My kid went here for the 2021 summer intensive it was definetly a good place for dancing but defintely not all the training. If you go here before you have some technique youll definelty be left behind and the teachers wont correct you, but my child did enjoy the classes. Ignoring that problem would definetly go again some time.

I wrote a review before, then I deleted it hoping I will change my mind, but unfortunately it is even worse than before. My daughter got “into” the summer intensive for 2020, of course with corona there was only the virtual option in which I do not believe. I tried getting a refund to which I received rude replies. I did a charge back and it didn’t happen. I was made to pay another registration fee yet again with rude tones and replies in every email. I registered for 3 weeks specifically to be part of the performance. The clarity of which weeks are mandatory to participate in in order to participate in performance weren’t clear. I was under the impression my daughter will attend the village location so she can experience that neighbourhood, instead we were placed in busy midtown. The address of the location was wrong on the website. The items necessary for ALL classes were not clearly provided, links weren’t given so my child, who was only 8 and not experienced, came to her first week not fully prepared. Not one photo was sent, not one text was sent about how she is doing over 3 weeks. There was zero feedback about anything. Joffrey uses their name, which I have no idea how they have a positive one, to get people to spend $ in the summer. They provide zero attention to dancers who they know are temporarily there. Anyone who is not in the front does not receive attention. My daughter has witnessed bullying between students, received zero attention and only learned because she put in the effort. According to her, the teachers were decent but she never came home and raved about anyone or anything, unlike with all other places she has attended. Joffrey uses people for money, the entire contract for summer intensive was longer than a dictionary. Do not attend this school. I also wanted to add that 3 weeks passed and I asked my daughter do you like this other school or joffrey and she said she hated joffrey and wishes I never sent her there because the entire experience turned her off from ballet. No idea how an organisation can function this way.

I love this place! I am in the Youth Ballet program and it feels like my second home. The teachers are very nice and professional and I have the best ballet classes in my life! I love learning new ballet steps. Not only that, but I get the opportunity to perform twice a year (Nutcracker in the fall/winter and the Spring Performance) and to participate in the Summer Intensive and perform at the end of the Intensive as well. I would highly recommend this amazing ballet school to anyone who wants to take ballet classes.Adding on to the review from a year ago, the teachers are doing a fantastic job at teaching classes on zoom. They are bringing the high-quality class experience into our homes. They even did an online performance for the summer intensive. 2020 is a really hard year, and the teachers at Joffrey are making me forget about my anxiety and focus on my passion. The classes are really progressive, and we slowly move to more advanced steps. I am currently in 2A and I love taking classes 3 times a week. 😍 Joffrey will ALWAYS be my home studio.

I have sent my children there for four years in a row from NYC, to LA and San Francisco. Each time their dancing has improved dramatically. My kids were provided with superb teachers and there performance opportunities could not be better. They encouraged passion for dance and really made a huge difference in my kids work ethic. Thank you Joffrey and I will be sending my kids back again and again. Also, they made life long friends from all over the world.

I have two little girl that have each been dancing for more than three years. They attended a Joffrey audition and were each given a 50% scholarship. It was amazing. They could not have been more thrilled. One of my girls does hip hop and the other does classical ballet. They could not be more different in their love of dance. Joffrey has tons of summer dance choices and each girl loved their teachers and were inspired by their experiences. The teachers really took the time to know my girls and help them grow as dancers. My girls loved this and talk about their dance experience all of the time. After this great experience they are coming back again.

Hello all,My son Caleb attended your summer of hip-hop program this past summer and we were absolutely blown away by the professionalism and skill level of your choreographers. We were impressed with all of the staff for the Summer of Hip-Hop program. From day one my son felt welcomed into the Joffrey program. He had the opportunity this summer to connect with professionals in the industry he continues to work on projects with as well as fellow dancers he has developed long term friendships with. The Joffrey summer programs provide not only a great dance education but tools and resources these dancers need for this industry. We are looking forward to an equally amazing experience next summer.

They are ignoring emails and calls for refunds for the summer intensive. They seem to think that the money I paid for an in-person class for my daughter is theirs to keep even though the in-person has been cancelled. They believe offering a few hours of zoom classes a day is the same thing? Totally unprofessional and unethical

We signed up for summer musical theater intensive in 2019, which there was no audition process, no definition on the dance skill required. We have to sign long document on return policy online form so there was no way you could get refunded. My daughter, a NYC performing high school student, had all hope to learn but felt defeated. The class was unsuitable for her dance level. After watching week end performance, then it was clear that they were using Joffrey Ballet as a brand, which the ballet school was a separate identity, and NYC experience as a draw to get students from other states and and countries, and pick up extra local students to be profitable. For price tag 860 a week, she learned very little dance, and her desire to perform was diminished. Summer camp should be a safe and supportive place to learn. Her experience was the opposite. Every business needs to make profit and this was tricky how they set it up.

