Class of 2014 here. I thoroughly enjoyed my four years at UA. I was a short-distance commuter student from Highland Square, but still got a totally “normal” college experience. I had a good group of friends, a solid professional network (to this day), helpful professors, and attended a lot of fun campus events/parties/athletics. For an urban area, the campus is gorgeous and the facilities are relatively new (union, football stadium, wellness center etc.).I graduated on a Saturday and started a high paying job in my field that next Monday. Does it get much better than that? Not if you’re like most of us and going to school to get a job. If that is my measure of my time at Akron, then it was perfect. It was only after graduating that I realized how much my program was recognized nationally for its quality and outcomes. My only complaints were the weather and city; two things of which UA has no control over. The city of Akron is objectively not that nice of the place (look up those reviews), nor is it an easy area to start a good career. Most of the city is dilapidated, low socioeconomic status, dangerous, trashy, heroin-ridden, and lacking opportunity. I was not from Akron, so this was a bit depressing for me. If you’re from NEOH, you’re probably used to this and it won’t effect you. That said, UA is a diamond in the rough in this town. I am male, but I never felt unsafe on the actual campus. Everything around campus is a different story. Be diligent anywhere south of Exchange St.A lot of negative reviews I see on here are from people who needed more hand-holding through the admissions and financial aid processes. NEWS FLASH: Financial aid sucks at every university in the US. It is a federal program and the process is the same everywhere you go. Most financial aid coordinators are paid like $12-$15 an hour, and that is also universal. You need to adjust your expectations for that process or vote for different politicians. I don’t know what else to tell you.All together, I’d recommend UA to most people depending on your field. It’s certainly way better than that other school down I-76 ;)Go Zips!

Its a nice building on the outside and has an amphitheater hidden behind it, but they layout on the inside of the building is confusing at best. Im not really a fan of having to navigate the upper floors for classes, as there is only one hallway at one end that connects all the other hallways. It wasnt good planning for any reason, least of all social distancing. Forget standing 6 feet from anyone, the hallways are too narrow.

According to the Business Insider, the University of Akron is considered one of the world’s most renowned Institutions in the field of New Materials and Polymers, and has some of the brightest researchers. Pursuing graduate studies at the University of Akron was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. I was fortunate to receive financial support from the University in the form of a graduate teaching assistantship, and was responsible for teaching Chemistry laboratories and courses to undergraduate students. I also served as a Chemistry lecturer to nursing students at the University. I spent 9 semesters as a graduate student and received my PhD in Chemistry. I will cherish forever the memories of the years I spent at the University of Akron.

The University of Akron is the only public university in Ohio with science and engineering courses among the top five public universities in the US News & World Report magazine. The University of Akron started as a small college attached to the body of God and a universal school. In 1913 the University of Akron was transferred to the City of Akron for financial reasons. The University of Akron became a state university in 1967. The University of Akron consists of the Butcher College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business and Management, the School of Education, the School of Engineering, the School of Art, the School of Law, the School of Nursing, the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, the Honor College, University College, Wayne College, and the University of Saskatchewan. They (advisers) expect NEW students to know what type of questions to ask, rather informing them, because you know... its not like its their JOB, they give attitude, and almost make you feel like your an inconvenience for asking IMPORTANT questions. They dont give you examples on how to properly schedule the classes you NEED for the semester, youre all on your own. I would not recommend anyone to attend this university, save your time, and attend ANY other Ohio college, for a better overall experience, and GUIDANCE.

This is not a typical college and it is not for everyone. Like anywhere some programs are better than others; make sure you do your research. The challenge of Akron is also one of its assets, no one is going to hold your hand. Many people expect Akron to be a easy school and many programs at Akron are hard. Like the real world, nobody is going to do your work for you. I have had hiring managers tell me that they respect this about Akron alumni. They know that Akron graduates needed to motivate themselves to graduate. If you need extra attention from your professors and want a small community experience, this is not for you. If you want a respected diploma, at a (relatively) low cost, and need flexibility with class schedules, Akron may be for you.

