I made a lot of friends and had a generally pleasant experience. Not all the teachers are good, but many are exceptional. Being self motivated and organized is especially important here just due to the sheer size of the student population. Sure there are fights and drugs and scary kids, but none of which will effect your experience unless you seek them out. All and all a pretty good, if imperfect place to begin your adult life.

This school is the most disorganized school and it is getting worse year by year. You have to keep getting in touch with them to get your schedule correct .Even though you give in your absent notes in and they give you a note as proof to show you have given in a note and also your child had all 89 and above grades in that subject they can deny you a credit. When we appealed for the credit it was denied because they want original notes for the absences which had already been given in and it is impossible to go back to a doctor or hospital to get a letter for being absent some six months ago. When the student needs to see a counselor they are given the run around and are not allowed to see them,I dont see what is the point of having a counselor if they cant see them when needed. If you have to sign your child out you are told to go to so many different offices. The teachers just give homework and expect children to just read and answer questions or watch videos online. I have had two children go to this school and have known this school for six years now,I have never seen the principal except at the graduation handing out the diplomas.I hope for the students who will come to this school in the future there will be changes.I hope it gets more organized, has more of an open door policy for students and parents to come in and talk about any concerns, problems and suggestions they may have.

My dad went to Lamar High School 30 years ago. Here I am, a sophomore at Lamar High School today in 2016. Lamar is filled with many opportunities for students ranging from professional and creative levels. There are a handful of clubs and a handful of leading chances for every student. Lamar is a fun and safe community for all students. The teachers are extremely dedicated. They always strive for educating students, preparing them for the real world. Teachers at Lamar seem to constantly impress my mom every time she visits! My mother graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BBA in Finance and my father graduated from the University of Houston with a BBA in Finance and a bachelors in Accounting. Lamar has setup a huge opportunity for my family and I with professional and money making careers, just like a school should. I have found myself to be the president of multiple clubs at Lamar as well as eyes open for my own personal professional career in the future.

Lamar wont really inhibit you from achieving your dreams. Dont expect a boost though unless your dreams are limited to the obtainment of an IB diploma. There were some standout teachers at Lamar during my time there. I never felt unsafe even though there was a dead bat once that was either rabid or suspected of being rabid.

I will now tell you the story of my freshman year. It was a sunny day, during a STAAR test. I excused myself to use the bathroom, opened the door, and saw my little homie K rolling a blunt on the sink, and shooting dice. Another time, I witnessed a student run full-force into a wall. On purpose. Great students, bad faculty.

This school is disorganize , have rats in it , AP teachers are not good and IB either. Do not send your kid here. Private school please. My kid have a lot of videos that I should put in the internet, from student dancing on top of their table while in class and also kids selling drugs , using drugs and offering drugs all around the school. Also , kids stealing each other laptops chargers etc. I do not know what is going on , but the kids has outnumber the staff. It is a pity they are having this problems. Do not send your kid to this school! Teachers teaching math with no math degree ..unbelievable :(

Good news is that the administration is accessible to parents & students. The IB program is high quality, for self directed students. The core curriculum and higher level classes are taught by many sub-par faculty , very hit & miss (more miss) . In sum, a lot of good staff, attentive admin. but the HISD machine is systemically flawed (due to size?) and holding teaching staff to standards that are acceptable to high, is near impossible (like it is with many students). The faculty are stretched beyond limits...and some are just plain, inept. Our student (an above average, organized student ,who attended a private school environment K-8) has been disappointed in her education there. Overall. We, too, are second guessing the choice. Do your homework. Talk to students.Talk to faculty. If it is a good match for your student, a good education can be achieved given that tenacity is in the formula.

This is terribly sad, it used to be The Best back in the 50s, excellent students, teachers, athletics, ratio of students who went on for further education. So sad, Ive heard the building was not going to continue to use as a school.............do you know any future of the structure, hopefully not torn down but given a better use.

My daughter is a current student at this High School. Since two weeks ago we have been trying to get an updated transcript seal with all her credits and her current GPA. We have contact Jason Bernal, Bejamin Guinther and many other staff members at the school and as usual they gave us a transcript that was incomplete. The transcript was not seal and the gpa was not recalculated after adding a class that was missing , so her gpa was the same (she got an A in the missing class). When my daughter try to ask for recommendations letters they did the same thing to her and she did not receive anything. The constant irresponsibility of this teachers, staff and the entire HISD is priceless. The biggest rumor in this school is that the majority of the students are not going to graduate, only half of them will graduate, meaning a total amount of 400 students out of 800 students. Do yourself a favor and do not put your kids in this school!

