For awhile me and the wife were looking at a place where my daughter could grow and learn. Everyone at the Dojo has been awesome! They teach manners, they work with the parents, they teach discipline, and better than that they have fun. My daughter has grown leaps and bounds since day one there. She looks forward to going and misses it when we are away. Kyoshi Hobson and his black belts are hands some of the best that I have been around. I did karate when I was younger and if I would have had the same experience and teachers, I would probably still be doing it. Whether or not my daughter keeps it up is not an issue because of all the life lessons she is learning and how she is growing. Thank you.

My son has been actively involved in Martial Acts for over two years. We moved to the Hampton Roads area from GA looking for a great place for him to continue his practice and based on the reviews we chose this place. He loved it here. The instructor are great and he thrived under their instructions but once we moved out of the area (Maryland) we attempted to cancel the contract because it was not possible for him to continue training 3 hours away. We called and sent email without response. We got letters from their billing department when they hadn’t even started back training. We were held to standards that is not even within the contract like “we must give a 30 day written notice to withdrawal” or we will be bill for that period.Basically in a nutshell, they started out awesome, the instructors are awesome, the whole experience was awesome but I have come to learn they have shady business practices and I would BEWARE if you are considering this location.

A Hidden Gem in Hampton Roads! As a military family, its always challenging moving to a new town, finding a routine, and trying to fit in. We found Brian Hobson Karate Studio through word of mouth, and started with our free trial class. From the moment we walked in the dojo, we knew we were right at home! The owner, Brian Hobson, is a charismatic Kyoshi who teaches with a combination of humor, discipline, and the type of guidance that children (and adults) need. He is also a world-class athlete and highly-decorated karate champion. The studio follows the Okinawan Shorin-Ryu karate style, which focuses on fluid movements and flexible positions with a solid structure, creating powerful moves. The students learn a variety of skills, starting with the basic positions through weapons mastery. Precision of movement is a large focus of the class, and katas (structured practice routines) become second-nature for the students. Its amazing to watch how many different katas even the youngest students are able to master! My sons favorite, though, is kumite where the students put the moves they learn into action by fighting against opponents. I have to admit that this is my favorite to watch as well, mostly because I have seen my sons confidence soar. The more he practices his katas, the better he becomes at kumite. The Dojo would not be what it is without the amazing senseis! They range in age and in levels of black belts, but they all serve the dojo with such enthusiasm and genuine love of teaching karate. They care about the students and truly want them to succeed, working with them to overcome their weaknesses and bringing out the best in them without intimidation or fear.During competitions with other Dojos, I always feel lucky to be with Brian Hobson Karate Studio. Our students moves are clean, crisp, and they fight fairly and correctly. They cheer for each other, they help each other out, and they WIN!I am truly grateful for having found this studio. We will miss it dearly when we go to our next base, but we know that our son has gotten the best foundation for continuing on his karate journey!

If you are looking for a positive outlet for your child, a way to counter balance any negatives in your childs life---movies...video games...etc...or just because your child wants to learn cool ninja stuff. Brian Hobson Karate Studio is definitely your answer. My 8 year old son is a student here and karate has done wonders for him. Its really amazing to see the change in his attitude. He has learned confidence, respect, discipline, focus, social skills, responsibility and self defense. He is so excited about karate he can hardly wait each day until the next class.Kyoshi Hobson is a 9th degree Black Belt and a National Champion. He teaches a traditional Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate. Kyoshis dedication and his outstanding training methods will help your child reach his or her maximum potential and become a Champion. Kyoshi Hobson and the Senseis are truly the best in the sport. They take quality very seriously and their students are receiving the highest level in curriculum and technique. Whether the goal is competition, getting in shape or just having fun, this dojo will help them in accomplishing their goal. The students progress is marked from beginner (white belt) through a variety of colors to (black belt). Testing for each new belt is a rewarding and challenging exercise in achieving their goal. The students also practice hard to attend competitions. These competitions are very professional and exciting. Your child will use their learned skills to compete against other karate dojos. They will learn how to perform under pressure, how to win and lose with good sportsmanship and return to the dojo the following day and be even more determined to improve themselves. They also learn to count and speak in Japanese. Games are also incorporated into the classes to make them fun. You wont find a better positive outlet for your child or yourself anywhere. All the students thrive and love it here. Karate in this Dojo ...Begins and Ends with Respect!Brian Hobson Karate Dojo also have classes for teens and adults. The classes are very high energy and very exciting. This is the Dojo for you. Brian Hobson Karate is the best studio in Hampton roads! Brian and all his excellently trained instructors are committed to authentic Japanese teaching. The kids flourish and excel under Brians direction...and have fun while doing it. We have been with Brian Hobson 4+ years and it is amazing to see children begin with no skill -and often times very shy; after one (1) month you can see drastic contrast! The children are confident, respectful and practicing karate moves like champs! I also love the encouragement every child receives fron all instructors. There is a dedication to discipline and respect that is so refreshing yet unique in 2018! I Highly recommend this studio and truly believe it is the best around.

