Our young son started learning aikido at Beckham Martial Arts last summer, and he has absolutely loved it! Mr. Beckham is a great teacher. Hes firm with the students and maintains strict discipline, but hes patient and willing to work with the kids until they learn what they need to know. Taking our Daughter to Mr. Beckhams was one of the best things we ever did for her. As a young girl, we were looking for something that would build her confidence and at the same time allow her to defend herself should the need ever arise. We heard about several places and even talked to a few children who were black belts. Very soon we found out that some of these Karate-Type babysitting services might be fun, but were not the REAL DEAL! Children at age 8 and 9 walking around thinking that they were Black Belts could not even get out of a simple arm-bar. Mr. Beckham will actually TEACH your child how to defend themselves. One of the main reasons we began to be interested in sending our son to a martial arts school was because of our interest in finding a place that would partner with us as we help him grow in personal discipline and self-control. After the first couple sessions watching Joe work with the students, we knew we’d found the right place. Joe is very firm, but fair. He is a no-nonsense, black and white instructor. Respect is of highest value. If you’re looking for someone to coddle an unruly child, keep looking. Joe genuinely has a love for his students and sees deep value in what he does. We have seen significant change in our son since he’s been attending. Joe has partnered with us as we continue to teach our son the value of personal discipline, respect for others and himself. You must be serious and committed to making this a priority if you plan to join, because as Joe says, “ you only get out of it what you put into it”.

Mr. Beckham is a very positive yet demanding instructor and he holds himself to the same high standard as his students. If you are disrespectful to him, your parents, or others in the class - be prepared to be called out on it. Mr. Beckham is a martial arts master, and with more years of experience than I have been alive for, I trust him to teach me how to defend against an attacker. Mr. Beckham is an excellent instructor. He takes the art of self-defense seriously and expects students (and parents) to do the same. My 5-1/2 year old and 7-1/2 year old have been training with Mr. Beckham for the past year and I have seen great improvement in their skill, coordination, and strength.Mr. Beckham requires much from his students and is not shy to call a student out if they are goofing around and/or ignoring his instruction. My nine-year-old son has been a student at Beckham Martial Arts & Fitness for over two years. During this time he has been exposed to real-life scenarios that have prepared him for conflict at school and beyond. Joe is a skilled instructor and he demonstrates his passion for teaching youth on daily basis. I highly recommend Beckham Martial Arts. We have had 4 children, two boys and two girl, take Aikido from Joe Beckham. Their ages now are 27-16 and they each started at different ages: 11, 16, 14 and 8. Mr. Beckham is excellent with all age groups and is held in very high regard by his students. He teaches his students respect for authority, country and self; personal responsibility; humility; leadership; and self confidence along with self defense. This martial art is no game and not about going out and picking a fight, but about being aware of your surroundings and having the ability to protect yourself in many different scenarios.

I started off wanting to do martial arts because I thought it would be fun. I was 8 years old at the time and started when I was 9 years old. After a while in the class, I learned what it was really about. This school is a great place to learn practical self-defense and just about every self-word there is. Self-respect, self-esteem, self-discipline, etc. My fellow peers are a pleasure to work with and support you if you make a mistake. Also, the assistant instructors are great, and they teach classes Monday and Tuesday (last I recalled). They are a great help to Mr. Beckham who may be strict and have high standards, but he truly is a great instructor who cares. Although I may not be able to attend class every week, I do enjoy it immensely!

My sons and I both trained with master Beckham and he is an incredible sansei and very professional in how he conducts his school. I highly recommend his school for any adult or child. His children’s program is excellent and I appreciate the Christian teaching, patriotism, and virtues he instills in the kids. Also a great place for women to learn street ready self/defense.

