This is a lovely church near downtown with convenient and free parking. It has the feel of the old school beautiful churches with gorgeous art and attention to details. Everything in the church is impressive and it’s peaceful to pray. It’s especially convenient that the sacraments are offered very frequently here and that the priests are faithful and helpful in confession.God bless this parish and community.

We could not be more THRILLED with SMA. They truly put kids 1st. Even on snowy days the school felt education comes 1st and made hard choices to be open when few were brave enough to do so. I have other kindergarten parent friends at fancy schools and they always sound nice but many of them come out not even knowing how to read. SMA knows what is really important the results prove it!

Teachers are second to none. Extremely driven personable. Of note,THIS SCHOOL IS ON ITS WAY TO BEING A BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL. Test scores are awesome and the teachers ensure each student is learning, every day. Class sizes are perfect. Not tiny and not huge like public schools. So many welcoming families and the environment is amazing :) like a second home to this mom, who has moved many times since the birth of my children. Principal is very attentive and involved. Every staff member knows my children. Amazing environment.

So we have had 2 Baptisms here and its a beautiful Catholic church inside, they have been renovating the exterior of the building for some time. The stain glass work was remarkable and the marble is in really good shape for the age of the church. The could update the restrooms a bit,but still very nice. The Baptism took place after service and they must had held some programs for pets & owners because we seen many people outside with dogs and one thing I didnt like was they were allowing the pets to go on property and many didnt clean up after them which I thought was very disrespectful. This is still a wonderful church for mass in English& Spanish and look forward to next events.

Came to a Quinceanera ( fifteen birthday celebration) and the mass was very nice. The church looks great from outside as well as for inside. It was also nice to take pictures in front of the church since it has very large pillars. There are two angels as you come in the church and you feel welcomed. Many nice paintings all around and statues.

Beautiful church, architecture is iconic. Great location, great service, great clergy. I wanted to see it because of how it was described in a book Id read. I showed up, and waited for a wedding that was wrapping up. Parking lot was small, but it was easy to stay out of the way. Nobody minded me unobtrusively taking pictures of the angels outside, or the magnificent interior, that had apparently just gotten some renovations. The exterior was under construction at the time, restoring some of the buttresses.

Horrible experience today receiving Holy Communion. The main reason I go to this church (apart from the architecture, good preaching, good music and prayerful ambiance) is to receive Our Lord kneeling and on the tongue from a priest. St. Marys offers this as an option for those wishing to receive this way - and I have been receiving this way at every Mass I have attended there for the past year. But today for some reason they had the priest go distribute Holy Communion in the aisle standing while they had the deacon, yes you heard right, the DEACON distribute at the altar rail as if he were a priest! I should have just not received Holy Communion at all! I mean, why even bother offering the more traditional option if they are just going to play games with us in this way?I have been thoroughly scandalized by this ordeal. If this was premeditated on the part of the priests, then they have been acting nothing like priests but blood-sucking monsters. Consider my membership in this parish (and the financial support offered) liquidated. It is only a shame I cant get all of the money I have donated back. Not another dime from me for this place!

By no means do I want to sound judgmental of those who wrote them but being a member of the catholic church does not solely involve attending mass and sacraments.... you must understand what every aspect of mass means and learn at-least why it is that way . that would take away one negative review. lastly 1st communion is such a joyous and over-welling time for the church....they do everything in their powers to please everyone and this is where patients and understand is needed..in the future approach the people in charge if you do not understand something.. it is a lot better then ranting on the internet about a Catholic Church

I graduated from here in 2006. It was the best grade school I had ever been to as the teachers were dedicated, and cared for all of their students. I was a class clown who had just transferred due to disciplinary reasons, and the principal, Mr. Arcardi met with me and really had an effect on me. I was still a class clown but he help me focus more and helped me get the best out of my potential. The most patient and caring teacher of all was Mr. Gaulick, God bless hi soul. He hated me, but still loved me as his own. The curriculum prepared me to go to De La Salle Institute. This is a great school. The most grade schools I had attended were racist and segregated because the student werent being properly guided by their parents. NONE OF THAT IS HERE. The parents are involved, and this a very multicultural school, and they are united by Christian values. I can go on and on about this school. Good memories.

Contrary to what the “school official” states in his opening diatribe on Great Schools, there is not just one disgruntled parent, there are many disgruntled parents, many who have left the school, and many who have stayed but are prevented from voicing their views for fear of having their children expelled because of the totalitarian Maryland Charter that every family is forced to sign at the beginning of the school year. If this is not enough to distract you from ever considering this school, then also consider the following:1) THE INNOCENT WILL CONTINUE TO SUFFER: The Maryland Charter prevents disruptive students and bullying being dealt with in an appropriate manner. The emphasis is on endlessly working with the problem students to no end.2) DIFFERENTIATION OF MISEDUCATION: The Maryland Charter also states that your bright child will spend their extra time helping the lagging students to catch up, when this is really the job of the teacher. Any accomplished education professional will say that this “idea” is crazy! In addition, your bright child will not get any enrichment activities that allow them to jump ahead once they have mastered a topic.3) FREE STUFF FOR EVERYONE: In their misguided notion of how to run a successful school, the administration has chosen to hand out scholarships in such a manner that these students represent a disproportionate percentage of the total student population. These students tend to be lagging academically and are more likely to cause trouble in school. In other words, the students who perform well and do not cause trouble continue to suffer. P.S. The school is also not financially sound because of all the scholarship students and is in a continuous fund raising mode for everything. All the above should cause you to look elsewhere for a school for your child.

