My son has multiple disabilities that keeps him from playing team sports. We researched martial arts to find him a good outlet for fun and physical exercise and discovered Talamantez Karate. I was very pleased to see how well they treated my son even though he was different than the average child. Their focus on self-confidence and leadership was a bonus that I hadnt expected, but love about this school. They give the children homework which is just simple exercises to do at home to continue to build up strength. Anyone who has done a physical skill like this knows that forming such good life habits pays off into adulthood even if you dont keep with it forever. There was an up front fee, but over all, the expense is not much more than any other lessons I have done in my life (music, dance, or whatever). The classes are mixed ages and somewhat mixed skill level, but I like this because the children are taught to accept each other as they are while all striving to continue to improve. We have not been at the school for very long, but I do feel like some of the negative reviews here are a little unfair. I suggest you choose a Karate school that matches your priorities rather than expecting the school to change into what you want it to be. Competition and aggressive martial arts is a fine priority for some people, but I like this school because it focuses on life long skills of character, fitness, goal-setting, and confidence. Also, if you are concerned about prices and fees, asked about it to begin with. I did not get the impression that they were keeping any secrets. Everyone is friendly and happy to help you.

Waited 15 minutes in the hot sun until someone finally showed up. The intro was 10 minutes at the most. I spend more time saying no to the pushy sales tactics. This place seems to be run very unprofessionally. The place could use some upkeep as well. Would not recommend.

Highly recommend! Great for the entire family. This is both of my boys first time to take karate lessons and they have been going for 2 months now. The instructors are positive and the structure of the boys learning has been beneficial both physically and mentally. All while they are having fun in a supportive and encouraging environment.I have also been participating in the Muay Thai class which is a fantastic workout with a great group! Again, highly recommend.

My wife and I have been going here for three years now. They are very flexible with her military obligations and take time to show her what she has missed once she gets back from them. She was able to pull herself out of a deep depression by means of karate and with the help of wonderful instructors. We really feel like we are a part of their family. I am happy to see my wife has found something she loves.

What started out as self defense training for myself and 17 year old daughter is now four of my family members going to Talamantez Karate for self defense, karate and black belt club. We really like the instructors and the family and encouraging but challenging environment. It is a great place to learn self defense, karate forms and have some fun. Its a workout but the result is losing weight and get all the health benefits of focused exercise. Ive lost 30 pounds! Doesnt matter your age or ability or fitness level, everyone is welcome. I didnt know anything about self defense or karate before I started. Youre there to learn and Master Talamantez will be patient and challenge you to improve. Our family really loves it!

My son has recently started classes here and he loves it. That alone makes it worth the money. I appreciate that the instructors also work on life skills and character qualities including respect, responsibility, and self control. I also appreciate that they are upfront about no outside tournaments. I know some people prefer the competition, but this arrangement suits my sons temperament and our family priorities at this time.

AVOID at all costs!!!! If I could give this place 0 stars I would. If you happen to fall victim to the ketchup salesman and his charm thoroughly read your contract and make sure you are provided one before you leave the building. The main instructor Mr. Compos is great and thats all this place has going for it. However, that being said the belts are pretty much worthless if compared to competing studios. This studio finds every way it can to drain money from you each month with extra fees. They promote way to quickly (every other month) as a way to always have extra revenue. The graduation ceremony is a joke every single child that attends gets promoted regardless of how well they did. I wish Id read reviews before committing my family to this awful money grubbing studio. Also the owner is highly inappropriate with his staff he yells at them in front of the children. I seriously cant wait until my contract ends. Never take what the owner says at face value it will cost you in the end. Students that have been physically injured and are told NOT to do karate are still obligated to pay the monthly fee. This is not a family friendly owner.

My five year old is enrolled at Talamantez Family Karate and always has positive experiences. I personally like Talamantez Karate School as its focus is respect, self-discipline and confidence. My daughter is not one to be shy but this school really has given her confidence. She loves to participate ( a little too much) and is never made to feel bad if she does not give the right answer. All the instructors are always positive and always encouraging the children to do their best. My daughter is always excited to attend Karate and leaves with an amazing attitude. I did not want my child to attend outside competitions so this school fit well for us. It has only been a few months for us but she has already learned so much. A huge thank you to all the instructors whom are so helpful and do really care for your childs success. Above all respect, discipline and confidence.

