This school is awful! Teachers are unprofessional and the principal does not know how to handle serious situations. It is an unsafe atmosphere for children.

This is our second year at Self Development Academy - East Mesa Campus. First and foremost, the staff is amazing. They go above and beyond to support students and families. I have been so impressed with the way our teachers have pushed my daughter to go above and beyond in the curriculum. The small class size is phenomenal not only because of the capabilities within the classroom and ability for teachers to really focus on each student but also because we really do become a little family. So grateful to have this school in our lives and so excited to watch my daughters educational journey flourish.

This school is amazing. I have been here for almost 9 years and Its been really good. The teachers here are so nice and caring and they help you a lot. Right now during covid-19, the school has us in masks with plastic borders around our desks which are spaced apart. This school is by far one of the best schools to be at.

The East Mesa campus is amazing! I was told my Kindergartener would be reading by Christmas, and I had a hard time believing that. She was reading by October! I love how the class sizes are small and the teachers take time to help each child in their own learning style. The staff has handled the pandemic incredibly- doing everything by WHO and CDC standards while still communicating with parents to understand their comfort levels. This is not your average school- my child is thriving and I look forward to my other kiddos enrolling in the years to come. So thankful for the enthusiasm and grace of Mrs.Sipe and the dedication of Jennifer Connolly.

This is my eleventh year teaching at SDA. I have taught kindergarten, first, third, and fourth grade at this school. This school is an amazing student- centered school. The students actually learn to start reading in four weeks in kindergarten! The curriculum is advanced and rigorous, setting your child up for advance classes in high school. Being a teacher here for so long, I’m a believer in the SDA philosophy!

Luckily my family found this top ranking school when my children were very young. They first started at the preschool which gave them a solid foundation before they began kindergarten. They are now in high school taking honors and higher level classes thanks to the higher level math, science, and English classes they took at Self Development. They attended K-8 at Self Development and the administration and teachers made sure that they were given what they needed to be successful. They are very different children, but their individual needs were met. My family is proud to be Self Development alumni.

Worst school EVER! Teachers are always against the students. Principal has no idea how to run the school. I had asked several times to speak to the owner of the school and was never able to and ignored. I have emails back and forth with the principal and teachers regarding serious situation that needed to be addressed but was brushed under the rug. The police have been notified on several occasions about a teacher putting hands on the children. NEVER trust the teachers here, trust your children!!!! Would NOT recommend!!!!!!

I am a life long learner at Self Development Academy, and now also a staff member at this amazing school. I attended SDA starting in Kindergarten, and continued all the way until my eighth-grade year.Initially my mom enrolled me at this school because it offered an after-school program that ran until six pm, and she worked a full-time job. Even up to this day we talk about how lucky we are to have stumbled across this amazing school that has provided us both with so many opportunities. Thanks to this amazing school I entered high school with three of my four high school math classes already finished, and a very wide understanding of science. I also continued my advanced education by placing into all honors classes, and receiving college credit for dual enrollment and AP classes!I graduated from High school 12th in my class out of 1500 students, and I am majoring in child development and pre-pediatric medicine. My whole life I was taught that anything is possible if you put your mind to it, and this is now becoming a reality. I am blessed I was consistently pushed at such a young age to always do my absolute best.

I love their new mindfulness program! They teach empathy and compassion. What school has a designated staff member addressing mindfulness, bullying and emotional regulation? I remember when I was a kid, people that bullied often did so because they were in schools with a weak sense of community and were insecure to begin with. I cant believe that this school is equipping these kids with skills that improve their confidence. Their focus on compassion and empathy has made the school a really welcoming place for kids. One thing though, since its new, their teachers are still learning how to lead mindfulness practices. But I dont know of many schools that have a program that makes sure kids learn to be kind, how to handle anger, and how to do make others feel good.

I used to get bullied here a lot when I was little. The teachers are nice but the students are absolutely terrible. Students would steal, curse and physically and emotionally hurt “weaker” students (I have experience). In conclusion the academics are good, teachers are encouraging but students act in very rude manners due to the lack of teachers teaching respect to students.

My two girls were bullied at this school. I was told there was a no tolerance for bullying. They lied. There were two girls that stood up for my girls and after we left they started getting bullied . I dont recommend this school to anyone. I really hope they make a change for the other kids there. Thank you

Good school, however be prepared for a bunch of ill formed fund raising. It gets old after awhile and I while I know it goes to the school some kind of information as to what percentage of what goes where would be nice. Especially if they are going to keep sending family members emails for support. While my son thrives on the challenge from the advance curriculum I find it annoying and almost not worth it. Lunches are also $3.00 with no nutritional options really. I would hope for $3.00 there could be better options. $125 activity fee. Goes towards the P.E. equipment. Do you really go throught hat much equipment every year? I can understand that on a high school level. Overall, it is a give and take, but more of a you give.

I had our chcildren at Self Development total of 5 years. I was unimpressed for the majority of the time. They school is inconsistent with their “extra” classes. They would begin programs and not finish them such as Spanish, art, computer tech, and Latin. Teachers would leave half way through the year and parents would not be informed until after the fact. Once, I had my first grader tell me that his first grade teachers wasn’t coming back, I thought the sub for a few days was because she was sick. They test a ton but barley use state reading assessments such as DIBLES ( Basic Literacy Skills) or ERDA ( early reading diagnostic assessments). I got little knowledge of Common Core instruction was being taught or taught at all and when I asked the teachers they just said that they teach a grade ahead which is no answer at all. This by no means is the teachers fault, but the administrations. I had numerous meetings with the administrators and nothing had chhanged or will change. This school talks big, but with no big results. I didn’t know what I was missing with the public school district until we left.

I was at this school for 3 years. (3rd to 5th) I have been to quite a few schools in this part of Mesa (85205). It’s all for the same reason RACIAL PROFILING! All of the schools in this part of Mesa are majority White. Most of the teachers are rasict. The principal dosnt do much for the school . The school is basically ran by the secretary. (Mrs. Salvitori) Mrs. Vernetta is one of the most rasict teachers I have ever met she would always sit kids out that were not White. I got in trouble for picking up a brick while the other kids were throughing them. They don’t even have a proper nurse. The kids are very religious with there Mormon religion and with their rasict ways. I am Latino and Black and I was treated with absolute disrespect. I am not from Arizona and I am totally shocked on how I was treated. (WAY DIFFERIENT THEN THE EAST COST) Bottom line, this school is waaaaayyy different then how they speak of it!