If you are looking for a karate studio then look no further. Whether it is for yourself or your child. Its never too late to begin karate as a new physical challenge. Martial arts foster lifelong growth that is mental, physical and spiritual in nature. As karate becomes a way of life, your life begins a transformation that will amaze you.I was forty eight years of age when I first came to the Brian Hobson karate studio with a question, What is karate all about? Every class at the dojo was different, new, interesting, and challenging. And with Kyoshi Brian Hobsons guidance, at the age of 50 I earned a Black belt.Brian Hobson takes time to make you feel welcome and comfortable. He has a way of making parents and kids feel at home. He truly cares about and gets to know each person in his classes. Also, with amazing amounts of patience, energy, leadership, and commitment to teaching the art of karate, he is able to maintain respect in a fun and friendly environment. In short, he uses karate as a vehicle to teach you how to be a better person. So, it doesnt matter how old you are, or what level of fitness you currently possess, you will fit right in! Of all the Dojos I have trained, this Dojo is by far and away the very best. The tradition of the system, the understanding of the subject, application and history is beyond what one can expect today in the karate industry. No one works harder to insure the success of each and every person than the instructors in this dojo, no one. The study of karate is multidimensional, encompassing the study of technique, application and understanding. Here these are taught by all instructors to all students everyday. What makes this dojo different? Caring... and the results show this.

My 11 year-old daughter started taking classes here in November 2017. She was invited by her friend to attend the classes for free for 4-weeks. Needless to say she’s still here and she absolutely love it. Since starting taking classes, I’ve seen her cinfidence increase. She absolutely love coming to class. Brian and all of the instructors are great. They take the team to teach the kids. Their patience with the kids is clearly demonstrated in the classes. They have extensive knowledge of the different techinques and they share this with the kids. The class is fun yet challenging for the kids. I love this dojo because they are teaching the kids more than karate. They take the time to learn about each of the students and they really care for the students on and off the dojo mat. I am happy that we joined this dojo. I’m excited to watch my daughter learn and move up the ranks. Come and check them out.

Brian Hobson Karate Studio is, without a doubt, one of the best dojos in the state. I first came to the dojo while looking for a place that would help my son develop his focus and discipline, and have received so much more than that in return. Over the past three years, Ive seen my son thrive in an environment that you simply cant replicate anywhere else. He has gained so much self-confidence while developing his focus and skills, and has gone on to win medals in all of the tournaments hes participated in so far. Brian Hobson Karate Studio has helped my son excel both inside and outside of the dojo; the discipline and values instilled in him here also show in his schoolwork, other sports, and his day-to-day life. This dojo has done so much for my son that I also enrolled my youngest son once he turned five years old, and later enrolled myself. They also host several workshops throughout the year, like womens self-defense, that my family and friends have also attended. My family loves this dojo, and yours will too!

