I started taking hula classes from Lisa via Zoom, right after the pandemic began. Lisas kind heart brings quality content and real Hawaiian spirit in every class, which kept me feeling lifted throughout a very hard year. The classes are professional quality, and the vibe is super welcoming and non-judgmental. You really feel like part of a big family. I recommend this Hālau to anyone wanting to lift their spirits with a positive island vibe of kind people and the warmth of Hawaiian culture. πŸ’–πŸ€™

I received online Hawaiian dance lessons as a birthday gift in 2020 from Lisa and I am still taking classes. I am learning to dance Hula as well as language, vocabulary, music. Everyone is so kind, and helpful! I really enjoy taking these classes! Mahalo, Lisa!

Oregon Ballet Theatre Education and Community Engagement had the opportunity to partner with Hula Halau for PPS summer enrichment workshops. Ms. Lisa was fabulous! Her classes were engaging, developmentally appropriate, and full of Hawaiian culture. Students loved seeing Ms. Lisa all dressed in her Hawaiian costume. They loved to play her Hawaiian instruments, too. I hope to be able to partner with Hula Halau in the future!

I went here for 6 months. I did learn a lot while there. The students were a bit cliquey and I barely felt like I ever got to know anyone though I attended twice a week. More of an older generation. As a new student, they barely took the time to go over what they were already working on even if it was considered the right time for new students to join. You just had to wait until they finally started a new number before anyone would break it down again and if it was a number they were doing already you would have to pick it up, which is fine but they would never revisit doing it in then mirror so you would have to guess what the hands were or until someone finally corrected you weeks later. Excited for the possibility of performing I spent a good deal of money on costumes to perform in for a highlight yearly showcase. However one week before performances, I was finally told that I would have to cover any visible tattoos (for me this is 1/4 of each arm) as well as change any unnatural hair color. Mine is a rose color. I found this extremely unprofessional, as these expectations were not set forth in the rules they give you upon entry and was told to me only a week before performing. Had I had this info prior, I could have decided if this was the right studio fit for me, but instead it main me feel judged for my skin and unwelcome. They also have a rental policy in which you rent a skirt for 3 or 4 months which is a dingy group of random skirts left behind and then it is paid for and you get to have your own to keep. Even after being there for 6 months and asking multiple times for my skirt, they never gave me mine. This was my experience going here.

After watching their big show in February and being in total awe of what I saw, I reached out to the owner as a local piano studio teacher/owner who had a big Hawaiian themed program planned. They graciously sent two beautiful dancers who gave my program the authentic Hawaiian touch I was looking for. The audience absolutely loved them. If you are interested in Hula for any age this is the place to go.Thanks again,Cathy PoussonCreative Keys Piano Studio

Im delighted to be learning HULA. We lived in Hawaii for two years while my husband worked for the University of Hawaii. There I loved the music and the dance of Hula, but never thought of learning how to dance. That was 52 years ago. When I saw Hula Halau Ohana Holookoa perform last year I knew I wanted to learn. I saw it as a great way to exercise without being too fast or hard on my aging body. Ive learned now that Hula is much more than exercising in a graceful beautiful way. It is also great mind work, spiritual and fun. Hula is precise in its movements of feet, arms, hands and hips. And the big bonus is I now have many new friends.

Lisa,Thank you so much for coming and working with our kids! The children loved making music and learning about all the instruments you brought--what a great cultural lesson to add to learning hula movement. You did a great job engaging the kids (two age groups, 0-5 and 6-11) and being flexible with our set-up.I appreciated your cheerful, friendly attitude in interacting with me and others, and think you offer a great program!- Deanne
