving end of some of Guro Dicks techniques, I realized just how quickly you hit the ground when he takes your balance.
