These guys are great! Love to rock, love to teach, and really love what they do. I definitely recommend them for kids wanting to learn how to play in a band! And, under the current circumstances of social distancing, their studios are large enough to accommodate a 6ft distance between student and teacher. They have a good setup and it feels safe.

We wanted a FUN way for our son to get into music (I did several years of piano, and the mandated practice sessions often felt like chores). After looking at several options, we settled on SoundCheck. From the owner to the instructors, everyone is genuinely excited about music (most are professional musicians in addition to teaching), and they manage to get the most from the kids.The curriculum is focused on playing the instrument, so the students get immediate gratification as they play along with familiar songs. In the process, they’re also learning age-appropriate music theory without even realizing it.The individual lessons are great, but the real magic happens in the band program. They learn lessons about teamwork, supporting each other, and getting out of their comfort zone – important stuff, especially during those challenging pre-teen and teen years.As a side note, Ive been impressed with the schools response to the COVID-19 crisis. They offer online lessons, which work really well, and for those who want to come to the school for in-person lessons and rehearsals, they have a rigorous program to ensure that everyone is as safe as possible.Highly recommended as both a creative and social outlet.

Our son was ecstatic from the tour alone to start lessons! We love that they combine private lessons while also giving the kids the opportunity and encouragement to practice what they learn with a band! The bands are kids in their own age group and they also have them perform at real venues in the area! We’re so excited that this place exists and really facilities the kids to get excited and stay passionate about music :)

Our son started out with a few of their summer camp weekly programs, and then started with a band/lessons a couple of years back. The instructors are first-rate, and they are truly committed to each students musical growth. Im constantly amazed by how good these kid bands sound with just a few weeks of rehearsal---and a lot of behind the scenes efforts by the school staff to get venues lined up, sound equipment working, etc. The ability to perform real shows at fun venues (M3, Ellicott City Main Street, etc.)---and the friendships forged among bandmates and parents alike---truly makes Soundcheck a wonderful experience.

My son has taken lessons, attended summer camps and played in the rock band programs at SoundCheck. A great school and a great environment to learn music. Besides Playing guitar, singing and Drumming , my son has learned self confidence, how to perform in front of a crowd and the kinship one achieves when making music with others.

I’ve taken lessons for 3-4 years now and I can’t imagine stopping! I’ve learned so much from Kipyn and the whole staff and other teachers are all super supportive and friendly. They’re amazing with all ages, from Kids to adults :)

Greatest music school ever

The Columbia Rock School has exceeded my expectations! My boys (8 and 9) started taking lessons and quickly fell in love. They were placed in a real band and are playing songs they love. Their band is performing on Main Street in Ellicott City and at the M3 Rock Festival at Merriweather Post this Spring. Our whole family loves to watch and support them. They ask to practice all the time! I saw them having so much fun and when the Rock School opened an adult band, I also joined! Im having a blast. I highly recommend the school.Update - 12/20My boys are 2 years older and their musical progress is crazy. Theyve kept up with their lessons virtually and with safe in-person practices. Theyve also had an activity that occupies them at home WITHOUT a screen. Both boys are learning songs on their own and have developed a true love of music. As an adult, I began doing drum lessons during the pandemic and I cant wait to show off my new skills. Were all looking forward to playing out soon! Happy Holidays Soundcheck Family!

My daughter has attended both performance based schools in Columbia, SOR and Soundcheck Rock Academy. Souncheck Academy surpasses SOR. At Soundcheck my daughter is in a real band where everyone plays every song on the set list. Soundcheck also offers shows throughout the community for all bands to perform. SOR only offers community performances for a single “All Star” band. Everyone is an All Star at Soundcheck! During the next three months, Soundcheck Rock Academy will play three different venues, Ellicott City Spring Fest, MP3 fest at Merriweather and the quarterly show at the Soundry! My daughter will be playing in all 3 shows compared to just a quarterly show offered at SOR