Joe Beckham is a serious man and a gifted teacher with a generous heart. I signed my son up for classes 9 months ago after investigating several other studios, and have only grown more impressed with BMAF over the course of his first year of study.Mr. Beckham is demanding with the children -- he is, after all, educating them to live in a world that is a demanding place. He obviously cares for them and delights in their progress. He takes the children seriously, treating all of them as if they can and will learn what he has to teach, if only they will listen and practice.His older students are frequently present to help with class, and are profoundly loyal to him, which tells you everything you need to know.My wife and I try hard to surround our children with those rare people who exemplify human excellence. Mr. Beckham is one of them. My only regret is that I dont have time to sign up for classes for myself.

Only reason I don’t still attend these classes is because i moved to a different state. Mr. Beckham is a great man and friend and his teachings are the best I have ever seen. I began training under Joe about 12 years ago and I have known and worked with him closely on and off since then. I consider him a friend. He is an exceptional man and instructor. You would do well to attend his school.

My son (12 years old) has been attending for approximately 4 months. My son has not done great in school and has focus issues. My son wasnt really interested in many sports so we thought this might be a good life skill and area to develop. However, he has found purpose and direction coming to Beckham Martial Arts. The owner/instructor (Mr. Joe Beckham) is an amazing instructor. He knows how to teach children and adults alike. He not only teaches self defense but also teaches students the ability to show respect, focus and have self worth. Every time I take my son to class I cannot keep watching the process Mr. Beckham takes with these students. Mr. Beckhams primary teaching is self defense. There are children from 4-13 (kids classes) and then some children that are advanced in the adults class. There is no competition and no fighting. Its practice drills and instruction only. (This was a question I had in the beginning not knowing what to expect). Its twice a week for 1 hour and 1st and 3rd Saturdays. The price is more than reasonable and I cant believe that we were able to find such an amazing instructor on our first try. We originally saw the banner outside that said We teach Christian values (banner is now gone) but Mr. Beckham said that someone stole it (ironic). Mr. Beckham is a first class man and wonderful instructor for all age groups. I personally plan to take the class myself once I can adjust my personal schedule.

While I am not a student of Beckham Martial Arts I have had many interactions with his students and Mr. Beckham in joint martial arts seminars. He has hosted some of the seminars at his Dojo. I Always look forward to being able to get a lesson from Mr. Beckham and getting to work with his students.There’s a rule of thumb you will find is true more often than not that states, “Every organization takes on the character of it’s leader.” And Beckham Martial Arts & Fitness is no exception. My son is a naturally happy and sweet boy. However, in the past several years, he had some heart-breaking experiences. His countenance changed and his enthusiasm for life diminished. It is the only martial arts facility I would recommend anyone of any age train in.Un-Abridged Version: I am 33 years old and have three children, ages 10, 8, and 6 - the eldest is a boy and the younger are girls. We all train at Beckham Martial Arts. I have also attended a self-defense class [structured specifically for females to learn self-defense tactics] taught by Mr. Beckham. Mr. Beckham is knowledgeable and practiced in mixed martial arts, pathophysiology, body mechanics, and teaching all ages. He emphasizes safety by awareness and self-preparedness through advancing knowledge, discipline, and practice. He incorporates life principles and applications into his teaching which is especially beneficial reinforcement for my children. Camaraderie, smiles, and laughter are a part of every class as well. In a society that is increasingly dangerous for our youth [particularly] and the population at large, and which has a deficit of discipline and self-control, having these values taught and reinforced in an environment outside of the home is invaluable.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. These are the words I remember well from March 1, 1996, when I stepped onto the mat for my first class with Mr. Beckham. I had spent over a month visiting other schools/dojos, and I am still confident I made the right choice. Along with all of his instructors, Mr. Beckham isnt about teaching you to fight or simply putting a black belt around your waist. He cares about you as a student, and more so, as a person. Martial skill is only a part of what you receive in BMAF classes. Mr. Beckham will challenge you physically, martially, and personally. His character and values will motivate you to be the best martial artist and person you can be. I simply cannot recommend him more highly.

