This gym is amazing!! kids classes are well taught with attention to detail and designed to build confidence. coaches are very diligent and patient. The adult classes are even better. Very good people and the vibe is great. coach velez is very professional but laid back!! awesome place definitely recommend to all skill levels!!

Javier Velez taught a seminar at my school and his instruction was absolutely amazing. Since then I’ve met a number of students and had many occasions to consult with him regarding business as we progressed through quarantine situation. And I can tell you this right now, you’ll never find an instructor that cares more deeply about his students and their success. Any facility run by this man and his staff will have students that become family. He puts his heart and soul and everything he teaches and it shows. I count myself blessed to know him and his students and look forward to exploring Jiu-jitsu further in their company.

As a first time martial art practitioner I came here to learn a new skill while staying physically active. I love it here. Clean place. No egos and varied skill sets ranging from black to completely fresh white belts. Instructors are extremely thorough when explaining and demonstrating techniques. They highlight the important details of each technique and encourage questions. The only regret I have is that I did not sign up sooner

Top quality gym. They keep the place safe and respectful. I’ve always enjoyed training here. I’m a female and 120 pounds and accidental injuries are always in the back of my mind. I always feel comfortable and the techniques are quality. Javier is welcoming and thorough in his instruction.On another note I am a competitor and have had really excellent exchanges with the students here. It’s a place where you can be a casual student or a serious competitor and still walk away satisfied.

This is my first year enrolling in BJJ classes. Everyone is extremely friendly and willing to help you if you are not grasping the material at first. I really enjoy learning about the techniques, meeting new people, and experiencing a full body work out. When I began attending the school I told the instructor Javier what my goals were and what I was looking to get out of taking classes. He has always been very professional, respectful, and helpful in all of our encounters. I like the relaxed atmosphere and that we are encouraged to learn at our own pace. I look forward to continuing my training here to grow as an athlete.

I can honestly say that he is one of the most giving and compassionate practitioners/instructors that you can find anywhere. Took a seminar with Professor Javier and to say I was amazed would be an understatement. His methodology and pedagogy is something to be rivaled. He has a wonderful way of explaining the process of the move and what the defenses and offenses you would have. He brought some of his members to the seminar and they were equally as humble and definitely shared their love for BJJ.If you have the chance, definitely check his gym out. Since I began training at the academy its been an enlightening experience. I was a complete novice to any form of martial arts and everyone has been very welcoming. This is the first BJJ gym I have ever trained at so I don’t have a big reference point. What I do have is testimonies with a lot of different gyms/clubs/personal trainers etc. I am very analytical and observant so I notice that the people at this gym genuinely care about you getting better at the sport. It’s a great feeling knowing you’re not being judged for not being good or consistent but on the contrary being encouraged, being encouraged by the people there. I first started off with a free trial and it made me want to go back the next day and the day after etc.... I highly recommend this gym to anyone that is looking for a great place to train and very knowledgeable people that are very patient to educate others! I can see myself here for a while without a doubt.

Great place to train. They focus on technique and timing over brute strength. The lessons learned here can be applied everywhere in life my only complaint is that I wish I had the time to train more. The staff is great and the students are cool. Ive been there since 2014 so long enough to see them all evolve as martial artists and instructors. I started out there mainly for the striking classes they used to have and it took me years to be comfortable with BJJ and now Im a proud white belt. God willing Ill be able to bring my kids to train there.

I have been a student of Professor Javier’s for a couple of years. Velez Jiu-jitsu is an amazing academy. You will not find a better, more capable instructor or teammates. Everyone there is committed to helping each other grow in a safe and nurturing environment.In response to the negative and unjust review left by the disgruntled “almost student” let me say this: sometimes a difficult decision has to be made for the benefit of the whole. As someone who operated a martial arts academy for nearly 20 years, I too have had to expel students who created a harmful and unsafe environment for others and themselves. And while it is true that we are learning a martial art, the fact remains that every individual at any given academy is there for their own, very personal reasons. Those reasons should always be respected! Should a student that is older, less aggressive, or less physically fit be any less deserving of training and instruction. Your failure to respect that, may be the reason you were advised to go elsewhere. Kudos to Professor Javier for making the tough call and excising a potential cancer before it metastasized.

6 years ago I came to US from Czech Republic. I didnt no anybody and I couldnt also speak, because my English was very poor. When my friend took me to Professor Javiers gym I started boxing and then Jiu Jitsu. He took me under his wings and basically teach me not just self-defense, but also, speak English and most importantly he taught me how to trust myself and being confident. Thank you!

I went to Velez Jiu Jitsu with my husband because he is friends with Javier. I was nervous to attend because I never visited another gym before. When I arrived my nerves subsided. Moved here from the west coast and new to the area, saw that there was a jiu jitsu place right next to where I lived, and eventually signed up after a few months. Wish I had joined sooner. I had taken classes elsewhere in the past before, but kept quitting due to the steep learning curve. I would feel lost and embarrassed during drills.When I joined here I noticed that the instructors here all care if you learn, and so do your teammates. In addition, there are fundamentals class suited for beginners every weekday evening as well, which is a great option for people just getting started. Cant recommend this place enough!
