I have done long term substitute teaching at Franklin for the last two years. I have found the school to be a positive place for students to learn and grow. The administrators are aware of the actions of middle school students and are fair in there dealings with the students. I love working there.

I am writing a very candid, in depth 12 month review of Franklin Middle School because I wish a real life experience had been reflected in the Google reviews before choosing to send my child here last school year. I checked the reviews before committing in 2015/16.Knowing what I know now I would never have sent my child to school there and would have exhausted charter options (since transfer seemed nearly impossible). Since leaving, we know of at least two other families that transferred to our current charter school and Im sure there are more.First and foremost I would like to say that there were many fantastic staff at the school. The problem did not seem to lie with staff but their inability to appropriately discipline problem students due to strict district guidelines. Thats just the issue: a large majority of the student body consists of students who appear to have a lack of parental support in the realm of academic and behavioral excellence and accountability. Thus, great teachers appear to be forced to lower the bar in favor of keeping an eye on the rampant delinquency.Reading and homework? Forget about it. No homework was a policy I considered supporting until I realized how low the sliding scale was being managed here. There is lots of work for us ahead this school year just to get back on track academically.I speculate, but some of this lack of caring and support appears to be due to the socioeconomic status of many district families in this area. Some is because English is being spoken as a second language at home for many members of the student body, thus communications about standards are surely being missed in a major way.Whatever the reason, the school has responded by doing things like allowing students to be on their cell phones during the day, talk back, act out, light fires in bathrooms, praise them for showing up halfway through the day, assault students in the hallways, with nary an expulsion on the schools record. Ive seen all examples personally just walking through the halls as a parent. The district doesnt seem to want delinquent students running free at home so they do everything they can to keep them in school and avoid the serious behavioral issues that plague them daily.Case and point: Last year, my child was being harassed by a particular student. It began verbally and escalated to stalking, physical harm which included, verbal abuse, shoving, and assaults with a backpack and later a pen. Though the school tried to contain the mess with a series of meetings with us and eventually short suspensions, never was a word spoken of expelling the student to get some help (a student who was also suffering numerous mental and emotional traumas at home, the horrific details of which were ultimately reported to another gov agency).Even after the school assured us that the issue was resolved, we continued to deal with this student but were told by the district that transfer was impossible. In closing, enroll your child with care here. I would highly suggest seeking an alternative if youre stuck with Franklin as your assigned district school. Dont put up with it for a full year like we did. They have issues that they need to resolve with the help of the district.A major overhaul is needed to get this school functioning the way my family members remember it in their childhood. I wish them luck and caution all families looking for their child to excel in this shakey academic environment--youre better off looking elsewhere at this time.

Many of the kids there simply do not care about their education and it seems that the teachers are getting that very same attitude but as a middle school student there myself, it was very easy to get good grades.
