Ive taken workshops at a few different places in Chicago: the Writers Loft, StoryStudio, and The Writers Studio at the U of Chicago Graham School. While I enjoyed the Writers Studio a lot (was NOT a fan of the Writers Loft at all), StoryStudio has consistently been my favorite.Ive taken a handful of classes at StoryStudio, ranging from 4-8 weeks. The instructors have all been knowledgeable and helpful, offering good feedback and a strong selection of readings to pair with each lesson. The studio itself is cozy: everyones friendly, theres tea and coffee, places to hang your coats, etc. Ive never had a disappointing experience at StoryStudio. Even better, the price has been cheaper than the aforementioned locations.
I am taking my first writing class here and absolutely love it! The instructor Steve is always prepared and is great at starting and leading class discussions. I feel inspired to write after every class.
Im currently taking my second class at StoryStudio, and I love it. Its a total departure from the traditional classroom setting. Its casual and no-pressure. Everyone on staff is friendly and helpful, and my teacher Jack Helbig rocks (Ive heard great things about the other teachers, too). I was nervous about re-entering the workshop realm after torturous college experiences, but the StoryStudio atmosphere put me right at ease. Looking forward to taking more classes in the future!
Since April 2014, Ive taken 4 classes here. Loved them all and the instructors and staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Love it!
When I finally decided to pursue a career in writing, I signed up for classes at the Story Studio. Not only do they have wonderful instructors who teach craft, they offer classes that build your business as a writer/author. I needed a balance of both, business & skill building, which is provided under one cozy roof. And, the classes are affordable. I paid $200 more at the University of Chicago for the SAME instructor at StoryStudio. I have a picture book coming out on Skyhorse Press, Fall/2015 & am self-publishing my Adult work because I want to be a hybrid writer/publisher. StoryStudio provided the knowledge and support needed to take my career to the next level. I highly recommend! Also, easy location and lots of parking (cant forget about that!)
