I just had my baby yesterday and he was an emergency c-section, they took good care of me. They made me at ease for the surgery. Theyve been amazing to my son and hes been in pediatric icu and hes thriving. During my recovery, Theyve provided pain medication every few hours and they even provide my medications that I take daily from home. They treat me like Im the only patient in this hospital. I will always recommend this hospital!

I have to write my oppinon because Im coming across too many Duke doctors that is not pateint enough to listen to me about why Im at the hospital. The doctors I have been seeing has been talking over me as I treid to explain my symptoms, as if they know it all. Which shouldnt be the case because every patient is different and it not about one size fit all reaction.I like Duke, however, Im loosing safety in thier health care system and respect about the care they are providing for people who choose their brand, entity and what they believe inn. There is a reason why Duke hospital dont have even 4 stars on google reviews as of today 10/13/2021 it a shame for a health care like Duke brand. They need to re evaluate the the doctors they hire. Duke say they care but they RAELLY dont!! I say this because, I have tried twice to write my concerns through survey but they make it so difficult do so by trying to verify people educational level before I guess they take them serious.

My daughter had a fever and a lot of stomach pain, so I took her to the emergency room. It was 4:30 pm when I arrived, but they kept my daughter waiting for 7 hours. She had a stomach ache every half an hour, because her body was hot, so she had a nosebleed, I went to inquire and begged 7-8 times to let her go to the doctor but they didnt care. just ask me to keep waiting, if I dont want to wait, just go home. So, after more than 7 hours of waiting, I couldnt wait any longer, so I had to take my daughter home at 12 oclock. I feel very sad and hurt when people treat my daughter like this. She is only 5 years old

I was an employee of Duke Hospital i obtained the position through Duke Temp. services. I found a full time perminate job elsewhere and ended my employment at Duke. I called Robin Carter to let her know that I terminated my employment and wanted to make sure that I turned in everything necessary in order to avoid any hiccups with my pay check on 10/8 today. She assured me that everything would be taken care of she sent me a time sheet to sign I signed it and then returned it immediately to her. I waited a couple of days and called back to make sure I did not need to do anything else and Ms. Carter acted as if she did not remember our conversation. That is when i started recording our conversations because. MS. Carter gave me the run around every time I spoke with her when all I was trying to do is get paid for time I worked and receive pay that is owed to me.

Can’t say much about the quality of patient care since I have not been a patient in this hospital. However, I do come here to do research, and every single day when I walk pass the sidewalks towards the entrance, there are hospital nurses, staff, and doctors smoking outside the hospital within Duke grounds. This behavior is clearly a violation of Duke’s tobacco use policy as well as a violation of Durham County’s Smoking Ordinance. I am upset that I have to walk pass so much smoke when going in to work, as it is very uncomfortable and I am concerned about my health. It is not just a few staff, but many of them. They are also sitting on benches that have no smoking signs on them. I am also disappointed in Duke for not taking any action to stop this problem, as it is happening every day. Also, many healthcare workers are taking their masks off just outside the hospital entrance while still in close proximity to other people.

Live been going to Duke for that last 3 years. I’ve not been pleased with most of the results. My last primary care doctor only came in on Fridays and that’s the only time I could see him/get my medication refilled. When I was diagnosed with a DVT/PE I waited in the ER for 9 hours! I could of literally died waiting. Now I had an appointment made 2-3 months ago and this doctor was an hour late. I thought that’s what appointments were for. This isn’t an emergency room I should NOT have to wait that long to be seen for an appointment. I’ve came to the conclusion that Duke just doesn’t care. Long as they get that Money they will NOT care for you. I’m actually going to look into a lawyer for negligence

