Southwestern College strives to make the student experience worth the time and effort and expense. Ken Yanow is my colleague in the geographic information systems program and he is innovative, caring, kind, and one of the finest educators I’ve ever known. The campus is beautiful and accessible and I fee that if you pursue your education here you will be very glad that you did. You will be empowered to make the world a better place with the perspectives and skills that you gain.

This is a great Community College! They let me take some music classes here when I was in 12th grade at Bonita Vista High School. When I went to a 4-year College, I took dance classes in the summers, & they were very fun. Also, my father taught here for 29 years. He rarely called in sick, so he had enough sick days to cover him for at least half of the school year that wouldve been his 30th. He wasnt able to return to teaching because of his cancer, but they counted his 30th year as complete anyway. Our family was very grateful that they did that in his honor and, -- for us. Its a great college!

The campus is really nice. Very big, lots of grass. The new football field and facilities are killer. Solar panels, everything. I went here years back and always loved the campus. Had some great profs. Some not so great, but most of them were very good, cool people that wanted you to learn. They have a multi million dollar recording engineering studio if youre into that. Gardens, Auto Tech. And the library is awesome!

Given the fact that I have been here in this main campus for a year, I think I can give a longer than usual review but this might be helpful to you.The campus itself is an amazing place compared to other community colleges in this county of San Diego, where you have the same opportunities if the major you want to pick is the same in any other college in the region, even including the 4 years. As well it now has a new online college catalog where you can find a lot of information on many degrees and certificates; since there are some hidden gems that are just A.S. degrees, but you can easily make 50k+ if you complete certain degrees and make connections with the employers that come here in this campus in certain dates, so you definitely can get an intership even if youre in this college, since contrary to the popular belief that you cant get internships in a community college, you actually can depending on your degree and how useful it is.Moving to another point, there are a handful of counselors that are pretty great, but it is YOUR OWN RESPONSIBILITY to really be motivated and be sure of yourself on what you want to study, since some people probably will give one star to this school because of this and are just another useless review. And many of the reviews here are basically obsolete, especially the ones older than 2 years, mainly because the staff is always changing and never stays the same.

Lets see, where do I begin. Their website is horribly made which results in random crashes, constant lagging, and a suffers from a low level of functionality. I think they went to the cheapest people they could to put in their IT department (if they even have one). Everyone that works there makes it seem like its an inconvenience to get any help from them. Im a disabled combat veteran and have not been able to get my financial aid this semester. Every time I have gone to the financial aid department they cant even give me a clear answer as to when I will receive my disbursement. They just say Oh it should be there sometime this week.I understand this is a public school but hire some people that actually want to help the students instead of giving them the run around. I rely heavily on my financial aid and can not even get any type of direct help as to when I will get it. My financial aid has been awarded and when I log in, it says I am going to receive my initial disbursement in September. Its now 3 days away from the end of the month and I have yet to hear ANYTHING as to when I will receive it. Luckily the teachers there are willing to work with me.The VA dept waits until the first week of school to submit for your GI Bill benefits. The only reason I can think of for this is they are just LAZY. What other explanation could there be for this? It takes up to 4 weeks for the VA to process GI Bill benefits after theyve been requested by the school. LUCKILY for me, I was able to talk to a VA case manager who was able to manually review my file and approve the request so I could get paid in a timely manner.Hopefully I will only have to deal with this for one more semester. If I cant get transferred to a state college after this school year, I will just go back to a private school. Being a public school is no excuse for its failures. I went to a public school in L.A. and had no problems like this.Unfortunately this review will fall on deaf ears and the school will continue to operate the way it does. So good luck to all future students of this school.

Trying to get an appt with a counselor is a joke. I mostly attend classes at the SY campus and the woman at the front desk is the MOST unhelpful person I have ever met in my life. How is this terrible woman still employed by this school?!?! Her personality is awful and she truly seems to enjoy telling people some version of no when they approach her for help. Pretty sure her name is Nancy. For the past 2 years, EVERY TIME I have approached the front desk I have had to deal with her. She is always immediately annoyed when someone approaches and I swear to God she actually sighed in irritation when I asked to see a counselor. She seems very bitter towards students and she truly goes out of her way to make your experience unpleasant if you ever need student services at the San Ysidro campus.

