Formada Colibri is so intentional in the way she teaches her students. I feel lucky to be able to attend her classes and workshops. Even during COVID she has thoughtful about keeping every one of her students safe.

Capoeira is where I come to meet with my soul.I am able to connect to something deep inside me that I have not experienced anywhere else. The energy of everyone there is beautiful and when we all get together to play, the energy can be felt physically. I am exhausted after class, but so PUMPED. Its like I just came alive!I love it. Ive never loved a martial art as much as I love Capoeira. So glad to have found where I belong.

I went to the Japanese Cultural Center (their previous location) in 2014 to take free trial class from Grupo Capoeira Brasil. Not knowing what to expect, they quickly welcomed me to the group and got me working up a sweat almost instantly.I came into the class with some martial arts experience, which really helped when it came down to footwork, kicking, and coordination; however, I began to learn techniques that helped me understand my bodys capabilities that I couldnt really have developed in other forms of martial arts. Who knew that I would thank my younger self for taking the time to learn how to cartwheel! And even if youre one of those individuals who hasnt taken a day of Capoeira class in their life, I highly recommend you come in for a class just to try it out.My first class was FREE!Classes are always filled with friendly faces that will take care of you and provide you with a safe learning environment. They are located on the second floor, equiped with clean hardwood floors and changing rooms. Just dont forget to take off your shoes before you enter. :-)There is plenty of street parking in a very peaceful neighborhood.Formada Colibri is the master over there and you can just tell that she is just so passionate about all aspects of Capoeira. She works very well with beginners, and you will never feel left out of the class for being a novice. She is also constantly challenging her students to become better at Capoeira during every class, and you will never forget how amazing she is when you first see her play Capoeira.Class sizes range from a personable size where the instructor can work with you and the other students one on one to a room packed with capoeiristas filling the center with crazy energy!Capoeira is a great form of exercise that will make you leave the class feeling relieved and thankful that you got up, took a chance, and spent an hour and a half working practically every muscle in your body. They offer kids and adult classes. They also have music classes where you can start learning Portuguese. One of the best things about Capoeira is that you dont need to bring anything to class! (well, maybe a water bottle because you need to stay hydrated!) They provide the music and floor mats. All you have to do is show up, have an open mind, and willingness to learn.

I have been doing capoeira with this group for seven months. If you stick with it, you will be amazed at the things you can learn/do. I would say the thing that distinguishes capoeira from other exercise routines, is that it is about making the group, not so much the individual, stronger. Colibri elevates her advanced students to be teachers and works closely with everyone. This means that as a student you get many perspectives and different forms of feedback. It is a warm group of people and really, really fun. The only criticism is that you might get addicted and neglect your other responsibilities.

I started capoeira because I was looking for a unique way to stay fit. Regular fitness classes at gyms didnt really cut it for me and I thought it would be kinda cool to learn some martial arts. After a few classes here, I was hooked. Capoeira is unlike any other martial art because it combines with dance and some acrobatics, so it takes a lot of practice and patience. You definitely wont master the movements right away, and thats what keeps me coming back. I love the challenge. I love how each time I leave class, Im anxious to learn more. The teacher, Formada Colibri, is an excellent instructor who sees each student as an individual and recognizes where they are in their capoeira journey. If you have some capoeira experience or NO experience, this is a great place to check out. Highly recommended.

Colibri is an amazing teacher. Rarely will you find an instructor with such a depth of experience and knowledge. She does an amazing job balancing exercise, fun and respect for the roots and practice of capoeira. Colibri is particularly adapt at making sure that beginners fundamentals are solid, but also does a great job teaching more advanced students (as a beginner, I dont get as much first hand experience with this). Colibris groups are mixed with beginner and advanced students but high, positive energy is consistent throughout the group. Definitely the best place to train capoeira in Chicago!

Chicago Capoeira Center is a great place to train capoeira, make friends, and immerse yourself in Brazilian culture. Classes include capoeira, music (Brazilian percussion), language (Brazilian Portuguese), and yoga, which are held throughout the week and on weekends. The space is a clean loft with wood floors and large windows, where the El runs right outside, giving this space a true Chicago feel. I cant speak highly enough about the teacher. Colibri is an amazing capoerista who shares her knowledge and love of the art with her students. She understands the intricacies of the game and works closely with her students to further develop their skills. Her classes are fun and full of energy - be prepared to sweat! Students are welcoming and supportive, and classes are always an enjoyable experience. Chicago Capoeira Center is the space for capoeira in Chicago and the heart of Brazil in the Windy City. I have been training with Grupo Capoeira Brasil Chicago for the past few years, and truly enjoy training at this location.
