My 5 year old son has a lot of energy and a difficult time focusing. We started at KAT Tae Kwon Do about 3 months ago, and he loves it! Master Shim is patient, passionate, and hilarious! I love going and watching him gain focus and confidence. He sometimes gets upset if he cannot do something exactly right (and usually cries) but Master Shim gives genuine encouragement and he tries again. Great place! Thank you.

My son Tyler started classes when he was 5 and has been training for 6 years now. He has earned his second degree black belt through a lot of hard work. The physical conditioning and agility he has attained carries over into the other sports he participates in. KAT promotes respect for others and good sportsmanship. Top notch program. Top notch instructors. We are very fortunate to have a martial arts school of this level in Olathe.

This place is very good and they helped me a lot after a personal tragedy. The cost is not minimal but it does reflect the value. They’ve even worked with me and my fixed budget to be reasonable. I dedicated myself to this art for a few years ago and I earned my black belt with Master Kwak and Master Shim’s guidance. It’s been great for my kids too and Master Shim is like part of my family now. I’m very thankful I found KAT and it helped save my life and give me my confidence back.

We have had great experiences at KAT Tae Kwon Do over the past year. Mstr Shim and Mstr Kwak are patient with the students, but they also know to push them when theyre not working hard enough to master a discipline. The instructional price is reasonable compared with other studios in the area. I also appreciate the text reminders on days we have lessons. I would definitely recommend this Tae Kwon Do studio to others who are interested and seeking a studio.

Three suggestions to anyone enrolling at KAT tae kwon do.1) They will present you a 3-year contract. Their contract allows you to cancel after 1-year. Thats an unreasonably long commitment for an activity that you or your child might not want to commit to. Before you sign the contract, just cross that out and change it the commitment to something that works for you, like 6-months. Dont ask if you can do it, just do it. They will still make money with a shorter term.2) They will require 90-days notice to cancel the contract. Thats also unreasonable. This is not the type of business that needs 3-months to absorb membership changes. Cross out 90 days and change it something fair like 30 days.3) As others have said, take a photo of the contract when you sign it.The program is great for small children. Just recognize that few kids actually develop enough interest to stick with it for longer than a few months.

Master Shim is always energetic and motivated. My wife just started taking classes for the first time and she absolutely loves all the curriculum and adores Master Shim. They do parties, camps, and other events that brings both schools together giving students the opportunity to meet more friends. Overall, Ive been satisfied with this school and their programs - especially the many self-defense portion that they teach.

I attended KAT Tae Kwon Do for 3 years and in that time I was able to get my black belt - in Tae Kwon Do - , and my Orange belt in Self Defense. Everyone who works there is very nice and extremely helpful. I also had the pleasure to help teach many lessons and loved being able to see all of the students get more and more belts as they progressed. They allow anybody of any age to attend and participate in classes as long as they have a uniform and belt. They have different classes for different age groups/belts, so there isnt a 6 year old attending the adult or black belt class and weighing everyone else down. I first joined when I was 10 years old, and although there may be times where it seems it is too hard, if you push through and persevere you can do amazing things.

Master Kwak developed this style and does not compromise on quality. They teach children (and adults) respect and honor. I have trained under him for more than 10 years and I highly recommend him and the school.

** READ YOUR CONTRACT CAREFULLY BEFORE SIGNING AND KEEP A COPY BEFORE YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT HANDING OVER YOUR BANK DETAILS**Make sure you read your contract carefully (and keep it) and stipulate you only want to sign up for 1 year and will give one months notice to cancel.Initially we were told that cancellation would require 1 months notice and that we were signing a 1 year contract. Well when we did go to cancel after more than a year and a half at this place that 1 month magically turned into 3! They told me I had signed a 3 year contract!! Who signs there kid up to an activity for 3 years?!! Im also hearing they are trying this on with many more people and its getting harder and harder to get out of the contract. Our child enjoyed this for a while, but boy do they like to collect money, testing is an additional $70 a month and frankly I dont think they give a dam whether your child is ready for it or not they just want your money.Wont be returning with my youngest.

BUYER BEWARE – DO NOT SIGN CONTRACTPlease read this review before signing up for KAT Taekwondo. Learn from my mistakes. I have also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (#12372190) because I believe some of their practices (specifically the contract) to be fraudulent. First of all, Master Shim is awesome! She is great with the kids and my son really enjoyed her classes. Master Kwak on other hand is the opposite. First of all, if you do sign up, make a copy, take a picture of the contract you are singing. There were things written into my contract, specifically the 90 day cancellation clause, which was not there when I signed it. I would not have signed a contract that required 90 days written notice for an extracurricular activity.Second, when you sign up, Master Kwak will talk about the monthly cost associated ($109) and that’s it. He doesn’t mention that each belt promotion is another $65 - $80 (every 2 months), sparing gear, which needs to be bought after the orange belt is another $235 and then all the additional expenses that you incur. Pretty big investment, over $1,800 the first year and close to $1,500 every other year. Maybe I should have been more inquisitive to the overall cost, and I guess I was too trusting in him to disclose that information.Third, Birthday Parties. I signed up to have my sons 10th birthday at KAT. Once again, Master Shim did an amazing job with the party and showed my son an incredible time. But unfortunately, Master Kwak was also there (are you starting to see a theme?). Have you ever been to a Timeshare seminar, with the high pressured sales people? For the parents, the birthday party was kind of like that. My favorite part was when they “demanded”/asked all the parents, “if you have not been back to speak with Master Kwak in his office, please do so now”. From what I understand, Kwak put the full court press on parents to have their son join KAT immediately. This is supposed to be a Childs 10 birthday party, but unfortunately Master Kwak used it as another money making opportunity. I understand handing out fliers advertising KAT, but I didn’t pay $150 (cost for hosting the birthday – nothing included – cake, ice cream, plates, napkins etc. were purchase by me before the party) for Kwak to high pressure sale many of my friends and relatives. So all in all, Master Shim is great. If it was just her I would give it 5 stars. But unfortunately Master Kwak ruins everything. Negative stars was not an option, so hopefully this review will suffice in showing my absolute displeasure with KAT. There are a lot of good and reputable Taekwondo and Karate studios out there, but unfortunately KAT right now is not one of them.

Show me the money!! should be the name of these KAT schools.the teaching in this school is below any martial art standard.soo many black belt kids who dont know how to throw a simple kick or punch. The owner Grand Master kwak is available only to collect money and push for test applications. He has soo much to offer but you cant get him to do it.he has black belt kids most of the time teaching others while he is on the phone checking on his other biz. (blind leading the blind).its a shame and a scam. the fees are crazy when u count the tests every other month plus an imaginary fee to get ur black belt. and guess what?! people pay just to say our kids have a black belt! get ur kids some fresh air in the outdoors and save ur self thousands of dollars.
