Absolutely worst small animal vet Ive ever been. And I work livestock so Ive seen some bad vets. 6 hours for ridiculously simple diagnostics, was told at 5.15 my dog was a half hour away just waiting on discharge papers. Its now 8 o clock with no attempt from the trash staffing to communicate anything. Nothing was done professionally. It was a horrible triage and then they wanted 3000 to move forward without giving giving any real attempt. What a joke. Guess they just fill the place with people smart enough to pass a test

Overpriced and overrated. The curriculum is run by Hyper-Type A personalities who can’t even cover half the content in their lectures and labs (“independent learning”, lol) and they pressure students into being president of three extracurricular clubs at once. Please don’t put yourself in thirty years of debt for an institution that has rested on its laurels and does not know how to support their students’ mental health and well-being.RIP Dr. Mike Maynard, 1981-2021Not One More Vet

Just as the name says Teaching Hospital. The doctor person who was suppose to diagnose my dog had no idea how to diagnose an infection. The dog had nothing wrong with him except lethargy and fever. She wanted to keep him overnight to the tune of 5k plus run an ultrasound for $600. I had to suggest her to do a blood work to learn about or rule out anything obvious. When all said and done we ended up with a $600 pack of Penicillin. Highway robbery!Yep, great med school! On the positive side they were extremely polite.I feel sorry for people who love their pets and do not know enough about medicine where they get gouged by unknowledgeable vets who throw every test there is to a problem that could have been solved with process of elimination. Or maybe this is their business model? Scare people into huge veterinary medical bills. Pays for an improperly managed school.

I have been bringing my dog to Integrative Medicine for the last 6 yrs. He has a congenital malformation that us not able to be fixed with surgery. If the did not exist and give him the best care, he would be unable to walk, jump and even run. We probably would have lost him by now. I call his appointment his spa day because of all of the palliative care and comfort they give him.We should all be so lucky to have the very capable staff care for us!

I came to the Small Animal Clinic because my vet could not figure out what was wrong with my little sweet Chihuahua. Dr. Dear was amazing! He ordered the diagnostics needed which they performed the same day! I appreciated that so much because I live an 1 1/2 hours from UCD. He found out what was wrong with her and discussed in detail the options so that I could make the best care decisions for her. The clinic is truly just so well organized and the staff are helpful. I am so thankful Dr. Dear and staff were able to help her.

AMAZING service here! I have a bunny that Ive had to bring in a couple of times and everyone Ive spoken with each time has been extremely knowledgeable and kind and has helped me stay calm and level-headed in the stressful situation of having a beloved pet injured. Theyve always communicated very well with me on my pets condition while she was in their care, and have even responded to my voicemail from earlier in the day in the middle of the night just to make sure she was okay. They are always very sweet with her, too, treating her as if she was one of their own pets. You can really see the compassion for animals in the staff here. Definitely recommend, particularly if you have an exotic animal like a rabbit for whom it is usually very hard to find a trustworthy vet for.

After the $250. walk up the stairs to the small animal clinic (carrying the pet, of course), we have never waited less than 30 minutes to see a vet. Usually, students do triage fairly soon, but the wait is always a long time because they tend to deal with emergencies (everyone else saves the $250. ascension and goes to a different vet practice or clinic). This is the source of all vets locally, so clearly its a great training facility; however, its not so great for those of us with sick cats and dogs...and there are other emergency vet hospitals within just a few miles. Google them and save yourself lots of money.

Yes they are a little more expensive than most vets if you have to have major things done, but I find that there regular check up and medications are less than most. Also, they always give you the worst case scenario and best case scenarios so that you can choose what you want done. My dogs have been going there since birth and I would not choose anyone else. They do what is necessary and there have never been any hidden charges. They provide different options for you to choose what you want done. I really love them because they also teach you how to care for your dogs so you dont have any unexpected health problems.

