As a STEM student here, I would definitely recommend coming here. I mean, the work is hard and it comes on every day, but it is fun, so the classes seem to fly by once you start working. And you make a lot of friends here as well. We do a lot of electronic assignments, so there isnt as much book work.

I am going into the Sixth grade this year even though I have not experienced being at the school every school day for a year like other people have they have showed to me that they are a great school through welcoming me and my friends rather than not caring. It seems to be a very clean that I have noticed. I am very excited to go their this year!

As a current 8th grade student at JN Fries Magnet Middle, I have had the opportunity to be able to fully experience the wonders this school has to offer. Although the curriculum taught at Fries may be the same as the rest of the county, the way it is taught, and the outstanding people who teach it, is advanced and challenging, providing the perfect learning environment to really guide students to excel in their learning. I definitely believe that anyone interested in setting themselves up for a much bigger, brighter, and more successful future should look into attending their junior high years at JN Fries. It was the best decision I ever made and I have no doubt it will be the same for anyone else who applies.

6th and 7th grade was fun Ive always struggled with math and science have always been a struggle for me but our teachers really helped us out by giving us before and after school tutoring. If we had stem projects that could not be finished during the school day you could come before or after school and work on the projects. The field trips during those two school years were okay, and homework was not that much depending on much of a procrastinator you are. This year im in 8th grade and honestly all the other reviews were made when IB was part of the school but after they left some of the stem teachers changed. Our Science and ELA teachers are really cool and this year instead of stem being a certain time it became a graded class. Math 1 honestly is hard but if you do the homework recommended and practice youll be fine. Science and Stem projects are very different and hands on. We have one field trip this year and instead of going to Charleston like previous years were going to DC, so that will be fun. There are disadvantages and advantages but stem is for certain people and it can give you expertise on certain areas a regular school can not. Oh also sports are coming next year for all the soon to be 7th graders.

I am currently a 8th grade IB student, and this school is probably one of the best opportunities a middle school student can have. Additionally I have a sibling in the 8th grade, but on the stem side and we both agree that both sides are great. It is most likely one of the best magnet schools to go to/apply to in the county. I recommend students to apply to this school.

First off, as a student scholar at JN Fries I am expected to be responsible, respectful, trustworthy, safe, and most importantly, HONEST. I am going to be plain out honest here- this school is awful. To get things started, the teachers expect way too much out of you. You are basically assigned a new PBL every 1-2 weeks. These PBLs are redundant, and can be very challenging. I understand this is sort of what I signed up for as a STEM student, but this is too much. If you make one mistake the teachers will go off at you. They are generally rude and assign lots of classwork and homework, resulting in frustration within students. The school is too much into technology. I understand the T in STEM stands for technology. I like having chrome-books. But what I dont like? We use our chrome-books every single day. This gets extremely boring and we never get to do paper work. Teachers always expect you to bring out your chrome-book and complete the work in such a short amount of time. If you dont finish it becomes homework. If one night, you forget to charge your chrome-book, the teachers will get extremely pissed off at you and will strictly discipline you. Sometimes they take your chrome-book away and then the assignments will be electronically. What do you do now? You cant do it and it goes down as a 50 in the grade book. Thats insanity! Teachers always expect you to figure out what to do in a dangerous situation or when we are confused on anything in general because we must be Stemy. This is so dumb. I cant stand this school. Most teachers barely punish the trouble makers and are generally more rude to the nice, quiet kids. If you get in such an amount of trouble, there is a room called the Choices Room. What the hell are we, 5 years old? NO!! Were in middle school, we shouldnt have to go to some dumb 90 degree room that smells like skunk spray for 2 hours of our day to complete a choice board assignment explaining what we did wrong and how we will fix it. This is not for middle school students. Staff treat students with no respect as if the students are still in kindergarten. This is the type of stuff which pisses me off. I can assure you I am not coming back to this school next year. This school sucks, do not send your child here.