This campus is one of the most unsafe I have had the displeasure of being on, I have lived here for 2 years now and there have been numerous break-ins a few violent disputes that Firearms have been involved with and the campus is scattered in a shotgun formation so that walking to class can take up to 25 minutes even if you live in the dorms. They have a nice gym thats about the only good thing I can say about the University of Akron, horrible School horrible town and horrible people, I would not recommend going here the price is not worth what you pay for.

The educational experience was fine, even exceptional at times! However, Ive had to personally fight back overcharges to my tuition every semester. In addition, while I admire their dedication on staying open to serve their students, recently theyve shown blatant disregard for their commuters and safety in times of inclement weather. Further, they see fit to insult the responding concerns of these adults they claim to serve. In all, while I will finish my degree at this University, their condescending responses to student issues in addition to some recent changes to the course structure may prevent me from recommending this University to others in the future.

Akron gets a bad rap and a lot of people talk bad about it but it is a better school than its reputation would lead you to believe. First, the majority of people who blame the school for their lack of success are lazy. It is a lot easier to blame the institution for your lack of learning instead of studying and being accountable for your own success. Just like anything in life, you get out what you put in. I spent 4 years on this campus; at the union, in the dorms, classroom halls, the library and rec. The union and rec are gorgeous but the library could use some TLC. Overall, the facilities are great and the majority of the teachers do care and will go the extra mile. But, then again I had teachers who could care less. My adviser was also horrid and I sensed that she truly did not want me to succeed which is definitely a negative. But, I made it into the Doctorate of Physical Therapy program at Mount Union thanks to my education here. Akron is a good school and a good value. GO ZIPS!!!

MacDonalds of Education. Im finishing up a year teaching here. A lot of students (see reviews below) came for fun times, not education -- and it shows. The administration is of the mindset bigger is better. The failure rate is huge. Class sizes are often enormous, ensuring that instructors cant help the students. Instead, they are helped by other students. Many students take classes which are designed for general education and count it towards their major. This is not a quality educational institution. Academically, Id rate it at the bottom of seven schools I taught at.

Unfortunately, I had the same experience as Meredith, with the same result. I havent attended classes for several years here, yet I received a $500 charge for a class I never took. After speaking with them on the phone, I was told to fill out a form to have the charges reversed. I sent in the form, and did not receive a response from the university, but instead received a collections notice for the fee.Regardless of this issue, if you are looking for a university in the same general area, Kent State offers a better campus, with more things to do in the area, along with a more helpful staff in my experience.

The University of Akron has some aspects that are commendable and others that are in desperate need of change:Positives:There are some brilliant professors teaching here that really want to see their students ameliorate and flourish. The Polymer Science building and the engineering research has kept Akron relevant and innovative.Negatives: The PARKING situation needs to be improved. I speak for a great deal of students who think that the new football stadium was wasteful and should not have been created; a parking deck would have made much more sense. The university is also located downtown and near some sketchy areas. There is a fair amount of homeless individuals (some with mental illness) near or on the campus. There is some crime which usually includes robbery. What saddens me is that many of the cheap, dilapidated apartments that they offer off-campus students are usually targets because they are near the hood. I would never live in the majority of the off-campus housing because it is far too dangerous. I commuted and also lived in a dorm (until it became to expensive).Academically, there were some challenging courses but I like work that is applicable. All the electives and rudimentary work could be replaced with CORE work to get people graduating and into their work lives. I could speak on and on about the ways in which this university could be improved. However, I am glad I was able to get an education at all and am looking forward to going to graduate school elsewhere.