After many doctors and surgeries in our hometown my wife was facing amputation of her right arm. Doctors Im Spartanburg were set that was only option. No insurance at time and no clue who to see or speak to for help. Talked to many other places but from the very first person I spoke to at Duke I was given hope. The girl answering phone spent about 20 minutes listening to be my story, brought a second person on the line to make sure I was directed to the right person. Eventually I was transferred to Dr. Mcmann I believe. His assistant said if I sent her medical records they would look at them. I faxed them the next day and called to verify they were received. She told me they were to and would be given to doctor when he came out of surgery. About an hour later the doctor himself called me back in and told me what he thought it maybe, which be was absolutely correct about. Several surgeries and many doctors in hometown could not figure out and he did on the phone. He transferred me to Dr. Cox whom he said specialized Im that area. I explained story to his assistant and again told them no insurance, no money, not anything to offer them for anything they did. She told me not to worry about it and scheduled appointment for next day. First visit gave hope and they scheduled some test a week following where they verified their suspicions. 2 day later she was in first surgery of 3. 3 surgeries and about 9 months later and she was good as new. They even had a plastic surgeon in the operating room just to make sure she was outwardly left as well as possible. Its been nearly 6 years since last visit and she is still great. They had given me papers to fill out when we checked out for various charities they has and we have not seen even a single bill for anything. Everyone we dealt with there was on a whole different level than where we live from the doctors to the girl answering the phone to the nurses to the person at the info desk. They really give hope that is easily lost on the medical corporation money machines where we live. They genuinely cared. I cannot thank them all enough. If we ever have anything beyond a broke bone happen we will drive the 4 hours to them. I didnt realize that there actually existed hospitals of their caliber. If you live in the southeast and have anything major I strongly recommend going to them before any small town doctors are given a chance to make the first incision.

Every member of my dedicated team was very patient, helpful, and caring while I was having a panic attack about having to undergo the surgery. I tried to hold off on the anxiety medication the anesthesiologist offered me but in the end I knew I was causing more problems than necessary so I went ahead and let him give it to me. Im thankful that I was very relaxed the rest of the procedure but not too out of it for the birth of my child and was finally allowed my fiance to join me on the OR (this was during the heigh of the pandemic). We delivered a healthy baby girl and her first birthday is coming up. Huge thank you to Duke University Hospital ❤️

I brought my mom to the hospital today for an appointment. It was for a wellness visit and was important that her caregiver bring her, which is not a problem. My issue is even with all the emphasis on someone being with her that I was not allowed to go back with her. I had to wait in the lobby for her, however there were other patients who were allowed to have a family member with them. I asked for the policy hoping to hear that this rule was a practice by the hospital as a whole, however I was told it was based on the comfortability of the technician. This practice is based on bias. If the hospital set a policy which was expected for all to follow, I would respect and understand but allowing for each technician to decide is quite unfair. Consistency would be great when setting these guidelines, but its probably expecting too much.

The care is excellent and you feel like you are being listened to and cared for in a professional prompt manners. The reason for the 2 stars though is the excessive costs and deception they partake in. Recently I had to visit a clinic within the hospital, and so I had a copay to pay upfront which I did. Well after the fact and this is a new thing apparently. They have the power to charge you MORE MONEY after the visit. In which is cost about double what my copay was. This was ludicrous enough as the full cost should of been upfront, instead of being slapped with a after visit bill. Now I did have a couple tests they wanted to do, and I chose to do one of them outside of the hospital due to cost reasons. As they had quotes me for it and so I considered my options. As I understood for the other one, my insurance could of covered it, which didnt sit right with me, yet I didnt question it. Then another red flag was when I went to the hospital to have the test done and didnt have to pay anything. Well long story short the test was not completely covered by my insurance, and instead cost a lot of money and put me in debt with them. I was not happy to say the least and felt decieved, and even tried to fight it to no avail. So I will be looking to go somewhere else at this point as they simply are excessive in their costs. Which out weighs the care to give you honestly.TL:DR: expect to pay a lot of money when doing any sort of visit to a clinic within the hospital. Best to simply go somewhere else as its more cost efficient at this point to get about the same level of care.