I went to this school looking for peace of mind and I am so glad I had to look no further. My husband joined a half a year after I did and we just enrolled my 4 year old daughter. This is one happy karate family.

This place is all about revenue. You move up in belt rank every 30-40 days and they bill you each time. They have high pressure sales tactics, so they are good at attacking your wallet. At the rate we were going, it seems we could have had black belt within a year....The instructor is nice...(they have only one) They have some assistants, but they dont know how to give instruction. They implemented a black belt club and they mix them with the basic club. They give a higher priority and importance to the black belt club and that just makes your kids feel less important. Also, this black belt club starts class 30 minutes prior to the basic club, so when you get to the basic class, you will not find anywhere to sit down. Also be prepared to sign a 1-2 year contract, which makes no sense for kids who just want to try it out to see if they like it. I made a mistake and should have looked elsewhere.

We stopped in to see what this karate place was like and signed my son up. He absolutely LOVES coming to karate every week. There are 3 classes a week (if you want to attend all 3) and since we are in the black belt club, the classes last almost an hour (with 30 minutes on Saturday). They work HARD. My son has already gotten stronger, both mentally and physically. He practices at home just because he wants to. This is a great program - we can tell the instructors really care about the kids.

This is not a karate school, it is a front to steal from you. I signed up my 5 year old for a modest payment that blew up to a TWO YEAR CONTRACT with extra charges every month. Of course Mr. T will hide all this from you to get you in the class. Dont walk in the door.

Al
Review №26

BEWARE OF THE CONTRACT! There is a contract that will not be mentioned to you upon signing your child up, but will hold you to paying the remainder of your balance if you choose to pull you child out of the program. This is exactly what happened to my husband and I and we were told by Talamantez that this is just how he does business. And the sad part is that even in doing this we saved ourselves money in the end due to hidden costs. Talamantez is always coming up with new and devious ways of “doing business” as he would call it. Where’s the integrity? Kung Jung Mu Sul of Texas, on the other hand, has happier customers and I know this because I’ve now asked around. They will save you big time and for the same! damn! thing! These places are all roughly the same, but Talamantez actually believes he is offering something better than the rest when in reality, he is just charging more for it.

About a year ago, I began looking for a Christmas gift for my 12 year old grandson. It had to be something really meaningful and different. I thought it should help him learn as well as have fun, something that would last, and not wear out. Well I finally found that perfect gift. KARATE LESSONS! Yes that was it!I soon found out it was not going to be an easy task to find the right program. I went from one place to another but nothing seemed to be what I was looking for. He didnt need a program to just learn street fighting, in fact I wanted to encourage him to find friends, to learn confidence in himself, to have respect for himself as well as others. He needed to understand karate was more than street fighting. I hoped he would learn how to interact with people and how to have self control and how to set goals in life.Talamantez Karate was the next stop on my list. As I went in, there was a class in progress. I watched and saw how the instructor worked with the class and how they responded to him. There was a feeling of great respect between the students and the teacher that I did not find in any of the other places. I was greeted by a very pleasant instructor and as we began to talk about the program, I was delighted to know this was the place where my grandson could learn and grow to be a wonderful young man of character and good standards and values. This past year, I have watched my grandson develop that confidence he just didnt seem to have. He is confident as he interacts with people. When in new situations, he is more comfortable and is learning he can do things that he never thought was possible. His physical activity in the class has carried over to him practicing at home and he is developing muscles and control both of his body as well as his mind. His attitude has changed from being afraid in crowds to knowing and feeling happier in all situations. Even his posture is a little taller and more straight.Talamantez Karate program is much more than I ever expected to find. Its more like our extended family that cares about each student not just when they come to class but how students are growing and progressing in life. They want to know their students are doing well at home in their family situations as well as in school and social activities. Each instructor wants their students to be successful leaders with good standards and values. They expect great things from their students and the students know and feel they are valued as great individuals. I thank everyone at Talamantez Karate for their dedication and care for my grandson and our family. Thanks from a grandma who cares,Linda Pallay

Run, dont walk away from these people. Dishonest doesnt even begin to describe their business practices. They advance students to the next level very quickly, not because the student has earned it, but because the dojo makes money. Theyll have you buy a bunch of equipment - - FROM THEM, of course, no outside equipment allowed- - and youll rarely if ever use. Theyll tell you what you want to hear and stroke your ego and flat out lie just to get you to sign up. Dont sign ANYTHING or youre into them for 3 years. If I could leave fewer than 1 star I would.

