Had the pleasure of training here today. The class was awesome and the gym is one of the coolest I’ve ever been to. The class was felt like a safe environment as opposed to a shark tank that some of the gyms you might run into. If you’re in the area or visiting Louisville, this is a must stop for any bjj athletes.

I was on a work trip for the GIE EXPO and I stopped by to get a session in and it was a very good experience. I am a brown belt and I got to roll with some black belts that where very good and welcoming 🙏. I rolled with a killer purple belt who surprised me with some great pressure and armbars. From there lower level guys to there higher level ones are truly talented. This school seems to breed guys with a very good top game! Great gym and experience 💪 👏 👌 👍 🙌

I’ve been a trainer for over a decade and have seen many different styles of coaching. This gym has some of the best coaching I’ve ever seen in any sport. Match that with an amazing atmosphere and you have a winning combination. If you live in the area I highly recommend trying it out this gym. I’d guarantee you sign up by the end of the day. It’s amazing, they make you feel like family!

Had the opportunity to train at Derby City MMA. From the moment I entered the facility, behind the counter, I was greeted with a warm, welcoming, smiling face. From there, it just got better. I mustve been spoke to about ten students before I had a chance to introduce myself to Adam, the First degree Black Belt instructor. Class started promptly with warm-ups, then instructions.Professor Adam was very detailed orientated in demonstrating todays technique. Something that as either a new, intermediate, or advanced student is looking for in an instructor, and school.If youre looking for a school to either begin or further your training, pay Derby City MMA a visit.

I was in Louisville for a couple of weeks and needed a place to train bjj. When I walked into the Derby City MMA I knew I was in the right place. The staff were extremely helpful and polite. It wasn’t expensive at all. There were lots of color belts with a lot of experience to train with. The instructors were black belts that had a wealth of knowledge. I picked up a couple of awesome techniques that I had not seen in my two years of training. I was treated like part of the team for the short time I was there. Chewy was a really cool guy that instructed half the classes Himself. I hope that I’m in Louisville again soon so I can do it again.

My mental health is at an all time high after getting involved here.Incredible coaches with phenomenal pedigrees.Best training atmosphere you could ever ask for.Eventually Im going to have to leave the area and DCMMA is, without a doubt, going to be the hardest part about leaving.If youre considering checking it out, stop thinking and start doing.This is the gym all gyms should aspire to be.

My husband and I came up to Louisville for our anniversary and to train at Derby City. Chewy and his students were so friendly and welcoming. It definitely did not feel like we were visitors. Chewy made a point to roll with me and to give feedback to every student while we were working on technique in class. Great environment! We hope to come back and train again in the future!

Solid and chill people at all skill levels. They do military discount too so thats pretty amazing. Definitely recommend this gym. They have a ton to offer too. BJJ, boxing, and kick boxing are just a few. Its also kid friendly. Prices are great too!

I was visiting town and am huge fan of the head instructor’s YouTube and Spotify content “ChewJitsu”. Staff was welcoming, professional, and COVID-safe. I had a pleasant experience buying merchandise to train in!

The facility and classes are fine but the price and times are terrible. I only went for the group boxing classes and nothing else. I paid 120 monthly on a 6 month contract with an early cancellation fee and thats with a student discount. With classes and work I could basically only go weekends and theyre closed Sundays and open sat 10am-1pm. After 6 months my contract ended but I was unaware the subscription autorenewed so for about 5 month I had been paying 120 a month just to call and be told there is nothing I can do about that since I signed the contract with them and the subscription has to be canceled via email along with a 30 day notice so the charge the 120 I was charged that morning cant be canceled despite not going to the gym for the last after half year. 120 a month for group boxing classes is not worth it.

It was great while on vacation to stop in and get beat up. Chewy and his crew were extremely welcoming and really good at Jits! If I ever stay in the area again I’ll be stopping in to roll. Thanks again for being so welcoming.

Awesome place! We did a free trial class and signed up immediately afterwards for 3 months. My step son had a really good time even tho he didnt want to go at first. Very clean gym, instructors were very good. Took time to work with every child in the class to make sure they understood what to do. Great experience highly recommended if you are thinking about MMA classes for your children.

Nick “Chewy” Albin and all the guys at Chewjitsu/Derby MMA are true gentlemen and it was a pleasure training with them. As someone visiting from New York, I felt very comfortable training at their facility and every single student treated me with respect. Nick is a great teacher as well, he breaks down the techniques so that any level student can easily understand the movements. I also had the chance to roll with a few of their students that displayed very good technique and pushed the pace for a really good work out! I highly recommend anyone visiting Kentucky to stop by and train with these guys! You will not be disappointed.

