I enrolled my kids over two years ago for regular physical activity and to gain self-confidence. Their confidence as well as their strength/coordination has grown exponentially. The instruction is world class and I appreciate that they value the mental aspect as much as the physical.

My kids have really enjoyed their time here! The instructors are knowledgeable and encouraging. Right blend for us of learning discipline and competition and just having fun and getting exercise! We go to the West Jordan location also. This one is smaller, but, bonus! Smells like pizza.

While the students and general instructors at Monk Wise are great, the owner will nickel and dime you over anything and everything. Read the contract* carefully. Monk Wise will charge you maintenance fees on top of your tuition. If you cancel your membership, you still have to pay two months’ worth of tuition (supposedly this has been changed to 30 days, but in all our negotiations to end our contract, we never once saw a new contract or signed it, even when we were still regularly attending the school). You’re charged to advance, you’re charged to participate in extra activities, you’re charged to put your account on hold . . . you’re even charged to attend a potluck.Monk Wise works off the idea that you pay a fee and then attend as many classes as you want. But if you have a schedule that makes it hard to come in often, or, say, children, this model is not ideal. We paid extra to receive private lessons, only to never receive private lessons or a contract for the adjusted payment. But, of course, we got $118 taken out of our account regularly, every *two weeks*. Attempts to discuss payments with the owner were either met with very salesman-like runarounds or complete silence. (We were even charged for two weeks’ of lessons when the studio was closed for Christmas break, which is illegal. Like I said, you will be nickeled and dimed to the point of insanity.)If you’re interested in martial arts, there are much better places to enroll. Learn from my mistakes and go somewhere else.*Their website says they have no contracts. This is a lie.

I started at Monk Wise about 6 months ago, having never done any martial arts before. Not only is it an amazing workout, but its also a great way to destress and focus on your body and yourself. The people are great, the instructors are fantastic, and Ive never had so much fun while exercising. I highly recommend this place!

Ive been with monkwise for almost 5 years now. I have learned so much and has so much fun. The classes are exciting and you definitely get a good workout. The fact that there are different subjects being focused on and cycled through each day is cool too. One day is weapons or forms and other things. The instructors are understanding and helpful but also help to push you.

It is an excellent workout, self paced learning, and a fun and positive environment with great people. No other studio like it that Ive been to, and has the nicest and most supportive staff.

Ive been with the academy since it first opened and wouldnt trade the experience for anything else. Regardless of how serious you take the training, the instructors will work with you on all levels with great patience. All anyone needs to get started is an open mind and courage within themselves.

Im constantly impressed with the knowledge of the teachers, both in technique and in cultural and historical background. Its a great place to go for a rich experience.Pros:+ A diverse curriculum covering several aspects of kung fu including numerous empty-hand and weapon forms, modern performance skills, sanda, and core athletics.+ Flexible and friendly teachers who will adjust the lessons to teach you what you want to learn.+ The performance team is an opportunity for motivated students to push themselves far beyond the regular lessons and compete.+ Class size is moderate and usually there is more than one teacher, so students can get individual help.Cons:- The cost seems a bit more than other options, but considering the quality and quantity of instruction it may be worth it.- All of the extra events and opportunities are so tempting, but the added cost prevents me from joining them.

This review is specifically for Janet, the Tai Chi instructor. Janet came out to our family home and gave us a private Tai Chi lesson, including some history, basic movements, weapon forms and a little demonstration of what a complete series looks like. It was WONDERFUL. She was knowledgeable, professional and made it fun. I would highly recommend her.

Ive been at monkwise for about a year and a half now. My experience here has been fantastic, the stuff you learn in your curriculum is great and everyone there is super friendly and helpful. The events happen are awesome too, with moon festival, summer retreats and Chinese new year celebration to name a few, the experiences you have are ones youll remember forever. Both Shifus are amazing too, they have tons of experience and are great teachers!

Traditional instruction from sifus with an established school lineage from China and Tiawan. Several styles. Multiple weapons. Meditation. Internal and external arts. Southern and northern styles. After years at other studios, I have never seen such depth of material taught by such skilled, patient, and masterful instructors.