I attended JN Fries all three years (2013-2016) in the STEM program and I, for the most part, had a great experience at this school. The teachers challenged me, but it was nothing that was impossible. I spent many days procrastinating, but I still maintained all As. This school definitely challenges you and will push your limits.Due to certain things that I will discuss below, I will explain what i enjoyed and reasons as to why I LEFT the STEM program.Teachers: I have mixed feelings on the teachers. The teachers at this school, that I had, really pushed me. Some were a lot easier than others, but I had a few that really gave my peers and I a very tough time. Some were very strict and if you did something very simple that would normally just earn you a warning, they would give you silent lunch for a certain amount of time, depending on what you did. You are not allowed to walk in rows or talk in the hallways, therefore if you do not follow this rule some teachers will give you silent lunch. Once, I can recall turning around and shaking my head at my friend who said something stupid, and I got silent lunch. You are also not allowed to eat, etc in classes for some reason. Now, in high school, I will eat some snack in every class, along with many other students. Here, you are only able to chew gum, but that is bearable I guess. These teachers can be very tiring and hard to deal with at times.Homework: I do not recall having a large amount of homework in sixth and seventh grade besides the occasional sheet or Aleks for math. In eighth grade, I was always completely loaded with homework // projects to complete. There was barely a night when I was without some type of work to do. During the 2015-2016 year, Mrs. Clark (science) would always load you with confusing work to do. I was a horrible procrastinator, along with many of my friends, and we would always have to stay up very late. There were many late nights typing some type of assignment.Sleep Schedule / Stress: As stated above, be prepared to become sleep deprived. I did not get as many hours of sleep I would like to have had. This school will make you very stressed and overwhelmed. I recommend to try to reduce procrastination and to go to sleep earlier. Why I LEFT: I had left this school due to overall only a few reasons.I was perfectly fine in the program and was planning to attend Central until the second semester of eighth grade. I was more in STEM for the math, rather than the science, therefore science always gave me a harder time. Mrs. Clarks tests were always the hardest things to take and I would normally do at decent, but I ended up failing one of her tests (54%) towards the end of the year so I had decided that that was it for me. I am not one who likes to get bad grades, and this was my first ever F on a test or assignment, so it really set me off. I ended up thinking Do I really want to stay in STEM for four more years? and just realized that I would never be interested in anything science related or would want to put up with any more extra advanced science classes, so I figured it would be better to attend my school in my district.Pros: This school really taught me a lot. I came into my regular school and I feel very advanced and mature compared to everyone else. I will say a simple word that is in my vocabulary and no one will know what it means. It is crazy to think that. I say stuff that would usually be the casual language at JN, and everyone thinks that I am super smart. This school gets you prepared for hard work. I am now easily able to write and essay or make presentations in a short amount of time and earn an A on it. I do not regret coming here at all.Misc. Cons: Most of the students here were upper class, very snobby, and rude. They all thought that they were the coolest, smartest people ever, making them very cocky. They are also very nonreligious and liberal (if you have a problem with that). IB also gets better field trips than STEM. They went to Washington 8th grade, while STEM went to Charleston, when IB went there 7th.

As a rising 9th grader from this school I will say that it was a good experience as well as a let down. In the STEM program I cant say much for IB. One problem was the lack of teachers at some points in the year. My Tech systems teacher Mr.Palko (great teacher) had our whole year planned out and explained. But half way through the year the 8th grade math teacher left and he had to take her place. So we were going to do a huge drones and submarine class, but instead of that the STEM over seer had other plans like ex: blow up a balloon and see how high it goes. The class would finish so early from the lack of class work that we played outside half the time. So dont get you expectations high at this school if you have any.

As many of these reviews suggest, I also signed a honesty policy when I came to this school in 6th grade. I fully disagree (most of it) with another review that has been written. 95% of teachers are great; they teach. And let me say that one review has said that Mrs. Perna was a bad teacher; Mrs. Pernas teaching is what helped me get full scores in math the past 2 years and an almost full score in science. All the teachers named as good teachers in the review, however, are some of the best in the school as well. However, I do agree with the fact that the school favors STEM. They are given much of the new technology because of a grant submitted, yet we dont even get 1:1 anymore; STEM always receives more funding. And yes, this school needs more funding, they made us pay for snow cones at field day. I dont want to pay $5 for a refreshment at a school. As a rising 8th grade IB student, I can also say that as previously mentioned, many of the teach the material as thoroughly as possible, and some students choose to goof off in class and not learn and by the way, the kids will be kids. I think, overall it is a great school and one of the best decisions I made. JN Fries is a decision I am glad I made and the students, teachers, and most of the administrative staff make the school feel welcoming. It is the students choice to learn, and if they dont take the opportunity or dont take the initiative to learn, it might turn out being the worst decision you made. But, it shouldnt be if you try your hardest, and listen to your teachers, and use their techniques. JN Fries is all in all, a great school.