My son and I both attend classes at this dojo.My son’s review (he’s 8 years old): “I like karate because I like the kicks. They’re fun.” For a kid, that might be enough. My review, both as a parent of a karate student, and as a student myself: the level of instruction across age levels is very high. Kyoshi Hobson and his black belts are knowledgeable and motivating. They hold each student accountable for their very best effort and focus. For the kids classes, especially, the level of mastery expected and achieved across the board is higher than any of the other area dojos I have heard about or experienced myself as a spectator at competitions. Competitions are encouraged for their benefits to students’ confidence levels and preparations, but students are able to progress at their own pace regardless of competition participation. The adult class students are held to the same level of accountability, and are motivated to improve our fitness and flexibility each and every day. For me, especially, the focus on improving flexibility is sorely needed. I particularly enjoy the “be better than you were yesterday” philosophy. My family first learned of this dojo because a friend from our church trained here and became a black belt. I feel fortunate that we were introduced to this dojo family because my son and I have very much enjoyed learning, sweating, and especially kicking.

First of All, Let me say why Ive taken the time out to write this review. I honestly believe Brian Hobsons Karate Class is something I wish everyone could experience just once. If your looking for an outlet for your child or even for yourself... The classes are so exciting and so high energy. Even if your just watching, it gives you a sense of confidence and pride. Our Grandson came to birthday party here for one of the students and thats where we realized Wow ... How awesome is this and our Grandson could not stop talking about it. Soon afterwards we signed him up and he has just blossomed from there. He absolutely loves it. Comes 4 to 5 times a week. Hes been here about a year and a half and the change in his attitude is amazing. His self confidence, his respect for others, his strength his focus and much more has improved immensely. Kyoshi Hopson (Top Notch All The Way). He trains champions here and you can see it in the students faces during class. They want to succeed. They want to be the best they can be. They really love and respect him. All the Senseis (Also Top Notch). They take their training seriously. The Dojo has classes for wee little ones to adults. The students work so hard and even several times a year go to Karate Competitions. Some local, some out of state. In 2016 The Olympics decided to recognize Karate as an official Olympic Sport. Karate will be in the 2020 Games in Tokoyo. How exciting is that!!!Best Life Decision our family has made for our Grandson so far to join this Dojo. All it takes is that first lesson, or even come in to watch. Youll be hooked, just like we were.

Choosing Brian Hobson Karate Studio was the best decision I made! My son Jonathan loves it so much, even though, he initially didnt. The senseis do not only teach karate to the kids, but also respect of others. They dont play around, they push kids to do their very best! Periodically they play games the kids enjoy. Kiyoshi Hobson loves when the kids do their best, but he really loves good grades. Jonathan had his share of doing well in many tournaments, but best of all he has started to care about his grades and his attitude toward school! Brian just opened up a new dojo in the Yorktown/Grafton area. If you live in this area, take advantage of what BHKS has to offer.

I started taking classes from Kyoshi Brian Hobson when I retired from the Navy 13 years ago.His classes are extremely well-run and structured around the growth of the student. Every student is encouraged to progress at a pace that is right for them. He also leads and inspires all his instructors to be the best they can be which benefits the students even more. Now I am a third degree black belt and much more confident in my ability to defend myself and I am still having a blast along the way!!If you want to be able to protect yourself, this is the best place to gain those skills in a supportive environment. If you are into fitness and tired of the same gym routines, this will keep your mind active as well as your body. If you want to win tournaments, Kyoshi will make sure you are ready. Problems with coordination? This is where you get individual attention from terrific instructors on how to make your moves faster, cleaner and more effective.During my black belt journey I checked out several other martial arts schools and was simply not as impressed as I have been with Kyoshi Hobson. He is a natural teacher who is completely dedicated to his craft and genuinely cares about each of his students personally. Every time I needed to talk to him about my progress he made himself available and gave me as much time and attention as it took to make sure I was back on the path that worked for me. Where else can you get individual expert coaching in traditional Okinawan karate and have fun doing it?This is it!Come and watch a class, talk to Kyoshi or one of his other instructors, talk to a student or parent, sign up for the intro, do yourself a favor and get started!