If you have never considered a martial art, let me suggest here to be your starting place. Kung Fu and Tai Chi offer an excellent form of exercise that covers everything: strength training, flexibility, and awesome weapons. That in and of itself is amazing, but go deeper, open up more and you will be awe struck by the discoveries you make inside yourself. I found the best me yet; a me that I have never known. If you allow it, if you seek it, if you work for it the principles and philosophies Kung Fu is founded on will take you beyond your expectations and show you a world of possibilities. This studio, these people, Kung Fu has changed my life.-Breelyn Morris

UPDATE September 2019:When I posted this review in 2014 I was pretty sure I would continue to be a student at Monk Wise for years. It has now been 7+ years (!) at the studio and am constantly amazed at the skills Ive gained over the years. The environment remains the same: friendly, challenging, respectful but in a warm family friendly environment. My kids have grown up with Monk Wise as students for 6+ years and we all have competed in national and international tournaments as well as performed at local cultural events. My kids feel the skills they have learned are invaluable and have made them better physically, emotionally and have given them a strength of character that few other sports could. Where else can you strengthen these traits in a fun, safe, friendly and culturally enriching environment? I challenge you to find out.Original review:Monk Wise Martial Arts Academy is by far the best martial arts studio in Utah, if not all of North America. I have been a student at Monk Wise for over two years now and have been enriched by the spirit of the masters and instructors and the beauty of Chinese culture. I have grown as a person not just physically but spiritually as well in kung fu and tai chi. The adult program at Monk Wise is extensive but presented in a way that is welcoming and supportive no matter your background in martial arts. I came late to martial arts, having done some as kid, but when I hit 40 thinking I was too old to reap the benefits. How mistaken I was! I feel years younger and more fit than I have been in over 20 years! My children were already enrolled in a very popular local Tae Kwon Do studio before I joined Monk Wise. I knew Tae Kwon Do was not for me as I found it very boring after 6 months of training when I was a kid. I then explored the other local martial arts studios including kung fu, aikido and karate and was so impressed with Monk Wise that I signed up. No contracts, no hidden scams and amazingly priced for unlimited classes in both kung fu and tai chi, with fantastic family options as well. I then saw how bored my kids became with TKD and brought them to Monk Wise. I immediately saw the change in their attitude, their enjoyment in the classes and the excitement of going to Monk Wise. I was also disappointed to see the deficiencies in the training my kids received at the TKD studio - at Monk Wise they have become stronger, more flexible and more balanced physically and spiritually. The lineage of Monk Wise is strong in Chinese martial arts with a history that spans over 34 generations, a Grandmaster who was president of the Beijing Wushu team and Jing Wu Physical Association, and Masters who have won countless tournaments and awards in China and internationally. There is nowhere else except possibly in Taiwan and a few schools in China that can boast such a lineage and an ability to impart that knowledge in a way that is friendly to the busy American lifestyle. The classes are fun, friendly and challenging. My family is part of Monk Wise and Monk Wise is part of my family. See you in class!

One of the best things I could have ever done for myself was starting Kung Fu at Monk Wise two years ago. Since starting here I have improved my health (weight and overall), confidence and balance, making friends at the same time. The Shifus and Instructors are very knowledgeable and supportive – taking the time to make sure information is completely understood by everyone. I enjoy the material we cover, particularly the weapons training, and forms –even liking Tai Chi!The times for classes work well and by going here, I also have the option to attend classes at their other location on Redwood Road – including the three hour combined training on Saturdays, something that sounds daunting but leaves me feeling accomplished.

I have to agree with Nate, Monk Wise is a great place to mingle have fun while exercising. The material is most certainly incredible. Its honestly what Ive been looking for when I searched for true kung fu school. American Kempo is NOT kung fu. Have a look for yourself, if you are like me searching for an authentic chinese martial arts that will teach the history, background and application of Gong fu (kung fu), you will find it there.
