Love this place. Totally helping my son overcome his learning disabilities. He can focus better and longer after only 4 monthsIts been four years since we finished at stowell. Looking back id say it helped while he was there a great deal. Night and day. But Long term it hasnt helped nearly as much as Id hoped. Im sure due to many outside factors. (They would say partly due to his screen time and gaming) If I could do it all over again Id have my son take a professional psych ed test first then go from there. Turns out my son has suffered from depression from a young age. We should have concentrated on that first.

My daughter Isabelle (I am using her account to post this) attended a private school with small class sizes. It was like pulling teeth to get her to do her homework. I couldnt understand, because I knew my daughter was smart, and once she hit 5th grade when the learning became more accelerated her grades dropped dramatically. She really struggled, not for lack of effort, just pure struggle. I remember the day I was called into a meeting with her 6th grade teachers. They told me she was not doing her homework and they each one went around the room and said things about my daughter that I knew in my heart just were not true. They said she needed a tutor. I told them she had a tutor and it just was not working and that something was wrong. I asked if they had any way to test for any type of learning disabilities. They said that they did not have the time or resources to do it and stressed they did not believe anything was wrong she was just being lazy.Thank God I met Lita, a therapist at the Stowell Center. She asked me to go to a meeting and learn more about what they did at the Stowell Center. She got my daughter tested and we found out that she had dyslexia and some memory /processing issues. Schools generally dont care to look for dyslexia, even though Jill Stowell would provide a way to look for it at my daughters school and probably any school if requested. My daughter worked with Lita and a few other therapists there for 9 months, 3x per week. She also went two weeks in the summer just before school started. That may seem like a long time, but in comparison to what your child will gain, it is just a snap of the finger. My daughter wanted to be a vet and was told by one of her teachers that vets had to a lot of homework and a lot of college and made her feel like she could not do it. Her self esteem was so low, she couldnt keep friends. It broke my heart to see her spiral downward. After her work with the Stowell center retraining her brain, things started to improve slowly, but steadily. The next school year, her grades went from Ds and Cs to Bs and she got her first A for Jr. high school. This year, she is in 9th grade, I just got her report card last week and tears welled up in my eyes as I saw straight As. Her confidence is so much better, she has friends and is now planning on going to college. This is not a tutoring center, it is a life changing center

I cannot say enough good things about Stowell Learning Center in Irvine. In short, Jill Stowell and her team get to the root issues causing learning difficulties. After the speech therapy assessments and a full psych/educational assessment were done. we asked ourselves Can the deficits be treated or should our daughter go through life compensating for these deficits? I now have my answer. Deficits in many cases can be corrected. We don t need to settle for just coping and learning compensating strategies. I m writing as a mother of a soon to be 10 year old 4th grader who in broad terms has a language learning/processing disorder. She struggles with working memory, executive functioning, a slower cognitive processing speed etc. Even with putting in 150% effort, homework took 1.5 hours. She wonders why she is so slow, I can t get it, why she can t remember facts and that other kids get to play but not her . After an assessment at the Center, she was then put on a program; a combination of listening/comprehension, reading, sound therapy and maths concepts. The sessions are NOT tutoring. ie she does not do homework there. The programs are not one size fits all. They are tailored to the child s needs. The Irvine staff are professional yet caring. Opening lines of communication to the teachers and advocate for the children s needs. They are incredibly supportive and approachable. We are in our 5th month of going 3 afternoons a week. I see a transformation in her. She is more comfortable in her own skin. Her confidence has grown. She now knows that she is not stupid, as her test scores are showing that she is going from a C student in some subjects to a B+ and A-. She is not only learning, she is retaining the information and can reproduce what she knows. She understands that she learns differently. Upon starting at Stowell, her reading and comprehension test scores were 9/20. 2 months into Stowell, she was getting 14-15/20. 5 months in, she is now getting anywhere between 18-20/20. She is understanding the material in its context more and more. I need to say too that she goes to a great school that accommodates for her learning style, provides the support she needs and there is good partnership happening between Stowell, the school and home. We are each doing our part in supporting and training her.Cost? It s costly but again, worth every penny. We have made some lifestyle choices to give her the opportunity to learn and grow at Stowell. We see it as a necessary investment in her life.I have seen the effectiveness of the training she is receiving at Stowell Learning Center and the changes in our daughter. I hope that other kids and families who struggle like we did will contact the Center and experience the same growth that we are seeing in our daughter. I highly recommend the book At Wits End written by Jill Stowell. The information nights are also worth going to. SLC have helped 100 s of children with a variety of learning styles and challenges and I am grateful that my daughter is one of them.
