When I found the school I was excited for my second grader to learn Hawaiian culture and dance. Her first day there she was just thrown in with no instructionsThe teacher asked several times if everyone knew certain moves. Everyone raised their hand but my daughter. She replied ok good and moved on completely ignoring her. Even had them do a dance everyone knew while the teacher stood on the side and just watched. When I approached her at the end of class to voice my concern that she received no correction or instructions. She told me that if I didnt like it I could look elsewhere. That was how she taught her classes.

I knew the minute I walked into this halau (school) that this was the place for me. I had chicken skin from all the beautiful energy. This is a traditional school where you learn by imitating the teachers as best you can. There are classes for all ages and skill levels. All are welcome. There is chanting and drumming many opportunities to perform. It is really fun!! Hint: the school entrance is the back door off the 2nd street parking lot.

I have been dancing hula since age 10, in Hawaii and in the mainland. When I moved to San Diego in 2012, I was desperate to find a Halau. It took me a year to find a school that I was happy with and that was Kuhai Halau! I felt the Aloha spirit from not only Kumu K but from the other students as well. Kuhai Halau is truly an Ohana, a family full of kind hearts. If you want to experience what hula and family really means, this is the place for you!

Dancing has always been a passion of mine and I always wanted to dance hula but there was never a halau (hula school) around. When I moved to San Diego, I decided to look for a halau and I found Kuhai Halau and I immediately fell in love with this halau. Kumu K and her students were very inviting. They truly made me feel welcomed. This halau not only teaches hula but it also perpetuates the culture. If your looking for a hula school with hula, teaches hawaiian culture, makes you feel like ohana and has the Aloha spirit. This is the halau for you!!!