If I could give this place ZERO STARS, they would most certainly have it!!!!!!!I went into the ER around 9pm on the 29th with excruciating pain. (Wont explain for what). I sat there for 12 HOURS and NEVER even saw a doctor. When I went up to the front desk nurse and explained what was going on with me, how long I had been there and asked when I would be seen, she told me that she didnt have answer for me and I needed to go back to the cubicle........ When I explained the pain and what had happened, she didnt believe me. I was taken back for a ctscan and blood work and then right back to the cubicle to Never been seen or even given my results. Was never handed any documents to fill out, was never asked about my insurance. When I finally decided to leave, the nurse had no remorse. She didnt try to explain that they would be with me within a specific time frame or anything. Just said, OK cool. Sit down. Ill take your iv out and you can go.She was ALSO very rude to the elderly man that went up before me.This place and their doctors DO NOT care about their patients ESPECIALLY if they have covid. Theyll let you sit there all night and will never check in on you or take you back to a room. Its been 10 days now, that Ive had this pain going on and they would NOT help me. I will NEVER go back to this hospital ever again. And if you go in for heart problems through the ER, be ready to sit there just as long as I did and never be seen. A lady had to sit in quarantine with me (granted she wasnt there for 12 hours, BUT STILL) and ended up leaving before I did because she had not been able to see a doctor the ENTIRE time that she was there. Its absurd and the lack of compassion and respect is outrageous.

I have been a patient with Duke for nearly 30 years. I have seen a steady decline in services, especially in the last 15 years. As Duke has bought nearly every medical practice in North Carolina and put up numerous pretty shiny new buildings, the ratio of practitioners to patients seems to be seriously declining. It is now taking 2 to 3 months to see a specialist, no matter how serious your issue or how long you have been a patient of that provider. It is appalling! The propaganda regarding socialized medicine is that we will have to wait for months. Hello, we are already there, while paying huge amounts for insurance and co-pays. I love my providers, but Duke is a money making machine that does not put patients first.

I also go to the Lupus Clinic and always received excellent, professional & caring health care. Actually had my daughter with high risk pregnancy there, 18 yrs ago. Parking deck bit steep at $2 an hour and only option you have. Hospital has many public restrooms, gender neutral and wheelchair accessible. Free Wi Fi, Starbucks coffee in several locations, cafeteria, vending machines, gift shop, admissions desk and valet parking. Although the emergency room there is ridiculous with the wait times, always crowded. I’ve waited more than 12 hours just to be seen!! Then another 8 plus hours to have work up and to be discharged. I had a very stressful experience just trying to find parking for an outpatient appointment. You have to pay between $9-$12 to have your car parked otherwise it will take you hours to find parking and you miss your appointment (what about folks with low socioeconomic needs who arent privileged?). Once you get into the main clinic the signs and layout to find the departments is not intuitive or user friendly. You have to walk so much so I feel terrible for folks who have disabilities to have to go through that confusion. Im giving it 2 stars only because the doctors and hospital personnel are amazing! They arent snooty at all which is great given my above concerns about the administrative and layout ambiance. I cannot find a place to leave a review for the transplant area but I think I know why that is. The transplant area mainly the kidney and pancreas area is a very unprofessional part of Duke. Nurse Dianne is a nightmare and very rude an unhelpful to get assistance from her, and I was denied service and a transplant without meeting or seeing any doctor. Becareful of dealing with this woman, Nurse Dianne, she will go talk to the Physicians and have them not give you a transplant if she does not like you. I tried to speak to customer relations about the issue and was told this has happened numerous times with this particular area. It seems like Duke does not watch this area but they charge tons of money to get transplants but give very cheap unprofessional service. There is a serious unprofessionalism in the whole state of North Carolina dealing with kidney and dialysis area. I believe you get very bad treatment because its a lot of disabled people and ethnic people who need kidney services and I feel you get treated poorly because of this. Duke prides themselves on being professional and number one but the service I received was very unprofessional it was very rude and had no compassion whatsoever. I wouldnt want a kidney transplant anyway from a place so rude and unprofessional I would be terrified they would kill me on the table and not even care. I have been told by several nurses to be careful in North Carolina because places will write bad notes about you and they will try to Blacklist you from getting a kidney transplant and getting Professional Care it is a buddy system going on in North Carolina and if one person does not like you or says something about you in a negative light it is very hard to regain your reputation so be aware of North Carolina nurses and doctors in the kidney medical Arena. I cannot speak for any other Medical diseases that go on in North Carolina but the kidney Community is terrible from the experience I had. I would not let Duke babysit my cat let alone recommend them for a kidney transplant. Terrible service as seems to be no ones watching over this Hospital go somewhere else and preferably out of this state. 😢

