Having just cruised around town to all the major private gyms, I can say confidently Penn is the best. The facility it well outfitted and orderly, the staff are welcoming and flexible, and the class schedule is full. Lots of diversity of young people, older people, various genders, and really positive vibes all around. The others are barely worth investigating in my opinion.

I have never done a review, but just needed to share.I went for a visit to inquire about membership and the male attendee, I think his name was Joe was short with me when I asked questions. He deflected my request for a tour of the facility then cut me off to take a phone call. I asked if there was some else to help me and I noticed he pulled out a knife while explaining how he was the new manager. I just want to say that the knife scared me. I think he realized that I was uncomfortable and tried to apologize and explained he was a Mexican and Mexicans carry knives. I am not sure how that applies to my seeking a membership.Im not sure about the rest of the staff there, but I was told that majority of the staff is great. From what I could see the facility looks like a popular place and the equipment looks good. Id give more stars if my experience with the manager Jo was more pleasant and I didnt have to receive an unsolicited reasoning for his knife wielding.

A few years back I visited here. BJ was gracious enough to give me some one on one instruction and a few rounds of rolling. Great facility and Impeccable hospitality. Rolling with BJ Penn and His gym was like sharing batting practice with Babe Ruth in Yankee Stadium. Cant say enough good things about this man and his facility.

I moved from the mainland and chose this gym over the others I checked out. I liked it. They have decent pricing, ac on the top floor, decent hours and lots of equipment. Downside, not a 24 hour gym, while having a lot of equipment they are missing some basics, and lack of parking. Overall I like this gym and recommend it.

Its child daycare at 5pm hard to do cardio with unsupervised kids in the wait area. Its stuffy and hot and the music needs to be louder than all the kids. I go to the gym its a better location than downtown but I have to wonder sometimes.

I went in today wanting to purchase a 3 month membership. The teenaged girl working behind the counter was completely unfriendly and unwelcoming. She said there is a $5 card fee, and I *almost* said that seemed kinda silly to be charging $5 for a piece of plastic that should be included in the membership. When she swiped my debit card though, she said the card fee is actually $10. How can they charge $10 dollars for a little piece of plastic that should be included in the membership?? After swiping my card, she didnt say thank you or anything, she just stared at her screen, and when she saw I was still standing there, she said Thats all. They should really try hiring adults who want to be friendly with their customers.I pointed out she previously said the card fee was $5. Her response was, No, I said $10. Completely unfriendly, didnt even offer any reason why they have a card fee in the first place (probably because there ISNT a reason.) Also the steam room is broken and no one knows when the owner will be repairing it. I will not be renewing my membership.

My experience with Penn Fitness and Training center was very positive. Instructor Evelyn teaches Zumba. I am 54 years old and I have been in many gyms and Zumba classes. Instructor Evelyn is the BEST Zumba teacher that I have ever had. She is a fitness professional. She makes sure that all the body muscles are worked out through out her classes. She is funny and a happy person. She makes sure that her students do the exercises correctly. She motives me to work out. I HIGHLY recommend to try her classes.

Customer service is lacking by management.I just visited the gym a few days ago on a referral to get a workout and some rolls in on the mats during a lunch break.I asked for assistance with a machine. The gym manager, whom I asked for assistance from, expressed that he was unable to assist me. He then referred me to a personal training service class. Really? The type of excuses, excuse me, expressed reasoning by the attendant for his inability to actually come out from behind the desk to see me clearly and assist me? All I was trying to ask was for assistance with pulling a pin out of a seized machine. Here is my rant:To monetize such a simple educational service (equipment use) that is typically free as part of current trends and the industries best practices is a 100 percent investment in staff education with the goal of assuring of a 100 percent positive customer experience, is bad practice. To be blunt, for the most part, monetizing such a service is a fail and somewhat humorous being that first, my visit to the island was to take a break from the planning of a large BJJ athletic event we are hoping to bring to the island next year to support a state wide initiative.Second the reasonings expressed by the manager, for his inability to assist me falls short in regards to the CRM pipeline as the manager may be demonstrating his bias that lacks recognition of the lifetime value of just one customer. I hope this is not echoed by his staff because of his management/administrative philosophy.

Literally been to all the gyms in Hilo...Penns is the best for what ever your into (bodybuilding, power lifting, mma etc). Good equipment, good people, friendly staff and overall has everything you could look for in a good gym. Gets a lil crowded from time to time but that’s with every good gym lol.

Crappy gym and deeply fraudulent. Cancelled my membership over a year ago when I left the state. Gym continues to charge me every month despite phone calls, emails, and NUMEROUS attempts from Chase fraud department to get them to stop. Every single month I have to dispute charges which the gym refuses to respond to. Beware, they are stealing money. Oh, and while I went there I paid a trainer who didnt provide the sessions paid for and dropped off the map. Beware. If you like to work out with subpar old equipment at a gym that smells like hell, isnt clean and then git ripped off then this is the place for you.

My sister & I stopped in just to grab a tshirt. Michelle behind the counter couldnt have been more kind & helpful. Before we even got the shirts she took us downstairs & we got to watch Valentina Shevchenko train BJJ! After that Michelle took us into a cage & took our picture. I wished I lived here so this could be my gym. Very nice welcoming environment & the shirts are great! Thank you Michelle for making our day!

This is the Best gym on the Big Island. They have top of the line cardio machines. If your in to Bodybuilding they have the right equipment for that. If your in to Powerlifting they have the best equipment for that. The new staff is really nice & helpful the members are familyy orientated like a big Ohana as we say in Hawaii. This is where I train & been very successful in many competitions. Setting the I.P.L World Record in Las Vegas. U.S.P.A American Record & U.S.P.A State Records. In the 165lbs RAW Bench Press Open Sub Masters & Masters Class. Come down and join me as I train for my next competition in May for the San Jose Fit Expo!!

The midget at the counter (Joe or Joey) who’s always mentioning he’s Mexican has the worst customer service ever. He tried to make me pay for a membership when I still had an existing month left. He was very pushy and rude about it. When my membership is done I will not be coming back here again.