I can not say enough about the knowledge and skill of this facility. They are the number one veterinary school in the country for a reason. Dr. Winer did an impeccable job on my dog Lucys tumor biopsy surgery. Dr. Michelle Steffey came in on her day off to evaluate my dogs case and go over options. I have been to numerous oncologists and had many other options available. This place is all about the animal and what is best is best for the pet. They do not pressure you into anything. As we are battling a sarcoma tumor aggressive surgery is the best choice. They are the only place in the country that can regrow dogs jawbone(Johns Hopkins being the other exception). They bent over backwards to respect my not wanting to go ahead with the more invasive surgery, if we can try to fight it naturally. I believe we will have to do the surgery but God bless them for helping us at this difficult time. Most reasonably priced as well as anywhere I have been. They even gave me detailed instructions on how to monitor Lucy included in a regular consult visit. Thank you

My vet refered me here after my dog was diagnosed with liver failure and they wanted 6000 to jus run tests to see wat was going on with him and than more money to perform any more procedures. This place is not made for the middle class working people who want to save there pets lifes without going into bankruptcy

Our dog was admitted to UCDVTH in October, 2015. When we brought her home after a week of no answers, we found that she had numerous surgical incisions and seeping puncture wounds. We did not consent to these procedures. Our beloved Lab died a mere 24 hours after being discharged. I am horrified to think of what she went through there, without our knowledge or consent.Upon researching this hospital, I learned that UC Davis Veterinarians and the hospital are exempt from all the rules under the California Medical Veterinary Practices Act. And their veterinarians do not have to be licensed in the state of California (see CA Business and Professional Code Section 4830). Unbelievable, but true. This means, UC Davis can give substandard care, alter records, perform unnecessary surgical procedures or experiments, and do not have to seek any informed consent prior. This leaves the customer with little recourse or remedy if something bad happens. We learned later that our veterinarian, Lynelle Johnson, is not licensed in the state of California. Something not disclosed to us prior to admittance. How can this be? I would have never brought our beloved dog to be treated by a non-CA licensed vet! I dont think Im alone in assuming that by paying such outrageous fees, and being treated at the best that the standard of care would be as good as--or better than--any other vet hospital. But that simply is not true.Further, none of this information is readily available to the public, nor disclosed to you as a potential client prior to admitting your beloved animal to their facility. It appears UC Davis does not want this information made public.Run, do not walk from this hospital. Your pet may very well be experimented on or undergo unnecessary procedures in order to teach. And there will be nothing you can do about but pay their massive bill.

Have had two horses treated at the Large Animal Veterinary Hospital. Had excellent care and results on both. One horse was extremely aggressive coming from a history of abuse and the other was deaf, which no one had picked up on. The deaf horse was treated for free and put into a program of study being done at UCDavis. Vet follow through was excellent and both horses made full recoveries (that being the deaf horse was diagnosed and I was able to further her training into a competent working cow horse). The other horse had eye surgery and made a full recovery with full eye sight. I have called many times to the UCDavis hotline for information on difficult situations and have received prompt response and excellent advice from the Vet staff. Cant say enough good about this institution.

An extraordinary experience, far surpassing any expectation I had when I brought my sick cat Jennifer in for an oncology consult. I met with Dr. Fabrice Fosset and vet student Cassandra Shoup, who were so gentle and compassionate with my cat, and so very articulate and thorough in their examination and explanation and recommendations. Over a period of four hours, an extensive exam was performed, they looked at the x-rays and read the test results I brought with me from a local vet, they consulted with faculty clinician Dr. Steven Epstein, and a printout of the findings, recommendations, instructions, and the two medications were given to me. The private rooms are warm and quiet, very stress-free for the animal and human. The waiting rooms are wonderful - very large, quiet, with lots of magazines and coffee/tea/hot water available 24/7. The staff is very friendly and supportive. My cat was diagnosed with advanced malignant cancer, and our family chose no further tests or surgery. Their summarizing report is thorough and so very, very kind. Thank you for entrusting us with Jennifers care. We are so sorry that we did not have better news for you today. We hope that your remaining time with Jennifer is precious, and know that we are here for you if you have any questions in the future. Please feel free to contact us or bring her in; our hospital is open 24/7. I wish I had brought my cat here for all care - vaccinations, checkups, etc. Just recently UCD Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital was announced as #1 in the world. Well deserved. Thank you, Dr. Fosset, Ms. Shoup, and Dr. Epstein.

