Review №1

The idea of the summer program is really good. Many topics are very interesting and are those that not normally exposed to middle school students. This is our first year attending Summer Stretch program. We have heard good things about the program in the past and both my kid and myself were looking forward to it a LOT. Living on the eastside, its not easy to take Metro all the way to Seattle and back. The start was pretty well, the instructor looked confident and prepared. He even included pronouns in introduction.Little did we know what we were getting into. The instructor of the program apparently lacked training and experience dealing with a roomful of teenagers. To be fair, he himself is just a master student. Out of no reason, some kids were picked on and put down and things start to build up. Maybe there was a weird sense of humor, but some of the remarks were over the line. When things were more than the instructor could handle, he involved the program management and director of the program. The type of language and tone used by the director (with the presence of principal and teaching assistant) to the students was appalling. There was ridicule, sarcasm and name calling. when parents reached out to the center, there was no interest in getting down to the bottom of incidents that involved students integrity and spirit. When asked how discipline is handled, the answer was 10 minute of talk with me. Students were sent to walk to the principals office across campus with an intention to stay there for more than 1.5 hours out of unfounded hearsay. The management apparently was under stress, as many times the fact there are more than 800 students, many with behavior issues was mentioned when all parents need is to understand how normal teenagers going to a summer camp would end up in principals office.Im glad this is just a 4 week summer camp that had a quick ending. But I feel compelled to write this review so the center would hopefully look into more training into management staff and instructors. More than academic learnings, we as parents look for more basic things towards young students such as compassion, tolerance and more importantly good examples students would follow.I hope more training is available that staff is more prepared to handle middle-school age students. This was a facebook review. However, the center since took out the entire review section, which looks very much like a cover-up.