My daughter attended the program in Georgia. We had never done a sleep-away intensive before, so I was very happy with the experience. She is 11, so I liked that this was on at the university and not in a big city. Classes were a good size and not too crowded. We were very happy with her instructors and the level of training that she received. We will be returning this year. I would recommend this program.

Last year I went to Joffrey West in Los Angeles and Joffrey in San Francisco. When I went I was kind of nervous because it is known to have great talent. On my first day I walk in a felt very welcome it was a very friendly environment and I flourished in it. I loved getting all the new info and corrections. One of the classes that I really enjoyed was Bradley Shelvers. He had such a good opinion on making it in the dance world. He also gave tips that made me grow as a dancer. Another class I enjoyed was Allison Debonas class. In her class see really pushed me. Also she helped me with pointe because at the time I had only been on for a year. Also when I came back to my studio all my teachers noticed my growth and how much stronger I was.

Great dance program, but TERRIBLE HOUSING! DO NOT HOUSE HERE! Way to expensive, unsanitary and unsafe.Dorms DO NOT look like they do in the photos Joffrey places on their websites. For over $1,500 my daughter was placed in a dorm that had rats, 1 bathroom with TEN GIRLS in a hallway, with pieces of ceiling falling into their rooms, broken pluming, etc.Students that were placed into the apartments had to deal with a mosquito infestation, no A/C, no cable, barely any lighting, min. furniture, leakage, AND A CARBON MONOXIDE LEAK!!!The RAS have yet to help these students with their mosquito infestation, and almost avoided the carbon leak (no carbon monoxide alarm placed in apartment before move in, students installed themselves).I do not feel safe having my daughter stay in the housing that Joffrey provides. Please place your daughter/son in your own housing!!

I have had my children involved with the Joffrey Ballet School for over five years. It is more than just a dance school, they cultivate a passion for dance that transcends all aspects of life. My children have learned discipline, control, and an ethic of striving to achieve a goal. The director Jo Matos cares about each and every dancer. They have communicated every detail and it is a joy to be part of the Joffrey Ballet School. If you do not believe me take a free Trial class. That is right, FREE. Then make an educated decision prior to enrolling. Their staff is highly professional and care tremendously about the dancers. Ohh and there is a Live Baby Grand Piano played in each and every class. This type of quality and attention to detail cannot be found elsewhere. Also, the childrens classes are capped at 12 dancers. This is just amazing.

This is the worst place to send your child. It costs a fortune and the money is really all you Joffrey cares about. There is no communication with parents and they constantly make mistakes and take no responsibility for them. My daughter signed up for 7 weeks. After arriving at her assigned dorm on the day of the gay pride parade, walking for about a mile with 7 weeks worth of belongings ( because all the streets were closed), we were told there was a mistake and we were at the wrong dorm. She was however allowed to stay for one week with 2 roommates who were 5 years younger than her and didnt speak english. It was awful. Then she was forced to move to another dorm the following week. RA didnt call parents if she was not in the dorm at night. They call the child, a 15 year old. Class schedule constantly changing and in fact no classed the last 3 days of the final week. Needless to say paid for a full week. Also paid $500 for uniforms that never arrived. Horrible dangerous place. Dont send your child to Joffrey!

I went to Joffrey as one more place to add to my resume before auditioning for jobs. It’s funny how after 20years of ballet being my absolute life, I can honestly say The Joffrey ballet school has turned me off ballet for the rest of my life.I had planned to stay at Joffrey for about two years however left towards the end of the first semester for numerous amounts of reasons...Probably the most important thing to point out first was the carbon monoxide leak in the arranged housing. If this wasnt bad enough, teachers had no empathy or understanding whatsover that me and other housemates had spent hours the night before class trying to move all our belongings across New York, they were too concerned as to our whereabouts and why we hadnt made it to class that morning. My teacher didnt give me the time of day to explain either. Here is a school that people rave about, yet due to the number of housing issues I dealt with during my time there I struggled to even get there which was where all my parents money was going to. It’s also important to mention that no one would come and fix the carbon monoxide leak due to the fact that Joffrey apparently owed so much money. Here is a school that my parents as well as many other parents took extreme lengths to get me there and why did I have to deal with this?? When youve spent a week in a house with a carbon monoxide leak and people are starting to feel sick how is anyone focused on ballet anymore? The whole purpose of being at this place and in this country?Let’s backtrack to my first day, first class, I won’t mention the teachers name, to save her reputation but let me tell you there was no warm welcome to the few new students in the class, she instead complained in front of us about how big the class had become. What a way to welcome new people who have travelled across the world and spent thousands of dollars to be there and she’s pointing out in front of us how annoyed she is at the fact there are new people taking up extra space they dont have in the small studio. My last class, I had another teacher yelling at me majority of the time as I didnt know the choreography to her dance which the rest of the year had all learnt the semester before. How even any professional dancer can go into a new class and be expected to suddenly know choreography off the tops of their head within the first minute of being there and not even being shown first is completely beyond me.Although I found many of the dancers at this school really lovely people I can’t leave out the fact that one of the main things that turned me away from this school was the absolute cattiness of a number of the students in my year. Obviously ballet is a competitive industry and you can’t expect to get by if you can’t deal with that, but here we have a somewhat professional school with the same group of dancers sitting out most days because they are too lazy to actually dance so they would sit at the front of the class day after day whispering and laughing at everyone who is actually trying to have a go. For weeks that I was there clearly being talked about in front of my face I began to think I had a lot to be intimated about, yet when I finally had the chance to watch some of these girls dance they were the most hopeless of them all, yet somehow they still have the hide to laugh and make fun of people who were actually a lot better than them. I didnt want to be at a place with this sort of environment, it was high school drama and it shouldnt have been going on in a professional full-time school. For years I would hear Joffrey Ballet School and think of its name in shining lights, yet you just don’t realise what its really like on the inside until you’ve experienced it for yourself. Although there were a few teachers at this school that actually encouraged me and I felt improvement in their classes, this place was a complete waste of money for my parents. If you have any desire to send your child to a good ballet school, this is not the place, it was highly unprofessional, disorganised and a complete joke.