This has been going on for at least 4 months. We have complained and asked multiple times what we can do to make this better with no real answer. Then today we show up for treatment, 3 weeks after our last one, and are told it was scheduled a week too early. This was after we had blood work at 8 am, saw the provider around 10 am and then were placed in a room with our port accessed around 12 noon did they realize we were too early. Why did this happen?Next, we go up states to reschedule all our visits for the 4 week schedule we are told we have and no one knows what is going on. Still sitting in the ER after 9 hours. I have asked a few times what is taking so long and have not been given an answer. The head nurse is condescending to other patients. There are 5 other ER’s closer to my house but I chose Duke because I thought it would be a better experience. Fool me once!

You put the IV in my arm incorrectly to the point the saline wasnt going into my body for the 1st 40 minutes, then I get a bill charging $2600 for my visit and $500 of that was because of the IV!? Are you kidding me!? Then wont even explain the other charges. They falsely coded me as a level 5 then after I called them on it dropped to a level 3 and all of this with me not even getting a room. I sat it the waiting room and eventually left because I was not being seen by anyone! THIS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!!!

I recently spent 4 days at the Duke Cardiac Unit visiting a relative. First I want to say that I found the patient care impeccable and second to no other hospital that have I ever visited. However, the Mens rooms were horrible. The urinals are so shallow that urine splashes on to the floor and there are puddles under each and every urinal. The floors are sticky and filthy. I was in 5 different Mens rooms and could not find a clean one (1st floor and 7th floor). It is impossible to walk out of the Mens room without having urine on the bottoms of your shoes and tracking it onto the carpet. What a filthy situation, especially for such an otherwise fine hospital.Worse yet, the cleaning staff went by every morning and never mopped the floors. There wasnt even a mop on the cart. The staff person went in for a few moments and then walked to the next rest room. This is a failure that should have the immediate attention of the maintenance chief.

We arrived at 10:20am....its now 9:11pm and we STILL havent been seen. There are people in here that have been waiting even longer. That is a ridiculous amount of time to have to wait. The staff keep telling us to wait another 30 minutes because beds are opening up, but then when we ask an hour later they say the same thing. When we threaten to leave they say wait 30 more minutes. 11 hours later here we are still waiting. This is the hospital we were referred to? Wow. Would not recommend.

The men and women of Duke saved my Dads life. His liver went bad due to his gallbladder being bad. They did a transplant and now my Dad looks and feels better. They still take good care of him and check on him. They care for their patients and treat them like family. Thank you Duke for giving me more years with my father. Love and Peace.

Had my hip replaced yesterday and I’m on my way home now. The whole team at Duke was incredible. The nurses easily went above and beyond for my 24-hour stay to make sure I was as comfortable as possible and worked with me to get home to relax and heal. Thank you Duke Hospital and Duke Ortho for a great job!