In the schools current state of disarray due to the simultaneous process of the destruction of two of its aged buildings and the construction of a modern building this is putting students and faculty at a large disadvantage. However, it is not changing the confusing nature of the IB program which is so forcibly thrust upon its candidates that most students have little to no idea of what is to be expected of them. Teachers are no help as the famed HUB has taken away all expectations of actual teaching in the class room. While there are some fabulous teaches that I have been delighted to be taught from, especially in the math department, most could be outdone by anyone picked off the street with the basic free knowledge that Wikipedia provides. The decrepit buildings, majority of the staff, and obnoxious students that have little to no punishments for most of their offenses have overall depressed my view of how anything in the real world will be run in the public sector. Nonetheless, the only upside to this establishment is the apparent lack of competition for class rank and the social scene. I walk through the hallways and often students I have never seen before; you could go through the school and talk to ten different people everyday and not get to everyone by the end of the semester. This vast pool of students gives each individual a greater chance to find a group that they are compatible with. In my opinion most of the students are mind-numbingly rambunctious, however there are some very intelligent and fun groups of kids that make this school better. I hope that this new building and system that HISD plans to implement for Lamar will exceed my expectations. That will probably happen though since they are so low currently. I know I will never attend the new school and only be affected by the gradual progress of the government employees that are paid by the hour and not by the work done. As I sit in portable buildings for the rest of the duration of my junior and soon to be senior year I will look to the future, which is the new grades that will come into Lamar year after year. I hope they arent as discouraged as Ive become and find motivation in the small, outstanding things in the vast debris of mediocrity.

I went to this school for about 9 weeks and i am never going to step another foot on this campus again. The students here dont do their work at all (unless youre in a IB class), and just so that the school can look good they pass everyone with a 70 so the school can have a high passing rate. The school does not care at all for real teaching values. I had half of my teachers cuss at me and it was for no reason at all. I am a person that cares what is being taught to me, but the teachers and faculty at lamar do not care at all. Do not send your kid to this school, please take it from someone that actually went there.

School is a big pile of trash, if your in the IB diploma program I suggest you to talk to your counselor and get the hell out, especially if you want to pursue sports because the IB program is hard and you wanna make sure you get the best grades and that won’t happen with hard ass classes . They make you take IB exams and 4 years of languages , which teachers do a horrible job teaching. I was in Spanish 3 and I didn’t even know how to count to 5 in Spanish because I was just passed along. Please do not go to this school unless you are not trying to get an IB diploma

Some of yall need to stop with those 5 star ratings only because Liza went here. Because if you actually knew this school you wouldnt even bother lmao. Bet you Liza didnt even like this school like that. Lamar you truly have given me some hard times. I can not even begin to explain that. But I have some great memories and I guess I learned things here and there, I wont lie. And there is help to improve in things. Your teachers can help if you really want to improve. But, there are those certain teachers that just dont care. Which sucks. Because if you actually liked a subject, you wont now (your interest for it gets thrown out the window). And then, if youre like me, you start to procrastinate and decide to haul everything at once towards the end of the year. We all know how that turns out.... And then there are those who got put in a certain subject for the first time and they dont even know what theyre doing. So, the kids and the teacher are learning at the same time. Like, really? The people there can be 50/50. Meaning, you can meet some of the best people in the world there, but they can also become some of the worst. It just depends. THERE IS A HUGE COMMUNICATION PROBLEM IN THIS SCHOOL! IDC IF PEOPLE SAY IT WAS BECAUSE ITS A BIG SCHOOL, I HAVE LITERALLY SEEN BIGGER SCHOOLS DO A BETTER JOB AT GETTING A MESSAGE ACROSS TO THEIR KIDS, ESPECIALLY SENIORS!! Ridiculous communication problem, sometimes you wont find out about something until the day its due. Im talking assignments and school related business. WHO GIVES HALF THE SENIORS A DUE NOTICE THE DAY BEFORE THE DUE DATE? They did the same thing with the graduation cap and gowns and most of us ended up ordering our stuff late and then we had to pay $30 more for it. RRs are gross, I went to pee and there was water dripping on my head from the second floor rr and Im pretty sure that wasnt sink water..... The football games are fun though. Homecoming this year was alright. Heights was more lit. Prom was great and cheesy. You just need to find the right people to make this difficult place a little better. And you need to take in deep breaths if youre a senior and graduation is coming up, because you will freak out. And get angry at the people who work there, because they sometimes want to be difficult. There are certain staff there that LIVE TO SEE YOU MAD. IT Department can be rough, but its okay. Food was gross, its better to get your own. School is OLDDDDDDD. Classrooms need a few touches, because OMG ew. Dress code there is dumb, but nothing you can do. One of the coaches is annoying. He thinks he runs the joint. If you think about it (if you went here) you really can have a good time here if you want to though. Some of yall just wanted to be miserable in Lamar 24/7 and thats why yall in these comments blaming Lamar for your whole entire life. IB kids have a love/hate relationship with the teachers and staff. Idk about regular, but IB is stressing in terms of work load. Because YOU KNOW YOURE DOING ALL THOSE NOTES AND PROJECTS AND ESSAYS FOR NOTHING. BECAUSE YOU KNOW BY THE TIME YOU HIT SENIOR YEAR YOU JUST WANT TO GRADUATE AND DONT CARE ABOUT THE IB DIPLOMA. The IB Exams are a painnnnnn. I was no longer an IBDC thanks to Ms. Ervin. How do you forget to give a kid a third HL class? Thanks alot, because of that I still had to do the same work as DCs and had to take those exams where I was wasting my time. But cool. Anyways, yeah its a real trip in this school like Seby said. Its hell sometimes, but you can make the best friendships here and have good memories so....better than Bellaire so im good.

