Great gym, dont waste your time with exhausting warm ups. Warm up is drilling related skills for the topic of the day. Teach leglocks. Super laid back. No silly bowing at the mat and calling the coach master or anything. Good environment for women to train as well.

Mike and Lena are excellent instructors. There are kid and adult classes for people of all ages. Lena encourages all the women in the class to be confident and to use the skills they have learned while grappling and Mike is excellent at making sure you roll with the correct techniques. Together they make an awesome team! They really show you that no matter your physical ability or age, you can be successful at jujitsu. Come check it out!

Mike and Lenna do a great job! The 4-7 age group class is manages extremely well. The children all have a lot of fun and learn something new every lesson! Mike and Lenna are extremely patient with this age group as well. The adult classes are very well organized and great for all experience levels. Dont expect to show up and not work hard! The coaches are very active participants in training and expect the same effort in return. Whether you are joining to compete, joining just to learn self defense or even just for a great workout this is a great place to do it! If you are in the Elk Grove/Galt/south Sac area I highly recommend Mixed Grappling Arts!

My kids love training here, and Mike, Lena, and David have an amazing gift of being able to teach and work with their students patiently. Its no surprise that their classes have grown exponentially! I highly recommend MGA to everyone!

This place is amazing......the reason why I gave them a 4 stars is that they false advertised about self defense and when I asked them do you teach self defense and they said no, that was almost 8 years ago, dont know about them all but overall the school is amazing for competition, if you wanna learn self defense on a regular basic, would strongly recommend go elsewhere.

Like most people, I was looking for a clean, professional, and friendly environment where my daughter and I could train. I found Mixed Grappling Arts to be such a place! Lenna and Mike are a husband and wife team that are very knowledgeable, helpful, and super friendly! I drive from Jackson just to go to MGA. Although there are a few Schools closer to where I live, MGA is well worth the drive. Their prices are an exceptional value! The School is kept extremely clean and it is very Family friendly. If you are in the area or even an hour away (such as I am) look no further than Mixed Grappling Arts, you won’t be disappointed.Drop on by and check it out. The first two trial classes are free!RespectfullyRonny

I started training with MGA in March of last year, and its easily the best decision Ive ever made. My family and I immediately felt comfortable when we first walked in. Its a very welcoming environment with no egos, and everyone there is friendly and there to help. Mike and Lenna are awesome coaches! They make learning so fun, and take the time to break down the lessons in great detail. You never feel rushed, and can go at your own pace. The gym itself is immaculate! The mats are mopped and cleaned multiple times daily, and it always smells nice and tidy in there. I definitely recommend Mixed Grappling Arts to anyone interested in training BJJ! If youre looking to get in shape, make new friends, and learn this wonderful art and sport, come on by! You wont regret it!

Mike and Lenna are two of my favorite people. They really know how to teach Jiujitsu in order to make you a complete grappler. I have not trained at another gym and gotten the results that I have here at Mixed Grappling Arts. They are warm, welcoming and always have a sense of humor about themselves. They really know their stuff and take Jiujitsu seriously without all the formalities of bowing or calling them professor. You really feel you can get to know them and become apart of their Jiujitsu family. This school is not only great for adult Jiujitsu but for kids as well. They must have over a hundred kids and watching those kids grapple puts me to shame. I would certainly feel comfortable bringing my kids to learn under Mike and Lenna. If you are thinking about bringing you or a friend or a kid in to train-stop thinking and come on in. You wont regret it.

Bought a groupon for this place. Its clean and the female instructor is welcoming. The male instructor however seemed distant and not approachable. There aren’t any exercise routines here. All you do is get straight to the bjj moves. I know that in this sport conditioning and exercises are a must.I got injured within two weeks and emailed the instructors to see if they could freeze my account (as ive done before in other bjj gyms like NDA and WAZA) but they said they couldnt and encouraged me to still go to class while injured. I still have the email to prove it.That to me was a deal breaker. Beware, get injured and you will still have to pay even if youre not there. I won’t be back here again.Good luck

The two years that I have been training at MGA have changed my life. As an out of shape man over 40 I was overweight, my hips had limited range of motion, cardio was the pits and my core was weak. Gyms never worked for me more than a month or so.MGA turned all that around. My resting pulse is under 60, my blood pressure and overall fitness is great. This is by far the best style of fitness for both males and females.

I started my Jiu-Jitsu journey back in 2010, trained at many great places and under many great instructors before. But hands down, this is by far this is the best place that I have ever been to. Starting off, this place is very clean and organized; everything is spotless. The instruction here is also phenomenal. Furthermore, the lessons here is explained in a very clear way and the curriculum is designed for the students to progress at the fastest rate possible. What I love most about MGA though, is the amount of individual attention you get from the instructors. They will help you shape your Jiu-Jitsu game to your very own grappling style that fits best with your specific body type. The location has a HUGE amount of mat space! The biggest Grappling gym I have been to and is currently the biggest in the Sac/Elk Grove area.Whether its just looking to get back in shape, learning self defense, or competing in the sport, I highly recommend Mixed Grappling Arts. Five stars.

Great instruction, friendly students (event to guests) and super clean!Hope to see you guys again soon.

Mixed Grappling Arts (MGA) is located in the heart of Elk Grove. MGA is down the street from old town Elk Grove, Elk Grove High and Joseph Kerr Middle School. There is plenty of parking in front of the academy with two huge overflow parking areas at each side of the building. The interior of MGA is relatively new and well kept. There is a unisex bathroom and two changing rooms. A water cooler is available if you don’t bring your own drinks or you can walk to the convenience store located in the same shopping center. The mat area consist of a single continuous vinyl tarp as opposed to multiple squares ensuring all dirt and hair gets picked up when cleaned. With multi part mats, dirt, hair and sweat can get pushed into the cracks to fester. Walls near the mat area are padded to provide added protection when rolling.Submission grappling (nogi) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is taught on alternate days with BJJ on Mondays and Wednesdays and NoGi is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The week’s curriculum is posted at the beginning of every week, so you can get an idea of the week’s theme and the topics for each day. A class specifically tailored for wrestling and BJJ takedowns is available after the adult class. For the kids, a fundamentals and advanced class exist. My 8 year old son is currently enrolled in the fundamentals class, and loves it, while I attend the adult classes in the evening.Head instructor Mike Uhlinger is an excellent instructor with an attention to detail. Not only will he demonstrate a technique, but he gives detailed explanations on why a technique works or doesn’t. Lessons of the day cover positions or techniques that relate to each other. Mike’s teaching style emphasizes drilling a system of positions / techniques and the transitions between these positions. It has really helped me understand the body mechanics needed to become smooth and flow better. It’s obvious a lot of forethought is put into the curriculum and class structure. The class structure is planned to the minute. Warmups, instructions, repping with and without resistance are on a strict schedule. We are constantly moving and being pushed through the entire class. The school has a very encouraging environment. Students (adult class) come from a variety of different backgrounds: from High School and College students to working professionals. Everyone is enthusiastic about learning and working hard in a safe environment. Everyone is always willing to help and provide positive feedback. If you’re in the Elk Grove area and you’re interested in trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or submission wrestling, I highly recommend giving MGA a try. The instruction is top notch and the vibe is like family.
