If you have always wanted to learn Arabic the New York Arabic School is your one stop. Tarek is an great professor, he is very personable and takes time to ensure that you are comprehending what you are learning. Much better than taking a language class at an institution. Being a native speaker his technique in teaching helps his students to retain the information instead of the traditional way of learning a language. All you need to do is take one class and you will be hooked.

If I could give 10 stars, I would... Tarek is such a kind, funny, gentle and PATIENT teacher! I already can recognize letters and figure out words. If you are looking to seriously learn Arabic, this is THE place! The classes are SO interactive and motivational. Tarek is such a wonderful teacher - he will repeat pronunciations 100 times over again to help you really get it. There is no pressure, no guilt - a lot of fun and exciting!! The classes go by in a flash because they are very engaging.

I am writing this recommendation because Tarek is an exceptional teacher. I have been taking lessons with him for 6 months and I am truly enjoying them! I was a complete beginner and was expecting an impossible task. To my surprise, I found that it is completely possible to learn, even though I feel I am not always a good student. Tarek got me over my initial intimidation and has been very encouraging and supportive. He taught me not only grammar and vocabulary, but also incorporated exercises and memorization into the lessons with the purpose of giving me a proper foundation in MSA before proceeding with a dialect. This makes the lessons very efficient and after 6 months, we have covered quite a lot of material. Tarek is very patient and whenever I do not understand something, he takes the time to explain. The lessons are very focused and they always seem to fly by.Having written many books, Tarek has a wealth of knowledge of the Arabic language – whatever questions I have, he is always able to explain everything, with helpful context or reasons behind something. This makes the lessons very interesting – I started the classes because I wanted to learn to speak Arabic, but I am now fascinated with the language itself and its unique traits. I am also learning about the culture and background around the language, which is very inspiring. I feel that Tarek is truly interested in my progress. Besides being extremely knowledgeable, Tarek is a very welcoming, kind and caring person and we often exchange stories. I am very lucky to have found him.

I am so glad I found Tarek’s classes via a random google search! His approach to teaching Arabic is very effective and I feel I have learned and retained a lot. The book for the class has lots of helpful exercises and I especially like that he teaches about Arabic culture in order to help his students better understand the language. I will continue classes with Tarek as long as possible and highly recommend his courses to anyone seeking to learn Arabic.

Ive been Tareks student for a year now, and it has been an exceptional experience. He is incredibly patient and takes the time to go over things, making sure you understand everything that youre doing, even if it means repeating things youve covered previously. He is a very comprehensive teacher, as he provides cultural and historical context to the language lessons, as well as some side lessons on Arab culture and history (which I personally find fascinating and enhances the learning). A year later, I can say that I am very pleased with my progress with the language, and I am confident that continuing to learn with him will help me with my ultimate goal. !شكرا جزيلا صديقي

I have been taking one-on-one lessons in Modern Standard Arabic with Tarek at the Arabic School of New York for about 6 months and I hope to continue as long as he will have me! I look forward to my weekly lessons for many reasons, as the time we spend going over texts and grammatical concepts is jam-packed with new information, fascinating lessons about Arabic itself and the Arab world if you are not that familiar, and learning tools to get better (via vocab, reading exercises, etc) on my own. Im really happy with progress over the last half-year and thanks to Tareks teaching, I am confident that it will only increase as I continue to put in more work.Tareks knowledge is nothing short of encyclopedic and you get the feeling that theres very little he would not be able to tell you about Arabic - yes, I mean, the whole language in all its dialects. Plus, Tarek is incredibly kind and thoughtful about what is going on in students lives. The fact that he cares about students progress and well-being shines through (even over skype!).Some details:- in my lessons, we have studied from a variety of texts, written and/or compiled by Tarek. My main textbook was written by him (he has written many, including books on a vast array of dialects) and the book is a great springboard for investigating different grammatical points. Weve read a religious text, a news article, a dialogue and written a biography of me using key vocabulary!- Tarek takes the time to get to know your goals and reasons for learning Arabic and then tailors the lessons around those goals in a deep way. If some historical explanation is too academic for your purposes, he will gloss it and explain its significance in a way that makes sense to your reasons for studying.-In the same vein, if some concept is essential for you to know as a prospective visitor to Arab countries (e.g. greetings) you will drill it and Tarek will emphasize it. If he feels you are not meeting your potential, he will find a way to encourage you positively to work on it.Anyone who finds Tarek finds a once-in-a-lifetime teacher!Thank you!