When I came to the school in sixth grade, I signed an honesty policy, so Ill be honest. As a rising ninth grader having spent three years at this school, I can say without hesitation that attending this school was the biggest mistake that I ever made. First off, the school is so extremely poor its not even funny. On field day, the school charged students $5 for snow cones, and couldnt afford to buy streamers for the last dance. The school also greatly favors the STEM program, and as a former IB student, I would know. The STEM program gets all of the new technology and gets to go on more trips than the IB students. As far as the principal, she treats the students like theyre incompetent 8 year olds. In my experience, most of the students were spoiled brats that liked to talk garbage about their friends behind their backs. The ten friends that I had out of approximately 500 students were great, but thats ten people out of the 100 in the eighth grade IB program. Some of the teachers (Brown, Farrell, Landon, Koenig, Chapman, Platt, Giles, Burrell) are amazing and do an excellent job of teaching, but some (Perna, Marburger) are terrible and dont teach us anything! Its hard to say that I enjoyed my learning experience at the school when I didnt have much of one (thanks, Mrs. Perna). Youll read tons of reviews about how amazing this school is, but honestly, it really isnt that great. The biggest regret in my life was choosing to enroll in JN Fries.

I graduated from this school last year and all I can say about it is that it is probably the best middle school out there you can find. They do give out a lot of work but most of it is easy and all you have to do is manage your time well and you will be fine. The teachers there are very nice and so are the students. This school is very challenging but will help to prepare you for high school and you gain a lot of knowledge each year. Some reviews may say that it is very technology based but that is because they are talking about the STEM program. STEM is for students who are more into science, mathematics, and technology. The IB program is more research and writing based. But do expect to be using a computer or laptop for each program. I have been in both programs (IB for 6th and 7th and STEM for 8th) and they are both very challenging. Overall, they do give out more work than a traditional middle school would but you will have time for a social life and to hang out with your family and friends on the weekend. Some weeks may be very busy but some will not. It just depends how much work you can complete in class and if you stay focused.

Pros:Great school over all, the teachers aregreat at their jobs, and theyre nice to the students.I think the S.T.E.M activities are fun and make it easier to learn. Most student are nice, and follow the rules. The students are treated well so the teachers are too.Cons:This year (2015) the clubs werent that good though, they kept the minecraft club but took out the anime club. This makes no sense to me, if your going to remove anime remove minecraft, if you thought anime is a useless club then you guys need to do a check up on minecraft, its also useless. Some students will do bad things behind teachers backs such as using profanity, playing a game, and watching a video.Great school 4 cookies out of 5.