Lets get real here. I am from Europe and Ive only been in this school for 6 months and Im leaving in 3. My goal here was never to learn. It was to score the higher grades possible. At Lamar you do NOT learn. The teachers give you an assignment and some notes and you just do it. They do NOT teach you anything. In the first semester I had straight As and I am no genius. If you are failing classes here is simply because 1. you dont care or 2 you are really dumb.If you want your child to learn do not send them here. The teachers dont care about teaching and they dont care about you either.I dont feel safe in this school. Anyone can come in and out because there are no gates whatsoever. There is one officer inside campus but he just seats his fat ass in the golf car and does nothing. Any person can come in with a gun anf shoot us all. And dont get me started on drugs...... there is a lot of weed and pills in this school. The american kids there are the worst. Most of them are xenophobic and very very VERY ignorant (for example a girl there thought France was in the US).Overall this school was OK TO ME because I only need them grades :) because Im coming back to Portugal and the educational system tehre is much better. But if you really expect your kids to learn please DONT SEND THEM THERE. I have some good teachers but most of them just dont do anything all class long. Again, with all the shootings America has I dont fell safe in that school. Anyone can come in and out and students leave school all the time and no one cares.I found this experience here in the states very interesting but Im looking forward to go back to Portugal. You have no idea... the kids in this school are so so so so so so ignorant. I feel so bad for them.AGAIN, IF YOU WANT YOUR KIDS TO LEARN AND HAVE A GOOD TIME DO NOT SEND THEM TO LAMAR. I hope this helped.

This is a horrible school, i dislike it very much, it is too much , its dirty, unsanitary and dont even let me get to the staff. They are all disrespectful and deserve a slap slap. Mind you that all of the work is on a computer and no paper. The hallways are jam packed and me being claustrophobic doesnt work well with me. I hate it it is so freaking boring and no activities at all during school. The only FUN things to do around here are the sports, which i cant play because i got hit by a car. Dont send your child here it is literally hell on earth. Private schools are the best. Harmony is one of them. I am a very talented young man and i cannot express it all except for social media on my own time. The grading system is horrible, most (not all) are at least failing 1 to 2 classes. I have all As and two Bs currently because i am smart and planning on being something in life. This school doesnt care what the hell you do or how you do it. The police officers are very rude and need a sha- boop-boop-boop! Best believe they better do better cause by the end Of this year i better have learned something from this hell house. I wouldnt be surprised if i didnt. One of the most dangerous things a school can do is not have protection like gates literally anyone can come in and out of this school. The students are totally unsupervised , they can leave the campus whenever they would like and guess who cares!!... NOT LAMAR. So let this be one of the most valuable warnings youll probably get in your life so again as i repeat PARENTS DO NOT SEND YOUR NICE LOVING CHILDREN TO THIS SCHOOL. THEY WILL TURN INTO BABY DEMONS BEST BELIEVE. I ALMOST DID BUT I HAVE GOD AND MYSELF TO FIGHT THROUGH.

I am a sophomore at Lamar High School and i gotta say these past to years has been a trip. The every day cycle is very simple. You get to school and maybe wait around for a fight. The bell always rings two or three minutes late. Go to class but in your way you see a pack of girls and guys blocking the hallway because suddenly a conversation is worth more than class or stopping in the middle of the hallway to text is the better idea. Get to class and you get seen not in dress code by the teacher or an AP. They say the phrase get in dress code, I say okay and I take off my simple blue american eagle sweater and when he or she leaves I put it back on. But, some people just want to make the APs day hell by arguing that its just a a sweater. The class begins and they do the morning announcements, but suddenly theres a guy trying to sell you snacks. The most common phrase at Lamar High School is you wanna buy some snacks. They have a variety of snacks, they have hot cheetos, honey buns, sour patches, hot fries, big texas, and sometimes they have chocolate bars. You get to your next class and theres an argument about why Donald Trump is or isnt the best candidate. Next class, theres a guy arguing with the teacher because the teacher is teaching a lesson and is interrupting his conversation with his partner. Lamar High School is full of mysteries. Sex tapes in school, drugs, cops, you can find anything you want at this school. The faculty is corrupt the kids are hell. But, I have the best memories in this school.