Great experience! Not only is it affordable, they give you all the tools necessary to succeed. Although some of the counselors pushed me towards a certificate, the professors really encouraged me to apply to a 4 year university. The small classrooms also give you the opportunity to talk to your professors and get to know your classmates. I am very grateful for having the opportunity to meet and learn from Prof. Hayashi, Prof. Jimenez, and Prof. Guaracha.

I believe that a school graduation is a time to celebrate your achievements in school not a time to push your campuses political agenda. Your schools graduation turned into one giant democratic political rally and you did absolutely nothing to stop it. I left early because of how bad it was getting. I just cant support a school who allows its students to incite violence at a graduation.

This institution is very racist both in the faculty and student body. They fail to properly address the issues and are only there to support whoever they deem important. They cover up a lot and only think a public apology is okay. ASO is racist, Administration is racist, there have been too many accounts of racism and negligence they have made an instagram using black face and other racial slurs just to win an election. They have been nothing good for the minority and do any and everything in their powed to justify the injustices.

Huge improvements have been happening at Southwestern College (SWC) over the past two years, but positive change takes hard work and time. SWCs future is bright. The Main Campus has been discussed so much in these reviews that I will talk about the 3 Higher Education Centers (HEC).HEC National City has an excellent dental hygienist program that is affordable. HEC Otay Mesa has a Nursing Program, and the Fire, Paramedic, & Police Academies. HEC San Ysidro a small vibrant campus where amazing education happens. The students, faculty, and staff at all three HEC locations are outstanding and I highly recommend them. Tip: if you cant get into a class at the main campus, try looking for the class at the HECs; they tend to have more open seats for general education classes.

Got many counselors to talk to and help me plan all my credits and semesters to get to the university I want to get to. All teachers are helpful and understanding with my disabilities as well. I suggest FYE or EOPS if you can, they give book service and quick appointments with counselors. If you have both then FYE wont give you book service, even though they gave my friend both and when he asked them (since I mentioned they only gave me one) they said that we are suppose to receive both but when I asked they said the opposite.

I am a veteran and moved to California from Virginia Beach. My wife is still active duty and got stationed here in San Diego. I had previously received an associates degree from Tidewater Community College just before I got here in San Diego. I applied to SDSU and UCSD and was told I needed a few extra classes in order to transfer to those schools. So I thought ok no problem. Ill just go to Southwestern College (closest CC to me) and get these few classes (two physics classes to be exact). Boy was I wrong.I had my transcripts reviewed. The admissions department checked my degree against the wrong degree. So naturally none of my major courses transferred over. Once I pushed hard enough to find out why this happened I was told to petition the Dean of the Math department to Substitute Major Requirements with the courses I had from TCC. The Dean promptly told me that was not his job.At this point the Dean of admissions got involved and seemingly all was well. Again, boy was I wrong! The Dean of the Math Department changed his mind and agreed it was his job to review my courses and substituted my previous courses for the ones required by SWC. In congruence, I was never showed or told which classes were accepted by admissions from TCC.Fast forward one semester. I decided to change my major and therefore met with a counselor. During our meeting she printed out my transcript from SWC. At the time I didnt notice but later that night I was reviewing the paperwork given to me by the counselor in order to determine which classes I would enroll in for Spring 2017. Apparently half of my courses from TCC didnt match perfectly with their courses and therefore were not accepted. Not only that but the courses that were approved by the Dean of the Math department we still not listed on my transcript. 6+ months had past! Why werent they listed yet?!With minimal effort from myself I was able to match ALL, let me say that again. With MINIMAL EFFORT I was able to match (almost perfectly) all my courses to ones in the SWC course catalog.None of my classes are currently accepted by SWC. I have completed every step they have provided me with to absolve this problem but none have worked and I am still on square one. In fact I have emailed everyone from counselors to the Vice President of the school and have still not received a response.PLEASE I EMPLORE YOU DO NOT ATTEND THIS SCHOOL IF TRANSFERRING FROM OUT OF STATE!!