I started training with Mr. Beckham fresh out of college and it was one of the best experiences in my life. I say was because I live too far away now to train regularly. If I still lived in Greenville, I would be there 3 or more times a week. After training with him for 8+ years, Ive never been able to find another dojo or instructor who shows the kind of respect, intensity, character, and understanding that he showed me during a very impressionable time in my life. He has been a great mentor both on and off the mat.

I recently started classes at Beckham Martial Arts on Stone Ave. and Ive found that Mr. Beckham really cares about his students and teaching them to be able to defend their selves. I highly recommend this Dojo over the rest in the Upstate area.

Our daughter was accosted in downtown Greenville. She was very upset with herself more than with the guy who accosted her. She knew she should have refused to purchase rolling papers for him (he was under age, she wasn’t) but she acquiesced and she called us afterward mad at the world.We signed her up the next day to Joe’s class. My husband was a Greenville Police Officer and he had studied under Joe many years ago that helped him at a weight of 150 pounds (then) bring down violent men outweighing him by 50,60,70 pounds safely. Wrist locks, joint locks and grappling techniques work very well. Craig, my husband, knew this and we wanted Jessie to know it.Boy what a difference it made. She went from a kid beating herself up over being intimidated into buying rolling papers for a male younger than her, into a bit more than a year later signing up to be a US Marine.She just graduated today from her MOS school. She had to endure a great deal at Parris Island and at Marine Corps Training at Camp Lejeune NC. What she learned at Beckham Martial Arts gave her the confidence in herself to take on these challenges.

More than a dojo!I have two boys now 16 & 13. A couple of years ago I was looking for a place where we could gain self defense skills together and where I could have a structured environment for better health. We visited several dojos. There was something I liked about each, but as soon as I met Joe Beckham, I knew we found the right place. It has been nothing but positive. As a parent it gives me more confidence knowing my boys are better prepared to defend themselves should the need ever arise. Much more than that, I know being involved has helped strengthen their character and reinforced the values we want to represent as a family.

Mr. Beckham has always been kind and patient while teaching. He has always been more interested in helping me perfect the technique that I’m doing, as opposed to hurrying me along and making me test for another belt. Incredible dojo. Not only are great self defense skills tought but character and principles are as well. Highly recommend for children, very good lessons can be learned for them. (Adults as well) Hands down best martial arts dojo around!!

I have been a student of Mr. Beckhams for over 20 years. First studying with him in Spartanburg and Greenville S.C. Subsequent of that, I continued to study and learn with him through numerous moves due to my work. Mr. Beckham has traveled to my location and I back to the Carolinas to continue my journey with him. I have been training at Beckham Martial Arts Since March of 2013. Mr. Beckham is a 7th Degree Black Belt sanctioned by one of the top martial arts instructors in Europe. What I love about the school is that some of the best techniques from multiple styles of martial arts are taught in what is called Nihon Goshin Aikido. I have become proficient in Judo, Aikido, Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Aiki Jiu Jitsu, weapons training and much more. Nihon Goshin Aikido has evolved over the last 30 years. What means the most to me is that Mr. Beckham has made his version of Nihon Goshin Aikido street ready. The techniques that are being taught actually work on the street should you be in a situation where you need to defend yourself. Some versions or previous versions of Nihon Goshin Aikido being taught are less progressive and still incorporate many techniques that look great in a dojo, but arent practical in real-life. Beckham Martial Arts is the real deal. During my tenure, I have had the honor of earning my 1st and 2nd degree black belt under Beckham Sensei. I am also pleased to say that Mr. Beckham is a born again believer in Jesus Christ and the values that are being taught in the school are those that represent my own. Beckham Martial Arts & Fitness has been a great experience for my children. I have twins, a boy and a girl, who have participated for 1 and 1/2 years now. At 6 years old they have gained so much from these classes. They not only started down the path to learn the basics of self defense, but have learned discipline, respect and the value of hard work as both have received their yellow belts.The best part though is that the kids love it!! I never have to encourage them to attend the classes. They just want to go. This has been a wonderful experience for both kids.There are no hidden or extra expenses for their classes.