150$ a month is a scam, do NOT go here. During covid they had to suspend operations and any time I emailed them about classes I got no response, but that didnt stop them charging me the 150 a month. MILITARY FRIENDLY. Being in the Army I move around a lot and it’s always hard starting at a new gym but these guys welcomed me in and treated me like I had been training there for years. There is serious talent in this place but everyone will stop what they are doing to help anyone that needs extra help. It doesn’t matter if you have been training for years or you are just starting out these guys will treat you like family. Strongly recommend!

This is a great gym, with excellent staff and coaches. Came to visit the gym from Canada while visiting family in Louisville. The coaches and other members were extremely welcoming, and happy to have us jump in with them. I joined Derby City MMA in July 2007. It became a home away from home for me and Ive been there ever since.The close-knit community is something you need to experience for yourself in person.Since joining Ive begun teaching classes and I cant encourage you enough to try a free class if youre interested in giving it a shot.

I moved here from North Carolina in September and was welcomed to the team without any hesitation. Chewy, Joe and Chad treat you like a member of their family and not a random customer.The personal attention given by the instructors is first rate. Very personalized and they don’t sugarcoat your weaknesses nor hesitate to praise positive gains. 100 percent positive energy from these guys.The gym is very clean and well organized. They have great access and hours. I highly recommend this place.

On my way down to Nashville from Canada, I called to see if I could do two drop in classes on my way through. Everyone at the gym was very friendly and although pretty casual they were very professional. Chewie was an excellent instructor as was Dustin and Alicia (sorry if I got the speeding incorrect). I would definitely stop in if you’re in the area. These are all great folks to train with- super supportive and no egos whatsoever! I had a blast!

I dropped in for a class while I was in town. I had somewhat of an idea what the gym was like because I have seen a few of the ChewJitsu videos and I have encountered some of the gym members in competitions before. Everyone was very welcoming, they rolled very technically, and they rolled hard. I definitely intend to go back.

I am down here on business and dropped in and it was awesome. Every staff member was very polite and professional. The atmosphere was great from what I saw no one had a tough guy/gal attitude. I love training at this gym. I make an hour drive one way to train here. In my opinion, it is the best in the area. Staff is very helpful and the instructors are eager to see their students advance. There is an amazing relaxed and familiar vibe and nothing feels too formal or rigid. I definitely recommend this gym.

Derby City MMA is great! I stopped in to train while passing through Louisville on a road trip and everyone was very polite and welcoming. As soon as I stepped on the mats it felt like I had been there one hundred times before. If I was local I would absolutely train at this gym. I will definitely come back if I am ever in the area.

Derby City has been on my short list of gyms to visit while I am on the road for work. Nick Chewy responded to emails quickly and Chad was more then welcoming the moment I walked in the door giving a very easy feeling while being away from my home gym. By far the best place in the state to train. I’ve been a member off and on since 2010 and consistently training since 2011. I’ve visited other gyms and none have the welcoming family atmosphere that this place has. My Daughter has been doing the kids classes for over 2 years and I can’t Ima what my life would be like without this place it really is an amazing place.

My husband and I dropped in for the noGi class on Monday night while we were home for holidays. There were a ton of people in class, but Chewy managed to be attentive and helpful to everyone there as if it were a small group. The students were welcoming and friendly and we felt like part of the DCMMA family as soon as we arrived. We will definitely be back to train with Chewy and his team again!!

Been going to this gym for several years now off and on due to work. what I learned in here helped me during my journey in life. The training is great and the coaches really care about. They take the time to talk to you about your concerns inside the gym and listen to you about your concerns in life. I appreciate everyone being there for me during my tough times.

Been a member at Derby City for about 7 months, I have been to other gyms before as a newcomer and this one was without a doubt the one. All of the people who train here and the instructors are something truly hard to come by, not just because of their world class dedication to their craft, but they are REAL, genuine people. I have been a part of many different teams, and organizations where the people who you consider to be there for you are always somehow busy all the time. Well let me tell you, that aint anybody at Derby City. These guys who help us grow have more stuff on their plate than anyone I have ever met, but I am confident that if I ever truly need them they are all just a call or text away. A lot of places claim to be a family not just a gym, Derby City MMA is the real deal.

Excellent place to train, been there 7 yrs along with 3 of my kids and the 4th when she is old enough. Coaches and owners are top notch, many classes to choose from. You really get your $$ worth going to this gym!!!!!

*Most 5 star reviews are from 1 time visitors, NOT people who joined and had to deal with their billing issues*My 14 year old son went here for a year. He enjoyed it. The initial sign up was weird, they had a contract you had to sign that stated you had to pay them $300-$500 if you EVER dropped out. Refused to sign it and then they promised they dont hold people to the contract but just have to sign it to get the monthly rate of $60/mo and signed it and all was good for a year. Well my son stopped going so I called to get the automatic payments to stop, they tell me they cant do it to email so and so, so I do and NO RESULTS after several emails and calls. I finally had to call my bank and forward the emails to my bank of me cancelling the payments to get it to stop. Ok, fast forward 8 mo after that, he wants to get back into it. I go on the website and fill out the info, no response, go to the location ready to sign him back up and the lady told me its $120/month now!!! Wow! Uh no thanks! That dont include the gee thats mandatory also they have these weird charges a couple times a year where they charge for gym maintenance and was told it was for lightbulbs!! This place is out of their mind at $120/mo!! Going elsewhere

I travel for a living and Derby City treated me like I was one of their own. They go hard and they will teach you something new in the process. Everyone there was awesome and I hope to make it back someday to train!

