Kyle, Steve and Jeff are so patient and knowledgeable, they really go above and beyond to work with their students. They create a welcoming, fun, and interactive environment. I came in not knowing what to expect with no idea how to ride a motorcycle, and in the course of a weekend, I can successfully ride. I never felt overwhelmed, they always take things step by step in such a fashion that feels natural and safe yet incredibly exciting. However, there are things that you should know before taking their class:1) Bring all your gear on range day, they are completely serious when they say that wont let you ride with any missing gear. They prioritize safety above all else.2) Pay attention to the 3hr online session. The written exam WILL have questions over it. Be SURE to bring proof of completion.3) DO NOT BE LATE. They take this very seriously. Come early, nobody wants their time wasted, students and instructor included.4) Have fun! I came in super nervous, but honestly it all melted away by the experience they were able to create.

Tim was a great coach! He uses sarcastic humor to keep the training going. He is very serious when it comes to rules, but As long as you follow the rules, you should be fine. I believe they have to be strict, because it’s a serious job and some one could get hurt, if people aren’t paying attention!I failed the written test first time😋 cause I was over confident and honestly didn’t prepare for it. Had to pay extra $75.00 and wait a full week to take the three day course again!Tim made sure that we did every routine perfectly. The final assessment was easy. You have to do very bad (loose 15 points) to fail it, so don’t worry and enjoy the training. Bring plenty of fluids!Overall it was a fun experience and I highly recommend total riders!

This is a serious class but he does use humor and tries to make you at ease.I dropped the bike on the evaluation, and owned my mistake. Gene was a fantastic instructor. My only previous experience was about 7 months riding a dirt bike in 2019. As a brand new street bike rider I really appreciated his knowledge and skill to educate and keep students safe. He provided thorough instruction, constructive feedback and lots of good vibes and praise. I truly felt supported and well trained by Gene. The kicker was taking our final Sunday class starting with rain, leading to the motorcycle test being taken in the SNOW. A truly unique experience, with a well thought out course (Total Rider) with an experienced, great teacher! THANKS GENE!

Definitely knows what to do and how to do it. They are working with you, not just teaching a class, they are part of it. They feel the class. Especially, I appreciate both of them trying to accommodate little needs, i.e. Jeff helped a fellow student in a classroom, Tim by changing our positions in a riding part of class little comments and suggestions, etc. Great respect. Great place to take a motorcycle safety course to get your Class M endorsement. The instructors are friendly and knowledgeable, and they make an effort to make the course fun. Those people who are complaining about not getting refunds obviously cant follow directions. I received no fewer than three emails telling me exactly what I needed to bring to class with me on the first day. The fact that people get dropped from the course has to do with the rules the State of Texas requires the course instructors to follow. Dont let a few disgruntled students keep you from taking a course with these folks. So long as you follow instructions and read the emails they send, you will not regret taking a course from Total Rider.

If you have 0 experience or a little experience, this is the course for you. If youre lucky enough or do your due diligence and get Coach Kyle you wont be disappointed. Coach K takes total riders curriculum and makes it super engaging with his theatrics and style of teaching. You pay the guy to basically humble you down, educate you, and push you into being a fundamentally sound rider. I dont think twice about the money I spent because of him and the students I learned in the class with. Mucho Respect, Coach K! And safe riding to whoever sees this and the other reviews in helping them decide to pull the trigger.

I had a terrible experience with this motorcycle school once. I did not have any prior riding experience. Any time I was doing something wrong on a motorcycle, not because I was doing it intentionally but because I had never sat on a motorcycle and operated it in my life before, the instructor was threatening to dismiss me from the class for not following the instructions. I was already uncomfortable since I was learning a new thing, these threats made me even more nervous. I am not sure if its this school/instructors particular way of teaching, but this is not the way it should be!Additionally, this school has a terrible refund/cancellation policy. They can easily dismiss you from the class for whatever reason they can find and make you pay the full price to sign up for the class again.