I have been studying with Kyoshi Brain Hobson since 2000. Having trained at a couple of other karate dojos before coming to Brian, I can honestly say he has one of the best programs for not only learning about karate and the martial arts but mastering it. I have really enjoyed my time with the school. Kyoshi Hobson is very well known and respected across the karate community, both here in the states and in Okinawa. High ranking and knowledgeable sensei (instructors) are constantly stopping by to say hi and train/teach with him. Which is a huge benefit of being at this dojo. His program is comprehensive. Weather you are looking at karate for self-defense, discipline for your kids, bully protection, tournaments and competitions, or even just to get into shape, he have something for everyone. I am very proud to be one of his black belt and will continue to train with him as long as I can.

I enrolled in the karate course offered at Thomas Nelson Community College and enjoyed it so much that I enrolled at the Dojo. At first I was scared to even take the Karate class. Three years prior I had injured my knees and back in an accident, though I had recovered, the doctors told m e that I would not be able to walk properly or be able to do any physical activity well because of the damage to my nerves and tendons.I took the course and though I struggled at first, the instructors were encouraging, never making fun of me. Even though when I started I couldnt do more than 3 proper push ups, they would tell me, come, one more good on, you got it.Every Sensei (teacher) at the Dojo has thorough understanding the martial art form of Karate and do well in instructing others. They do not teach through goading and humiliation, but instill a sense of confidence and mutual respect to all, no matter what rank or if you are a student or teacher.I can never fully express to the instructors and Kyoshi Brian Hobson how grateful I am that they did not give up on me and were willing to teach and encourage me to better myself. I highly recommend them to who wants to better themselves mentally and physically.

I signed up for a semester of Karate at Thomas Nelson Community College just to pick up a quick PE credit where Kyoshi Hobson was my instructor. I enjoyed the class so much that I visted the dojo, watched and participated in a few classes, got inspired and when the semester was over I had begun to take it seriously enough to sign up as a member at the dojo. What made me comfortable with spending the money to become a member (which is very reasonable and right in line with the cost of any other type of specialty gym membership such as cross fit) is that Kyoshi is an excellent teacher and I was sure that if I was willing to put in the time and effort, Id have great instruction and even encouragement to support the journey. Some people are masters at what they do, but are not able to instruct. It is a horrible experience to be ignorant about a subject, then have someone make you feel stupid for not knowing what it is youre trying to learn. There is also nothing more refreshing than being ignorant about a subject, then having someone who is passionate about that subject influence you to be just as engaged as they are. Those are 2 huge components that comprise good teaching.Needless to say, this same spirit of teaching can be seen in all our senseis, which is what encourages me to keep coming. Not only that, but I appreciate how all the black belts have their own twist on explaining certain things, remembering things, different techniques that theyve applied to their own particular learning styles and this is truly conducive to the diverse environment at Brian Hobson Karate Studio.ALSO fun fact: as someone who suffers from anxiety and panic attacks, Ive found that various forms of repetition can be relaxing. It is the rhythm of repetition that calms the mind. Though the craft itself can be physically taxing due to the intensity required to achieve those crisp, sharp, precise movements, the repetitious rhythm required to achieve those same movements is soothing. So, being required to practice a movement or series of movements over and over and over until its precise (which is what Kyoshi Hobson and our senseis constantly go after) it is not only therapeutic, but it increases focus, personal discipline, and is a sure way to master this form of art..which is, in my personal opinion, a tremendous ongoing accomplishment. If you experience anxiety, just try it. Youll also find that the physical exertion releases endorphins which promote positive feelings. Youll find me and thank me 😁👌🏾I enjoy the place and am proud to be apart of it.

I have been trying to post a review but Windows 10 will not work with Google. I previously posted one on yelp. I had been looking for a KARATE school that was traditional and strict about authenticity. Watching the classes here was like a breath of fresh air, as the other DoJos I researched were sorely lacking in their curriculum and instruction methods. I enrolled my grandson Ziyreeh that day. The Senseis and Sempais are the best. Kyoshi Hobson is the most experienced and skilled KARATE Instructor I have had the pleasure and Honor to know. I would recommend this KARATE School to anyone serious about learning Traditional Okinawan Karate. Come take the introductory class and you will stay as a full time student.