I have been taking Arabic lessons with Tarek Mahfouz (Beginner and Accelerated Elementary MSA) for about half a year now and I am very pleased with the quality of instruction. He is an excellent teacher and his methods work (we apply repetition, lessons on grammar, readings, and a variety of practice examples each class, to name a few). Our class meets twice a week, and they are quite intensive and challenging, but I can definitely see the progress. The professor is an interesting character with a deep knowledge of the Arabic language, dialects, culture, (and other subjects as well!) with a good sense of humor to boot. I wholeheartedly recommend this school.

HelloI enrolled in a basic Arabic class. It was meant to be present class, but because of Covid19 the professor turned the class into an online class. I was lost my first class because I could not see my professor screen. There were technical difficulties out of my reach and my professor reach too. I was able to take eventually 3 classes and I could not continue the rest because I been sick and I notified my professor. When I wanted to arrange my remaining classes. I was informed that the first class that I never took, since I never saw a image of my screen was used or gone. Look, I came after that lost class out of my way to buy the book in person!!! and continue my classes without the need of my professor screen. I want to finish my remaining classes or a refund for them. I can expose you because I know that any institution has to have ethics. Specially, if you plan to make money from people. Otherwise, this will make you look like a fake school. I am not shy to review the Arabic School of New York in different platforms. My professor is Tarek Mahfouz he is a great professor and he knows how to teach well when I was able to have my book on hand and I was able to see his screen. I repeat, I registered for a class in person not online, but things change and the school policy in this instance is irrelevant. Thanks.Edgar

With years of experience, Professor Mahfouz has mastered teaching Arabic. He has an impressive system of foundation building that he seems able to adjust depending on the skill set of a specific student. In the process of taking private lessons with him, my understanding of grammar even in English has developed greatly. Mr. Mahfouz has an extensive knowledge of the differences between each Arabic dialect and how/why each stems from the MSA Arabic. Excellent experience learning with him.

Most Arabic classes claim that you will speak Arabic fluently after a few classes. When I called Tariq, he was honest and said that it would take time. Rather than blindly parrot basic conversation after him over and over again, Tariq focuses heavily on Arabic grammar and vocabulary so that we build our own sentences. No lesson is ever the same, and each lesson is new and challenging. I promise you, you will feel the gears in your head turn for each class. There is a difference between knowing Arabic and knowing how to teach Arabic-- Tariq is the latter. He will throw a lot of information at you but will also explain everything and answer all questions. He is very good at gauging when to patiently wait as you find the answer versus when to step in and help. Since he is busy, the registration and schedule policies are somewhat strict. Dont be flakey about scheduling.Tariq is very professional in that he focuses only on teaching the language and will only touch upon culture or religion if it is relevant to the current lesson. If you want to learn Arabic effectively, I would definitely recommend Tariq.

Tarek is absolutely amazing!! I didnt know what to expect when I first signed up, but its been a wonderful experience since day one. Small classes sizes ensure you get the attention and focus you need to really understand the material. Weve started from the basics and are making great progress every week. Tarek creates a relaxed, friendly environment, so much so, I often dont want to leave when class is over! I highly recommend that anyone interested in learning a language should absolutely do so with The Arabic School of NY!

Tarek has guided me through the Arabic language in a way I can understand and relate to. It has been a real challenge for a monolingual person to take on such a language in a rush. I am heading to Morocco in a few weeks and I can already read and pronounce the words even though I havent memorized what their translation means. He has taken the time to teach me the information that I will need to progress on my own and provided me with the tools to continue my studies when I leave town. He has been patient and very helpful in dealing with my shortcomings. I have taken Spanish 1 4 times and know more in Arabic than the months of Spanish classes I have spent time and money trying to learn. In less than 2 weeks😊 I have been meeting with him almost everyday and have been working so much have not had time to study. I listen to his recordings to get the pronunciation better and feel like I can arrive in Morocco with enough to get around when even the letters arent the same. So very happy I spent the time and money to meet with him and feel I would be lost without his instructions. Thank you Tarek!!!!

Tariq is a really great teacher. He was highly recommended by a close friend. Tariq is very knowledgeable and patient. He focuses on repetition of simple rules. He makes it so that u dont necessarily need a background in semitic languages, though personally I do. I have made a ton of progress in a short period of time with his teaching methods. That said, he does look a little scary, but dont let that stop you. Haha.