Yes, the reviews are true that if you are late at all, dont show up with proper gear, dont bring your e-course certificate, fail the knowledge test, etc., then you forfeit your fee and have to repay and retake. They are very clear about this prior to beginning, and the onus is on you to make it happen. In part, it helps prepare you for the seriousness of the course - riding motorcycles is dangerous, so you should approach the course with appropriate gravity. Further, the time commitment for the course is great for participants, but even greater for the instructors. Respecting simple standards of showing up prepared and on time is just being respectful of their time and energy. On to the actual experience: Kyle, our Austin instructor, was incredible. He has clearly been doing this for a long time and has a ton of experience, but it never came off as stale or tired. He strikes a serious tone throughout - never letting the inherent risk slip far from mind - but balances it with a fun and patient atmosphere. He explained everything clearly, never made a question seem silly, gave constant feedback, and gave equal attention to each student. Importantly, as a woman with zero motorcycle experience, he treated me exactly the same as others and without any hint of condescension or impatience.Looking ahead to a weekend of 15+ hours of instruction is daunting and honestly felt unnecessary. On the other side of it, the opposite is true. Each minute of instruction felt totally necessary and valuable, and the time passed easily. I would recommend this course to anyone and recommend Kyle even more highly.

I just finished the weekend course to brush up on skills long since gone rusty in preparation for getting back on two wheels as a weekend pursuit. I dont have any interest in commuting but riding in the Hill Country is something Ive thought about ever since we moved here ten years ago.The safety course wasnt much different from what it was when I took it all those years ago, and it was nice to get back on a motorcycle in a controlled environment. The e-course is new, of course, but that was actually pretty useful and I had no issues with it at all. The classroom portion on Friday night was enjoyable and combined two classes together. Everyone participated and learned what we needed to, and everyone passed the written test. The morning sessions (early start - 7 am) were held on Saturday and Sunday, and our group consisted of six riders of varying skill levels. Kyle, our rider coach, took exactly the right tone to get the points across, direct where necessary but not afraid to lighten the mood when appropriate. It is a testament to his ability to teach skills that everyone in the class passed both portions, and there will soon be five newly-licensed riders out there with at least the basics skills to stay safe. I already had my M certification, but the course was exactly what I needed to boost my confidence and blow some of the rust out of the mental gears.I plan to go back in a few months for advanced level training, as Im a firm believer that you can never have too much training or education. Well done, Total Rider, and especially well done to Kyle.

Seriously it’s a solid three hours. The written test you take on the first day is derived completely from that course. Take your time and study that online class! I took the course and the classroom portion was easy enough but the teacher seemed not to care. Then the next day we went to the driving portion and it was 12:30 in the middle of the hot summer day. the Teacher started us looking at the bike in sun and for about 1.5-2 hours later I started not to feel good and the teacher said that if I leave the course i wouldnt be able to finish. So I was continued until i almost fell over so i sat down and took off my helmet. The teacher told me to get off the course so I did. Then after sitting in the shade a bit the teacher told me I wasnt allowed to finish and i could email the lady in the office. So I did and she said they wouldnt let me retake the bike portion and that i have to pay for it all again. I was upset that they didnt even offer a break. So i called the office to ask for a refund or for another class and the manager was rude and treated me like a child and he said that it doesnt matter if you have a health issue. He also said the course doesnt require breaks. We are in the middle of Texas in the heat of summer in the middle of the day and we didnt get breaks. I would save your money and take a better course with someone else.

Dont listen to the reviews- I just finished my basic course with Jeff and it was an amazing experience. Yes, they have many rules and if you do not follow them you will fail the course (which is likely where a lot of the poor reviews have come from). No, Total Rider does not make those rules- the entire course is created by the DPS. The MANY emails made it very clear what was expected and what needed to be done, and for the few questions I had Mindy was there to answer them. Jeff was a great instructor, and although a large portion of his job consisted of reading verbatim the DPS curriculum, he always explained things in more detail if necessary and was eager to answer any additional questions that I had. He was a really great guy to be around, and he had a ton of entertaining stories to break up some of the monotony. I was worried going into the class after seeing some of the poor reviews, but all in all it was a great experience and I would recommend the program to anyone looking to get into riding.

