I was referred to Karen Sussman by my otolaryngologist due to vocal cord paralysis. Due to COVID our visits were virtual. They were just as good as being person to person in an office setting. Karen evaluated my voice and had a program of recovery designed just for me. I found her to be very responsive to my questions, which she answered thoroughly . I could sense a genuine concern. She gave me tips which would give my voice volume and clarity; as well as daily exercises . PLUS.. Karen’s bubbly personality doesn’t make the lesson a weekly chore. I highly recommend Karen Sussman.

I found Karen through another singer who she helped. I have learned how to warm up, not scream, how to treat my voice so I can avoid the sore throats and surgery. If you are a singer, voice artist or just someone who talks for a living, one of your secret weapons should be some time learning from her. In addition she is one of the coolest people you will meet! Karen Sussman, Professional Voice Care Center is THE BEST. I started studying with Karen in 1994 and had lessons once a week for years. She improved my voice. People think that all you do is open your mouth and sing. I learned not only how to correctly warm up my voice, but what to eat or drink before any performance. You are technically an athlete and your vocal chords must be warmed up properly. So thank you Karen for all that you have taught me to get me through performances.

I was referred to Karen Sussman by an ENT doctor at Memorial Sloan Kettering. I went to her Office in February 2020 and started to work with her but unfortunately COVID-19 struck and I was not able to go to the office but had instead virtual visits. Karen is wonderful to work with. She showed me many techniques that helped my voice tremendously. After 10 visits, I went to see another ENT doctor to determine whether I needed more voice therapy, he examined me and stated that he thought my voice was sounding very good and Karen had done a wonderful job. I will continue doing what I learned from Karen. You would not go wrong with Karen’s techniques, she is wonderful to work with and she has such a pleasant personality.

I lost my voice from a flu-like virus; the unusual part was that it did not return after I recovered. Thus began a string of appointments to my doctor and various specialists for tests and medications for GERD, etc. I was told I was lucky my vocal cords were not paralyzed from the virus- I did not know that was possible. Nothing helped restore my voice, and since much of my work is verbal, I was incredibly stressed.I began ‘forcing’ out what little sound I could, using my false vocal cords. The result was a very low, rough, breathy voice that couldn’t be understood easily and a throat that felt scraped raw at all times.I was finally referred to Karen Sussman at Professional Voice Care to retrain my vocal cords to function normally. I had high expectations, as several doctors I trusted recommended that I see her, and one had gone to her for treatment himself for the same condition I had. She told me I would have my voice back in approximately 10 sessions. It took 11 sessions until I ‘graduated’, but I FINALLY HAVE MY VOICE BACK AFTER LOSING IT FOR 7.5 MONTHS!I told her I would work hard, and I did. She allowed me to record our sessions, so I could review them and not miss tips. During each session, she would evaluate my progress, introduce new processes for me to try, and give me a plan of action for the coming week. As expected, there were some setbacks, and Karen would simply find another way to support the issue.I had to adjust my very busy schedule to accommodate my new ‘vocal hygiene’ routine, and I practiced my exercises several times each day. I had to do the work to regain my voice, but Karen gave me the road map to get there. Now I know how to support my voice, and how to get back on track if it starts to deteriorate. If you have any vocal issues, want to learn good protective vocal hygiene, or simply want to learn to improve your speaking or singing voice, I urge you to go to Professional Voice Care! Karen Sussman is wonderful, and her staff was very accommodating.Go. Now. Your voice is important.

I was referred to Karen after learning that I required vocal cord surgery for the removal of a polyp. Karen and her team were kind enough to take me on as a patient just prior to my surgery. This enabled me to become familiar with the exercises and type of therapy that I would expect post-surgery(a very large advantage). One week after surgery(no speaking at all), I began my weekly(6 weeks) therapy with Karen. At present, I am fully recovered and am prepared to return to my life as a performing singer/musician. Without hesitation, I can state that my sessions with Karen were critical in my recovery and that I would not have the knowledge, tools and confidence if not for my time at PVCC.Karen is an unabashed and enthusiastic purveyor of proper singing and speaking technique whose dedication to the craft will be quite apparent to any and all who make the correct decision to employ her services. My time with Karen ensured me a proper recovery from surgery and an enhanced knowledge on how to prepare, preserve and utilize my voice to a higher level. Thanks, Karen!

