Before my ramble, I wanted to state that my skill level is easily novice, but Austin chose his team not only based on their talents, but their ability to teach to all skill levels.ok, review timeI discovered ASFD from following Philip Morley via Instagram. Prior to attending, I only was armed with a limited knowledge of tools and woodworking from my father growing up. I do however have a life goal to be a studio furniture maker. I have some design background, and am able to quickly take the image I see in my head and transfer it to a tangible template. Knowing myself, my learning style, and my need to see progress quickly, I knew I could not just learn by myself. I need to see the technique once and Im usually good to go. Having a teacher present to analyze and give constructive feedback is the other key ingredient needed. Until recent, I had thought about going to a community college to take woodworking classes; not being a fan of prerequisites, I abandoned that idea, hoping maybe I could apprentice with someone. Then I found Austin School of Furniture and Design. The timing was perfect, and with the ability to choose what classes I wanted to take, I felt I could start filling the gaps in my knowledge... and my tool collection :) I have taken the Measuring & Marking class with Philip Morley and the Shaker Bench class with Patrick Brennan, and am utterly impressed at the level of knowledge and experience they have, and the great part is that each instructor is highly skilled in their craft. The toughest part about taking a class at ASFD is finishing it and then choosing the next one to attend!

Love these guys! Corona got my class delayed to the summer- really missing it now. Soon, though!Friendly, patient instructors. Everyone’s very serious about the craft, but in a down-to-earth, wood-nerd kinda way. They’ve set up a really nice workshop with good tools and thoughtful workspace layout. They are currently scaling up, and doing it well. So glad this is part of Austin. These guys know what they’re doing.

I took a Kumiko class here a few weeks ago and it was a great experience. The bench room in the shop was great, a bench, stool and tools per student with good lighting and it was nice and quiet to be able to hear the instructor. The machine room was well equipped and we basically only did a little work on the Saw Stop, but seems like its well fitted for other types of classes. The class was well thought out, well organized and I really enjoyed it. Will definitely be back for more.

I had a great 8 hour course on Kumiko basics taught by Kiem and was, surprisingly, able to make something I was proud to take home.

This is a wonderful opportunity for woodworkers to improve their skills and knowledge base. I have been very impressed by the talent and diversity of the instructors thatare teaching at the school. Ten years ago you had to travel to the east coast to find this level of professional instruction. Kudos to the staff of ASFD for creating this opportunity for woodworkers.

I had really struggled to learn Sketchup through Youtube videos and instructional books. I took both the Sketchup Intro and Intermediate. This learning environment was far better and my skills really improved. I now feel comfortable producing plans and cutlists and really improve my furniture making.

I spent two full days with Patrick and the team learning the basics of joinery and furniture building. I came away feeling confident enough to use these techniques to create some pieces around the house. The speed and flow of the class was perfect and the instructor took time to answer any questions that covered topics outside the current lesson such as home workshop and tool selection. I really enjoyed the second day of the class which was more free-form and allows you to individualize your project and create custom touches and details. Id recommend this class to anyone who has an interest in the craft and wants a firm foundation for future projects. I look forward to any additional classes the school will offer to expand my knowledge and skills.

Austin School of Furniture and Design deserves more than five stars. Ive always wanted to learn woodworking and was really excited courses were being offered in my own neighborhood. Ive taken two classes - The Woodworking Tools class and the Shaker Bench class. The tool class gave me, as a novice, a good understanding of the tools I would be using in the bench class. I had so much fun!!!! The instructors were terrific and totally knowledgeable about their subject and I walked away from both classes with a completed project. The Shaker bench class had a variety of skill level participants and everyones needs were accommodated easily. Highly recommend. BTW I am a woman and 71 years young. Never too late to learn new skills.

ASFD is a great place to start your woodworking hobby or upskill your current techniques. Ive taken a few courses and would recommend them all.Fundamentals of Woodworking w/ Mark Love - Mark made this class accessible for all of the folks in the room who had no woodworking experience, but he also gave people with more experience room to run. This is a GREAT place to start for someone who has little to no exp or is just interested in picking up a new hobby. Itd be a great gift, too.Principles of Design w/ Elizabeth Farrell - This class rocked. I had no background in design and had no idea where to begin. Elizabeth shared a breadth of architecture and design experience with us, that brought theory to practice.Intro to SketchUp - Ive had SketchUp downloaded on my computer for years but always thought it was no intuitive. Davids class changed that, and while Im not a master, Ive been able to design my projects way more easily.Cant recommend this school enough.

I rated Austin School of Furniture and & Design a full 5 Stars. My formal background is in high tech (almost 40 years). Ive done personal home based construction and have been learning to build guitars but I never had any formal classroom instruction on wood, tools, joinery, etc... I really wanted to get this foundation to grow my skill set. I found ASFD via Instagram in early 2019. I took an introductory class in Marquetry followed by a Hand Plane class and I was hooked. I continued classes through the Fundamentals and Furniture 1 courses as well. The instructors were engaging and really interested in our learning experience. The teachers I’ve met are industry recognized, accomplished professionals. Seeing their level of work and how it is applied in the classroom is inspiring. They were each assisted with talented woodworkers from ASFD who really contribute to the classroom experience. I’ve made several friends that tracked through the same classes with me and we still follow each other on social media (students, assistants and instructors). The classroom space at ASFD has continued to grow since my first class. We have access to professional level shop tools – bandsaws, table saws, jointers, etc… The workstations are woodworking benches outfitted with front and tail vises each with their own tool sets and a compliment of hand planes and power tools for the students to use. There is also a good variety of classes to choose from. I’m taking some online classes (Sketch Up) during the current crisis, have a pending Intermediate Marquetry class and look forward to the development of the next furniture class!! 😊

I took Technical Drawing and it was fun and informative! There isnt a school quite like this one in Austin for this particular focus (that I know of), so I was excited when it opened with varied class options. Reasonable ticket price, small class size, and interesting teachers. They are new and open to feedback. I found the class to be pretty accessible to beginners/low intermediate levels, but could be scaffolded up for more advanced woodworkers if desired.

Just took my first class of many at ASFD and couldn’t be more ecstatic! Every instructor is essentially an established professional furniture maker, the experience and knowledge they bring is exceptional! I love the small intimate classes that allow you more one on one time with the instructors. If you’re looking to bring your knowledge of woodworking to the next level, visit ASFD!
