Our youngest daughter Elizabeth goes here. We were very impressed with NEXGEN when our oldest daughter came here, we love how the facilitators treat each kid as an adult getting ready for the real world. Every time I’ve needed answers the staff gets back to me right away.

Ive been teaching at nex+Gen for a few years now and cant say enough about how amazing it is! Its full of skilled educators with personal investments in all students success who have mindsets of always improving in their practice. When the number one comment overheard from teacher to teacher is, I wish I could take your class! you know we foster a positive culture of excitement, rigor, high engagement, and collaboration that spreads to our students. Working here continues to push me to redefine my philosophy of teaching to be more student-centered and focus on student ownership of learning and choices.I love teaching here, and if I had kids of my own would love for them to go here!

My family has been a part of nex+Gen Academy for 6 years. Both of my children have gone through all 4 years. This school is nothing short of amazing. The staff is fantastic, their curriculum is top notch and what they have done for my children has been amazing. It is a Project Based Learning environment.

I work here and my son graduated in 2014. This is a quality school that offers a private education without the high cost. Motivated students who learn to work as teams achieve to high levels. As a graduate of the Albuquerque Academy, I believe it has all the hallmarks of a great school! The facilities are amazing and seem brand new after six years. The focus is Academics, there are not extensive athletic facilities, good health is important. An amazing alternative to the larger schools and a staff that believes in seeing kids do amazing things! Check it out!

Three of my siblings, two cousins, and a friends daughter have gone to this school. The culture and work ethic are great, there are no doors on the classrooms and they have cubbies instead of lockers to promote a trusting atmosphere. They do take theft and cringe very seriously, but every student has to write an essay to be accepted in detailing why they want to go there. The school rents the students laptops for the year and every class teaches through the most up to date computer programs. I highly recommend this school and with I couldve gone there!

My son absolutely loves this school. He is learning to think critically and engage socially in meaningful ways. At 15 he has a clear path toward a career of his choosing that he feels supported in pursuing. The school has offered numerous opportunities for him to grow and develop as a person. We greatly value the instructors and overall philosophy of this school and their ongoing support and encouragement of their students to become contributing adults in their community.

Great school with teachers who truly care about each and every student. My son attended Nex+Gen since 9th grade and graduated last year. Would send him there again if we had to do it all over again.

Our eldest daughter is graduating 2018/19 (all high school years at Nex+Gen) and our son is a Sophomore - both teens are different people/different students and have excelled in the Nex+Gen Academy environment. I truly believe the project-based learning teaches much more than academics, it is real-life problem solving and team dynamics that will benefit all students for life! I also believe the respectful school culture is one that fosters individual growth, in a mature and supportive environment. Positive celebration of learning from peers AND faculty, our teens had not experienced prior to attending Nex+Gen. I highly recommend this high school.

Wow, there are some recent negative posts on here that totally miss the mark- in fact, if youre a student at Nex+Gen reading those, youd wonder if those folks were ever truly connected to the school. I suspect theres some youthful (or maybe competitive) shenanigans at play there, but dont take my word for it-- visit Nex+Gen for yourself and talk to the students who are actually there. Anyone whos a part of that school knows how special it is. Nex+Gen ROCKS!!!

Nex-gen Academy brings new energy and light to the APS district. This charters cool with project based learning focusing on individual attention is something you cant find at most high schools. My son started at nex-Gen the year they opened and I have 3 other students currently attending. I highly recommend this school. Bonus-every student is issued a laptop to use for school.