A motorcycle is so much fun when you know how to ride it safely however a lot can go wrong if you dont know the basics and/or goof off on the road. Also, it doesn’t matter how many years you have under your belt, it’s always a great thing to take a refresher course. TERRIBLE - GO SOMEWHERE ELSE IF YOU WANT TO LEARN HOW TO RIDE!A really big disappointment. I came to classes to learn how to ride a motorcycle, I have zero experience of riding a motorcycle and my expectations were that course help me to build necessary skills. That is was my big mistake. The class was full of people with some experience. The class portion of the training went fine. Coach Tim Shea is a good man, the class portion went fast and interesting. The range part was terrible. Once I lost control because of motorcyle front brake level was too far for me and I accidentally push the throttle. Well, it is OK. I was not sent to the home on the first day. At home, I realized the reason, why I have had issues with control - I dont have a comfortable position on the bike. The next day, I asked to replace the bike or adjust controls, however in response I heard that I should be sent to the home and I signed an agreement that Im OK to use what the school will give me. Later the couch dismissed me with an argument that Im not follow the instructions. Well, it is his opinion and right. However, what I would like to say in my turn. Im an immigrant and I understand English very well, yes I have an accent and it is doesnt mean that I stuped or dont want to follow the instruction, I really want to follow and I tried to hear the couch. The issue that I have zero experience of riding. I can not keep pace as people who have riding experience especially on the bike that isnt comfortable for you.For me important to understand what Im doing and why. The coach just read the exercise steps, without explaining what is the goal, why it is important.Videos from MSF classes that you can find on youtube shows that people do excises on range with good markup. Unfortunately, on the Hutto Range, it is difficult to read markup on the range I even had the idea to come with paint and help to add a markup, because Total Rider doesnt have enough money to refresh range markup. Also, the Couach never mentioned the markup at all!!! My understanding, the standard range markup should help students to navigate during excise.I was dismissed, the Total Rider policy said, that I can not expect a refund. I lost my time, my money, however, I didnt lose a hope to try other classes and coach. I just had the bad luck to meet Total Rider and coach who is good for people with experience but had a lack of will or desire to work with people without riding experience.

When it got to the riding portion, did not receive much instruction. I had never been on a bike before and the rate they were moving the class was too fast for me to really grasp the concept. When I was struggling, instead of being encouraging and providing me tips, the only comments I got from the riding coach was why are you not getting this, you need to pick up the pace or I will remove you from the class. I was getting more instruction and encouragement from another student in the class that had already ridden before than the head riding coach. I dropped the bike once because was off-balance, and instead of helping me up and giving me pointers, he stopped the class and made me look like an idiot point out my mistakes. Erik was the head instructor for this basic riding course, and I would not recommend it. Only take this class if you already know how to ride and just need the credit for a license.

A bad start but non the less I powered through his rude and discouraging comments during the class portion and passed the test.On the course Chet was very aggressive and made the the tests miserable for everyone with his yelling , and god forbid if you had “stupid question”.The course was very disorganized and Chet ran all the exercises in a haphazardly manner. The main thing is I passed but if I could give anyone advice, look elsewhere. Learning to ride a motorcycle is challenging enough and you don’t need all the discouragement from an instructor that is supposed to instill confidence. A motorcycle class should be an enjoyable experience and that is not what Chet and the staff provide over at Total Rider.Hope this helps, best of luck and look elsewhere for a motorcycle class.

