Passed my Instrument Check Ride today and it’s all thanks to Scott Best at OBX Flight.A week ago I had no idea how to read an approach plate. Today I am instrument rated. Scott Best of OBX flight walked me through the entire process of learning to fly in the clouds. As a emergency room PA, he could make more going to the hospital a few more days per month but instead he dedicates the 1-7th of every month to one IFR student. He is passionate about instrument flying. I actually saw him skip across the hanger after a busting out at minimums in a rain storm after dark. Not because he was happy to be on the ground but because he was happy to have such an awesome flight in the clouds. It was challenging at times but Scott never made me feel pressured or dumb. He never grabbed the controls away from me, but he was ever vigilant and gently reminded me what I needed to be doing. I logged 0 hours of sim time. We actually went up every day and flew dozens of approaches. I think we averaged 4 hours of flight time per day. The weather was terrible the first three days. Which was awesome because I got about 15 hours of actual IFR, with actual missed approaches and actual flight planning.I honestly can say that I feel prepared to fly in the clouds now. I just wish my plane was as perfect for IFR flying as his Warrior II. He calls it the duck, because it’s ugly. But as they say, beauty is only skin deep. The Duck flys amazingly and is perfectly equipped for IFR flying. (Garmin 430W, G5, autopilot, ADSB in/out.) The only downside is now I have to decide if I want to put ADSB in/out, a G5 or autopilot for my plane first. You can do the course in your plane if you choose. I decided to fly the Duck because for how little he charges, it didn’t make nearly enough sense to fly my plane to NC.If you have been putting off the instrument ticket for too long just like me, give him a call.