If you are considering sending your child to Next-Gen, you need to ask yourself this very important question. To what extent is Next -Gen a pretend school instead of a real high school? According to a November 10th, 2013 article in the Santa Fe New Mexican, “Higher Education Takes Step Back to Basics,” between 21% and 67.5% of GRADUATES from different types of New Mexico high schools starting into University of New Mexico need remedial education. This is alarming because the students going on to universities like UNM should be the best and brightest compared to those high school graduates going to junior colleges or directly into jobs or unemployment. The truth is that it has become public policy for high schools to issue diplomas even to students who have not learned academic basics in order to mask the terrible performance of government schools, administrators, teachers, parents, and students. When my child was starting his second year at Next-Gen, I started to perceive many clues that there were real problems with teaching and standards at this school. More often than not, my child reported he would have no homework to do at night. Although the school flaunts itself as a technology school (apparently because the school issues lap-top computers) no one had taught my child how to touch-type so he is ridiculously hunting and pecking her way through his key-board home-work.Although my child had been taking chemistry for months, he didn’t know the difference between a molecule and an atom. Although he had taken geometry and was taking algebra at the school, he still had problems with more fundamental math problems. Although he had been taking Spanish for four months, he couldn’t even say “I am” in Spanish, nor did he know the difference between a verb and a noun, nor what verb conjugation was. I suspect this is because the Spanish tests are given “open book” so that students don’t actually have to memorize any Spanish to get good grades in Spanish. My child uses an on-line translating device to do his Spanish home-work further immunizing him from potential need to actually learn.Everyone knows how easy it is for students to share homework and cheat if they are all connected via the internet. Apparently the school hasn’t taken appropriate precautions against this. This school system’s emphasis on “project based group learning” further institutionalizes lack of personal responsibility for individual learning. My child often complained that sometimes he had to do graded group projects where he would have to do most of the work for the other lazy members of the group.According to the school teachers, my child is not academically challenged in the least. Rather, even with these huge academic red flags I just mentioned, my child was getting all A’s and B’s and made the honor roll. Of course, that is what made me eventually become very suspicious that this was just one of those schools that give good grades to lull parents and students into a false sense of pride and security that teachers are teaching and students are learning.

My daughter has been at this school and is a Senior. She used to be proud to be a Griffin! She won the Harvard Book award at the end of her Junior year. This award is for the most well-rounded student in their Junior class and determined by staff. My daughter has an IEP and has health problems which have caused her to miss school, but always excused. The head of Special Education has tried to put a BIP into her IEP based on EXCUSED absences.. She also NEVER acquired my permission to do a Functional Behavior Assessment. This is legally required at the very beginning of the BIP process. The lack of ownership for their mistakes amazes me. There is also a 504 that shouldve been recommended instead of the BIP as this wouldve covered my daughter for her absences due to health. Thank God I know people who work at APS in special education or I wouldnt have caught this. What about the parents who dont know what they dont know? Had I not been aware of the policy and procedures, my daughter would have an illegally processed BIP in her IEP. At the last IEP meeting the head of Special Ed said the school wasnt a correspondence school and maybe my daughter would be better off somewhere else...in front of my daughter.

We had to comment because it is easier to rant about something you dislike as opposed to something you are satisfied with.We chose Nex Gen based on their use of technology as a learning tool and the use of team/problem based learning. Universities are slowly moving away from the standard lecture and memorize pedagogy whenever they can and many medical schools, including UNM, are heavily invested in this type of model. Thankfully they do not follow the standardized tests guidelines for their curriculum, but seem to use them as a touchstone and then go beyond what those dumbed down requirements are. The students are not graded solely on output and re-gurgitation of facts, they are also graded on teamwork, participation and the effort they put into their projects, real grades, not simply a pat on the back.Their curriculum spirals, meaning they revisit, reinforce and delve deeper into subjects year after year. They inform you that standardized test scores will be lower the first couple of years but that they will pick up. Our experience matched what they said would happen almost exactly, with lower scores until the end of 10th grade, after which, when daughter met all the state requirements for graduation and excelled above the state average from that point on. One of the worst things you can do to your student if you decide to be a part of Nex Gen is pull them out during their sophomore year. It will appear they are behind their peers at the standard APS schools when in reality they have already been exposed to areas of development that other students will never be exposed to (or tested on).Is this school for everyone? Simply put, no. What kind of student will thrive at Nex Gen? I do not know. It is a commitment and the difference in learning techniques from what we experienced as teen-agers can be a bit unnerving at times. However, we cannot argue with the results, our daughter was accepted to every college she applied to and was accepted to the honors and leadership program in the college she chose. She is in the first class to experience all four years so I imagine the program has been tightened up and is even better now.