The Counselors are more like dictators of your education...they try to make you do what they say you should do even though you tell them clearly that you want to do this..My advice is once youve claimed your major, just go by the catalog...You want to know what classes to take to tranfer? Look at the Assist website...Youre better off on your own in this school and Leaving ASAP....One other thing that ticks me off are the stupid Fees.....like the health fee...HOW MANY PEOPLE ACTUALLY GO IN TO THE NURSES OFFICE?!?!? WHY PAY FOR A FEE WE DONT EVEN USE!?!?!

I Give this school a 3/5 for AVERAGE. they get this mark barely.Parking services are bullshit no doubt. They make you buy a parking pass for the school but if you have school at multiple SWC campuses you need multiple parking passes for each lot smh.I am also a veteran. While my G.I. Bill was processed quickly I was denied early registration. Apparently its canceled for veterans. Review №48

Let me say these Southwestern College has improved over the years, but as a alumni I have to say the services rendered in SWC and especially financial aid its very bureaucratic process in every sense. Financial Aid is the worst in the services as far as bereaucracy is concern first of all it takes weeks for fininacial aid in swc to reward you any type of financial aid especially if you decided to drop a class or add a class or vice versa. For applying it takes weeks too, Counseling service is second to worst for helping students you have to make an appointment a week before to see a counselor and if you have an emergency or cant make the apppoint and need to resechedule good luck in getting an appointment you will have to wait at least two weeks if your lucky enough. I can go on and on with services that I see that needs a vast improvement over the years I have been in SWC. Second area that I see SWC fails to students is the instructors, the instructors, professors, teachers whatever you wanna call them most of them are adjunct instructors; why you say its a concern or bad? The reason is that everytime you want to see a adjunct instructor outside class he or she cant because he/she doesnt have an office therefore if you have questions on campus or need to see the instructor asap you cant only because its a adjunct and they are considered part time instructors. Let me tell you in my experience in SWC there are A LOT of adjunct instructors. Thirdly like I said from the beggining the staff, governing board, and office leaders have improved a lot because since Chopra ruling as superindent there was construction bribes, budget cuts, classes cuts, protests, and corrupted staff who did everyhting chopra asked so yeah ever since than there is more transparacy, fairness, and less power abuse, but on Spring 2013 I see a lot classes cuts and props to fund schools have been aproved SO I DONT KNOW WHY THERE IS STILL CLASSES CUT DRAMATICALLY!Overall I would say SWC is fair only because it has improved from the horrible state it was that it almost lost its accrediation just because the lack of leadership and corrupted the governing board, staff, and leaders who made decisions that effected, instructors, employees, and students. So because of the state it was before and now is a major improvemnt and I would say SWC is a fair school, but beware if your expecting not to have buereacracy, and have good quality instructors, and a overall good community college these is not for you. There are better community colleges out there such as cuyamaca, grossmont, city, mesa, miramar and other ones to look forward. On a side note 90% of the students are mexicans from Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico lacks diversity.

The counseling office is the worst you cant make appointments right away for continuing students you have to wait two weeks before semester starts and it takes a week to make an appointment just sucks. ALSO STUDENT EMPLOYMENT SERVICES DOESNT CHECK INTEGRITY FOR EMPLOYERS THEY JUST POST JOBS WITHOUT KNOWING IF THEY ARE LEGIt OR IF THEY ARE STILL HIRING. DISTRICT WORK STUDY JOBS ARE NOT UPDATED YOU CAN SEARCH FOR A JOB AND IS ALREADY TAKEN AS FAR AS YOU CAN TELL. THESE SCHOOL SUCKS ANOTHER Tijuana SCHOOL FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN TJ AND MEXICO.
