My child has been coming here for just a couple months, and he is already starting to read! Teachers are patient and flexible. They adjust the curriculum if the pace is too fast or slow for the student. Keeps you disciplined since homework is assigned daily. Would recommend!

Both of my kids go to Kumon Wes Portal. My older one has been going for about two years. She is an avid reader now and reads at least one grade level (if not more) above her grade. She reads really fast.I really appreciate getting an email from Kumon with suggestions how she can improve even more, which is what we are doing now.Our younger one started about six months ago and I can see him recognizing words already. The system takes time and I did doubt it but now, I am a believer!

I like Kumons service, very systematic and organized. Staff and tutors are super friendly and helpful. I only suggest that they have more instructors in the main classroom so students wont wait for too long after raising hands for help.

I am grateful that I sent my son to Kumon at early age to Kumon Math! Kumon Math gives my son countless Math practices! “Practice makes Perfect” is simply a fact here. I never see my son struggle with his Math homework at school. I especially love Kumon Math West Portal because Tony and his team are approachable, attentive and patient to kids. Thanks, Tony and team!

My son enrolled in Kumon in October this year, he has been taking Reading class for about a month. The class schedule works perfect for me and my son, since it’s after school time and I can send him during my free time. After he started reading here, I noticed that he is more into reading at home. He used to be reluctant to open a book but now he is intrigued and willing to read more. In the past, he will skip long complicated vocabulary which he couldn’t understand, right now after the help from Kumon’s tutor, he will spend time to figure out the meaning and conquer those difficulties. Thanks to the patient tutors and staff at the front desk,my son’s reading comprehension skill improved a lot. I am not a native English speaker but the staff at he front desk can translate everything into Mandarin so I can communicate better with the tutor and instructor for my needs. Highly recommend to all parents and children!

Our children took classes for the past 4 years at the Kumon Center in West Portal. The daily homework definitely helped them to feel comfortable with solving math problems on their own. Teacher Tony is a wonderful instructor who could provide great advice to students and parents.

It’s been almost two years since my 7 years old daughter attending kumon at West Portal. It’s a very quiet place and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The center hours and days are very convenient. My doughter started with math and reading .she improved very quickly in both subjects. And for me the most important thing she learned beside math and reading is responsibility. She was very active and got distracted easily. She had incompleted works most of the time, but later on she develope the habit of doing her homework completely and finish it on time without any distractions.Yes I recommend this place to a friend.!

This center is absolutely disgusting. The worst environment for children to learn in.The average age for the instructors who work there is 18 (the youngest employee being only 16, and the oldest student being 15 years old). As someone who briefly worked at this center, I can personally tell you some heartbreaking stories about exchanges I have witnessed between students and instructors at this center.I have seen multiple employees threaten children as a tactic to get them to complete their work, telling children they will have to stay there all night if they dont finish or that their instructors will be mad if their homework isnt finished the next time they come in.The children at the center are only allowed to ask a total of 3 questions during their 30-60 minute session before they are ignored and told not to ask any more questions. When I asked one employee why we dont let children ask as many questions as they need, his response was It forces them to figure it out on their own, or just waste time. Clearly the goals of this center are not to help children learn.I also witnessed one instructor blatantly lie to a 5 year old girl during a one-on-one session by telling her that he is a Doctor (which was not true, he had only just started college), and as the owner of the center, Tony Vo, walked by and heard the exchange, the young instructor asked Tony to confirm to this little girl that he is a doctor and all Tony did was smile and walk away. The classroom helpers, who are suppose to be available for questions and help the students with their work, dont have enough math skills to help these children. One instructor had to go and ask another instructor how to do an algebra problem so that he could go help the student who had a question on it.This new bathroom rule is what really made me sick to my stomach, especially when I expressed my concern about the dangers of making children hold it to the owner, Tony Vo, and he refused to change it still. His reasoning for this was that some of the students have been caught flushing their work papers down the toilet, which then leads to it clogging up, so in order to prevent a clog all the children are being punished by not being allowed bathroom access until all their work has been completed. Sure, they have a chance to use the bathroom at the start of class, but if they start their classwork and then 5-10 minutes in they need to use the bathroom they are not allowed and forced to hold it.I have even witnessed some children doing the pee dance shaking their legs and rocking in their chairs as they try and ignore their bladders filling up and try and focus of their work. I wont go into the specific dangers of making children hold back their urine, but I will say that it is very unhealthy and can lead to multiple health issues. This issue can easily be eradicated by simply keeping a closer eye on the students, but instead the lazy owner Tony Vo decided to blame the children for this and make them all suffer. The meetings we had were never helpful in terms of learning how to better interact with the students. Tony Vo also drank beer during meetings, and he often gave beer to his underage employees. Although I did not work at this center long enough to participate in any outside work events (sometimes they go camping), I did hear from some of the employees that it is common for Tony to bring alcohol to these events, even though most of the employees are underage, and again the youngest employee is only 16 years old. I only worked for Kumon for a couple months before I couldnt stand by their decisions anymore and quit. I refuse to commit child abuse, and that is exactly what is going on at this Kumon center. These children are being belittled, intimidated, and overall controlled. Any parent who cares about the welfare and safety of their childrens development should stay clear of this place. Children deserve the utmost respect and patience from adults, especially while they are learning new skills, and they are not being respected at Kumon West Portal.