Wow...thats all I can say. First day for the classroom portion it took place in a room near a bar. Not just a bar but a bar that was in full swing doing karaoke during the entire class period we got to hear this going on.The instructor Scott made us read the entire PowerPoint and have us answer all the question it was elementary and an absolute joke.Next day was the riding portion as Hurricane Harvey approached. I showed up at 7 AM still pouring rain and the course was not set up. 5 riders showed up.When it came to choosing a bike for everyone. The bikes given were way too large for two of the other riders causing them to struggle through the course. One of the riders kept falling over and Scott basically had a just get over it attitude. The rider eventually had to stop riding for the day and no attempt was made to have them ride a smaller bike. When it came to my bike. It seemed fine at first. However, during the lesson things changed and I insisted that the bike had an issue. Scott again had the same get over it attitude. No matter what I did my bike would stall continuously. He checked it the first time and noticed an issue. However he rode it after checking it and it seemed to be fine again.I was given back the bike. As I rode the issue started again and now the check engine light was on, but Scott insisted that it was just my inability to ride and told me I would not meet the objectives. Finally when it came to demonstrating the last 2 activities he used my bike which he had been avoiding the entire session. And guess what? The bike was chugging and stalling and having a bunch of issues. This time he got me a new bike.It was a great bike, and it was nice to have one that worked. However, the first bike made it so I barely learned anything except how to struggle with a bike. The next riding day, I didnt go. It was still pouring, my shoes were still filled with water from the day before. I honestly couldnt go because Scott was an ineffective instructor and I was not willing to deal with another day of him.The weather was absolutely terrible, the small bikes were being pushed all over the place. They should have rescheduled but their ride rain or shine policy is strict, I get it.I asked to speak with the program manager and its been 4 days and I have had no contact. It took 2 days for Mindy to respond to my first email. This place is not the place to go if you are a true beginner. If you already know how to ride and just need to get the course out of the way for your license then this is the place.Im out $250, and I barely learned a thing. I was offered to redo the course for another $185, but I think Ill take my money else where.

I had to end up retaking the riding part off this course and was put with Brad and his wife. From the time I showed up to this course, the instructor made very witty and smart comments and remarks. He singled me out in group huddles. This was my first time riding with no experience and at one point, on our first task to ride in a straight line and go around the cone...Brad stopped me not even half way, yelling STOP and starting nagging at me. Brad was telling me that i was way too nevous and why am i nervous, and saying I cant ride this way.I explained to him this was my first time and Brad told me right off that this was going to be a problem! I didnt get any encouragement, he was not patient with me on my first try. During the very beginning, finding all the parts on the motorcycle and learning how to get on and off... Brad said to me, that you need to grab the break homegirl. He said this in a very rude racial way. Im an African American women and his comment came off not right. He did not say this to the other female in the class.Brad was very inappropriate and should have address me by my name and not homegirl to be funny. I was offended by this instructor, he was out of line. I definitely would not recommend him. I think its a good idea to go to this course with some riding experience in order to pass. These instructors are horrible and not professional in any way. A formal complaint needs to be done!

I throughly enjoyed my class. Arsenio was a fabulous instructor- I was hesitant to try a motorcycle because I really just wanted the course for my scooter, but was so glad Arsenio encouraged me to give it a go. I had a blast and learned a ton. I feel totally capable of handling my vehicle and have developed a great feel for a bike if I decide to ride in the future. Highly recommend Total Rider and Arsenio in particular!