I mean, yes it is a great school. But expectations are getting way too high. It almost as if some teachers dont want you to have a social life due to massive homework loads. I mean yeah, some procrastination is put into play, but no one wants to finish a project on the first day. Some of these project so have to spend so much time on, even as much as spending 40+ minutes a day. Even without procrastination. If you dont work on something every day, get ready to spend over 2 hours working on it, a couple nights in advance. Workload is crazy high and you never really got much of a break. I have been in STEM 6,7 and 8. Some teachers expect you to have all As. Occasionally you will get the one or 2 teachers that say grades are just numbers, and rarely will give you homework. Not only is the work load crazy, but the school is also poor, they practically made money off of giving students the chromebooks. In the sense that it cost 25 dollars to get them, and (dont quote me on it) the the district is sponsored by Dell, so they buy the chromebooks in a mass order, with discounts, they probably cost the school about 15 dollars to buy each one, and the school doesnt spend that full price. The county spends that money on most of it. Also these ridiculous fund raisers. So apparently it is an obligation to do fund raisers, because if you dont you will miss out on an event and have to do work while others are watching dodge ball or basketball games. Not to mention that what they give you are dinky little toys that you buy in a 5 pack at the dollar store. I mean, they are simply terrible.Because of teachers insanely high expectations, if you do something bad, expect to get sent to iss, which they are trying to conform to society of not being harsh so they baby up everything, so they call it The Choices Room. Like no, it is ISS, dont baby it up. The slightest infraction leads to over punishment. So if you playfully jump on a friends back, not even meaning harm. Just jumping on their back, because thats something everyone wants to do, you will get silent lunch for a week. Its crazy how strict some teachers are. Becoming sleep deprived over having too much homework, and stressing over exams, and you get called out over it. Its not that great.Lets not forget to mention mandatory things to complete. Like science fair... Science fair is simply the worst thing ever created. Now you have to do it. Not only that, but it has to be informational, and solving world problems. It makes no sense... Then the giant writing contest for the state, Im not sure if every middle schools requires these things, but in previous years (not in 8th), young authors was a requirement, and I simply hated doing that. That enough cons, so what are some good things about this school?Well I mean the curriculum is good, has some information and is challenging at the same time. You really have to like what you are doing to enjoy being there. If you dont like technology, then would not recommend. Literally everything is on technology. That means, you go out and search for information, leading you to learn it yourself. If you fall behind on information, even if you try to get that information from someone, you will never fully understand it because they probably didnt get much information on the subject either. Then you get tested on it and get a really crappy grade on it, you are lucky if you slide through with all As and Bs. And you are a child prodigy if you have all As. Overall curriculum is good, but tedious to have to go out and find the information, but that does make you understand it better. Also, some of the teachers are great. You will run into great teachers, you know, the kind that is laid back, and doesnt expect massive projects to be done in under 3 days. Those teachers that will let you group up with your friends and let you group together in a project. You have to get lucky to find those, because the ones that arent will eat your bones. And I cant type anymore, because I reached character limit.

(I signed an honesty policy at this school, so Im being 100% real.)I dislike this school. Instead of teaching my classmates and I, some teachers like to put everything online. The school is too much into technology, often we have fundraisers or just weird things like hat day, in which we have to pay money just so we can afford something we dont need. This school is very poor. Just the other day we got a vending machine in the school, its not there for the enjoyment of students, its there being that were so poor and vending machines attract poor kids who choose to spend their money on overpriced foods you can probably find at Walmart for cheaper. Many students will be receiving chromebooks soon, including myself. I dont even want my chromebook but Im forced to get one being that everything well be doing after we get the chromebooks will be online. Even had a teacher say that EVERYTHING will be online. But what else comes with a chromebook? I mean you cant just get one for free right? Exactly. You have to pay $25 dollars just to get the chromebook you probably dont even want. Most of the times these chromebooks dont even work. They take way too long to load whether Im at home or at school. Many teachers always question whether its virus or not that causes these chromebooks to load slow. ITS NOT. THESE CHROMEBOOKS ARE JUST COMPLETE GARBAGE. This school is too poor it almost hurts me, would not be surprised if there is something like pay money to learn day. We like to use the money to buy dumb things we probably dont need. True story, theres this one room in the boys locker room in which lonely old TVs sit around. And why are those TVs there? Most likely cause they were replaced with other TVs we probably dont need. I knew this school was a tech school before coming here in 6th grade, but I didnt know that everything we do is on technology. Every day in certain classes I hear, its on my webpage. I dont know about anyone else, but I cant learn if its always on the webpage. The expectations for this school is simply too high. Most teachers pretty much expect you to be 100% role model students for everyone, they expect you to be perfect. So if you talk or laugh or even move around you can expect to get in trouble. Theres far too much homework for this school, most of the times its just unnecessary things teachers give us cause they HAVE to give us something. (Not all teachers are bad, but theres a few who really know how to make people mad. And not just teachers, some other people in the school can just really make you mad. Not my fault Im not the perfect student you expect everyone to be.) Overall, this school is great for perfect robots looking to have a lot of homework.