My grandmother has been in the hospital waiting to have a fairly routine procedure after a fall at home Sunday night. She keeps getting bumped by more pressing surgeries. while we understand her procedure is not an emergency, her waiting indefinitely means she cannot eat (for 2 days now) and they are not getting her up out of bed much at all. This sets her up for blood clots which can be catastrophic. Duke needs to do better for their patients! They toute being one of the best in the country yet they make a 91 yr old woman wait indefinitely for food because she has to be ready to go to the OR at a moments notice.

Honestly, Im very appreciative to the team members at Duke that saved my child. Staff is amazing. Especially the team members and nurses from the orthopedic surgery and PICU. They are truly the greatest! They made my childs stay comfortable and fun while he was in so much pain. We love you all from the bottom of our hearts and God Bless!!!

The doctors are good but the case workers are rude, mean, and will lie to you in an instant. The majority of staff are inconsiderate, rude, not on time with medications, takes between 10 and 20 minutes for a nurse to get to bed ridden patient after patient tells them they need to go to bathroom or anything else. Some nurses are great, others need to find other employment. Very disappointed at visitation policy as they blame everything on Covid19 and are not compassionate at all. We were told it took 3 days to get patient transferred to Duke because ALL beds were full but when we got there I personally walked around on that ward and counted 18 empty beds they lie to get government money. (((I might also add, that once Duke transfered wife to the Duke rehabilitation center , we were told that only one person could visit and Noone else. Since our daughter lives an hour away, we live 4.5 hours away, I allowed daughter to be designated visitor although I was staying with wife everywhere she had to stay but they werent allowing ANYONE to stay, so Id rather daughter be able to visit daily than me weekly. They also told us each patient would be in separate rooms due to Covid19 but after my wife was there a week they moved another patient into her room.. I spoke with wife on phone daily and a few days after they moved other patient into room I noticed a cough and wheezing. I spoke with several nurses over the next few days and they claimed it was nothing to worry about that it was from not moving around. They didnt check and they were wrong, she had aquire Covid19. They sent her home with covid and the next morning she had to be ambulance to another hospital where she subsequently died! Beware

Had a knee replacement there and the entire experience was smooth and professional from the moment I entered. The nurses who tended to me prior to surgery were fantastic, as were the doctors who administered the anesthesia. In fact, one was from England and had a dry wit that left me in stitches. Finally, the surgeon (Dr. Jiranek) was a godsend, having a specialty in my area of concern. His kindness and skill made a huge difference. Everyone on my hall, from the nurses, to PT, to the transporters, were wonderful. A special nod to Katie, who took such good care of me, and to Sabrina, the dedicated physical therapist, who had me on my feet right away.

Dont be fooled by the Duke name. Worst ER Ive ever been to. Its a training hospital. They found out my father had a serve blood clot after an ultra sound & still made him walk back to the waiting room for another hour. The ultra sound tech was really fast and only looked at his thigh to knee and stopped. He walked back to the waiting room and was called in the back to draw blood. He questioned the need for blood work and a doctor came out of a room to inform him he had a clot and sent him back out to the waiting room. We spent a total of 6 hours in the waiting room & the doctor called it quick after we finally got a room. I was dumbfounded. My father repeated his story to the nurses and doctors, multiple times who didnt take the time to look at his chart. Had him self inject the medicine and sent him home without consulting a specialist like they promised. My father has a long medical history with multiple surgeries in the last couple years. Dismissed my concerns and sent him on his way. We tried calling duke to have them provide a specialist referral to see a doctor where he lives in Seattle. Duke denied the referral request because the doctors are outside of their network. Take that into consideration if you plan on going to this ER, you will be denied a specialist referral unless your doctor is in their network. Update - after arriving home in Seattle, he immediately went to his hospital where they provided another ultra sound. The Seattle hospital was very thorough and did an ultra sound on both of his entire legs and his stomach & found the clot was from his hip all the way to his calf. Since Duke stopped at his knee, they only said it was in his thigh. Will never think about returning to Dukes ER.

