Great fighting techniques, however my daughter was discouraged from using her inhaler during practice. We later found out her asthma is pretty severe, so it’s scary to look back knowing she was told that she was strong and didn’t need to use it while working out here. Kids also can’t drink water during a work out. Also not sure if things have been updated, but during the summer, there was no air conditioning on for the kids. Fans were on, but that was it. Also, just like another post mentioned, my daughter came here for two years, and only the kids knew her name. ): She just got used to responding to another name because she was too intimidated to correct the adults of what her name really was.

A great family to join!I started going here from the age of three (1998). I continued all the way until about 2014. I have recently started again and was welcomed back with open arms. There are three main reasons I recommend this school over any other school. Practicality, Authenticity, and Personal Growth! This school teaches Kajukembo. A mixture of martial arts that has been perfected and modified to flow with each other to create the most effective and practical art available. Everything learned here has a purpose in creating a student ready for any situation one may face on the streets. The art has been tested and perfected with this preparation in mind.Great Grand Master Melcor Chavez learned from one of the original students (Al Decascos) of one of the creators (Adriano Emperado). This has provided GGM Melcor Chavez with a clear understanding of the art, its origins and its purpose. As a 10th degree black belt he is also one of the highest ranked black belts in this system. Teaching since acquiring his black belt in 1973.The personal growth I have experienced here is something I could not appreciate more. Of course there is the discipline one would expect in a martial arts school. However, it doesnt stop there. Other key teachings would be teamwork, self motivation, safety mindset, then manners and respect. In the society we live in now, I feel that these qualities instilled in me has allowed me to standout in many career opportunities as well as improve my overall character.Everyone at Chavez Martial Arts Academy is seen as family. I wouldnt be who I am if it wasnt for them. I hope you give this school a try and maybe I will get to meet you someday.

My three children and myself are enrolled. Each child started at age 3. Grandmaster does an amazing job shifting gears to work with very young kids, teenagers and older adults to craft the experience based on the capacities and needs of each individual. This is definitely rigorous training but the payoff for our children and for myself is awesome. This level of training is not for the light of heart. In response to the one negative rating from a year ago, it is true that parents of young children are not allowed to be in the dojo during most of the training time. It seems quite clear that children do better when parents arent helicoptering and the children have to be accountable and focused. We love the fact that other older children help teach our children and look forward to when our children have that responsibility. This is like Montessori karate in that way. We hope that Grandmaster and his great family keep this place going for many decades to come.

Love this place! Learned so much, and its a very tough workout, but its so rewarding after a hard workout! You have to be commited to succeed. The instructors are awesome! They are firm, but caring group of individuals. Chavez dojo is a fun and exciting place to learn martial arts!

Probably the best thing I have ever done for my son. He has been there for almost 2 years and is learning things that he will carry on for the rest of his life. I am so thankful to have this school for both of my sons.

This place is awful. My son went here for almost two months and the instructors didnt even know his name. We werent allowed to watch him in class which was a little bothersome (hes only 6) but we gave it a shot. He went 3 days a week and each time we waited patiently outside in the car while he was in class. He soon Started coming home saying his instructors and other kids were mean to him and said hurtful things. From what we saw the instructors are rude, ill tempered, degrading and disrespectful. We also found out that the instructors were having other students often 10-14 years old train the younger kids in class. There were over 40 kids in my sons class and theyre having trouble keeping up with that many students. My son told us one night that he told a kid teaching him that he was out of breath during a training session. That kid told my son if you couldnt breathe youd be dead. After several bad experiences and for the safety of my son we decided this place wasnt for us. We were also constantly being haggled to buy longer contracts for classes, fight gear, gis and tshirts, of course only gear bought and sold exclusively by the dojo could be used. We were lied to when we first signed up about making sure my son enjoyed the classes before any of that was needed. Soon after we signed up the grandmaster was calling us out in front of all the other students and parents because we hadnt bought a gi or fight gear after only a few weeks. The sad thing is my son was really excited to start karate and after a few weeks at this place hes never asked to go back. Good riddance.