I officially graduated from voice therapy today, and I can’t believe how far I’ve come. I went to Karen after learning that I had a vocal cyst on my right vocal fold. I am a teacher and professional singer so I rely heavily on my voice for my income. I literally couldn’t sing any longer as my diplophonia made me sound like I was singing in five part harmony by myself. I had terrible neck pain and it was hard to speak by the end of the day. She introduced me to my surgeon and he performed surgery on June 29. Once I was allowed to talk, I was so scared by the quality of my voice. I worked with Karen and she gave me the tools to slowly strengthen and learn how to sing again. Ten weeks later I am a new person! I can’t ever repay her for giving me my life back. I can work all day and sing a four hour gig without much effort. The quality of my speaking and singing voice is clear and consistent. You HAVE to listen to what she tells you to do. Her work is only as good as your effort. If you follow her explicit instructions, you will recover and be better than ever. I will take her exercises and strategies with me for the rest of my life. My 15 year old son, who is a performer, was referred to Karen Sussman by more than one well regarded medical professional in the ENT and Laryngology field for some potential voice issues. Luckily, there were no major issues and Karen was a big part of putting our minds at ease in that regard. My son continued with Karen for vocal training to improve his singing voice and to learn techniques that would ensure he didnt harm his voice with bad habits. With Karens pleasant, humorous and easy-going style, he learned quickly and the techniques have really stuck with him. He has had a few different vocal coaches prior to Karen, but she opened up a whole other level of though and process to help him enrich his voice. None of his other coaches come close to the technical expertise that Karen imparts on so many levels not only to enhance but to care for the voice. With her assistance, my son successfully auditioned for and then portrayed Mark Cohen in RENT. He caught the attention of an agent who represents youth talent in NY, LA, Chicago and Atlanta. Needless to say, life is, unexpectedly, very busy. We are thankful to Karen. I was given a diagnosis. A cyst on my left vocal cord and trauma from it hitting my right vocal cord. I couldnt talk and was hoarse every day. There was only two ways my problem would be solved. The first, surgery. The second, voice therapy. I decided to try voice therapy. After multiple unsuccessful voice sessions with one therapist, I became unmotivated and scared that surgery was going to be my only option... especially when I went for a check and the cyst was still there. Then, my doctor recommended Professional Voice Care Center. I met Karen Sussman, and my life literally changed. After the third session, while doing the exercises she recommended, my voice already started sounding better, I started to see a difference and fast. I was talking properly and didnt feel any more pain. After my fourth session, my cyst was gone and my voice was set free in a way. It was if I never had a problem in the first place. I sounded just like my old self and since then I have been continuously going to Karen to keep up with my training and to make sure it doesnt happen again. The only way to get what you want is to work at it and try incredibly hard. I without a doubt recommend Karen Sussman to help your voice in any capacity... whether its for a cyst, to learn to sing, to learn how to speak properly again, or whatever your situation may be. How many ways can I thank you? Your singing lessons are more than I could have ever imagined. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself and your extensive knowledge in each of our sessions. I feel truly blessed to have found you, for only in a short period of time I have gained confidence in my vocal abilities and have learned so much more about breath control, flexibility, and all sorts of exercises to prepare me prior to any performance. The space that you create in your studio is both relaxed and serious at the same time, which is exactly what I was looking for. The only negative thing I have to say is that I wish I had found you years ago!Linda Sussman, singer/songwriter

Karen has helped me regain the use of my speaking voice by teaching me several techniques, easy to learn and use at home, to relax my vocal cords and neck muscles. Its a miracle, nobody else knew how to help me.

Beyond receiving nearly six years of brilliant training from Karen Sussman and the Professional Voice Care Center, working with Karen has turned me into a better artist and a better person. Five NYSSMA solos, countless audition songs and more than half a decade of training later, it was Karens training that helped give me confidence in my voice as a singer, songwriter and performer. Recently, I made my Feinsteins/54 Below debut as a singer/songwriter, and having Karens genius guide me--from breaking thy body armor to understanding the musical journey of a song--has made all the difference as a musical storyteller. At this point, almost the entire Recce clan has made their way into the hallowed halls of her studio--and heres hoping they too will be added to the list of notable alumni--because with training from Karen, its impossible not to end up on her list of revered alum!