There is so much wrong with this university and its incredibly saddening to see what the school has become during the course of my time there. High turnover of faculty, administration that mishandles finances without thinking about what difficulties their binge spending and money shuffling will create for students, cuts to programs and scholarship money drying up as the population of the city goes down and people start to realize what kind of school UA actually is...considering financial aid, you better either be rich enough to pay all of your tuition in cash or be prepared to be in debt over your head when you get out because this school is incredibly stingy when it comes to providing adequate aid. Programs keep changing and the university is doing whatever they can to keep students from graduating on time so they can suck as much money out of them as possible to keep the school from going bankrupt. How about taking all of the money youre using to build new buildings that arent needed on funding your programs, filling the financial gaps that are bringing the school down and actually fund more than one search for quality faculty to replace staff who have left instead of hiring the first person that puts in an application?

Informed this to the many academic councilors that I had spoken with and all of them stated yes that the University could accommodate me but they can’t tell me which classes are offered at what time until I speak with a scheduling councilor. I don’t mind the payment to apply but then they also make you pay for orientation. So I attend orientation and it’s supposed to last for majority of the day, I meet with the councilor and he proceeds to tell me he can enroll me in 1 class and that maybe I should go part time because ALL of the rest of my classes are during the day.....I immediately leave and ask for a refund and they have been dodging me ever since. I have gone to the university of akron for 4 years now. Im not gonna lie I have had multiple issues with the school itself. I was not a direct admit to the college of engineering and was given a general academic advisor at Simmons hall. All of them have absolutely no idea what they are doing. My advisor told me to take certain courses during a particular semester and because of his advise it added another year onto my major. With that said I love the biomedical engineering program that akron offers. All of the professors are super nice and are perfectly willing to help with whatever you need.Akron is one of those schools that, depending on your department, will alter your experience here. Akron is also a school that has little to no social activities. This isnt really a big deal to me but if you are looking for the college experience your probably not gonna get it at Akron. Akron is focused more on its academics and prides itself on engineering. Akron also has a difficult engineering curriculum if there are any potential engineering majors reading this.

I regularly felt that professors cared little to not at all about their instruction quality or about students success in general. The security was terrible as well. There were a total of 3 rapists on campus during my freshman year. All we were given, were whistles to blow in case something happened. The school is a good school but getting into the school was the hard part. I worked with financial aid for 2 months trying to get all the paperwork they needed to administer my aid and the 2nd week of school my classes were dropped. I tried to explain the situation to the bursar office since they were the ones who dropped my classes but the office was extremely rude to me and would not help me what so ever.I ended up having to run to all of my professors to get signatures from them to get my classes back and ended up losing my chemistry lab class because someone took my spot before I could resolve the issue. This was absolutely frustrating! So now my schedule is messed up because I have to take the lab before I can sign up for Chem 2 which they do not offer in the fall and therefore I am also trying to scramble to fill my schedule with enough credits to be full time so my aid will not be dropped. I almost dropped out of the school because no one but financial aid would help me and I ended up getting zeros on quizzes from my classes because I was trying to resolve the issue and did not make it to class, which has hindered me from getting an A in my calculus class. If youre a transfer student I would be careful because you might have to jump through many hoops to be able to come here, and that still might not be enough.

Unless you are an accountant, do not expect any support from the internship and career services. Majority of the management and finance professors who’s salary I have had the pleasure of subsidizing, have no real world contacts who actively scout students. This means at the end of the day, YOU are responsible to present yourself to future employers with absolutely no leverage or rapport over anyone random off the street, and this shows. The CBA website boasts quotes such as “95% graduate placement rate” and “hard work is success”, but in all reality, over HALF of my graduating class (finance) are unemployed or underemployed (minimum wage job, job out of field of study, job does not require college education). All of those peers are 3.5 GPA and above.I will be taking the GMAT and applying to graduate school in 6 months, but I will NOT be applying to The University of Akron’s MBA program. For those currently enrolled, I wish you luck.

They dont pay their adjunct teachers a living wage. The money goes for sports and fancy buildings.

Predatory parking fines and penalties assessed to students of limited financial means is certainly an alternative revenue source used to make up for budget shortfalls. But is it ethical.