So first off I would like to say that, the staff is great here especially on the 5th floor. I’ve spent quit some time here now and everything has been great and the staff are awesome. But this damn food is the absolutely worse. I think they need better meals and choices taste wise. I think it’s bad enough that people come here on very long stays ,the least that could be done is to serve them some food that’s tasteful. The portions are very small and it’s not much to choose from.

This hospital has broke more HIPPA laws than I can count. In the Er with my Aunt and she was placed in a hallway after being brought here via ambulance. She was talking out her head and workers are just passing her by. Some were laughing...no compassion or empathy for the people they are suppose to be assisting. I will NEVER bring another family member to this ER Again. No respect for the patients. Sorriest place ever.

(Dr. Haywood Brown) & his Team for Prenatal Medicine & Treatment in Labor & Delivery at Duke Medical Center has been absolutely amazing and accommodating. In all of my experiences with Doctors and medical facilities they have been the absolute best. The initiative and willingness to revise my surgery due to high risk pregnancy conditions gave us more hope & faith for the future of our Child. The Staff here pulls together quickly in a professional manner. Everyone is polite and kind and their concern for you is very genuine. I am Grateful for the opportunity to experience the excellence of Duke University Hosptial.

Not superior hospital at all!ER wait times are extreme, medical staff are rude and definitely not compassionate caregivers.Duke is a teaching hospital. The do patch work to get you in and out only to have you return 2-3 more times for the same problem. Thats because underlying causes of your illness is not looked at.

Its a hospital. Ive had a night nurse, while I was admitted, insert a latex catheter knowing I have a latex allergy, but the response from the other nurses and doctors and administration was good. They apologized, worried about me, were very patient, explained anything I asked about and stayed professional, courteous. My oldest was also an ER patient while still a newborn. Yes the wait was long. But the staff nurses and doctors were kind, thorough and considerate.

As a sickle cell patient, with numerous crises & hospitalizations our hometown hospital has made so many mistakes and couldnt help us. We were referred to Duke Childrens hospital and we have had a HUGE turnaround they take the time to come up with a pain management plan instead of just giving my baby so much meds and actually tending to her needs. I am so thankful for Duke & their care for helping my baby and being the best!

This hospital is wonderful I’ve been seeing a MS specialist for almost 2 years their He is awesome.. But when it comes to the ER they suck unprofessional, they say one thing and do another. I arrived yesterday with numbness in my face on my right side got to the hospital at 2:30 I didn’t get back in a room until6:00 I didn’t leave until 11:30 I’m in Nursing school currently and I would have never had thought Duke ER department would be so poorly ran, I even asked to speak to the charge nurse and she as well didn’t have a clue of proper procedure. I will be notifying My doctor as soon as he gets back in the office I will let him know I will not be returning back to the duke ER but I would love to continue with him.

Ive been dealing with health issues the last 15 years of my life and it has been mentally and physically taxing. I just moved to North Carolina back in august and prior to that have had to deal with hospitals and doctors that treated me in ways that were beyond cruel. I eventually reached the point where I essentially gave up on trying to figure out what was wrong with me but my mother in law and wife insisted that I give Duke a chance and it was the best decision I have ever made. The doctors at Duke have treated me with nothing but respect, have made me feel that they actually care about my issues and want to figure out what is wrong with me. This place is top notch health care and I am thankful in a way words cannot express. They resorted my faith in healthcare and doctors in just a few months. I used to dread going to the doctors or hospital out of fear that I would be treated like garbage but, since I started going here I no longer have that fear. Duke represent everything that healthcare should be.

Best hospital Ive had to deal with ever! I know if we have ANY issues in the future we will be taking the extra 45 min drive and coming here instead of going to the hospital in Roxboro!

This is absolutely the worst institution that I have ever worked for and being a patient for, as a matter of fact, do anything with. Very arrogant, inhumane, irresponsible, bureaucratic, expensive, heartless, cold, careless. They should be fired from care giver business and be oust out of community! I would not give them even 1 star!