My daughter is an aspiring stage performer and was referred to The Professional Voice Care Center by her ENT due to some issues with her singing voice. After a few sessions, she learned essential exercises and techniques that improved her ability to sing without harming her vocal chords.. Karen Sussman is extremely professional and knowledgeable. I would recommend The Professional Voice Care Center to anyone looking for a therapist that specializes in voice care

I am a busy mom of three young teens and have enjoyed singing competitively in a barbershop style quartet and chorus for over 20 years. Although I prided myself in knowing a thing or two about good vocal production after many years of singing successfully ( and a masters in speech pathology to boot!) I fell victim to a vocal polyp in 2013. I was shocked and devastated at the news. I thought my singing days were over! Fortunately, my ENT recommended Karen for help! I attended a few months of intense vocal therapy. I found Karen to be extremely well-versed in all matters related to the voice, be it speaking or singing. She helped me understand and adopt new, healthier vocal choices for myself. Her exercises and suggestions were very practical. Coupled with her friendly demeanor and professionalism, therapy was a pleasure! I recommended Karen to several friends of mine who also benefitted from her expertise. I took her lessons to heart and applied nearly everything she recommended to try, and made it my own. I made many changes to my daily routine, which proved beneficial to my overall health, too! This week, four years after my initial diagnosis, I learned I am polyp free! My ENT could not believe it! (I was actually there to discuss surgery!) My vocal folds looked much healthier on the video, and my voice is getting stronger every day, with continued work! Thank you Karen Sussman for your compassionate care and knowledge. I feel like a new person!

I have been training at the Professional Voice Care Center for three years, and it has been absolutely amazing! Karen is the BEST! I started as a little middle schooler with a good voice, but I needed to learn how to use it properly, and allow it to grow. I walked in on my first day, and felt so welcomed by Karens warm and fun demeanor. Through the years, my voice has grown tremendously. I have a more mature tone, better diction, better breath support, better technique, better interpretation, and most importantly I have learned how to take care of my instrument. I have also improved upon my sight singing, and a general understanding of music theory. With Karens guidance, I have played several leads in musicals, been in All County many times, auditioned for professional productions, learned extremely difficult arias, and many more. Overall, I have grown so much as a singer and performer. I am so thankful for her dedication and support. I would love to see others have the same positive experience I have had. I am eager to continue my journey at the Professional Voice Care Center. Thanks so much Karen!-Gabrielle Bieder

Ive had different health struggles in my young life, and very few people who, despite the hardships I had to face, never gave up on me. Thats how I feel about Karen. Shes one of them people, or who I call my secret angels among other people. In 2015, I was diagnosed with Vocal Cord Dysfunction after many terrible episodes (one including an embarrassing hospital visit, after collapsing at my college), and many people who failed to diagnose me, and I began speech therapy at Professional Voice Care Center. Not only was (and is) Karen very friendly, understanding, supportive, and professional, but her kindness, encouragement, and motivation gave me the strength to progress and overcome my VCD, which, before my diagnosis, I felt was nearly impossible to overcome. Karen, through her great character, has also helped me reach colossal milestones in overcoming what I call the great degree of my muscle tension dysphonia, which I was diagnosed with this January of 2017. Prior to my diagnosis, my symptoms caused myself and everyone around me to suspect acid reflux (mainly because of the constant burning sensation I felt in my throat), but if it werent for my new ENT, Ron Mitzner, I wouldnt have reunited with Karen for help again, so Im also grateful for him too. Ive been in speech therapy for just a little over 3 months, and, Im already about to graduate! My hoarseness problem has improved 97%, with that occasional 3% annoyance that returns sometimes, I have no more burning sensations or pain in my neck, my vocal range (because Im also a singer) has mostly been restored (with vocal warm ups and more weeks of doing my therapy exercises, I anticipate for the rest of my range to return), and a HUGE burden has been lifted off of me, thanks to Karen, who is officially my one and only favorite speech therapist!!!! Sometimes, Im shy in expressing how I feel about how thankful I am for certain people in my life, but Im glad to be expressing it now, and I believe that my success will make all the difference to people who are still struggling. Dont give up if there is still hope left for your recovery. Karen is one of the hopes out there! :)

Karen was able to provide my son with the strategies he needed on order to not only protect his vocal chords, but also with techniques that he uses on a daily basis.