This is a review of the Summer Intensive dorms. My 13 year old was placed in a single room in an apartment with 3 other bedrooms (7 other girls) in a walkup in the west Village on Grove Street. This is a desired place for students who will be assigned to dance at actual Joffrey studios because it is walking distance (she danced at Pearl Studios on 34th street and 9th). This building has several floors of students, and chaperones. Aside from the shabby appearance, and no decent A/C, there were MICE!! And when the girls complained, they were reprimanded because everyone else has them too. The apartment had a hardly working shower (for 7 girls who had been dancing all day). Most days, the water would not drain properly, so the girls had to shower in a different apartment, which meant there were 16 girls in line to use a shower. The chaperone was in a completely different apartment on another floor. The girls who were 14 and older were allowed to go out on their own, leaving my daughter, a 13 year old alone in the apartment in the evenings. The supervision was inadequate. A chaperone did accompany the girls on the subway in the morning and evening, but overall, there was absolutely not enough supervision. As far as the dancing, over time, my daughter began to speak fondly of her experience with the various choreographers. If you are considering sending your child here, I recommend getting a hotel and a family member to stay nearby. The living aspect of the summer intensive is atrocious. Even the food is Cosi, delivered in a box on the floor outside the door of your mice infested apartment. Dont let your kid live here. It was so disturbing. If you have the money, send your child to a camp with nicer accommodations where they can be safe. Otherwise, plan on staying somewhere in the city.

(FOR ALL BLACK DANCERS/GIRLS) I did not have a good experience here. As a young african american girl I stand outside of the box. I do not naturally fit into the ballet world. For all black dancers out there you know and understand the struggle of people always assuming when you say, Im a dancer that you are talking about hip-hop or some form of street dance. When you can look someone in their eyes and say I do ballet and their jaws drop its a moment of breaking the stereotypes us black dancers are put in. Its a moment of pride unlike any other to be specific. I think where the ballet world goes wrong is that they do not understand the view points of black girls who do ballet. We dont do ballet because it only sounds good to be outside the norm. We do ballet because just like any other girl who loves it we love the art of it, the history, the long lines of a ballerinas legs, the beautiful arch her toes make when she pointed them, the story she tells as she performs a variation from swan lake in her pointe shoes. Thats why we love ballet. Misty Copeland, Shannon Harkins, Aesha Ash, Miranda DePrince, and more are all black ballet dancers who have paved the way for young girls like me. Without them there was no hope for a black ballerina that people would know about. Here is where my complaints with Joffrey come in. More often then not I am placed in the back of my class without explanation. If I stand in the front Im asked to switch spots with one of my peers or asked to move in general. While I am given corrections here and there a majority of the time Ill go without any. Whenever it is time for either Nutcracker or Fantasia I am never given the chance to have a significant role. Once I was in a level before with girls that were a level below me and moved up. When showtime came they were given bigger parts and some even moved ahead of me. Everyday for class I would come in ready to work and be noticed and give my all, but instead those who missed 2-3 classes and forgot the exercise were complimented and corrected over me. It was strange because I felt this mostly during my weekday classes. As a black girl attending Joffrey they never gave me the opportunity my white peers were given. In class I was left to feel alone a lot and during performances I was left to play unrecognizable roles or roles that were second to my white peers main roles. Every time I would walk in and see other black girls in the children program I would smile to them, but also sympathize because I knew what it would be like as they progressed at joffrey. Theyd be just another brown girl filling the quota for diversity to build a good reputation for a failing department. Im sorry to say, but if you are a black girl with dreams of being a ballerina I dont suggest Joffrey. You are better off going to Ailey or ABT because at least you know you have a chance and you will be rewarded for your handwork. Also not to mention, but Joffreys training has definitely not been the best lately. Out of the whole entire youth program there is only one teacher I could say 100% is a great teacher. This is not about messing with Joffreys reputation, but it is about putting a problem out there and a call for help and trying to make a change by raising the awareness of unequal opportunity for black girls at joffrey ballet school nyc.