My 12 lb., 7 year old dog was suddenly experiencing kidney failure - with worse markers of kidney function that my dog who has had kidney failure for the past year. My regular vet (who used to work at UC Davis School of Vet Med) said that in a perfect world, if money wasnt an issue, I would bring my dog here or to Vista Veterinary Specialists in Sacramento, to be put on IV fluids for about 3 days. There was a possibility my dog had eaten something, and IV fluids could flush it out of her system and her kidneys could go back to a healthy functioning. If I didnt do the IV fluids, she would definitely have some sort of kidney problems for the rest of her life. She warned us that it would probably cost around $3,000. We decided to take the gamble, and we are so glad that we did! Within 2 1/2 days my dogs kidney function levels were back to where they had been 2 years prior, and after 5 days in the hospital she was ready to come home. Dr. Lucy Kopecny was my dogs Internal Medicine Resident for the first 3 days, and my dog LOVED her. We got a call every morning from the veterinary student in charge of her, and every evening we came to visit with our dog for 1-2 hours. Dr. Kopecny came in to talk with us 2 of the 3 evenings to give us an update. The first evening we came, I was sitting on the floor with my dog in my lap, and when Dr. Kopecny came in and sat on the floor, my dog quickly went over to her, climbed into her lap, and kissed her face. When Dr. Kopecny left, my dog whined a little. The Senior Student in charge of my dog, Katy Tomalty was great. My dog was the only one she was taking care of for the long weekend, and she clearly spent time with my dog and cared. I found out from my dogs next Senior Student that one of the vet techs really liked my dog and was often found walking through the halls with my dog in her arms. I dont think my dog could have had better care. She is back to her normal self and I am so glad that I took the chance! We had to pay $1,000 the day we dropped her off, $400 deposit 2 days later, and a discharge payment of $1,121.30... coming to a total of $2,521.30. We were given the option of coming back for a check up in 10 days or going to her normal vet, and we chose to come back 10 days later. That visit cost $340 ($80 for the visit, and the rest for tests).

They OVERDOSED my cat with FOUR TIMES the dose of a medicine that was never authorized by the FDA in animals AND should not be given to humans with my cats condition ( according to the FDAs file on humans). My cat was there referred to UCD for a basic procedure for a manageable and stabilized condition. Not only did they overdosed him but the way they managed the aftermath with just the minimum to not have him die on the spot because of their malpractice (oxygen but no nutritional management) was a scandal. He did not ingest a calorie in 4 days they released him into our care straight from the ICU he was a real skeleton, having lost 1.5lb in 4 days ( assessed by my own vet) but UCD denies it ( of course) He never recovered from the overdose and I had to put him to sleep yesterday, 11 days after I got him back. The culprits are: Dr Zacuto ( she overdosed him) Dr Sykes head of service who has not enough honor to handle the consequences of her teams lame job with the slightest decency, the cardiologist Dr Stern who does not hesitate to manipulate information and call referring vets to get his way, the entire Emergency service ( do NOT go there, they dont even know what they are doing and will more likely damage your pet further) with its head of service Dr Hohareau, plus the dean Dr Lairmore & UC Davis chancellor Katehi who are 100% aware of the situation - I wrote to them - and who turned a blind eye to all that. Both of the latter did not have enough honor and decency to clean the mess caused by their unprofessional subordinates. Another proof that Birds of same feather flock togetherFor the love of your pet PLEASE, I am begging you: go elsewhere! Look at the picture of my cats UC Davis medical file here attached. The overdose is mentioned on it and if by the way you want more proofs of what is written above, or if you dont trust what you see, contact me, I will forward you the paperwork with Dr Zacutos own acknowledgement of the overdose.Supplemental note to pet owners: UC Davis had the nerves to refuse to pay for the palliative care after my cat was released and they even billed me with 182$ each time Dr Zacuto ( who overdosed him) was checking my cat, at times 3 times a day!

Love the Large Animal Clinic - SMALL ANIMAL Vet hospital at UCD IS TERRIBLE as far as the veterinarian we had to deal with! Among other things, like not doing the tests I went in for and had the blood draw done, double charging me $115 twice for the same thing (and not doing the tests I needed fhhhh) , not wanting me see the nutritionist at UCD who wanted the tests ... Dr. Bonadio said in reference to me - dog owners were not qualified to take their own dogs Blood glucose. Funny since I test people fine and have had over 70 horses in care; but yeah Im not qualified to take my dogs BG. She said I can catch a pee sample and test for Ketones. I would like to keep a diabetic dog from getting the ketones in the urine in the first place and I test the dog twice a day and have gotten him from 12 units twice daily to 0 by home cooking and monitoring. I have never had a bad experience with large animal. This was my first and last time to the small animal and good to know...