Just a quick note for those reading only the first sentence of these things, DO NOT BE LATE/TARDY/ABSENT. Also I capitalized a few things for people skimming through. FULL LENGTH REVIEW.TL;DR:A very good course, pretty difficult for new riders but my instructor(s) were patient and very helpful. I feel that I have decent riding ability after this course, though the course does not go above ~25mph. The refund policy is pretty ridiculous/unprofessional.Anyway, a couple other notes before I jump into things:-I would say this course is MODERATELY DIFFICULT FOR NEW RIDERS. (I was one of them...)-I wont review the e-Course, from what I understand its an overhead requirement by the state or something, and not affiliated with them directly.-DO NOT EXPECT SYMPATHY FROM ANY OF THE RIDING INSTRUCTORS. From what Ive gathered, some of them are more patient than others. Base case, they will push the course to finish in the allotted time and if you are lagging behind, it is up to their discretion to have the extra patience for you.-MY EXPERIENCE IS LIMITED TO THE INSTRUCTORS I HAD, and thats what my review describes. Your experience may differ.CLASS PORTION:My instructor was Jeremy, I think. The classroom portion was about what youd expect, showing everyone first-hand their limitations relating to riding, presenting traffic situations, etc. The exercises were very interactive, and I actually found it pretty fun to go through this portion with the people around me. The instructor was patient and had a good sense of humor. THE WRITTEN EXAM IS FAIRLY EASY, pay attention/participate and youll be fine.ROAD PORTION:For the course specifically, I thought it VERY ADEQUATELY COVERS LOW-SPEED MANEUVERING SKILLS. They cover just about everything that youll encounter in everyday traffic driving. I do wish that the course somehow included something with higher speed so that I could get an idea of how terrified Ill be going 40mph along with traffic, however the testing area isnt nearly big enough to handle that. The bikes that they supplied were decent, obviously beat up but all functioned just fine. There were two options, GROMs and olders Kawasaki 125cc Cruisers, I chose the latter and I felt at a decent disadvantage compared to the much lighter and newer GROMs. THE RIDING EXAM IS MODERATELY DIFFICULT, however there is decent wiggle room as far as scoring goes, from what I could tell.As for the instructor, I cant say anything highly enough. I got ARSENIO, and to add to the other reviews on here, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM FOR A RIDING INSTRUCTOR. Honestly, if I was taking the course again, I would specifically ask for him as my instructor. Very patient, very positive and clearly has a passion for teaching people to safely ride a motorcycle and to have a sense of pride for what youre doing. We had a student who was lagging behind, and the instructor, to the best of his ability, attempted to help him keep up with the rest of us, while keeping the course in-time and moving.

I want to share my experience with Total Rider in hopes that it helps others. I have to preface this by saying that I had ZERO experience riding a motorcycle. Im as green as they come, and not to mention that I dont know how to drive a standard car either. Im not sure that knowing how to drive a stick shift helps riding a motorcycle, but Im assuming it does. I was 3 of 7 in my class that failed the riding skills exam. Yes, THREE of 7 failed. Our instructor was tough. He graded us fairly, but there was little room error in the final exam. Throughout the two riding sessions, because it was a larger group and the exercises were timed, we were limited on the number of turns we each got to run through them. The feedback was quick and you had little time to make adjustments. I felt that there were certainly things I could improve on, but I knew that it would come to me with practice over time. So when I learned that one of the students, who I thought was riding very well during our sessions, didnt pass...I was stunned! Most of us were. I still had hope that I would pass because I did ok on my test. But I didnt...and it left me feeling discouraged because I had paid a lot of money to take this course. The instructor did encourage me to re-test because he said hed noticed a vast improvement over the two days. But still, I wasnt sure. How was I going to practice since I didnt own a motorcycle? What if I forgot what I already learned? Not to mention that re-testing would cost another $75 and I was given limited feedback on what I needed to work on in order to pass the test next time. I left feeling deflated, but gave Mindy a call and she scheduled my re-test for four days later. AND this is when everything changed. My friend, who had also failed, and I showed up to re-test and we were greeted by Arsenio (Nio) our Instructor. He was very easy going, and completely understood our concerns about needing to improve in order to get our certificates. In comparison, our initial instructor and Arsenio, they were like night and day. And I feel that it made all the difference in the world. Nio encouraged us, empowered us, and provided very useful feedback to ensure we were grasping how to realistically execute the techniques.Thank you so much, Nio, for being patient and helping us successfully complete the course. I learned so much in the couple of hours I spent in your presence. So for those who may not pass the riding course initially, dont get discouraged. You made the commitment to spend the money to learn to ride, so keep on pushing through. Im not sure if you can request a specific instructor at Total Rider, but I would highly recommend requesting Nio. He will ensure you are empowered and motivated to get you through the exam and on your way to being an educated and skilled motorcycle rider.

I wasted my money and a lot of time, although I have a lot of knowledge as a motorcyclist, I didnt pass the final written exam because I was supposed to take it in Spanish and in the end they didnt have the exam in Spanish, only in English, the problem is that when I asked for information and I explained to them that I understood little English, they told me there was no problem that they had it in Spanish. Advice., Even if you know English, go prepared and with 100% patience and to endure the worst couch 🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️
