Practicing Wing Chun at Gotham Martial Arts has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. Master Kwok is an attentive instructor with an eye for detail whose teachings are not limited to combat. Ive become a more focused, goal oriented individual under his tutelage. Joining the school has been a positive experience and Ive lost more than 50 lbs participating in class for the last two years. I highly recommend this program to anyone who is interested in a practical system for self defense.

I was in New York for a few days because my wife had a work conference so I decided to pay Sifu William Kwok a visit at his school. I was immediately welcomed with open arms to join in on a couple of classes, with payment of course. As an instructor visiting another school I was treated with the utmost respect by Sifu Kwok and his students. The training atmosphere and environment was very good and his students were very skillful. The school is clean, tidy and classes were very organized. I would recommend 100% anyone looking to learn Kungfu to join the school there!

I love this place! Ive been coming to Gotham Martial Arts to study Practical Wing Chun Kung Fu for almost two years, and I have to say the atmosphere here is like a second home to me.The instructors here are amazing! Sifu Kwok has an attentiveness to detail that seems rare in todays distracted world, and his dedication to the success of his students, paired with a very organized and structured curriculum, creates an atmosphere conducive to optimized learning. As his standards are high, it naturally follows that everyone teaching at the school is very knowledgeable, patient, friendly, and fantastic at imparting their knowledge. The school truly embodies its mottos, Improvement of Mind and Body, Ethical Self-Conduct, and Unity Among Members which are printed across the top beams of the dojo where people entering can easily read them. It is emphasized that one should use their heads when practicing self-defense. This flows into conducting oneself ethically, and learning what amount of force is necessary to mitigate a potential threat (learning that, perhaps, it isnt necessary to break this persons arm and blind him/her, maybe I can just put my arms up non-threateningly and say Sorry! [Didnt mean to bump you]!, or even, Get away from me!).Ethical self-conduct also falls in line with Unity Among Members in that there is a strong emphasis within the school that the fellow students are your training partners: treat them with respect, both inside and outside the classroom. The classes are all mixed-level, and within the curriculum, everyone is encouraged to work with one another, whether a first-day beginner to a seasoned, 10-year practitioner. Because the school and its members are collectively interested in each individuals improvement and learning, this creates a safe space that fosters empathy for everyone. As for the physical setting, GMA has a nice front lobby for checking in/ collecting your attendance card, clean facilities for the changing rooms (one room for male, one for female). The dojo itself has nice padded floors, as well as the walls with many mirrors on 2 sides to check your stances-- all of which allow for a very helpful learning environment! All in all, I highly recommend this place!

What a great decision this was! Everyone really encourages one another, explanations are thorough, & Sifu Kwok ensures he is involved every step of the way. I will definitely be continuing my journey here for the long run.

Practical Wing Chun has given me the confidence that I was always looking for in a martial art .It is unique in its progression and teaching and I am happily compelled to continue .I would recommend practical wing chun to anyone who has tried or wishes to try a martial art , one that will give you a true science of self defense and the discipline that has come down tru the centuries in the chinese culture .

There are several things that make Practical Wing Chun stand out as an incredible place to train.1) Approachable, friendly, patient instructors: the entire instructing staff is not only incredibly knowledgable in their craft but they approach everyone with respect, humility, and genuine interest.2) Organized curriculum: as a climbing instructor and former middle school teacher having a standardized curriculum and an established pedagogy is near and dear to my heart. It is evident that thought, care, and not a small amount of critical analysis went into the creation and continual refinement of the skills taught and teaching practices observed.3) Atmosphere: the physical space is always kept clean but more importantly Sifu Kwok and the instructors foster a safe space for genuine learning. Instead of competing with each other, students and instructors are encouraged to learn from each other regardless of experience level. All in all, an amazing place to train!!!