Buyer beware! Do not sign anything in this establishment! They operate though convoluted and contradictory contracts. I was part of the Talanantez family for a year and after my time was served and my contract ended they have continued to charge me for classes not attended. Theirs are poor and unethical business practices. When they explained to me that I had been tricked, I was told that I should have had my lawyer look over the contract before I signed it. I recommend that if you dont have a lawyer on retainer to comb over a contract to put your child into a karate class then I strongly recommend that you go elsewhere.Dont take my word for it. Read all the reviews before you sign on the dotted line!

My 14 yr old is more focused and comes home anxious to practice his karate instead of playing fornite. I have noticed a big change in their explosive attitude that most children with ADHD have. Their learning to cope through the skills, learning to respect themselves as well as others.

Talamantez Karate is a great place to train at for people of all ages. All of their classes (karate, muay thai kickboxing, and self-defense) provide great workouts and valuable lessons. Aside from the classes, the instructors are patient, always willing to help, and great with kids. I highly recommend it.

Review №36

I have been attending Talamantez Karate for about a month, and here is my honest review. This place, is EXACTLY what you make of it. When the sensei is teaching the young kids class, it is definitely not heavy on “movie karate”.... it is centered on self-awareness, self-respect, cardio, fun, and with real karate lessons mixed in. He asks the kids about school, routinely, seems to genuinely enjoy the company of youth, and he DEFINITELY caters to the audience he has. For example: with the more experienced/dedicated/older classes, there is much more of a martial arts centered class experience, teaching much more actual karate techniques and lessons of self discipline. It is not the same class as the beginner/child class. I find this refreshing. I go twice a week with my 11 year old daughter, and one class is centered around the youth (much more for her) and the other, with older more experienced students on Saturday is a much more mature, discipled class. (Which she also attends and learns more intricate lessons).I’m 35, and am not doing this to do crazy hilarious spin kicks that will never work. I spent 7 years in the military (and actually find here, quite a few techniques I’ve already learned) and don’t plan on van damming anybody in real life. I am doing this to teach my daughter about self awareness/respect/discipline and dedication. I also wanted to learn a martial art that was focused more on lifestyle as a whole. I want my daughter to be able to defend herself, be confident, be aware, and be happy. I want to share this with her, as well as learn a genuine martial art. That’s why this place gets 5 stars. If you’re looking for a place to teach you how to kick real high and look pretty, this isn’t for you. If you’re actually looking to learn about true karate, even as an adult, this place is EXACTLY what you’re looking for.

This place is a scam will pressure you into contract and then push into purchasing expensive equipment if you do not have the equipment you are not given instructions. Very high pressure sales tactics and very low quality karate instructions. No basic understanding karate. Have had several friends scammed out of thousands of dollars. This school does not compete ouside tournaments due to the fact they students would lose. They push you through the ranks with out a good foundation understanding of techniques. Each time you get promoted more money then they push you into getting into a elite program that cost more. Do not join this club or any club that requires a contract.

This school will take you for a lot of money do not fall for the high pressure sales tactics. I understand a business wanting to make a profit but the quality of instructions is very poor. They promote everyone every two months regardless if they have a good understanding of the fundamentals. This is a way to get money out of you. They will also have high pressure sales on equipment if you do not purchase you are made to stand aside while the other students are instructed. The equipment is only used once or twice then they move on to another scam to make money off of you. They also have an elite program that you pushed into joining that cost more money. The instruction is no better in the regular class than the other except that they get more time. One more thing i personally went up to rank of Black belt in less than a year left the school and learned real quick the belt came with no knowledge of true karate techniques. Entered my first tournament in new dojo as a white belt thinking i could clean up and was shocked to learn what a proper taught student can do. After several years and moved back up with as a proper black belt and entered several tournament and hold 1st and 2nd place winning in state championships. Can say that in order to learn properly there is no short cuts to a black belt. Talamantez black belts are worthless.
