I went to one class and signed up for a year. That was a hasty decision including false pretenses. In my trial class, the owner/instructor told me to “do what I can!” In that class, I thought it was because I was new. Little did I know it was because I was a larger female. Throughout my time there:-I was asked publicly my weight with phrases like “I weigh 230, how much are you?.”-I was told if I didn’t do it, then he would force me to - and it could break my arm. (In regards to learning to throw someone over your shoulder)- I went in two times outside of class and asked for the comments to stop.- While there was a promotion for signing up and getting a free ghee, I was told that I had to buy one (for more than $100). If I did not buy the ghee then he would kick me out of class. I was not eligible for this promotion since I started before the promo. I did this and ordered the size picked by the instructor. When I put the ghee on, I could not bend over and touch my toes. I brought this to the owners attention and was told that I would have to buy new pants. He said “that’s the problem with fat women, they just don’t make these for them.” He then tried to sell me another kickboxing class to help me lose weight (not the first time he tried.) So he ordered me the wrong size, and then tried to exploit my size for more money. After that class, I decided to not return for more. I messaged through Facebook that I would not be returning. Don’t worry, he still got his money for every month left in the contract. The other instructors were great. I learned that I really loved jiujitsu and I will be looking for other chances to take classes in the future. They were patient and knowledgeable. The people in the class were kind and would sometimes check in me after the comments made by the owner.

AWESOME seminar last weekend! Great teachers with diverse techniques all geared toward true self defense...not sport. It was great to have so many different Martial Artist to work with in one room. Grandmaster Doc did an excellent job of teaching techniques and it was great to have so many high level senseis working those techniques with the attendees. It motivates me to continue on this journey of studying Martial Arts.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all that you have done for my children. They’ve been enrolled with you at Atemi-Ryu Jujitsu 2 years now and counting. During this time, I have watched them progress through different levels of jujitsu. Your ability to motivate the students is enviable. I have observed that this carried over into every aspect of their life. They put forth 100% in all they do whether it is academic or the sport. I respect you as an instructor. The courtesies that you portray before, during and after classes are not lost on your students. They emulate you in every day life. I appreciate the amount of patience and understanding that you show, especially with the younger students that need help. I thank you for the way in which you have built self-confidence in Blake and Kamryn. With each belt color they have matured and with that a feeling of self-esteem. Jujitsu is about self-control and defending yourself every day. I admire the way that you make the whole learning process fun and enjoyable. Thank you for being a role model for them. You are someone they genuinely respect and admire. At this dojo we are FAMILY! We are devoted to Atemi-Ryu Jujitsu and do not hesitate to recommend your dojo to all that inquire. Again, Thank you for your tireless efforts on behalf of my children!