I love this gym!!! Derby city mma has changed my life in many ways, this gym has changed me mentally and physically, I walked into derby city weighing 345lbs, lacking confidence and not really having much direction in my life. Today, my weight has dropped down to 205lbs, my confidence has any rocketed, but the biggest thing Ive gained from the gym is a family full of great, helpful people.

The location, hours, and instructors are all fine and I have no complaints regarding them. On day 1 of my 1 year membership I asked not to have an auto-renewal setup as I would not live int he area after about 11 months. This auto-renewal did go through and not a word was sent to me until my expired card denied the payment. Fixing this issue will cost about $800 dollars to a gym i have not been able to attend for 6 months.

First time training in any type of setting outside of organized sports or the regular gym routine. I have been a member for about 8 months now and I love the flexibility in the hours in which I can show up for a class. All of the instructors and staff care about helping you achieve whatever goal you wish to reach and I thoroughly enjoy my time there throughout the week.

Absolutely love this gym. Extremely welcoming and educational. I am a beginner in bjj and never once felt out of place. All the instructors and other people in class work with you and realize everyone starts as a beginner. Great atmosphere.

I have been training at Derby City for over 6 months. I primarily train Jiu Jitsu and also incorporate some strength training as well. I was nervous for my initial classes, but even as a beginner everyone is extremely patient, welcoming and you feel like you are joining a family. I highly recommend.

On a road trip from Ohio and made it a goal to stop here. It was everything I hoped it would be from the moment I was greated by miss Trish all the way up to the class being taught by Mr. Chewy. I would recommend this to anyone traveling through and looking for a place to roll. Been going since I was 14 and recently came back and was Welcomed back with open arms.

Nice instructors however the business has been very shady. I went into the contract understanding one thing then they completely changed that. Did not adequately document when I attended so made it so I could not receive a refund. Quoted 3 different prices for a buyout amount and then couldnt determine what my actual buy out amount would be because they are unorganized. They have made this a very difficult process and have tried to take more money throughout this process because in my opinion I wasnt going to continue attending classes.

My whole family comes here. It started with building strength and confidence with my husband then moved to helping teach my 3 children discipline. My 14yr old had his first tournament and i had never been prouder. The people from DCMMA were there by his mat cheering him on and congratulating him. It warmed my heart to see them come together for him at this special time. My 2 youngest daughters go here as well. One is 9 and one is 6. They both love it. Couldnt say enough about DCMMA. Thanks Nick and Joe for helping my family in strength, discipline, confidence and pride!

I was in town for a few days and wanted to get some rolling in while away from my home academy. Right away, the owner made me feel welcomed, and the BJJ instructors both took the time to observe my technique on the moves we were learning in class. Many of the upper belts were also very helpful and welcoming. Couldnt have asked for a better experience. Its clear that the leadership sets a positive tone at the top. My son Zachary started when he was 10 years old, he had no self confidence but all that changed when he met Chewy and the other instructors. They have helped mold him into the strong young he has become. Zach is now 12 and in the 7th grade, he has the tools and self confidence to handle situations that may arise as they often do in middle school. All I can say is that thanks to Derby City I do not fear for my sons safety in school.The atmosphere at Derby City has been a very positive experience and I highly recommend it.

I have been a member at Derby City Mixed Martial Arts now for over 2 years. The experience here has been literally life changing. I dont feel like Im just apart of a gym but a family. The owner Derek Cissell is one of the best people I know and he genuinely cares about every member of this gym. The instruction here is top notch and caters to people of all skill levels in all disciplines. Quality BJJ instructors and very welcoming atmosphere. Students here have an excellent understanding of techniques and titrate their energy well to match their partners skill level and body type. Rolls were fluid, but challenging and fast paced. Any smaller women should feel at ease here, I never felt in danger of being injured or smashed. Looking forward to visiting again, any locals would be lucky to have regular access to this academy.

This gym is no joke! As someone who only goes around 1-2 times a week, I am seriously impressed with the instructors desire to see everyone grow in their abilities and teach at a high level. This gym not only trains world class BJJ competitors, but also gives entry-level accessibility for people who just do it as a hobby or way to stay fit. The group of guys and gals that train here are friendly and Ive always felt safe training here. The rate seems fair for how much you get access to.