I was looking to take a break from our normal suburban parish and bring my 5 kids to a beautiful Catholic Church in Chicago. I see that St. Marys does not allow girls to be altar servers. Weve been at SMA for the past three years. My first impression from my initial tour as a prospective parent is the same as I have today; from the moment you walk in the door, you are greeted by children who are kind and respectful. They open doors and say hello or good morning without being prompted. This happens to be part of the SMA core values that you can see are taken seriously. Our daughter has grown socially, academically and spiritually with the support of the dedicated teachers at SMA. As a parent, I always feel like my questions are taken seriously and attended to promptly by the teachers, principal and support staff. The class sizes are small compared to CPS and therefore the teacher can spend more time with each individual student. Weve made amazing family friends that we know will be in our lives for years to come; its a welcoming community that we are happy to have joined.

One of most beautiful Catholic churches in Chicago, or anywhere for that matter. The priests of Opus Dei are straightforwardly Catholic. I only wish they offered the Traditional Latin Mass here. The founder of Opus Dei, Jose Maria Escriva de Belaguer, NEVER offered the Novus Ordo Mass of Pope Paul VI. He only offered the Traditional Latin Mass. But apparently thats not good enough for the Opus Dei of today. Why not? Nevertheless, I recommend this church. There is a last chance Sunday Mass for those who prefer to sleep in and/or do work, or shop on holy Sundays. Im not saying that everyone who attends this late Sunday Mass is in this category. But lets remember that Sundays are the Lords Day, and one of the 10 Commandments is Keep holy the Lords Day. This means that we are to especially sanctify Sunday, - the whole day, by focusing on our Blessed Lord and not to use it as simply a free day to do work at home, or things that take our focus off of our relationship with the Lord and with loved ones and friends. Certainly the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy would be excellent activities for Sundays. AMDG - Ad majorem Dei gloriam - For the greater glory of God.

It seems crazy that over six years ago we were in your shoes trying to find the best school for our precious 3 year old. At the time, we were looking for a warm and safe environment where the teachers seemed loving and caring. With that said, we knew long term even more important than that was the educational growth of our child so that she would be prepared for the next level. Walking in to SMA and seeing the close culture of the families, the teachers, and the children made it an easy decision for pre-school. What we came to learn after being at the school for only one year is that Ms Dolack and the teachers have a plan in place to make certain that the children are not only growing spiritually but academically. Fast forward to 4th (and 1st for child #2) grade, and we are very happy with our child’s test results and strides in learning math, reading, spelling, etc. We could not be happier to be an SMA family knowing our children will be so well prepared for their future!!!-Current Parent (1st Grade & 4th Grade)

After living in Bucktown for nearly 15 years, I know there is no better place than SMA to send my children. From the dynamic, engaged preschool program all the way up to the rigorous, active-learning environments of middle and upper school classes, SMA is the best place to know that my children are developing academically, socially, and spiritually. We wanted a school that would welcome our children, not as just another number or test score, but really embrace them. Thankfully we found what we were looking for right in our own neighborhood. From the staff to the teachers to the administrators to the community of parents, SMA is a special place.

We have 4 children and they feel SMA as their 2nd home, they love going to school, they love their teachers and their friends.SMA is the best option for a Catholic education. Children have the opportunity to go to Mass every Friday and to go to Confession every week if needed. The values taught from the Principal, Priests and teachers are according to the Catholic Church teachings, and they really care for each student as a whole person. My children participate in the annual play, community service, sports club, basketball, and volleyball. SMA also has a wonderful coding and Spanish/Latin program where the students are preparing well for High School. If you are looking for a Catholic education with a great academic level, and a wonderful community... I love everything about St. Mary of the Angels. The most beautiful and powerful Sacrifice of the Mass I ever attended is always happening here.Everything is beautiful: the Church, the music, beautiful singing especially on 11am Sunday Mass, the Sacrifice of the Mass is very traditional, without modern inventions..Homilies are very powerfull, inspiring and provoking to be Catholic as God wants us to be.Not as in so many Churches, where so much personal agenda is preached. In St. Mary pure Catholic doctrine is preach in the pure Catholic way.Mass is very beautiful and inspiring in so many ways, that everyone will find something gratifying and elevating life into more beautiful and better place.I recommend St. of the Angels for young children because they can experience the most inspiring and beautiful presence of the God.I recommend St. Mary of the Angels for young people, married, older and everyone else because of very powerfull message that is preach during homilies. True Catholic doctrine, that is not only the most beautiful and powerful but also the most pragmatic model of living in God created world. The greatest shield against all the indoctrination and autodestruction promoted by modern culture .Also there is opportunity to make confession before every mass, few priests present in confessionals. For those who want have communion kneeling it is also possible. Only priests serve communion. Everything is happening perfect way.I drive around an hour from the suburbs to participate and it is highlight of the week.I really wish to live closer and work closer to be able to pray at St Mary every day.St.Mary of the Angels is another great gift from God for any Catholic.I wish to discover that Church ealier.God bless every one that made it happened!
