We love this school! My biggest issue is communication. Its always last minute and not a lot of notice. Otherwise however, my daughter is thriving here! She has grown so much in everything. Miss Annie and Miss Celestes K/1 class has been so amazing for her! We love the school and how much fun my daughter has here.

I cant say enough fantastic things about this school. The leadership and staff have gone above and beyond to create an amazing student culture where everyone is respected and valued. My son has really come out of his shell and is learning so much. He has some special needs and the school has bent over backward to accommodate him and see him thrive. The teachers he has had have been amazing. Keep up the great work, Shoemaker!

Thank You Kelsey 2/3 grade crew leader for being a part of My Averys growth and development of reading! Recently She is so excited almost daily to tell me about what she read and what she learned. I feel like she gets It and better yet Avery feels like she gets it. Awesome job teach.

Some of the teachers here are good while there are others are not. My youngest goes to the preschool section of the school and seams to love it. I think the school had a ruff start, but there seams to be a few members of the staff who could give a rats ass. The have a hands off approach on some things.I do not like the fact that there are two grades in one class room. I hope this school improves.

We love JSS! Teachers, staff, and principal have been wonderful to work with. Teachers seem very engaged with the students and the teaching model. Culture of the school is awesome - inclusive, fun, diverse, and generally a happy place, which is how elementary school should be! I love that they provide a well rounded education, value play-based teaching methods, and the kids spend a lot of time outside.

Grateful to be sending my daughter to a school with professionals dedicated to doing whats best for kids. Really appreciate the focus on community and the impact that the schools culture has on positive learning outcomes. Also appreciate the focus on family involvement in the childs learning, both in and out of school.

We have a daughter in a Kinder/1st class and have had a wonderful experience! Her teacher understands her (and all her crewmates) and meets them at their individual level. We especially appreciate the hands-on nature of the learning at Shoemaker, as well as the diversity of the population. We feel very lucky to have this as our neighborhood school!

I just lowered my review from 2 to 1 star, because the staff has now gone out of their way to give 5 star reviews on Google and Facebook.Reviews are intended to help, not deceive the perception of parents who are trying to do what is best for their children. We took my son out if this school and he enjoys school again. He no longer acts out, sleepwalks, has night terrors, or refuses to talk about his day.

My son really thrived at this school. I know its rating didnt do so well its first year open, but I can say that my 7 year old loved it and excelled through both kindergarten and 1st grade.

This school is brand new, opened in Aug of 2015, the building is amazing. I subbed in the school for three days in two different classrooms as well as having lunch duty on one of the days. From the start I could tell there were no school wide policies. Students were running in the hall and the assisstant principle said absolutely nothing to them. In both classrooms that I subbed in there were no obvious rituals or routines, mind you we are three months into the school year. I didnt see a single classroom in the school that walked in a straight and quite line in the hall. Many times I saw students jumping around like it was an amusement park outside of their classrooms. There were no morning meetings or principle announcement in the mornings. Ive subbed in many schools and this is the worst one Ive been to.

My daughter is a 5th grader at Joe Shoemaker and she is LOVING school this year. Her teacher is amazing and you can tell she loves what she does for a living. I am only sad that the school only goes to 5th grade as this will be her only year that she gets to attend. Couldnt be happier!

Update: Since moving my kids from this school to a school in Roswell, NM I have learned to appreciate all this school offered. After we left, my kids were a little weak in math but very strong in reading in May of 2016. My kids miss this school as do I.Both my kids go here and although they have had some problems with the kids they do like the school. My daughter is in choir and both are in dance. I was disappointed that the kids werent allowed to wear their Halloween costumes like many schools used to allow and I hope they are able to celebrate Christmas. Another downside is that all the classes are mixed so my 1st grader is with kinder and my 3rd grader is with 2ND graders. I sincerely hope their method works as it will show when the kids take their state assessments. Despite the aforementioned downfalls, the front office is nice and my kids are happy which is what matters.

My little brother goes to this school & I gotta say I do NOT like it. Ever since we moved, shoemaker was the closest & thought to give it a try. My son however, did not get in due to space in kindergarten. Within a month of being there, hes been acting out, hes rude to everyone, talks back, & picked up unacceptable behavior. He was NEVER like this. He came from Fulton Elementary & changed alot in a bad way since being in shoemaker. Its like he doesnt care for school anymore & does not enjoy it. Hes in summer school this year cuz hes fallen behind, luckily, its taken place in Samuels Elementary (where my son goes to school). & After a week of being in Samuels for summer school, hes now actually liking school again. He comes back & talks about his day, hes in a good mood & how talks about wanting to transfer when the school year starts. Ive heard this school is being shut down & honestly I agree! Yall need to get your act together, get your teachers in check ..then reopen. The behavior & education on these students is unacceptable.

I agree with Mike. I had big hopes for this school. The staff sensors and denies wrong doings. I wrote a review on FB and it was immediately taken down. The issue (as per most institutions with poor leadership) is leadership top down. My sons teacher Ms. Sarah is amazing. The issue I have and continue to have is that a teacher told another student to punch my son in the face and instead of Christine (the principle, who interestingly enough has posted her own skewed review as 5 stars) reacting in a timely manner I had to get the district involved (which still did nothing). Shortly after my son was called a ni**er and we were asked to be understanding of the student who called my son such an unacceptable word. I have repeatedly asked Christine for an apology for how she mishandled the punch him in the face incident and she flat out refuses. Not very becoming of an individual who is supposed to set the tone within the school for acceptable behavior from both students and faculty. The method is loosely tied to Montessori which I love and hold in high regard. We paid for private Montessori for years and we took a chance and decided to put our son in public schooling for social relation reasons. Unfortunately, we are stuck at this school for at least another year; however, education wise if all the teachers were like Ms. Sarah (which they arent a great deal are passive aggressive towards the kids and the subs they get are just as bad) I think the school would fair much better. Im giving the school 2 stars because Ms. Sarah is great and understands a diverse population with students that may have a lot going on in their lives. She is patient and works quite closely with parents to keep us not only informed but as a partner in education. Im not as convinced leadership is as competent. I would also like to see better school communication i.e. messages sent home via email and not just in the kids back packs. Embrace the theory behind the school more (true expedition learning), spend more time educating parents who are new to the concept of expeditionary learning, get the kids outside and dirty, get the parents involved by mandatory volunteer time and truly showcase the students. I understand this is a public school and the money isnt always there, however, parents such as myself who can do a little more are always willing to when asked. The school has a great deal of potential, I challenge the district next fall to change up leadership and give the students what they need; educators who care not only about covering their own behinds but about the overall well being and education of the children.
