Shift Lu has trained many a student that have made the USA Wushu Teams. Meaning, they are the best in the country and represent the USA in international competitions. In response to Terry Songs remarks. Yes, she gives the young kids a little playtime in the class beginning as a way for them to warm up and have a little fun, in the form of them chasing each other around, some of these are very young kids, but then it is instruction time. I could go on and on, but Ill just say, that if you want to be good at wushu and want an instructor that has dedicated her life to it from the time she was a young girl, then this is the school for you.

As an enthusiastic amateur athlete the only thing I would say about this place is its rubbish. The owner of the place is constantly forcing her students into pointless performances and competitions. If one isnt interested in any shows or competitions and simply wants to train for self enjoyment, the owner completely disregards the individual.Additionally the place is constantly swarmed by screaming, laughing children that see no value in the training. Every training session is the same. Parents dump off their rudely behaving children so they can have 90 minutes to engage in loud and ostentatious conversation in mandarin about their proud motherland in far east. The children chase each other on the training floor as if on a playground. The instructor puts all their effort on the students that participate in all performances and competitions. My honest and sincere recommendation is, stay away from this locust nest.

Having met and spoken with other wushu athletes and their families from across the country, the Omei school has established a reputation as one of the best wushu schools in the country. People from NJ, NY, MA, and MD come to this VA school to train. I have met people from the west coast who are trying to arrange a “vacation” to the area so their child can train at this school. Sifu Lu is an acknowledged expert in the field. She has an eagle eye that can catch and correct the smallest detail. This is what makes her students so formidable at competitions. There is a big difference between the beginner and advance classes. The students tend to be younger in the beginning class. They enjoy tag much more and actually get more of a work out than if they were just running laps to warm up. The school wants the children to enjoy wushu and they do. The beginner class is different from the advanced class where the class is more serious and rigorous. The school has students who do not compete or perform, but it is encouraged because this is how schools build their reputation. Nobody is forced to compete or perform. Conversely, if a beginner child wants to participate in a performance, she will find a way to adapt that child’s skill level into the performance in some way. Sifu Lu makes every effort to have the children feel included no matter the skill level.I have 2 children at this school. One likes to compete and the other doesn’t. But both enjoy taking classes here. One of the best things about this school is that former students who are now at college or in the workforce often return to visit and dispense advice and tips for the current students. The student camaraderie and support make this school stand out. I would definitely recommend this school to anyone interested in wushu.
